Pastor Appointed The Church of God regional Bishop recently appointed Mrs. Lynnette Morris the permanent Pastor of the Chokoloskee Church of God. Born in Naples, Lynnette lived in Jerome until her teenage years when she moved to Everglades City. She met her husband Caleb in high school and they married right after graduation, now celebrating 17 years! After receiving her nursing certificate, Lynnette raised her two sons Caleb Jr (16) and Scout (14). She was called into the ministry while attending Chokoloskee Church of God, received her Exhorters license in 2012 from the “Church of God School of Ministry” and was ordained in 2013. Lynnette has served as Pastor Dantin's associate Pastor the past two years. She says “Chokoloskee has lost one of its finest with the passing of Pastor Morris Dantin; but as time moves on, the memory of Pastor Dantin will also live on!”

TAYLOR’S CORNER Our class went to visit the new aqua culture lab last week and it was amazing! They were raising tilapia and cichlids. Dalton Patt showed us around and fed the fish. When he fed the tilapia it was a feeding frenzy and the fish went bonkers. The aquaculture lab was created so the students can learn about

farming and raising fish. They are also learning about the economics of farming fish. They are even withdrawing water from the tank into buckets and testing it on the garden to see how the plants will react to the water from the tank. The last day of school is June 4th and it is just around the corner. Everybody in my class is freaking out. I’m so excited for the summer break because than I will be an official fifth grader and my brother will be a seventh grader!!!!! The little bits competition was on Saturday May 10th at Edison State College. The theme was to build something that you would see at the county fair. Our team made the longest snake in the world the freak show and the ping pong ball toss. The room that we were building our projects in was filled with little bits buzzing and lighting up and spinning around, it was amazing and fun too. Our team didn’t win but we did have fun doing it and the judges said it was close.

The Wild Everglades: Florida manatee by Claybrook Story

The Florida manatee (T. m. latirostris) or “sea cow” is one of two sub species of the West Indian manatee. Manatees have a weight of 880 to 1,210 lb., and mean length of 9.2 to 9.8 ft., with maxima of 12 ft. and 3,913 lb. seen (the females tend to be larger and heavier). When born, baby manatees have an average mass of 66 lb. Apart from mothers with their young, or males following a receptive female, manatees are generally solitary creatures. Manatees spend about 50% of the day sleeping submerged, surfacing for air regularly at intervals of less than 20 minutes. The Florida subspecies (T. m. latirostris) has been known to live up to 60 years. Manatees typically breed once every two years; generally only a single calf is born. Gestation lasts about 12 months and a further 12 to 18 months to wean the calf. Manatees are herbivores and eat over 60 different freshwater and saltwater plants.

My Little Slice of Paradise by Kathy Brock

“Natural Mosquito Control, Is there Such a Thing?” Mosquito season is cranking up and most of us would probably buy stock in any company that could crack the mosquito code and give us a safe and really effective natural control product. Well unfortunately, this article is not going to tell you about a new revolutionary product to invest in...instead, l look to living nature to help us with mosquito control (for the most part). You may have heard about the crazy people with the Bat House in their yard in Everglades City. That would be me/us. Our bat-condo is fully occupied with about 600 of the mosquito loving little guys & gals. Depending on what forum you read, the

average bat will consume between 600 and 3000 mosquitoes a night. I tend to think 600 per night sounds more reasonable. So let's do the math: 600 bats x 600 each, that's 360,000 per night - I'm in! Bats are nocturnal so you will rarely see

one during the day. You can hear them once you learn their "chirp" that I describe as a squeak that needs oiling. Our bats are in the Myotis family of bats. They are small with wooly brown fur on their backs. Contrary to what we once were led to believe, bats do not target our hair, nor do they carry rabies at a higher rate than any other mammal. In fact, my research revealed that bats are not any more prone to rabies than most other mammals, including dogs. Bats are not rodents, therefore they are not related to rats and mice. It is true that you do not want bats to live in your attic or home. For one, the noise alone would drive you out. They get very noisy at certain times of the day, especially when the sun is setting. They also leave droppings or "guano" behind which is a fancy term for bat poo. It is fantastic fertilizer but I would not want it piling up in my attic for sure! It is smelly and a health hazard (as you would expect from any animal excrement) but my herb garden is thriving from it. There are several colonies of bats in EC. The church across from the school has them roosting in the royal palm seeds (a favorite, natural location for them), and a house on Allen Avenue had some in their palms as well. Colonies will move so they may leave an area for a period of time, then come back. This happened with our colony, they were gone for about 2 weeks, then came back and haven't left since. The bats alone are not going to knock out the mosquito population, but they can at least put a dent in it. The purple martins and other swallows in town eat the bugs by day, the bats take over at night...then there is that really big "animal" that rides around the streets at about 5:30 a.m. I heard that really wipes them out too. I like to do as much as possible naturally, and also wear long sleeves and pants at night. Every now and then I break out the Eau de Deet, but that is a rarity. I am hoping as my bat population grows (and it is), my mosquito population will decrease (honestly, not convinced...yet). One thing I am sure of, it's really cool to watch them flying out of their house from the porch -we refer to it as "the drop," and then fly into the night.

Saltmarsh Mosquito (Aedes taeniorhynchus) Other names: skeeter, Jersey birds / Status:

FL=all too stable and thriving / Life span: to 2 months / Length: 0.15 in. (4 mm) / Reproduces in the tidal flats of Ding Darling Wildlife Preserve as well as the bay side of Captiva / Found: Throughout all of Southwest Florida. The saltmarsh mosquito is not a major vector in the transmission of diseases. Although capable of transmitting St. Louis encephalitis and EEE (eastern equine encephalitis) in the laboratory, in the wild it does not fare as well with these two diseases. It is a known vector for dog heartworm and Venezuelan equine encephalitis. This isn’t the case for some of the other species that inhabit most of Southwest Florida. In fact, of all the creatures described in this book, from bull sharks to four-hundred pound alligators, the single most deadly is the mosquito. No other creature has caused so much suffering as the tiny, ubiquitous mosquito. The most deadly of all the species on the islands is Aedes aegypti. An invasive species that originated in Africa, this mosquito has now spread via the various industries of Homo sapiens to every tropical and sub-tropical region in the world. This is the insect responsible for the spread of yellow fever, dengue fever, Chikungunya and other diseases. Although it is present in fair numbers on the island, we are all blessed in that there is no yellow or dengue fever present in the human population to serve as a reservoir for the disease. Another equally dangerous species is Anopheles quadrimaculatus. This species is a well-known vector for malaria but once again, lacking a host with a case of active malaria to transmit, this tiny mosquito is no more deadly than its bite. The other two species of concern are Culex nigripalpus, which carries West Nile virus and Saint Louis encephalitis and the Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) which also vectors dengue fever. The other species found in southwest Florida are not known to carry any human diseases but all of them are capable of transmitting dog heartworm. If the thought of having all of these potentially dangerous mosquitoes in your back yard might be worrisome to you I can only say that you have every right to be worried. The pain and suffering brought about by these insects is unimaginable. This year alone, more than one million people will die from malaria. When we add deaths from dengue fever, yellow fever and a wide array of various equine and other forms of encephalitis the number exceeds two million, with hundreds of thousands of cases in the third world going unreported. Although mosquitoes are eaten by small birds, bats and their larvae is taken by mosquito fish, frogs and turtles, these natural controls cannot rival their amazing ability to reproduce. Although they are unwitting hosts of the diseases they can carry, mosquitoes are the most frightening creatures in LIVING SANIBEL. “Rattlesnake Salesman”

Continued from the April 25 issue of The Mullet Rapper. George End saw that he could make a profit by selling off a product that was in abundance, some just for the collection of the snakes. He made key chains, hat bands, wallets and lady purses to sell in his business. He also opened a reptile show in a place they later called Rattlesnake, Florida. It was located on the south side of Tampa Bay. The business attracted large crowds and some people settled there. It was later given a Post Office where you could mail post cards stamped with the name on it.

It was there that she met Sally Rand the Bubble Dancer and she was later invited to the opening ceremonies at Carlstrom Field, FL, where cadets from Britain and the United States were trained to be fighter pilots for World War II outside of Arcadia. MUSEUM of the Everglades Pauline Reeves Gallery

Muffy Clark Gill’s exhibit "The 20th Century Seminole Experience: Paintings from the Florida Indian Tribes Series" continues through the end of May. If you haven’t yet been by the Museum, you don’t want to miss the last week of this fascinating exhibit; truly unique! The Museum of the Everglades is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. On Tuesday, June 3, from 5 to 7 p.m. the Friends of the Museum will host an opening reception for the Summer Art Exhibit featuring the students of Everglades City School. Every year we are amazed at the diversity and creativity of our art students under the direction of Paul “Trib” Tribble. Please come and meet with the students on June 3. From Savannah’s Eyes I can't believe it's almost the end of the school year! It has flown by so quickly and I'm in shock that I'm gonna be a senior this coming fall. I think the thing I'm going to miss most is the senior class. I've been with most of them since Pre-K and they're like my brothers and sisters; it's gonna be tough to see them go and not be in my classes or in the hallways. I will always remember the good times we've shared

together, the laughter, the crying, and the jokes; you all have amazing personalities that cannot be replaced by anyone or anything. Now, don't get me wrong, I love my class just as much but this year I've spent more time with the seniors because we've had dual enrollment together and I've been to all their meetings and field trips. It actually feels like I'm one of them. Graduation is May 30 but my time hasn't come yet, and I'm glad I get to spend one more year in high school. Sometimes, though, I wish I was graduating this year just to be with my friends so I've dedicated this article to my friends of the Senior Class 2014. Kristin, you've stuck with me through thick and thin, no matter what. And I'm going to miss all of our laughs in Chappell's science class and dressing alike so we can be twins. I can't wait to go to Edison State with you next year! Trevor, you've been with me since middle school and I don't think I've ever gotten closer to anyone that quick before. You've made my high school years so much fun and you're so unpredictable! You have the best advice and you're very wise for your age. We've had so many fun and irreplaceable adventures in the times we've been together and I can't wait to roommate with you in college! You go girl you've made it! Wayde, you're my best friend! And I hope that you find all that you want through life. And always make the right choices and follow your heart. Herbie, you've just came to the school this year but you've became my "big brother" and took me under your wing. I'm glad to have an amazing friend like you and I hope you go far in life. Henry, you're definitely a crazy one! I don't think I've ever met anyone like you at all in my life. I hope you find a great job so you can buy a good car so that you might think about not wrecking it or tearing it apart like your other 14 vehicles. Tyler, you're such a funny person I think every time I talk to you I end up laughing somehow. I hope that you go far in life and achieve all that you want to. Colman, you're such an intelligent student and I hope you go to college to become something amazing and show everyone that you can do anything if you set your mind to do it. Jacob, oh goodness you're something else! I'm really gonna miss you in school; your personality and jokes are unlike any other. I'm gonna miss our airplane and paper ball fights in 6th period. Dairiean, you have such determination and I know you'll do great things when you go to Full Sail University. I hope in a few years I'll be playing a game or watching something on TV that you've created. Kendell, your laugh is like a chain reaction, and it's one of a kind. When I hear you laugh it always makes me laugh, and I actually wish that I did have your laugh it's so cute! I'm so happy that you got a full ride scholarship to Lorenzo Walker, you're gonna do big things! Chris, you're such an amazing person and I'm definitely going to miss your random talks about kiteboarding all the time. I wish you would still be down here with us after you graduate, but I know the Coastguard is going to love having you -- just know you will be missed. These are the amazing students of Everglades City School and we hope you will join us to watch them graduate on May 30 at 7:00 p.m. Come celebrate another class leaving us and becoming remarkable people in this world. Early on May 13 a tractor trailer made a sharp right hand turn from Gardenia onto Buckner Ave. No one was injured and soon a tow truck arrived. The week before another semi-tractor trailer jack-knifed on CR29.

TRIBUTE TO JÜRG FURRER

Jürg Furrer was a friend to many and it was with great sadness that we learned of his passing on May 18. For over 20 years, he

was coming to Everglades City with his friends from Switzerland playing their jazz band music, bird-watching and hiking through the Fakahatchee. Most people remember him for his fanciful sketches of the historic buildings, restaurants and homes. He loved the history of this area and he designed the Friends of the River of Grass Greenway (FROGG) logo with the frog waving from his bicycle. He was a very dear friend to many locals, including Jim Webb who traveled to Switzerland to see him when he was hospitalized. The last time Jürg came to visit was in April. He will be missed!

SHERIFF’S REPORT

On 05/04/14 deputies were dispatched to the 63 mm rest area of I-75 for a suspicious male. Upon arrival the suspect fled the area but after an extensive search he was located as well as a stolen vehicle. Arrested was a 23- yr-old male from Fort Myers who was charged with Grand Theft Auto. Other arrests: A 35-yr-old male, formally from Chokoloskee, was arrested and charged on May 2 by Naples Police Dept. in Naples with the following charges: possession of a controlled substance, possession of cocaine and narcotics equipment paraphernalia. *Please remember to report any suspicious activity immediately to the Collier County Sheriff’s Office at 252-9300 or in an emergency by dialing 911.
