Jayasiri, who replaced Tan Sri Dr. Rebecca Fatimah Sta Maria who has retired in early July 2016. The visit was held on 5 September 2016 at Menara MITI (Level 28) In Kuala Lumpur. Mr. Jarrod Lim (MSI CEO) was also in attendance. Several subject-matters, including those relating to the issuance of new manufacturing licence, the on-going efforts by ASEAN and the ASEAN Iron and Steel Council (AISC) in addressing the influx of unfair cheap imports of steel products from China, “Buy Malaysian Products First” policy and the promotion of the Industrialised Building System (IBS), were broached during the meeting. Prior to the courtesy call on Datuk J. Jayasiri, the MISIF Delegation visited Mr. Jarrod Lim (MSI CEO) in his office located at Menara MITI (Level 26). Views were exchanged on policy matters relating to the issuance of new manufacturing licence and the “Buy Malaysian Products First”. Statistical matters were also discussed. 12th Conference on Status & Outlook of the Malaysian Iron & Steel Industry To update the business community on developments and trends of the Malaysian iron and steel industry, MISIF is organizing the 12th Conference on Status and Outlook of the Malaysian Iron and Steel Industry on 13 October 2016 at the Hilton Petaling Jaya, Petaling Jaya, Selangor. Similar to the past conferences, MISIF will launch the 2016 edition of the 12th Report on Status and Outlook of the Malaysian Iron and Steel Industry and each participant will get a complimentary copy of the report. MISIF is targeting to obtain 180 participants for the conference. YB Dato’ Seri Ong Ka Chuan, Minister of International Trade and Industry II, will be gracing the dinner event as guest-of-honour. The dinner event will be held in conjunction with the 12th Conference on Status and Outlook of the Malaysian Iron and Steel Industry on 13 October 2016 at the Hilton Petaling Jaya, Petaling Jaya, Selangor. MISIF Meets TSIIA MISIF CRC Group and Steel Sheet Coaters Group met with Taiwan Steel and Iron Industries Association (TSIIA) in Kaoshiung, Taiwan on 22 July 2016. Both organizations exchanged information on the global situation of the iron and steel industry, the cold rolled/coated products’ market, and the challenges faced by the industry in both countries. At the end of the discussion, it was hoped that the joint dialogue session would continue to be held on a cordial basis for the mutual benefit of the steel industries in Malaysia and Taiwan.

Bahru Signs MoU with Segi University MISIF witnessed the signing ceremony of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) between MISIF member, Bahru Stainless Sdn Bhd and Segi University held on 28 July 2016. MISIF CEO, Mr. Frankie Wee, represented the Federation at the ceremony which was held at Segi University, Kota Damansara, Selangor.

The signing parties sought to explore opportunities for cooperation and collaboration in industrial internship

training and employability,

collaboration on integrated design projects, collaboration on research projects related to engineering development; and industrial attachments for Segi University lecturers. MGBC Visit to MISIF Mr. Sim Chee Liang (Vice President) and Mr. Bikash Kumar Sinha (CEO) of Malaysia Green Building Confederation (MGBC) made a courtesy call on MISIF CEO, Mr. Frankie Wee, on 29 August 2016. Mr. Sim is also the Chairman of MGBC’s Liaison & Outreach

Committee. Programmes of mutual interest were explored during the visit. MISIF is an Institutional Partner (Member) of MGBC.

MSI CEO Visit to MISIF Mr Jarrod Lim, the newly-appointed CEO of Malaysia Steel Institute (MSI) made a courtesy visit to the MISIF Secretariat on 4 August 2016. On hand to welcome Mr. Lim was Mr. Frankie Wee (CEO), Ms. Ng Mor Kiang (Industry Manager) and Cik Rahana Mustaffar (Senior Executive). Mr. Wee also welcomed Prof. Dr. Wang Chan Chin from the Faculty Of Engineering and Built Environment, Segi University (Mechanical Engineering), whose visit was pre-arranged to coincide with the MSI CEO visit to MISIF.

MISIF Committees The MISIF Council at its meeting on 17 August 2016 decided to reorganize the Energy and Green technology Committee into two committees namely, Energy & Utilities Committee (Chairman: Mr. Cheng Lai Seng) and Green Technology, Safety, Health and Environment Committee (Chairman: Ir. A K Woo). Members are encouraged to volunteer and participate in these two committees as well as in the other MISIF Committees. Kindly contact the MISIF Secretariat for details.

MISIF Collaborates with Bahru on Stainless Steel Workshop MISIF, in cooperation with Bahru Stainless Sdn Bhd, organized a workshop on “Working with Stainless Steel” on 26 - 27 September 2016 in Tanjong Puteri Resort, Pasir Gudang, Johor. The workshop was intended to promote the wider applications of stainless steel as a material and to increase the consumption of stainless steel products in the region. The workshop was conducted by Mr. Angel Javier Mielgo Benavides, Mr. Yoshikazu Tsukuda and Mr. Teoh Swin Le from Bahru Stainless Sdn Bhd. A total of 36 participants attended the workshop which covered the following subject areas: • Introduction to stainless steel; • Mechanical & chemical properties of

stainless steel; • International standards (ASTM,

ASME, EN, JIS) for stainless steel; • Stainless steel making; • Forming potential in stainless steel; • Welding in stainless steel; • Corrosion mechanisms in stainless

steel; • Mechanical and metallographic lab

testing. The workshop concluded with a field visit to Bahru Stainless Sdn Bhd to enable the participants to know more of annealing and pickling, cold rolling, slitting and shearing process in a stainless steel plant.

Pre-Determination of Safeguard Investigation On 27 May 2016, the Government of Malaysia initiated two safeguard investigations based on two petitions filed by Malaysia Steel Association on behalf of the domestic industry producing: • Steel Wire Rods and Deformed Bar in

Coils; • Steel Concrete Reinforcing Bar. The Government of Malaysia had made an affirmative preliminary determination in relation to the investigation with regard to the steel wire rods and deformed bar in coils and steel concrete reinforcing bar products imported into Malaysia.

The provisional safeguard measures applicable shall take the form of provisional safeguard duties in the amount as follows and shall be imposed on the countries specified in the Schedule: • 13.90% for steel wire rods and

deformed bar in coils and; • 13.42 % for steel concrete reinforcing

bar products.

A final determination in relation to the investigation shall be made within the period of 200 days from 26 September 2016 for steel concrete reinforcing bar products and 27 September 2016 for steel wire rods and deformed bar in coils.
