ATAR than a big one, it was still aremarkable achievement bytalented and motivated students.

Though Carmel was a Jewishschool it also had an openenrolment policy and took a fewnon-Jewish students.

Mr Taylor said it had been anadvantage for the students to be insuch a small year group which wasabout half the size of a normal Year12 cohort.

“Each of the courses had verysmall class sizes and the teacherswere able to give them intimate andpersonal support,” he said.

“But they were also a verymotivated group of kids that werekeen to do well.”

He said the school tended toachieve good results becauseJewish people had a strongtradition of valuing learning.

Perth’s only Jewish schoolhas achieved the highestmedian tertiary entranceranking in the State.

Though Carmel School does notappear on the official table releasedby the School Curriculum andStandards Authority because it hadfewer than 20 students last year, itachieved a stellar medianAustralian Tertiary AdmissionRank of 96.65.

This means that half the school’s17 university-bound studentsachieved an ATAR above that.

The next highest median ATARof 93.6 was achieved by PerthModern School, where all studentsare selected for their academicability.

Principal David Taylor said eventhough it was easier for a smallschool to achieve a higher median

“That dates back 5000 years,” hesaid.

“That whole culture of valuinglearning is inculcated in thefamilies and the schools.”

Mr Taylor said Carmel had theopposite problem from manyschools because it had todiscourage some students fromdoing too much homework.

Noa Levin, 17, who was head girllast year and scored an ATAR of98.4, said the Year 12s were aclose-knit group who had sharedthe same classes for most of theirlives.

“We had quite a bright bunch ofpeople and everyone pushed eachother to do the best that we coulddo,” she said.

“Some classes had only twostudents. It was really good havingthat one on one with the teachers.”

League Tables are incompleteAcademic results of IB students are not included

A number of schools in Western Australia now offer

students a choice between the global International

Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) or the

Western Australian Courses of Study (WACE) as

a way to secure a University placement.

The schools listed below support the AHISA statement that league

tables do not represent the worth of an education at any given

school. The validity of these tables is further compromised by the

fact that IB Diploma student results are not included in the league

calculations.

If ‘school rankings’ are important to you in selecting the right school

for your child’s education, make sure you have the full picture.

Presbyterian Ladies’ College, Peppermint Grove

Scotch College, Swanbourne

The Association of Heads of Independent School of

Australia (AHISA) WA and the Catholic Secondary

Principals’ Association (CSPA) do not support the

publication of league tables as they unfairly compare

schools and students using a narrow and simplistic

measure. League tables ignore the relative advantages

and disadvantages inherent in society.

The tables fail to recognise student achievement and engagement in

other diverse programmes and domains. Nor do they recognise integrity

of character. League tables also underestimate the important partnerships

schools develop to support young people moving into the next phase of

their lives.

We congratulate all Year 12 students who have achieved their personal

best in the WACE and applaud the commitment, professionalism and

dedication of all teachers and ancillary staff in supporting the achievements

of Western Australian students.

Forming an opinion ofschool quality based on theacademic achievements ofone group of Year 12s in

one year is a bit like scoring arestaurant based only on its dessertmenu.

Anyone judging a restaurantwould also take into account thequality of its other courses, aswell as customer service andambience.

In the same way, anyonecomparing schools would also lookat what sports they offered, thestandard of teaching and how closethey are to their home — not just athow well their Year 12s fareacademically.

And when it comes to rankingschools, there is no one measurethat can capture adequately thedifferences between schools, whichis why the School Curriculum andStandards Authority warns readersto look at a range of differenttables, instead of drawingconclusions from just one.

That is also the reason TheWeekend West has this year chosento produce a separate top 50 listbased on the median AustralianTertiary Admission Rank achievedby students in each school.

That data comes from a differentsource and is obtained underfreedom of information laws, soreaders will not find the full listanywhere else.

The median ATAR is simply themiddle ATAR score achieved bythat school, which means half the

students performed above andbelow that mark. Some critics havealso argued that using ATARs is afairer measure because it is basedon scaled exam and school marksthat have undergone a statisticalmoderation process.

They say WACE course scores —on which the WACE top 50 list isbased — are less reliable becausethey have not been subjected to anyscaling to take into account thedifficulty of the courses thatstudents have studied.

SCSA board chairman PatrickGarnett acknowledges that rankingschools based on their medianATAR is another valid measure ofachievement.

“But, like all of these indicators,

it’s capable of being distorted bythings like how many kids getencouraged to do the ATAR coursesversus how many get encouragedout of it,” he said.

“If you had a median ATAR of 65and 95 per cent of your kids weredoing it, I think that’s better thanhaving a median ATAR of 70 and 30per cent of your kids doing it.”

Many of the same schools appearon both lists in slightly differentorder.

All Saints’ College, which rankedtop of the WACE list, is third on theATAR list.

Top-ranking public school, PerthModern, which is the only WAschool with an entry exam, camesecond on both lists.

All Saints’ College topped the WACE tables for 2014.

• These tables combine information provided by the SchoolCurriculum and Standards Authority and by the TertiaryInstitutions Service Centre. Different criteria are applied by thetwo bodies when compiling these lists.• Information on achievement in WA Certificate of Education(WACE) and vocational education and training (VET) courses isreleased annually by SCSA.• Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) statistics wereobtained by The Weekend West from TISC under freedom ofinformation laws.• The first three columns of the table on pages 4 and 5 show thenumber of eligible Year 12s at each school, the percentage ofstage 3 enrolments and the proportion in which students scored75 or higher. The last three columns show how many studentsachieved an ATAR by sitting at least four exams, each school’smedian ATAR and the percentage of Year 12s who graduated.• Schools with fewer than 20 eligible Year 12 students are notlisted, nor are those with mature-age and international students. The median ATAR is not given if there are fewer than fivestudents with an ATAR.• The table on page 6 shows the number of Year 12s at eachschool who did VET courses and the percentage who completeda certificate II or higher. Schools with fewer than 20 eligiblestudents or with fewer than 10 students enrolled in at least oneVET unit of competency are omitted.• Page 8 lists alphabetically the schools with thehighest-performing students in stage 3 WACE courses, based onthe percentage who achieved a course score of 75 or higher. Thelist does not include schools with fewer than 10 students in thatcourse. Up to 15 schools with the highest percentage are listed.

Country schools put on agood showing, with eightmaking it into the top 50WACE table for academic

achievement.School Curriculum and

Standards Authority chiefexecutive Allan Blagaich said itwas encouraging to see so manyregional schools on the list.

“There are some schools thathave not in the past appeared thatare pleasing to see,” he said.

Education Departmentdirector-general Sharyn O’Neillsaid she was delighted to note thatfive regional public schools hadmade it into the top 50 table.

“It is a tremendous credit to allstudents and staff and shows wehave strong schools in countryWA,” she said.

The top-ranked public countryschool was Albany Senior HighSchool, which placed 27th on thetable based on the percentage ofunits in which students achievedcourse scores of 75 or above.

The other public schoolsincluded Australind (32), MargaretRiver (33) and Manjimup SeniorHigh School (42) and ManeaCollege (45).

Private schools BunburyCathedral Grammar School (41),Georgiana Molloy Anglican School(44) and Bunbury Catholic College(49) also featured.

Though it did not appear on anyof the tables because it had so fewstudents, St Mary’s College in

Broome also had a stellar year, with several pupils achievingresults in the top 10 per cent of theState.

Albany SHS deputy principalGraeme Bell attributed his school’sperformance to its committed, experienced teachers whocounselled students to enrol incourses that suited them.

“We’re fortunate we’ve got somevery good feeder schools,” he said.

“And we’ve got good counsellingprocesses where we work with the

students to get them in a courseappropriate to their aspirationsand abilities. If you get the kidsinto the right courses they’remotivated and they do well.”

Mr Bell said country studentstended to be independent learnerswho had many outside interests.

“It’s not all academic rigour —it’s about the sporting and thecultural also,” he said.

About 40 per cent of the studentsat Albany took ATAR courses thatput them on a path towards direct

university entry, though many tooka gap year before moving awayfrom Albany to start tertiarystudies.

Mr Bell said most of the highachievers who put their schooluniforms on for one last time to bephotographed were also planningto go to university.

The school’s head boy, ReyneHordacre, who spoke at the funerallast week of fellow Year 12 studentJay Muscat who was killed by ashark, hopes to study medicine.

The number of schools vyingfor top of the table forvocational education andtraining achievement is

growing each year as high schoolsincrease their focus on VET courses.Nineteen schools tied for firstposition on the rankings based onthe proportion of studentsachieving a VET certificate II orhigher, up from 14 the previous year.Thornlie Senior High School had themost students, with 87.Principal Paul Billing attributed theschool’s performance to teachers’diligence in monitoring students’progress through their courses tomake sure they met all theirdeadlines. The school had alsoincreased the number of courses itoffered to appeal to students’interests in areas such as media, music, dance and visual arts.“Given that about 70 per cent of ourstudents are vocationally bound, wethought we really needed to look atbroadening the range,” he said. “So we’ve gone from about fourmainstream courses about threeyears ago and we’re offering abouta dozen now.“We’ve built pathways ofcomplementary courses around

each of those and we counsel ourstudents very strongly to make surethey get the pathway that’s going tosatisfy their needs and theirinterests, so we don’t have themfalling by the wayside halfwaythrough the course.”Thornlie VET co-ordinator andregistered training organisationmanager Linley Stewart saideverything students did in theclassroom was linked to whathappened in real workplaces. She said students could choosebetween courses as diverse asinformation technology, hospitality, child care and sport.Thornlie SHS dux of vocationalstudies Danii Rock said she likedhaving the flexibility to do coursesthat she enjoyed without thepressure of having to sit exams. She did courses in visual arts, outdoor education, mediaproduction, careers and enterprise, maths and English. “They give youheaps of options,” she said.Danii plans to study eventsmanagement at TAFE this year.Last year more than 41 per cent ofall Year 12 students took part in aVET program, with 7000 studentsachieving at least one qualification.
