UNFOLD was designed as a mixed-use building for the creative spirit. The program combines a Taichi martial arts studio, a bakery, an art gallery, and a private residence. It is a place where all different art forms come together, providing a space where the artist is able to let his creativity unfold. The Chinese art of origami was studied during the conceptual design phase and was used in the development of the building facade.

OBJECTIVES
BLOOM was designed in recognition of the Parade of Roses in Pasadena, California. It is a place where residents can create a monument to the city through the living facades and the community gardens that are decorated with roses. The growth pattern of a rose was the concept behind major design elements, such as the operable shading devices. A rose begins as a closed bud and blooms JOUPBOEPQFOnPXFS KVTUBTUIFCVJMEJOHemerges from a closed state to an open state as the conditions of the environment change.

Casa del Roble, or “House of the Oaks,” was designed for a married couple looking to reside in the hills of Paso Robles, California. The Coast Live Oak tree, which is native to the site, was the source of inspiration for the design. The branching QBUUFSOXBTBOBMZ[FEUPmOEHFPNFUSJFT patterns, and proportions of the growth process. A major focus of the design was developing a screen system that provides shading, ventilation, and daylighting dueto the drastic climate of the site. The patterning of the screen system was derived by overlaying images of a Coast Live Oak silhouette, in effort to mimic the way light is transmitted through the branches of a tree into the building design, creating a dynamic relationship between light and shadow.
