Why Do Companies Use application Forms?

Guidelines for Application FormsAsk for two copies of the application form so you can redo it if necessary. A neatly completed form creates a good impression; a messy one does not.Bring your resum when you have to fill out an application You will use it to complete the application, and to make sure everything matchesbe sure to attach a copy of your resum to the application ( if allowed)

Take as much time as you need to fill out the form completely and accurately.

Never answer questions by referring the reader to your resum.

If possible, take the application home with you and submit it another day.Applications..Follow the instructions on the form carefullyIf questions do not apply to you, write "not applicable" or "N/A."Answer truthfullyIt is almost impossible to repair the damage if you are caught in a lie

Be specific about the type of work you are applying for.

"Anything" does not let the employer know what you can do or the type of work you should be considered for.Application Forms ..List your most recent work experience first, then the work you did before that, and so onList your education and training. Include the dates you attended education programs, names of the schools, and the certificates or diplomas you earned. Don't forget to note short training courses, special awards etc, especially if they relate to the type of work you are applying for.

Applications .Do not attach copies of: your marks, performance appraisals letters of recommendation unless you are asked to do so

But do attach a resum if allowedApplications .Double-check the form before you submit it.

Make sure your spelling is correct and your responses are neat and complete.

The overall appearance of the form should make the best possible impression of you as a job applicant.

The interview!

The 4 P's of a Successful Interview

PreparePracticeParticipateBe positivePrepare

Research the company / organization and the jobStudy the organizations website. You'll get a feeling for how it operates and how it views its employeesWebsite for St. Joes Villa

Practice! The interviewer wants to know how your skills, knowledge and experience match the needs of the positionand also how well you communicate.

Practicing what you're going to say and how youre going to say it will help you communicate clearly and confidently.

Practice ..It's also important for you to be prepared to ask questions during the interview. Make a list of things you want to know about the position or the organization and practice asking questions about them. Make sure you couldn't be expected to know the answers to these questions from your research. Its a good idea not to ask questions about salary, vacation or other benefits until after you receive a job offer.

Participate!

How you present yourself in the interviewyour appearance, your attitude, your body languageis vitally important.

You dont get a second chance to create a first impression!

Start the Interview Properly

These suggestions will help you show your enthusiasm and motivation in the interview:Smile and extend your hand to shake hands with the interviewer when you meet.Sit straight with your feet flat on the floor, leaning slightly forward to show interest.

Make eye contactinterviewers will expect you to look them in the eye with confidence.Watch the interviewer's body language and expressions for feedback on how you're doing.

Participate .Listen closely to the questions so you can answer them accurately.Be direct. Don't ramble or go off topic.Take time to think before you respond.Give all your attention to the interview and the interviewerthis tells the employer you are focused on your commitmentsBe positive !

Be positive. Most people feel anxious about a job interview. You can choose to be positive and confident, even if youre nervous.

Be Positive ..Remember, in any job interview:The employer wants to find out if you can do the job and if you will fit into the organization.

You want to find out if you should work for this organization, if you can learn and grow in this position, and if you will be respected and compensated properly for your work.

After the interview ..Be sure to follow-up with a thank you note or call that emphasizes two or three reasons why youre the ideal candidate for the position.

Next session..Social media tools for job SearchManaging Your Online ReputationKnow whats being said about you online ......before you go to the interview! When you made your latest status update on FaceBook I doubt if you were thinking, I wonder if this will help get me a job?. But this is exactly what you should be thinkingwhat if my next Job Interviewer asks me about what I'm posting on FaceBook? Is your profile locked down so only your friends can see it or is it open to the world? What about comments you make on other peoples sites, pictures and videos you post? This workshop will help you understand what employers are looking at online and how you can be PREPARED!75Think of All the Sites You Go to Online

How many of you go to sites like:GoogleFaceBookYoutubeTwitter

These site track what you are doing, saying, posting and if your privacy settings are NOT totally locked down, these sites make your activities VISIBLE to anyone whos looking for you76Lets start with how your Online Identityis created :Your online identity is created by not only by what you post, but also by what others post about you

Everything you say and do online works to create a collection of details that form a profile of who you are.But your online profile gets bigger every time someone else decides to post or tag or comment about you too!

77Your profile increases when you: get mentioned in a blog post tagged in a photo update your status on FaceBook are mentioned in newspaper storycomment on a YOUTUBE video write a review of a book or music or movieSome of these things you can control because you are the one writing the entryOther postings and tags are out of your control if someone else is doing them78This image was tagged by a friend as a joke

But they forgot to take it down before the employer saw it and decided to pass on hiring the applicant!79Your Online Profile. The Internet makes it easy for anyone to express an opinion and even easier to spread a rumour or create false storiesIts almost impossible to reverse the damage of a false rumour once it gets online

Once its out there, its out there

This is why it is SO important to know whats out there! What will someone find if they Google you?80How do you find what employers will find about you?Always start with Google

The fastest way to get started is to use the most common tool out there ..Google!82

Put your name in quotation marks = mary jane matthews to focus the search resultsNotice that FaceBook is Number #1 result! You can also search just for images of the person you want to find ( to see what they look like before you decide to interview them!)If you are in a computer lab, have the group google themselves to see whats out there already 83Other Search ToolsEmployers start with Google but if they are serious about hiring you they might also put your name in other search engines to see what shows up: yahoo.cawink.comdogpile.com123people.comThere are dozens of FREE search toolsTry your name in some of these and compare the resultsREMEMBER: EMPLOYERS CAN ALSO BUY SOPHISTICATED SEARCH TOOLS FROM RESEARCH COMPANIES TOO!84

Lets look at ways to monitor and control what the internet says about us!85Lets Start by Creating a Google Accounthttps://accounts.google.com

Your Google Account is more than just Search.

Talk, chat, share, schedule, store, organize, collaborate, discover, and create.

Use Google products from Gmail to Google+ to YouTube, view your search history, all with one username and password, all backed up all the time and easy to find at (you guessed it) Google.com

86

Heres the screen and the information you will needYou must set up a Google account to use all of the free tools and resources availableTry to make your Gmail address professional, to be used for Job Seeking purposes only!Start a brand new email account and use it only for job search activityThat way everything is being sent / received from one account and not lost in the mix of spam and other messages

Full explanation on next slide87

Example:Your name is Martina MacWilliams and you WANT your Google account / Gmail to be sameIf you have a common name it might be difficult to get a match for your name ( Google will tell you if its already taken)If this one didnt work, Id try: martinamacwilliams @gmail.com or [email protected] you create a password, it will tell you if it is too weak for security ( believe Google when it tells you this)You will then be asked for your birth date ..this is to prove you are not underageThere is NO reason why you need to give your real age ..I never doPick any date before 1985 and use it ( write it down with your password and put it in a safe place in case you ever get locked out of your account)Gender you can indicate or choose otherAny phone number you have will workCurrent email is the one you already use, even if it is a Gmail alreadyHARDEST part is to figure out the challenge text what do these two words mean???They are used to prove that you are not an automated machine trying to set up multiple Google accountsYou must type them in as 2 words to proceed If you cannot figure them out click the round arrow and 2 new ones will appear88You can nowCreate a Google Profile!

www.google.com/profiles for anyone who has a Gmail already but doesnt know about profiles89Heres the start of your Profile

Jenn Jobseeker is a sample profileShe will build her basic profile here to help an employer find the good stuff about her online90Now with a Professional Job Seeker Photo

Doesnt have to be shot by a pro ..just looks good / clear / no goofiness!91Which profiles will employers consider?

Self explanatory!92Who gets the interview?Applicant #1

Applicant #2

Found on their FaceBook page93Now you can add your own content that you WANT an employer to see!

By clicking on PROFILE you can essentially put a mini version of your resume online here and ONLY put what you want the public to see ( and employers!)94Now that your name is onlinehow do keep track of it?

Google has a tool for that tooand its free and easy!95Set Up a Google Alert Know immediately if your name is being used online96Once your profile is done, you MUST setup Google alerts to watch how your name is being used online ( and what an employer might out about you)Stay informed! Its your name on the internet!!Set up a Google alert to monitor your nameThis means you do NOT have to keep Googling yourself, Google will tell you when your name is being used online!96http://www.google.com/alerts

Search Query = your nameResult Type = you want to know EVERYTHING BEING SAID How often = once a dayHow many = choose best or all resultsYour email = tell Google where to send the resultsThen click on CREATE ALERT = done

Google will now email every time they find your name showing up on the internet!NOTE: you can set up as many alerts as wantIf your name has variations ( MJ Matthews) ( MaryJane Matthews) (Mary Jane Matthews) you can set up alerts for all variations97What if your Google Alert brings you to content and photos you dont want anyone to see?Samples on next slide98Remove unwanted content!

Keeping personal information out of GoogleIt's difficult to keep personal information off the web. Most people belong to social networks, post photographs, write blogs, tweet, or have personal or professional sites. But this doesn't mean that you always want this information to appear in search results.

99Here are some recommendations for controlling your reputation online :Think twice before putting personal information onlineUse privacy settings to share with family and friends ONLYAsk your friends NOT to tag you in photos, especially when you are job searching! You should try to fix the problem at the source (rather than immediately contacting Google), for the following reasons:Google doesn't own the Internet, and they don't control the content of unrelated sites that appear in our search results. Their search results simply reflect what's already out there on the web.If the content isn't removed from the original site(s), people will be able to see it (for example, by clicking a forwarded link) even if it doesn't appear in Google's search results.

100Here are some recommendations for controlling your reputation online : ( cont)If you'd be uncomfortable with a photo or piece of content being seen by strangers, think carefully about putting it on public sites. If something compromising has already been published, try to remove it from the site where it's appearing.

Removing content from Google's search results doesn't remove it from other search engines. If the content in question is on a site you own, delete the problematic blog post, content, or images. If you don't control the problematic content, contact the webmaster of the siteand ask them to remove the content or the page in question.
