Compassionate Competent Care
ConceptResuscitation of patients within an acute care setting requires intervention within a time critical framework. In order to maximise efficient use of the trolley and to allow rapid daily and monthly stock checks, a redesign of the current resus trolley was undertaken. The resus trolley was standardised with the new design enabling all staff, experienced or not, to be able to find, check and restock instruments and drugs in the shortest possible time.
When considering language barriers and time restraints visual cues are an excellent method of quick identification. A “place-mat” concept was designed using photographs of the actual instruments and drugs. The underlay of a picture allows easy recognition by the user in the absence of an item.

DesignIndividual instruments and drugs were photographed and then mapped out on to designs of the drawers and trays.

If filling the trolley from empty there are ‘place-mats’ for each basket location
There are individual ‘place-mats’ for each basket and as the mats have been laminated the medication expiry date can be written on and amended as required.
Because of the clarity of the photos on the ‘place-mat’ it is easy to distinguish the missing drugs and instruments
Design
Each drawer has been colour coded and labelled as per the ARC recommendations, so staff are able to easily identify the function of each drawer.

Time trials were conducted to measure the efficiency of the original resus trolley and the new trolley. Trails were conducted with nursing staff of different levels of working experience.
