What to view

Several police forces put CCTV stills and footage of public space disorder. For example, on the West Midlands Police website www.west-midlands.police.uk was three minutes of footage of an entry to a branch of Halifax on New Street, Birmingham; and an attempt to rip an ATM from a nearby Santander branch wall.

What to do

The riots prompted police to suggest to businesses that they make security checks and do house-keeping. Among other things: identify areas that are vulnerable to forced entry Make sure all service doors are kept locked and secure when not in use Ensure your CCTV is fully working In case of an emergency is there a record of the names of key-holders who can be contacted? Consider removing high value goods from display windows overnight Consider keeping as little cash as possible on the premises

In July the Bribery Act came into force. It makes bribery an offence, in this country, and abroad, whether it’s done by your staff or agents to gain a deal or other advantage. If you’re caught, it can prove costly, as this recent case suggests.

You can tell that the London Olympics are coming closer: counterfeit goods are on sale.

www.ipo.gov.uk/pro-crime-report

What they say

Size of the problem

As for the size of counterfeit operations, what was thought to be the UK’s biggest counterfeit DVD factory was shut in 2009. In a joint operation by City of London and Metropolitan Police, and FACT (Federation Against Copyright Theft) police raided two sites in Wembley and Southall, seizing millions of pounds worth of equipment, used as evidence in a court case that saw several men jailed. Police confiscated a large-scale professional printing press, 440 DVD burners and 60,000 copied and packaged DVDs ready for distribution. Police found 250,000 blank discs and one million printed colour covers. Visit www.fact-uk.org.uk.
