Introduction
NOTE TO INSTRUCTOR: This course is for all audiences who will be using RMS in their jobs. It will be delivered to most audiences independent of their job-specific RMS training. However, it will be incorporated into the Transfer courses as the second lesson.
This course is meant only as an introduction. Participants are not expected to fully master RMS in this course, only become familiar with the basic functions. The intensive RMS training comes in their job-specific courses.
The exercises in this course are directed discovery learning. Some participants may not complete the exercise in the allotted time. This is not a problem, as they will get additional practice in their job-specific course. You will need to be reasonably strict about time in order to complete this course within the hour time limit.

SAY:
This is a general introduction to the use of the Retek Management System also known as RMS. You will be getting additional RMS training on the specific functions you will be using on the job during your job-specific training courses.
I know that it’s a great temptation when you’re sitting in front of a computer, to go off on your own. I urge you to resist this temptation because it gets everyone out of sync as we work through the demonstrations and exercises – wasting valuable time and potentially pushing us past our scheduled completion time.
So, please stick with the program so I can get you out of here on time!
Next Slide Transition
Encourage participation during Q&A and encourage questions.
If participants get stuck during exercises, they should be encouraged to use the Users Manual for procedural guidance. In this way, they will become familiar with the contents and where the instructions can be found. Only after they have reviewed the instructions in the Guide should they ask for help from the instructor.

Time: 15 seconds
SAY: RMS is the new inventory management system that you will use to:

Current
Future
Separate perpetual and financial inventory systems require frequent and costly synchronization.
One system manages both the quantity and its value simultaneously providing more accurate and timely information.
Key Ingredient: More accurate information provides for better management and reporting of inventory.
Time: 30 seconds
In today’s world, …
[CLICK FOR ANIMATION] we use a separate application to track inventory quantity and inventory value. It is time-consuming and costly to keep these systems reconciled and maintaining accuracy is difficult, if not impossible.
With the implementation of RMS…
[CLICK FOR ANIMATION] both the quantity and value of inventory will be maintained within a single system saving time and expense and increasing accuracy of reporting..
[CLICK FOR ANIMATION] This is a major step forward for Gap.

In this course, we will be introducing you to RMS, giving you practice in both locating and entering information into the system. First we will focus on navigation.. .
Detailed Leader Notes: None.
SAY:
The first thing you see after you log in is the Retek Application window with Retek Enterprise Start window displayed within it. We will just refer to the Retek Enterprise Start window as the Start window.
The Retek application window is like the Windows desktop: it is the container for all of the various Retek data windows that you will using to interact with the application. Retek refers to these data windows as forms.
[CLICK] At the top of the Retek application window is the main menu bar. The contents of some of the menus change to match the requirements of the currently active form.
The Start window is your primary navigation tool and you will be doing a number of exercises to become familiar with it.
[CLICK] At the top of the Start window is a button bar.
[CLICK] In the middle, are two panes that display the folders and their contents.
[CLICK] At the bottom, there are a set of navigation controls.
You will become familiar with all of these elements in the hands-on exercises that follow.
Next Slide Transition

You are familiar with the folder icon from Windows.

Let’s review what is changing and what is staying the same in inter-company transfers...
Detailed Leader Notes:
ASK:
Did anyone notice that two windows opened when you initially accessed RMS in your browser?
Because RMS is programmed in the Java language, there is an “extra” Retek Information systems window in addition to the Retek application window you are working in.
If you minimize the Retek application window, or you open other windows on top of it and want to open it on top…
[CLICK] you want to select the button with the “cup of java” logo as opposed to the Retek Information button.
Next Slide Transition
In addition to the RMS Navigation User Manual and the Quick Reference Guide we have prepared for you, you can also access the online help built into the application to get answers to your questions…
Detailed Leader Notes:
There are several basic types of forms:
[CLICK] The search form allows you to select one or more records by entering a variety of relevant search criteria..
[CLICK] The results form lists all records that match the search criteria.
[CLICK] And, of course, there are forms for entering and viewing inventory information.

3. From an explanatory text box in some data windows
Time: 30 seconds
SAY:
There are three methods for accessing the online help built into RMS.
[CLICK] First, you can use the Help menu. This menu provides access to the help system as a whole, direct access to the help page for the currently active data window, explanations of error messages, and a listing of the keystroke combinations to activate common functions.
[CLICK] Every data window has a button bar. Clicking the button with the question mark will display the help page for that window.
[CLICK] A few very complex data windows provide a scrolling text box that automatically displays concise explanations of the active control: text box, button, check box, etc.
For all the other windows, you will have to access the window-specific help. Each window control and function is described on the page devoted to the window.
