If you’re a frequent traveller or planning your first visit to theKruger National Park, this is the issue for you. The Retreat team

visited various towns en route to Kruger, and we showcase thebest attractions, activities and accommodation in Sabie,Hazyview, Hoedspruit, Tzaneen, Polokwane and Modimolle. Thereis definitely more to a trip to the Kruger than just the Kruger.

Closer to Gauteng we visited the Muldersdrift area for the traveller opting not to take on the long road. Located just 30 minutes from Pretoria or Johannesburg, this area offers day retreats, weekend retreats and is also perfectly located as a conference and wedding destination.

I am standing in front of Tembo, one of the six elephants who callElephant Whispers in Hazyview their home. One can only graspthe enormous size of these gentle giants when being this close toone of them. Send me a picture and letter about your ideal “retreat” to stand in line to win great Canon cameras (p4).– Renier van Vuuren <[email protected]>

Dear Editor,

I visited Pretoria recently and came across the Retreat magazine at Menlyn Mall. I loved it and hadto bring a copy back home with me. I also thoughtof showcasing my home as I am an Cape Townian.

This picture was taken when I was hiking upTable Mountain at the beginning of the year. Thescenery and tranquility was great. Just listening toyourself and nature and getting away from all thenoise and gelling close to nature.

Overlooking the sea and the view of the mountain was just breathtaking and seeing housesof the “lucky” ones who get to live close to nature.

This was one of my 2010 highlights and this picture reminds me of that.

Pearl Peter

Second place, well done!

Hi Vanessa,

Your picture truly reflects an ideal retreat – we wish wewere there. Congratulations onwinning the Canon PowerShot A470.

Letters Dear Retreat5

Hi Retreat,

Fascinated by Zebra tracks, all the teens draw near to Dewaldwho explains how to distinguish Zebra tracks from the otherfootprints near a salt lick on Doornkloof. Doornkloof is the gamefarm of the Voortrekkers between Kroonstad and Lindley, and isused for youth camps. The farm is significant because it’s theoriginal farm of Sarel Cilliers and and it’s a Historical Landmarkas the house is still standing. Good rains made the field lush andgreen. This photo was taken of the Grade nines attending acamp on the farm, while hiking on Sunday afternoon.

Hi Retreat,

I went on a birthday break with my kids to the Ranch Protea Hotel in Limpopo. It was ajourney of self-discovery, enjoyment and reconnection with nature.

Kgomotso Makobe

Indeed, and we certainly pulled it off majestically!

Hey Retreat,

This picture was taken on my recent visit to Nelspruit. The Mbombela stadium with its giraffe pillars calls youfrom a distance as you come into the capital ofMpumalanga. I answered its call – and I was lucky’cause the stadium is open for tours. This was just fewdays before the official opening of the stadium byBafana Bafana and Thailand. Then and there I knewthat going to Mpumalanga for the 2010 Fifa World Cupgames will be fantastic, and I concluded that indeedSouth Africa was ready for the historic, mammoth andgreatest football tournament in the world.

SABIE

Page 7: Retreat, Issue 4, En route to Kruger

The sleepy town of Sabie, nestled in a forested valleyon the escarpment of the Drakensberg inMpumalanga, is a sight to behold.

Sabie’s fate was decided during a hunting expedition in1871 when a stray bullet struck a rock face and revealed

a glint of gold, signalling the start of the gold rush to thearea. The first inhabitants however, were the San or Bush-men people, as can be seen from cave paintings discoveredin the area.

The Sabie River was teeming with crocodiles at the time, and there are still crocodile farms in the area. The Shangaanpeople called the river uluSaba, meaning ‘the river of fear’,and this is where the name “Sabie” originated from yearslater.

The town today is much more relaxed than in the heydaysof the gold rush, and the area around Sabie has been transformed into one of the largest man-made forests in theworld, truly a beautiful sight next to the majestic mountains. The sleepy and friendly nature of the town makes itself apparent with all sorts of curio shops and restaurants liningthe main street.

As far as activities go, a variety of walks and hiking trailsare available while some spectacular natural waterfalls offercountless photo opportunities. Some of the waterfalls thatcan be found around Sabie, include the beautiful Bridal Falls,Horseshoe, Lone Creek and Mac Mac waterfalls.

The town is also known as the place where the famous Jockof the Bushveld story originated from. Sir Percy Fitzpatrick’sbook tells about the amazing adventures he and Jock sharedin and around the Sabie area.

With its panoramic views and friendly inhabitants, Sabie isa must see if you’re in the area.

If you’re feeling in the mood for a close encounter of the wildkind, Elephant Whispers is the perfect place. Here guests

are treated to one-on-one interactions with one of nature’smost amazing creatures.

The facility has six tame elephants in total, from the massive six ton Tembo to tiny Lindiwe, each has its ownunique personality.

Rescued from planned culling, the elephants found a newhome at Elephant Whispers where they now serve as ambassadors for their kind.

One of the most valuable aspects of the tour was the information we gained about elephants, and how strangelysimilar they are to us. The experience of touching an elephant, feeling its rough skin, feeding it nuts through its trunk andeven standing between its front legs for a photo is somethingamazing and really gives one an added respect for these gentle giants.

Guests can choose to do the elephant interaction and/or safari, both definitely worth it. The view from the back of anelephant is spectacular and feeling the lopsided walk of thesemassive creatures is truly a magical experience.

The reserve houses the big five and is especially known forits leopard sightings. These majestic and elusive cats aren’t

frequently seen in the wild, but for some reason Sabi Sandsseems to be an exception, like we found out first-hand.

As we were idling around at camp a call came in from oneof the rangers that they had spotted a leopard. We quicklyjumped into our squeaky Land Rover and set off in pursuit.Amazingly, we were able to get within two metres of this impressive cat as he was stalking a herd of some 300 buffalocrossing the road nearby.

The night drives are especially memorable comprising afour hour game drive with sundowners and dinner in a traditional African boma afterwards. The highly trained rangerswere able to supply us with some amazing photography opportunities and we were able to enjoy our sundowners nextto a watering hole while buffalo and rhino came by to quenchtheir thirsts mere metres from where we were standing.

It’s easy to see why Sabi Sands is one of the most popularreserves in the country, delivering unparalleled levels of gameviewing opportunities.

It is said that the town got its name when, after a gruellingtrek, an exhausted pioneer removed his hat and threw it into

the Sandspruit River. He decided to stay and the town becameknown as Hoedspruit.

Like most of the lowveld towns, Hoedspruit has a relaxed atmosphere and friendly locals, a perfect stop if you need abreak from the urban grind.

The town is also famous in part for the Hoedspruit Air ForceBase and the town’s Eastgate Airport has recently been earmarked to be upgraded into an international airport, whichwill make the area even more accessible in the future.

Wildlife from all over the country are brought to the centrein the hopes of being rehabilitated and re- released back

into the wild. When the extent of an animal’s injuries or otherfactors prohibits the animal from being returned to the wild, they are cared for at the centre and serve as ambassadors fortheir kind.

Among the many animals now housed at the centre arelion, leopard, cheetah, wild dogs, black rhino, hyena and several species of birds.

The escape artistOne of the centre’s more eccentric inhabitants is a honeybadger that is such a skilled escape artist it would make Houdini turn green. This energetic tyke once broke out of hisenclosure and waltzed straight up to bite the biggest male lionin the reserve, showing him what he thought of his incessant roaring. He even built a makeshift ladder out of branches onceto escape when he couldn’t dig underneath his enclosure

anymore. He is but one of the many unique animals you canmeet when visiting Moholoholo.

A non-profit organisation where the entrance fees all goback into the feeding of the animals and up keeping of theircages, donations are always welcome and go directly into specific vital projects.

A volunteer program also exists where volunteers can stayat the camp for between 1 to 12 weeks, learning aboutwildlife and the African bush while taking care of the centre’swild residents.

The centre is also focused on breeding, with successfulbreeding programs for crowned eagle and serval, among others, having been conducted in the past.

The centre strives to teach visitors the importance and delicacy of the African ecosystem, putting special focus on theinterconnected nature of the natural world. For bookings callthem on 015-795-5236 / 082-907-5984 or fax: 015-795-5333 or email: [email protected].

The Mountain View camp, nestled between Lowveld AcasiaWoodlands, has become a choice destination for nature

enthusiasts and school groups over the years. They have aspecial focus on education, compared to that of the more holiday centred Ya Mati and Forest Camp lodges.

Featuring both bed and breakfast and self-catering chalets, the camp can house up to 35 people. It can also accommodate groups of up to a hundred in a special camp.

The educational focus of the camp is evident and they offervarious courses for adults, school children and game rangersalike covering subjects from tracking to anti-poaching.A 12-day introduction to conservation course that deals withall the practical elements of aiding wildlife is also offered atthe camp.

The 4500 hectare farm sports its own share of wildlife withbuffalo, rhino, njala and leopard roaming freely.

Mountain View offers guests a classic African bush experience. Relaxing around the waterhole deck in the after-noon as animals come in to drink and chatting late into thenight around a crackling fire under the starry African night isan experience that you can’t put a price tag on. MoholoholoEndangeredSpecies CentreThe Moholoholo endangered species centre, situated 30 km outside Hoedspruit, is one of the most inspiringwildlife centres we’ve ever visited. Established in 1992 the day-to-day running of the centre is undertaken bywildlife enthusiast and conservaonist, Brian Jones.

Situated a few minutes down the road from the Moholoholo rehabilitaon centre, the Moholoholo Mountain View camp offersvisitors a comfortable and affordable stay in the bush.

Tzaneen

Situated in the heart of the Limpopo province in thefoothills of the Wolkberg mountains, Tzaneen is a gem

of a town, perfect for that breakaway holiday. The name originated from the Sotho word ‘tsaneng’,

meaning ‘come together’. The town sports a high rainfallrate and as such the area is surrounded by a veritabletreasure trove of indigenous flowers and trees, leading tosome nicknaming it the ‘garden town’.

Guest houses, lodges, game farms and backpackers dotthe countryside in and around the town offering visitors awide variety of choices.

A wonderful sight to see in the area is the Modjadji Nature Reserve which contains one of the most fascinating populations of plants in South Africa. The reserve housesthe largest concentration of a single cycad species in theworld, the Modjadji cycad. These plants form an ancientnatural forest which can be viewed in its unspoilt statethanks to strict protection by the succeeding generationsof Modjadji (rain queens), whose tribe inhabits the area.

If you enjoy plant life but would also appreciate a delicious cold beer, you can do both by heading over tothe Sunland ‘Big Baobab’ pub. This massive boabab is thewidest of its species in the world, carbon dated to bearound 6000 years old. A large part of its fame comes notfrom its size though, but from the fact that there is a pubsituated inside the tree.

Able to accommodate up to 50 patrons complete withbarstools, dartboard, music and a natural fridge, this mayjust be the most unique spot to enjoy a cold one.

For an intimate wildlife encounter, Mowana Game Farmis the place to be. The farm also sports its own residenthippo, named Hippie, who has been hand raised afterbeing found alone in the bush at a very young age. Hippieresides in one of the dams on the farm and eagerly welcomes visitors. Call Mowana lodge on 015-304-3333.

Polokwane

Polokwane, formerly known as Pietersburg, is the capital cityof the Limpopo province. The largest destination in our

guide, Polokwane is recognised as a city. With enough amenities to keep anyone busy, Polokwane is

also centrally located with many lodges and game reserves inclose proximity. It’s also the last major city before one crossesinto Botswana or Zimbabwe, making it a popular hub.

One of the first things you’ll see when approaching the townis the impressive new Peter Mokaba soccer stadium. Inspiredby the Baobab tree the stadium is supported by giant trunk-likestructures giving it an impressive and genuinely African look.

Exploring this rapidly developing city with all its sights andsounds is an experience any South African traveller shouldhave on their agenda.

As the main commercial centre of the Waterberg district,Modimolle offers modern convenience, historic discoveries

and a wide range of activities to keep travellers occupied. The name Modimolle means ‘The Spirits have eaten’,

referring to the local tribes’ tradition of offering food to thespirits of their forefathers. The name also refers to the picturesque Modimolle hill, also known as Kranskop, a signature sight in the area that can be spotted from the N1.

Modimolle offers visitors a huge number of attractions andactivities such as game lodges, nature reserves, rock climbing, hiking trails and fishing and boating all available inthe area.

The town is especially rich in history and if you have a tastefor it you can visit the original locomotive used for the railwayline between the town and Pretoria in 1898. Visitors can alsostop by the oldest church on the continent north of Pretoria, established in 1889. The Modimolle museum, previous residence of old prime minister JG Strijdom, also sports a richand fascinating display.

The Lapalala game reserve is a beautiful and very popularattraction in the area. The reserve has a heavy focus on conservation and today sports populations of the heavily endangered black rhino, sable, roan and tsessebe antelope, making it one of the last remaining places where one canview these animals in the wild.

The town is flanked by the Nylsvlei Wetland and the Waterberg Biosphere reserves, leading to some nicknamingthe town the “Gateway to Africa Eden”.

The five-star Golfer’s Inn, situated inside the Koro Creek Golf Estate,

should, for any discerning businessmanor woman, be home away from home. That is if home is a luxurious mansion, with concierge service, private butler andchef creating five course masterpieces.

Five-starGolfer’s Inn caters to business people orvacationers looking to break-away fromthe big city lights, to spend a few days ina more peaceful environment. There arefour rooms available, each with all themod cons expected from a five-star institution. These can be booked separately while it’s also possible to reserve the complete house. The Inn iselegantly decorated with a subtle golftheme, although it was the many paintings, modern fireplace and 18thcentury liqueur cabinet that drew our attention.

PatioIn the temperate climate of Modimollewe were able to relax outside on thepatio, complete with braai, deck chairsnext to the pool, and a lovely big-screen television to make sure we did not missthe action on the rugby field. The patioalso served as venue for breakfast, whiledinner was served under a marvellousglass chandelier.

Five-course mealIt was the five-course dinner, preparedfor us by our host and London trainedchef, JP Joubert, that was the hit of ourweekend. Each dish was stylishly presented, with two starters, a maincourse and two deserts making their wayto the six seater table. If we werepressed to choose, the crocodile starterwould be our favourite. Crocodile can benotorious for being too dry, but these fillets brazed in cream and served withblack pepper and glazed watermelon

eduction, were just about perfect. Oncefinished with our coffee, our slippers wereheated up for us before we retreated toour room.

Golf and GameThe Golfer’s Inn would not have beencalled so if it did not involve some activityon the 18-hole Koro Creek golf course. AGolfer’s Package allows for your place tobe booked on the course, with tee-offtime, golf cart and score card ready whenyou are. The golf course also include agame park with gazelle, giraffe, kudu andwildebeest available for viewing, althougha 4x4 is recommended for the drivethrough the reserve.

The company who owns The Golfer’sInn, also owns the local 100 seater Waterberg Convention Centre and VillaOlien guest house, making business package deals an option. As a exclusivebusiness stop-over The Golfer’s Inn ishighly recommended.

The Elephant Whisperer is ariveting and emotional read,

telling about the plight of a herdof elephants caught in the middle of human problems.

Lawrence Anthony is arenowned conservationist andfounder of the Earth Organization, he is also theowner of the Thula Thula gamereserve in Kwa-Zulu Natal

where the story takes place. In 1999 he agreed to accept aherd of rogue elephants from a reserve in Mpumalanga, which would have been put to death since they were so troublesome. After constructing intricate bomas and electrified fences, the herd arrived on the reserve only tosmash through the man-made barriers within hours of arrival.

Throughout the book we see Lawrence and the rest of thestaff at Thula Thula fight a battle against nature, human encroachment, overeager hunters and even poachers, all tosave a herd of confused and traumatised elephants.

If you’re a nature lover, or simply interested in Africanwildlife, The Elephant Whisperer will quickly find a place inyour heart and in your book collection. R119

Spending 128 days at sea to cross the Pacific ocean mightnot seem like a major achievement, but doing so in a boat

made of nothing more than plastic bottles adds some weightto the effort. This is exactly what the six man crew of the Plastiki, an 18 metre catamaran did, sailing more than 8000nautical miles from San Francisco in the US to reach their finaldestination at Sydney harbour in July.

Skippered by 31 year old expedition leader David de Rothschild, the Plastiki expedition was undertaken to bring attention to the environmental impact of plastic bottles.

The craft is made from 12 500 recycled PET bottles andheld together by organic glue, ensuring that the whole vesselcan be recycled, with even the mast made from recycled aluminium irrigation pipe. Powered by solar panels and windmills, the Plastiki even has a small vegetable garden onboard.

For more info on the Plastiki visit www.theplastiki.com.

Traveller’s Tale31 Survival

Against all oddsAlistair Gellatly, Arthur Taylor, his wife Fay and her parents

Clive and Brenda Kelly were enjoying a peaceful holidayon the banks of the tranquil Zambezi river. On one of the finaldays of the expedition the men prepared their fishing boat togo out. After a quiet afternoon of fishing and watching thewildlife on the river the party was in high spirits and decidedto go for a picnic on a nearby island.

As they made their way towards the spot, disaster struck. An infuriated hippo suddenly lunged at the craft knockingeveryone into the river before disappearing just as quickly.Amid the frantic scrambling and panic Arthur, Fay and Brendagot separated from the boat.

Stuck in the middle of a crocodile infested river, Alistair decided to swim for the nearest bank to get help. After an excruciating swim he finally made it to the bank only to findhimself staring directly into the face of danger. A large crocodile was barring his way and as he tried to scare it awayit struck, forcing Alistair beneath the swirling brown waters. The crocodile would have killed him if it wasn’t for some quickthinking. Alistair clenched his fist and rammed his left armdown the crocodile’s throat, pushing down a seal that keepswater out. As the croc started to drown it released him and abadly wounded Alistair made his way out of the water.

With his arm broken in three places and his shoulderripped out of its socket he wasn’t in any shape to survive, letalone get help for the others.

As night approached the temperature on the river droppeddramatically but those stuck in the river were well off compared to Alistair, broken, bleeding, bacterial infectionspreading and the predators of the night descending on thescent of his blood.

In the dead of night Alistair heard the sound of grazingnearby and saw a Cape buffalo metres away from him. One ofthe big five, a buffalo isn’t an animal to take lightly. But forsome reason, perhaps it could tell that he was injured, thebuffalo didn’t attack Alistair but actually lay down close tohim. Reassured by the buffalo’s presence he drifted off tosleep, having lost a lot of blood, and just thankful that s omething was not attempting to kill him.

The next morning he got a wake up call from hell as a vicious swarm of driver ants, swarming in their thousands, attacked him. The only insect known to have killed and consumed humans, the bites triggered a jolt of adrenalinethrough his body which allowed him to get away.

Now 24 hours after the crocodile attack, Alistair was closeto death. As he forced himself to the edge of the river he sawa couple relaxing on the opposite bank, but he was too weakto call out to them and they left, shattering his last chance ofrescue.

Meanwhile the rest of the group had been found by twokayakers on the river. They hadn’t heard from Alistair in hoursthough and had no idea if he was still alive.

Lying in the sand, the slowly dying Alistair suddenly foundhimself being picked up and placed in a boat. The couple whohe had thought had left earlier had miraculously spotted himon their way back and had rescued him.

His injuries were treated and today Alistair continues hislife in Africa, counting himself among the lucky few to havesurvived an encounter with wildlife on the banks of the Zambezi.
