    ALL I NEED

    Colorful and funky

    combinations of

    shapes and images

    are easy to achieve

    with a few rubber

    stamps and some ink

    pads. Pucker up!

GETTING CRAFTYTo make a crisp fold in a piece of paper, score it first with a sty-

lus or a bone folder. Place your ruler on the paper and run the

stylus or bone folder along the ruler. This compresses the paper

fibers and makes it easier to fold.

Light a fire the next time you send a card with one made using this clever matchbook design.

The pages fit neatly inside, so that the cover can close just like a matchbook.

1Trim one piece of ivory cardstockto 23⁄4" x 91⁄4" (7cm x 23cm) andanother piece to 21⁄2" x 91⁄2" (6cm x24cm). On one side of the largerpiece, randomly stamp with thecircles stamp and the chalk inkpads. Make some of the circles gooff of the edge of the cardstock, and overlap several of the circles.

2Turn the stamped piece over andlay it horizontally. Use the penciland ruler to make light marks along the top and bottom of thecardstock at these measurementsfrom the left side: 3⁄4", 11⁄2", 51⁄4"and 51⁄2" (2cm, 4cm, 13cm and14cm). Use the bone folder andthe ruler to score vertical lines atthese marks, then fold the cardstockat the scored lines, making all foldsgo up from the stamped side.

3 Lay the smaller piece of ivorycardstock horizontally and again, using the ruler and a pencil, lightlymake marks along the top and bottom of the cardstock at thesemeasurements from the left side: 31⁄2", 61⁄4" and 91⁄4" (9cm, 16cm and 23cm). Score vertically at all of these marks, and fold thecardstock accordion-style.

4 Lay the second piece so that the 31⁄2" (9cm) segment is on your left, followed by two 3" (8cm) segments.Lay the stamped cardstock so that thetwo 3⁄4" (2cm) segments are on yourleft. Center the smaller cardstock topto bottom on top of the front of thestamped cardstock and leave the leftsides flush (the top cardstock willoverhang the stamped cardstock onthe right side). Staple the two piecestogether at the center of the left edge.

5Punch a 3⁄4" (2cm) circlefrom the bronze cardstockscrap and a 1⁄2" (1cm) circlefrom the beige cardstock scrap. Usingthe 1⁄16" (2mm) hole punch, make ahole in the center of each circle.Punch a hole 7⁄8" (2cm) from the shortside of the stamped cardstock, centered opposite the stapled end.Stack the circles and use the copperbrad to attach them to the stampedside of the card.

6Fold up the stamped cardstock tocreate a matchbook cover and foldthe inner cardstock to fit inside of thecover. Insert the end of the coverunder the folded flap to keep thebooklet closed.

Although the patterns and mood of the

together because they share the same

    ATOMIC FREEZE FRAME cardJudi Watanabe

1Trim two pieces of the white cardstockto 51⁄2" x 11" (14cm x 28cm) and foldeach in half to make two 51⁄2" (14cm)square cards. Trim another piece ofwhite cardstock to a 23⁄8" (6cm)square and a piece of turquoisecardstock to a 25⁄8" (7cm) square.

2Using the yellow-green, lilac and lightblue ink pads, stamp one funky frameimage of each color on the insideright side of one card. Placement canbe random, but make sure the shapesoverlap one another a bit. (See photoas a guide.) Working on a cuttingmat, cut out the insides of the frameswith a craft knife, being careful not tocut off the corners that protrude insideother frames.

3Stack the stamped card on top of theother folded card and, with a pencil, lightly trace around the insides of the frames. Cut the traced shapes outwith a craft knife, again, using thecutting mat.

4From the laminating sheet, trim three2" (5cm) squares, and from thewindow plastic, trim three 13⁄4" (4cm)squares. Peel the backing off of thelaminating squares and sprinkle oncolored metal flakes, glitters, beadsand confetti, leaving a 1⁄4" (6mm)border clear. Center one square of thewindow plastic over each embellishedlaminate square and press the twopieces together. Using the 1⁄4" (6mm)adhesive portion that is still exposed, adhere the squares to the back of thestamped frames, trimming the plasticwhere images overlap, if necessary.

5Apply double-sided tape to the back of the stamped card, running the tapearound the plastic squares and aroundthe perimeter of the card. Adhere theother trimmed card to the taped card, lining up the cut-out areas. Your cardshould now open up and have awindowed “page” inside.

6On the last inside page of the card(the portion that shows behind thewindows), stamp two rockets using theblack pigment ink pad. When the inkis dry, use a brush and the light blueand yellow-green ink pads to color inthe rocket shapes. Leave the windowof the rockets without color. Stamp theelliptical row stamp (on the RetroOrnaments cube) in yellow-green, sothat it runs off the bottom of the card, then stamp the martian head atop therow. Stamp one atomic image incharcoal gray ink beside one rocket.

Based on “shaker” cards, this “freeze frame” card freezes the sparkle and glitz,

4The end that has a 17⁄8" (5cm)segment will be the top of theportfolio and has an extra flap foldedtoward the inside for added stability. With this flap folded in, punch a hole with the 1⁄8" (3mm) hole punchthrough both layers, about 1⁄2" (1cm)from the folded edge and centeredside to side.

5Punch another hole in the other endof the cardstock about 1" (3cm) infrom the edge and off center (eitherdirection). Punch holes in the two cut-out shapes from step 1. Using theeyelet setting tool, hammer andprotective surface, attach theseshapes to the stamped side of theportfolio with eyelets.

6Tie the decorative twine around theshape on the bottom flap and trim tohide the short end. The length cannow be used to wrap around the topshape to close the portfolio. Set theportfolio aside.

7For the inside of the portfolio, firstcreate an accordion with theenvelopes by adhering the back ofone envelope to the inside of the flapof a second envelope, using gluestick. Continue stacking the sixenvelopes. Adhere the front of theflap of the top envelope to the insidecenter panel of the portfolio. Theenvelopes will be folded in alternatedirections to fit inside the portfolio.

8Use assorted stamps, ink pads and50s hostess clip art figures todecorate the envelopes, including theback of the bottom envelope. Use afine-point brown pen to write“Recipes” on the front cover, next tothe closures. Write “Appetizers,”“Beverages,” “Main Course” or othercategories you choose on the fronts ofthe envelopes.

9Decorate the index cards with thesame stamps and inks, keeping theimagery around the outside of thecards and insert a couple into eachenvelope to serve as recipe cards.

GETTING CRAFTYCleaning your stamps the right way helps to keep them in good shape. Use a stamp cleaning

product that you can get at any craft or stamping store and just follow the directions. When

you’re using the same stamp in multiple colors, like for this card, clean the stamp if you’re going

from a dark color to a light. It’s not usually necessary if you go from light to dark.

What was the style in the 60s?

    Just about everything, according to

Joy Shih in her book Funky Fabrics

of the Sixties. Pastels were left

over from the 50s and were

turning to more earthy colors at

the beginning of the 60s. By mid-

    decade, floral and paisley designs

were all the rage, in bright neon

and psychedelic colors. By the end

of the 60s, hot shades of yellow

and orange had taken over and

    carried through into the 70s.

    1Cut a 12" x 6" (30cm x 15cm) piece of the flowers paperand fold down to 6" (15cm) square.

2Open up the paper and on one half, about 1⁄2" (1cm) fromthe fold and centered side to side, trace a 5" x 31⁄2" (13cmx 9cm) oval using a template. With the paper open andon a cutting mat, cut out and remove the oval, using acraft knife.

3Fold the place card closed and punch a hole just belowthe fold line on both ends of the card. Set the flowereyelets by inserting an eyelet through the front of the cardand placing it face down on the cutting mat. Use theeyelet setter and a hammer to set the eyelets. (See page89 for instructions.)

4Print the guest's name on a piece of white cardstock. Here, I added a few retro flowers too. Trim the name using a 43⁄4" x 31⁄4" (12cm x 8cm) oval template. Applydimensional adhesive dots to the back of the name piece.Center the name inside the cutout oval and adhere to theback inside panel of the card.

5Print the event information on white cardstock and cutdown to 3" x 1" (8cm x 3cm). Adhere the label to a pieceof brown cardstock, using double-sided tape and trimdown, leaving 1⁄8" (3mm) on all sides. Adhere the label to the front of the frame, using double-sided tape andcenter it below the oval.

6String four beads on the suede lacing and string one endthrough each eyelet from the front to the back. Tie a knot at each end.

This piece doubles as a place marker for the dinner and a keepsake

frame for each guest. For the party, hang the frames from the backs of

the chairs with each guest’s name inside. Send the frame home with

each guest so they can place a party photo inside.
