From the East

Brethren, One half of the year has sailed by. The many events and planned socials are for your enjoyment. Please come out and support your lodge and officers as well as meet some of our new Brethren and their families. Of note, on past events was the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter No. 184 Breakfast social held at Applebee’s on Saturday 17 June. For those that attended, THANK YOU! The Eastern Star is having an Ice Cream Social on the 15th of July from 1-3 p.m., if you’re able, please come out and enjoy some good friendships as well as delicious ice cream and assorted treats. The lodge will have a Spaghetti Social on the 27th of June. This is a Tuesday. I moved the date from the 28th to the 27th due to another function. We will be traveling to Great Bridge Lodge on the 28th of June. As June is almost over and July rolls in, so does the heat of the Summer and more family time spent together. To this end, we will take a Summer Break from lodge meetings and degree work after our Stated Communication which is on the 13th of July and will resume on August 8th which is an Officers’ meeting just prior to our Stated meeting on the 10th of August. The lodge is available for coaching and social time should you desire to go to the lodge for that purpose. No Lodge on the 4th of July. We are moving forward in our degree work. On the 15th of June, we conferred an Entered Apprentice Degree. We will have examined a Fellowcraft (Brother Ernesto “Ernie” Perez) on the 22nd of June. Our Senior Warden, Brother John Brown, is putting the Master Mason degree team together and we will start practicing soon. Dates and time to follow via email. Our Senior Deacon, Brother Marlo Pilar, is currently in rehab at Lake Taylor after just having knee surgery. Please keep Brother Marlo in your thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery. I am tentatively planning a family gathering at the lodge in August. This will be a game day/night to include hopefully horseshoes, cornhole tournament and additional games of your choice. More info in our next Taper. Our fundraising efforts are still in full swing. Brother John Brown has singlehandedly “crushed” our dilapidated sidewalk. We have replaced this with Red/Charcoal Brick Pavers. As a benefit to our lodge Building Fund, you can purchase one or more bricks (4x8) for $75.00 each. They will be engraved with 3 lines not to exceed 15 characters per line. This will allow a clipart addition such as square and compass or

Lynnhaven Masonic Lodge No. 220, AF & AM July, 2017 Virginia Beach, Virginia Our 55th Year

From the West Brethren, This is a continuation of my study on the Holy Saints John. I will continue with St. John the Evangelist. Certainly St. John the Evangelist is important to us as Masons as well. There are many striking reasons why Freemasons chose the Evangelist as Patron. Chiefly, the writings of this John read almost like Masonic ritual. The Gospel of John begins, “In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and, etc.” Nowhere else in the Bible since the beginning of Genesis familiar to all Freemasons is the concept of light so inextricably entwined with the idea of the divine spirit. As we progress through the higher degrees the concept of the word, the Light and the Divine as inseparable parts of the whole of Creation become of primary importance. John the Evangelist leads us forward in that direction. Also of Masonic importance is that John the Evangelist is described as among the most loyal of the Disciples of Christ and one of the closest to Jesus. Even in death Jesus entrusts the care of his Mother to John, who we may assume was as many ways his best friend on earth. Brethren there is so much information available on our Patron Saint and I have barely scratched the surface. I hope I have whet your appetite enough to carry out your own research Sincerely and Fraternally,

John Brown,Senior Warden 757-573-5027 cell

Brethren, Summer is finally upon us, and while our Lodge may be dark, we should not be. While taking time to enjoy these long days and warm nights, we should all strive to take advantage of this time to give of ourselves to those around us, continuing to spread the light of Freemasonry. Remember, our Craft is much more than just a ritual. How we are perceived is by how we are seen outside of the Lodge. Have a great summer and I hope to see each of you at our August Stated, and also any degree nights as well. Sincerely & Fraternally,

Brian M. Adams Junior Warden 757-544-6854

LEO Minute

“Courage”

Of the four cardinal virtues of Masonry (Temperance, Fortitude, Prudence and Justice), what is the real meaning behind Fortitude? We know that Fortitude is related directly to the heart that resides within the faithful breast and that Fortitude equates to courage. Masonry teaches us that Fortitude is “equally distant from rashness and cowardice.” Hence courage is not the absence of fear. As Brother John Wayne would say “courage is being scared to death, but saddling up anyway.” Therefore, a courageous man faces down his fears enabling him to undergo any pain, peril or danger and that in the face of the sectarianism, intolerance and hatred that exist in the world. A Mason will make use of and apply the lesser known kinds of courage; moral, intellectual, social and finally spiritual in forging his path in pursuit of becoming a better man.
