2003 SEASON REVIEW

A great run in soccer doesn’t always result in a goal. Thereare great moments – a deft touch of a ball, a sweet juke, a laser-likeshot – but those moments don’t guarantee a score. While the 2003Maryland Terrapins didn’t accomplish their ultimate goal of a na-tional title, that doesn’t mean it wasn’t another great run for the team.

It would be easy to dwell on what the Terps did not accomplishif it wasn’t for the exhaustive list of their achievements. A secondconsecutive College Cup appearance. A school-record tying 20 wins. The team’s first regular season Atlantic Coast Conference title in over30 years. Maryland’s first No. 1 ranking in the National SoccerCoaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll. Ludwig Field atten-dance records. Two first team All-Americans in Scott Buete andSumed Ibrahim and one Hermann Trophy finalist (Sumed). Theprogram’s 500th win. The team’s highest winning percentage in 35years. The successes of the entire season easily outweigh the dis-appointment of the outcome of one game.

After opening the season with two wins at the Diadora Chal-lenge in Omaha, Neb., the Terps faced off with defending NCAAchampion UCLA in a rematch of the 2002 national semifinals. In frontof the seventh-largest crowd in NCAA history to watch a regularseason game and the largest crowd in Ludwig Field history (6,143),the Terps defeated the Bruins 1-0 on the strength of Abe Thompson’spenalty kick in the 56th minute. The win ascended Maryland to thetop spot in the NSCAA poll, its first-ever No. 1 ranking in that poll.

The Terps rolled off six more victories, including the program’s500th victory over No. 16 Wake Forest, before falling on the road toNorth Carolina. After that loss, though, the Terps heated right backup. Hermann Trophy finalist Sumed Ibrahim was starting to get ontrack for Maryland and demonstrating his dynamic talents. Jason

Garey, who was seeing more minutesbecause of an injury to striker AbeThompson, became a reliable scorerup front. Maryland’s dominant backline flexed its muscle and kept teamsscoreless and frustrated. A 1-0 win

over Vi rg in ia securedMaryland’s first ACCregular season titlesince 1971 and gave

the Terps the top seed in the ACCTournament for the first time inschool history as Maryland fin-ished the regular season with a16-2 overall record (5-1 ACC).

Due to their stellar regularseason, several Terps earnedAll-ACC recognition, includinghead coach Sasho Cirovski, whowas named ACC Coach of theYear for the first time in his career.

Seth Stammler, Sumed Ibrahimand Buete were allnamed to the firstteam, while Thomp-son, Domenic Medi-

ate, Noah Palmer and Clarence Goodsonearned second team recognition.

After a dominating 2-1 victory overNC State in the first round of the ACCTournament, the Terps found them-selves again battling Virginia for thetitle. Maryland had faced the Cavs inall three of its previous finals appear-ances, getting the best of Virginia intwo of those contests. It looked likethe Terps were on their way to se-curing the championship after A.J.Herrera converted on a penaltykick, but Virginia countered on are-directed shot and tied the scoreat 1-1. Maryland, forced to playa man down for the last 35 min-utes after a red card, had somegreat scoring chances in regu-lation and both overtimes, butCav keeper Ryan Burke madespectacular saves to keep theTerrapins out of the back ofthe net. Burke continued hishot play in the shootout, and Virginia came away with the title, win-ning in penalty kicks 7-6.

Although disappointed, Maryland regrouped for the NCAATournament. Garey and Goodson’s goals led the Terps past OldDominion, and Garey again found the back of the net in 1-0 winover Akron.

In the NCAA Quarterfinals, though, Maryland would need tomuster all the courage, talent and poise it had on its roster to getpast Saint Louis. The Billikens shocked the Ludwig Field crowd aftertaking an early 2-0 lead, but the Terps roared back scoring fourgoals in just over 11 minutes to overwhelm Saint Louis, 4-2, andearn another trip to the College Cup. Nino Marcantonio scored agoal and had two assists to help ignite the Terrapin rally.

In the national semifinals against St. John’s, Maryland cameout sharp and determined, firing nine shots (including four on goal)in the first 11 minutes. The goal did not come, though, and a con-verted penalty kick by Sebastion Alvado-Ralph gave the Red Storma 1-0 lead. The Terps remained poised and dominated the flow ofplay in the second half, but could not get the break they needed toget the game’s equalizer despite great chances by Thompson andGarey. Maryland came out on the short side of the 1-0 decision.

“In games like this, you hope your team shows up and playsthe way they are capable of playing - like champions,” Cirovski saidfollowing the game. “Soccer is a strange, cruel game as we all know, and the ball didn’t bounce our way. I just told my team that I’ve justhad two of the best years of my coaching life. They are an incred-ible group of people that are champions in every aspect of life.”

Despite losing seven seniors who have helped lead the Mary-land program to new heights (65 wins in five seasons, two CollegeCup appearances and an ACC title), the pieces are still in place foranother great run in 2004.
