Academic Seminars9:30 am - 10:30 amWhat’s Next for the Supreme CourtMcCartan Courtroom, Eck Hall of LawPRESENTER: Richard Garnett, Paul J. Schierl/Fort Howard Corporation Professor of Law; Concurrent Professor of Political Science
With a new justice recently appointed, and more changes possibly on the horizon, what’s next for the Supreme Court? Join Professor Richard Garnett, former clerk for Supreme Court Justice William H. Rehnquist, as he discusses recent rulings and future cases.
Memory as We Grow Older Sponsored by the Notre Dame Senior AlumniJordan Auditorium, Mendoza College of BusinessPRESENTER: Joshua Koen, Assistant Professor of Psychology
Our brain and memory undergo changes as we grow older. Join Professor Joshua Koen to hear about the basic concepts and recent research on memory and aging, and learn facts and tips on what does (and doesn’t) aid memory later in life.
Understanding China as a World PowerMcKenna Hall AuditoriumPRESENTER: Lionel Jensen, Associate Professor of East Asian Languages & Cultures and History
Today the expansion of China is a source of global concern. Under the aegis of Chinese Communist Party’s leader, Xi Jinping, the once “peaceful rise” of China as a world economic power has taken a more confrontational turn. Why? These and other topics will be addressed and placed in proper context so that China may be understood rather than feared.
11:00 am - NoonMagic of the MindMcCartan Courtroom, Eck Hall of LawPRESENTER: James Brockmole ‘99, Professor of Psychology; Joseph and Elizabeth Robbie Collegiate Chair; Associate Dean for the Social Sciences
On stage, magicians use illusion, misdirection, and deception to create a fantasy of impossibility that audiences are willing to believe to be real. Using real-world examples and demonstrations, this talk explains why we are prone to see what isn’t there, miss what is right before our eyes, remember seeing things that didn’t happen, and nevertheless make it through a day of living unscathed.
A Pope on the Margins: Pope Francis’s Vision for the ChurchJordan Auditorium, Mendoza College of BusinessPRESENTER: J. Matthew Ashley, Associate Professor of Systematic Theology; Director, Master of Divinity
This lecture examines Francis’s pontificate by looking at how his experience as a Jesuit and as Archbishop in Argentina has shaped his vision of the Church as a principal sign and instrument of God’s mercy in the world, especially “on the margins.”
Technology & The Future of WorkCenter for Career Development, 5th Floor, Duncan Student CenterPRESENTER: Brett Beasley, Associate Director, Notre Dame Deloitte Center for Ethical Leadership
A decade ago, it seemed that only routine tasks could be automated. But machines and computers no longer simply weld widgets. Now they write articles, conduct complex financial analyses, and perform surgery, and it can make you wonder if any job is safe. In this session, we’ll consider a few visions of what the future of work might look like. Then we’ll step back from automation anxiety to consider why we work in the first place. Finally, participants will discover practical strategies to make work more meaningful in an era of automation.
ND Women Connect Event: Memories & Mimosas11:00 am - 12:30 pmMcKenna Hall Auditorium & Atrium
ND Women Connect invites you to socialize, share your memories, and be inspired at our alumnae cocktail reception followed by the launch of “In Her Own Words: Stories from the Early Years of Coeducation at Notre Dame.” Join us as we interview pioneering ND women graduates from the 1970’s and prepare for the milestone celebration of 50 years of coeducation at Notre Dame in 2022.

MORE WAYS TO STAY CONNECTED
Join your local club. Your local club is the access point in your community for camaraderie with your Notre Dame family.
Serve with fellow Domers. Wherever we gather—in local communities or at a Shamrock Series away game—join us to serve the needs of others.
Attend a UND Celebration. Each year, ND leaders travel to communities across the country to speak with local alumni and friends.
Leverage IrishCompass. Join the thousands of fellow alumni who are networking, mentoring, and finding job opportunities on the University's online professional community.
Learn with us online and on- and off-campus. From an online case study to our Hesburgh Lecture Series, continue your Notre Dame education.
Hike! Join us outside the Eck Visitors Center for Football Fridays on home football weekends to get ready for the big game.
Submit prayer requests. At faith.nd.edu, we accept your intentions to be prayed at the Grotto.
Cheer the Irish together at home and on the road. At each big game, we’ll be there to provide ways for the ND family to gather and cheer.
Support local students. Join the send-off events in your community as your local students leave for campus.
Pray with us daily. At faith.nd.edu, join the thousands of ND family members subscribed to receive a daily Gospel reflection.
Travel with friends. Each year, hundreds of ND alumni and friends travel the world together through our Travelin’ Irish programs.
