AUDITION PACKET 2017

Hello Prospective and Returning Members, Thank you for your interest in the ECU Drumline. The following packet contains a series of instructions and exercises outlining the requirements for the upcoming audition. Please read the document thoroughly to ensure a successful audition day. Our final “Day of Drumming” clinic will be held on July 29th from 10-5 p.m. (check-in at 9:00 a.m.) and we encourage everyone to come out. In the clinic we will explain everything you need to know for the audition process. This clinic is not a substitute for the information presented in the packet, nor your own personal practice, but it is specifically designed to help you have your best audition. The clinic is free, and drums/bass mallets will be provided.

AUDITION DAY The “Audition Day” (Friday, August 11th) has been designed to maximize flexibility for travel to campus and move-in for the dorms. In order to ensure that the auditions end on-time, please arrive as early as possible for the Pre-Season Band Camp Registration. (especially returning members)

Important Information

• Select an audition time slot immediately after Check-In* • All auditions will be held individually • There will be multiple auditions during each time slot • Once you have selected an audition time, you will have “free-time” to practice,

finish moving-in, or check-out your dorm. • After your audition you are “free” until results are posted at 9:00 p.m.

AUDITION PROCEDURE

In order for the audition process to run efficiently it is important that you understand the procedures for the audition. Each student may audition for two instruments in their audition. If you are auditioning for two instruments, you will perform your primary audition instrument first, and then your secondary instrument. You will perform each exercise/excerpt in the order established on the previous page.

Each exercise will be accompanied by a metronome at the specified tempos in the

audition music list. Every exercise will begin with an “8-and-in”/mark time/sticks up procedure. This is how we will begin every exercise rehearsal repetition this season. All audition music (except sight reading) will be marked-time to.

“8-and-In” Procedure

** the “8-and-in” process begins as soon as the metronome is turned on** Counts 1-4: “Set position”

• Heels together, • Toes spread (roughly a 45-degree angle at the heel) • Sticks down (hands by your side). • Chin slightly above flat, • Body weight slightly forward.

Counts 5 & 6: Begin “mark-time”

(the mark-time should be done in tempo with the metronome) • Heels stay together (feet will maintain 45-degree angle) • Count 5 should be on the Left foot • Count 6 should be on the Right foot. • mark-time throughout the entire exercise

Count 7: Move sticks to “playing position.”

Count 8: prep stick(s) for playing the exercise (Prep height will be based on the prescribed stick height for each exercise.)

After the “8-and-in” count-off, and the exercise has been played, perform the sticks-down procedure at the end of each audition excerpt. The sticks-down procedure is as follows in three counts:

1. play down beat of exercise, stop marking time (place last left foot) 2. rest/free count 3. sticks down (NOT STICKS IN!)

**After each audition excerpt/exercise, you will be given a short moment before beginning the next excerpt/exercise.**

SIGHT READING

Each instrument will have its own sight-reading excerpt. This is used as a way to assess both reading level and ability to learn music quickly, skills that are frequently required with the ECU drumline. The process for the sight-reading portion of the audition will be as follows:

• The excerpt will be passed out • The metronome will be turned on • You will be given 20 seconds to look over the piece • You will be asked to play the piece

*”8-and-In”/sticks down procedures will not apply* After sight-reading, you can move on to your secondary instrument, otherwise you are free until 9:00 PM when results are announced.
