Welcome to Kelley Chapel,
We gather in this worship place once again to celebrate our rich
legacy of 116 years of service. Thanks to all of the past pastors for
their leadership, members gone on to glory for leaving a legacy, and
active members for your faithfulness. Kelley Chapel could not have
come this far without the commitment of so many. It takes a team to
make the dream work. And indeed, we have become an unmatchless,
magnificent team.
I want to also thank everybody who prepared for this day, who
planned, copied bulletins, cooked, sang, and served in various
ministries to make our 116th Church Anniversary a day that we will
never forget. Enclosed in this program are our values, mission, and
vision statement, which we devised during our retreat. Please be sure
to read it to remind you of what we planned to accomplish in the
days to come.
Furthermore, I want to thank God from whom all blessings flow for
the work he has done through us this past year: feeding the hungry,
clothing the naked, and making disciples of Jesus Christ for the
transformation of the world. Yes, many lives have come to know the
love of Jesus because of Kelley Chapel's ministries, especially in the
greater Decatur area.
I want to welcome Rev. Hayes Gainey for agreeing to be our preacher
for today. He left behind a congregation that loves him, and a
ministry that is fruitful. We have been waiting and praying for your
safe arrival, and we are excited to hear what the Lord has to say to us
through you.
Finally, I want to welcome those who are worshipping with us today.
We would love for you to become members of this church. We would
love to be your church family. So, after the Word is preached, we will
open the doors of the church; please come down the aisle—and join
us.
.

2014 Celebration Report Bettye B. Johnson, Administrator Board Chair
As the hands and feet of Jesus, as the body of Christ, God is counting on us to be the salt and light of the
earth. Scripture tells us that a town built on a hill cannot be hidden, but like a lamp, is put on a stand to
give light to everyone in the house. Kelley Chapel, as a church standing atop a hill, has made great strides
to let our light shine to everyone in the community for 115 years. Under the guidance and vision of our
Pastor, Dr. Derrick R. Rhodes, for the past eight years, we as a church have set several goals and each year
we have accomplished them. By the grace of God, this year has been no different and we continue to
thrive and succeed in accomplishing our goals of this year.
Our overarching goal has long been to enlarge and multiply spiritually and numerically, to love God with
our whole heart, mind, and strength, to love our neighbor as ourselves, to grow in missions, all while
working towards making disciples for Jesus Christ. We know that this pleases God.
We have been blessed at Kelley Chapel to have several ministries that all work to accomplish these goals
in multiple ways. The Recreational ministry as well as Girl and Boy Scouts continue to lead the way in
reaching new and perspective members to the church within the community. In addition to reaching
potential members, the Media Ministry persists in spreading the gospel to members that are sick and shut-
in, and/or out of the area tending to other needs.
Mission work through the United Methodist Women, United Methodist Men in addition to the Clothing
Closet, and Food Pantry remains one of the fruitful ways to enlarge our territory for touching and
changing lives in this community. Our Senior Ministry has embraced and reaches across generations
through noonday Bible Study and fellowship with lunch, card-making classes, quilting and sewing classes,
and dance class. Our Trustees consistently work to maintain, repair, and renew our properties, this House
of God. Still, not restricting ourselves to just ministries, the entire church body enjoys and benefits in
learning and studying God’s word through Bible Study and Sunday school, Children’s Church, and a
growing Nursery. This is done with the help of parents, leaders, and the ministers.
One of the more noteworthy aspects of our accomplishments this year is that we are actively in the
process for Kelley Chapel an ever-growing place of worship, something that will take more than a year to
develop, but is already in its operating stages. This year, our Church took its first retreat in ten years! The
fruits of this effort produced an important Strategic Plan for spiritual growth, numerical growth,
evangelism. We thank God for the leadership in this effort and what it has sprung forth.
With this in mind, not only do we celebrate the accomplishments of this past year, but we praise God in
advance for the accomplishments of the coming year as well. As we work to succeed in doing these things,
we do not do it to bring glory to ourselves, but out of obedience and honor to God. For we know that the
religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is to look after orphans and widows in their
distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. Furthermore, as Paul said to the
Corinthians, we are thankful that God continues to use us to spread the aroma of the knowledge of him
everywhere. This is at the core of every goal we set for our church. We are proud of what we have done,
but as we celebrate, let us also give these accomplishments as our sacrifice of praise to God, a fragrant
offering that might be pleasing to God. Amen.

Our Vision Our Strategic Plan
2014-2019
“So let us not grow weary in doing what is right;
for we reap at harvest time, if we do not give up”. Gal 6:9
After extensive interaction and discussion among church leaders and members during the 2014
spring church retreat at Epworth by the Sea on St. Simons Island, the framework for our Strategic
Plan 2014-2019 was developed. The framework for the plan was based on our mission, vision,
and values statement, setting the stage for the development of our four church goals, which focus
on Evangelism, Congregational Action to Reach Everyone (CARE), and Facilities. The Strategic
Plan is centered on our goals (three short-term and one long-term) as listed below:
1. To increase the attendance of members in worship service and spiritual growth
opportunities by 20 percent (June 2016)
2. To increase new member membership by 20 percent (June 2016)
3. To improve and enhance the number of people reached through community service
and to provide a greater awareness of CARE ministries utilizing various modes of
communication by 20 percent (June 2016)
4. To improve all facilities by developing a priority list, schedule, campaign plan and
budget for all facilities, and budget for each facility (June 2019)
All ministries were asked to develop a minimum of one action step to support each of the four
goals. The action steps submitted from ministries were complied and make up the completed
plan of action for our Strategic Plan. Many ministries have already begun implementing specific
action steps to support the plan. The Strategic Plan will be monitored throughout the year to help
ensure that we meet our goals by the time line designated. Updates will be provided annually and
upon request.
We have faith that the implementation of our Strategic Plan will help us in our efforts to make
disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.
Dr. Patti C. Reed, Strategic Plan Chairperson
Min. Genetha Rice-Singleton, Strategic Plan Vice Chairperson

This ministry goes beyond filling in for the pastor or speaking in public. Lay Speaking Ministries offer many options for serving
in roles other than the traditional pulpit supply. Teaching, serving, training, leading, participating, caring, loving, and
communicating are now integral parts of Lay Servant Ministries. With so many avenues of training, Lay Servant Ministries offer
valuable education equipping United Methodists for all facets of lay ministry. Kelley Chapel has 23 lay servants the most in the

1st Anniversary of the Entrance Into the Newly Renovated Sanctuary
Kelley Chapel United Methodist Church, build in 1898, "A 2009, 2012 and 2013 “Church of
Excellence” and a top 100 United Methodist Church nationally, has stood proudly for 116 years
on the corner of Kelley Chapel Road and Flats Shoals Parkway. The church shines brightly, as a
beacon, in the community of Decatur, Georgia.
On May 26, 2013, we entered into the newly renovated church for the re-consecration service of
the church sanctuary. That was a very special day for our church family. We sang "The Church's
One Foundation" as we marched.
We witnessed the realities of many years of dreams and celebrated the joy of the preparation,
planning and prayer. As a church family, we gratefully offered our new worship center to the
glory of God and for service to our members, guests, family, and friends.
We thank each of you for your many personal and willing sacrifices of time, talent, and special
donations to make this dream a reality. As we entered into this building, we prayed that we will
always use it for worship, preaching, and teaching in the name of Jesus Christ. We entered our
worship center and we offered the sanctuary as a safe place for the comfort of those who mourn,
for the strength of those who are preserving family values, and for the giving of hope and courage
to all.
