FROM THE SENIOR PASTOR Rev. The second man spoke up, “Remember that you were created in God’s image. The position in which to pray is to stand, looking into the heavens, talking to God as a child to their parent.” The last man scratched his head. “I don’t know much about those positions, but the finest praying I ever did was upside down in a well.” The story speaks a funny and sad truth: sometimes the times of earnest prayer are prompted by some crisis in our lives. Obviously, those are good times to pray. But consider—if we only spoke to our family or friends when there was trouble, it wouldn’t say much for our relationship. In this new year, I invite you to carve out a little time—kneeling, standing, sitting, hanging upside down, it doesn’t much matter—but find a little time for conversation with the One who spoke the galaxies into being, the One who knows us better than we know ourselves. See you Sunday, P.S. Our sermons on the Sermon on the Mount begin this week. Hope you'll join us! “Bread, Bath and Way Beyond” is a new series of sermons for the new year. It began with a communion service (Bread) on the first Sunday of 2014, then on the second Sunday we celebrated the Baptism of the Lord, remembering Jesus’ baptism (Bath) and renewing our own. It's now time to go "Way Beyond" in the weeks to come, as we study Jesus’ teachings in the Sermon on the Mount. Some of Jesus’ most challenging words are found in chapters 5-7 of Matthew’s gospel, going beyond--way beyond--the conventional religious wisdom of his day…and ours. Plan to be in worship each week for some spiritual food and challenging words for your spiritual nurture as we begin a new year in our life as Christian disciples. SERIES CONTINUES IN TRADITIONAL SERVICES This Sunday, January 19 from 5-7, all youth in grades 6-12 are invited to our first Instagram photo scavenger hunt! In- stagram is a popular social media app for your smart phone. It allows its users to upload artistically rendered pictures for their friends to see. Students will work as teams to find a list of items around our area and take pictures as proof. Using Instagram instead of a traditional camera will give us the ability to watch the hunt unfold online and hundreds of our friends will be able to see how much fun we are having. Hopefully some of these friends will want to hang out with us next time! We also want to teach our students how to responsibly use social media networks and show how to create quality posts and community through them. No Instagram? No problem. Each team for the scaven- ger hunt will have an iPhone, and each member of the team will have an equal amount of time being the "photographer." After our hunt we will be spending the night at the church for a free lock-in. All youth are invited to stay until 10 on Monday morning for games, snacks, and all kinds of adventure. Come back on Sunday, January 26 from 5-7 as we host our Spring kickoff event called the Instagrammys. We will be hand- ing out awards red carpet style for the students' artistic contributions through the Instagram scavenger hunt. All stu- dents and their families are invited. F R O M T H E S E N I O R P A S T O RRev. Ken Irby

january 16, 2014

Three neighbors were visiting over the fence one day, and some-how the conversation turned to the proper way to pray.

“You should be on your knees, with your head humbly bowed to Almighty God,” one offered.

The second man spoke up, “Remember that you were created in God’s image. The position in which to pray is to stand, looking into the heavens, talking to God as a child to their parent.”

The last man scratched his head. “I don’t know much about those positions, but the finest praying I ever did was upside down in a well.”

The story speaks a funny and sad truth: sometimes the times of earnest prayer are prompted by some crisis in our lives.

See you Sunday,

Plan to be in worship each week for some spiritual food and challenging words for your spiritual nur ture as we begin a new year in our life as Christian disciples.

Hopefully some of these friends will want to hang out with us next time! We also want to teach our students how to responsibly use social media networks and show how to create quality posts and community through them. No Instagram? No problem. DVDs Needed for New Children's TVWe have installed a great new TV and DVD player in the Chil-dren's Library, but we are in need of DVDs! Please consider donating age-appropriate DVDs for toddlers and pre-school children to watch during the several activities that take place in this room. You may drop off donations at the Reception Desk.

Dallas Spring Break TripSpring Break is fast approaching and we are excited about our trip to the Great Wolf Lodge in Dallas, TX! A trip like this can make memories that last a lifetime for students, and we are sure to grow closer together as a family. You can be a par t of this life changing event by being a sponsor. Your donation could help pay for a student's trip, cover the cost of a meal for the group, or help us out with transport fees. We would greatly ap-preciate any support you can offer. We have a couple of spots still available for youth to attend this trip, so email Brandon at [email protected] ASAP if you're interested.

High School Small GroupBeginning Wednesday, February 5th from 6:00-7:30 pm, all high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors are invited to Brandon and Katie's house for a weekly small group study. We'll spend time discovering our strengths, weaknesses, and elements of our personalities in preparation for choosing and successfully attending a college. We will also be learning how we can better live in community by understanding the personalities of our friends and families. This small group will run through February and March. Of course there will be snacks! Email Brandon if you want your student to be signed up for the group.

Kids Hope had a wonderful first semes-ter at Arthur Circle Elementary School. We currently have 23 students, and they and their mentors celebrated the Christmas season with a par ty in Decem-ber. I want to especially thank Carolyn Clark and her Altrusa Club for providing cookies, lots of little stocking stuffers, and pictures of the children in Santa's lap that they framed and gave to the children. Debbie Noone did a fabulous job of organizing the crafts that children made. Thanks go to our planning com-mittee, Debbie Noone, Khaki Simank, and Jennifer Powers, along with many who provided refreshments, and our Kids Hope Angels who helped us to fund this event. I also want to thank our many Kids Hope volunteers--not only our Mentors, but also our Prayer Par tners, Substitutes, Teacher Encouragers, Fantas-tic First Friday Friends, Library Helpers, and Kids Hope Angels. Kids Hope is still looking for anyone who might be interested in joining us in this unique par tnership with Arthur Circle. We welcome anyone who wants to be

a par t of this wonderful ministry at our church. Positions of service include:

Mentor: 45 minutes per week, giving one-on-one time to a student, not only educationally, but also as a role model, friend, and encourager. Men are espe-cially needed!

Substitute: fill in for mentors when they are ill or out of town

Prayer Partner Coordinator: coordinate the prayer par tners and mentors to work together on their child

Prayer Partners for new mentors

Teacher Encourager: provide small gifts and notes to encourage a teacher once a month

First Friday Friend: provide snacks for teachers monthly (on a rotational basis)

Library Helper: assist in school library sor t-ing and restacking books once a week

Contact Jan Bookter at 632.5874 or [email protected] if you are interested in getting involved with Kids Hope.

An Update and Word of Thanks from Kids Hope Director Jan Bookter

New Spiritual Formation Pathway GroupTara Brawley will lead a new Spiritual Formation Pathway Group for young moms beginning Monday, January 27th from 6-7 in the meeting room. For more information contact Rev. Kathy Wafer at [email protected].

Experiencing Pathways to Prayer RetreatOur second Spiritual Formation Retreat, Experiencing Prayer, will be held Saturday, February 8, from 9am-Noon. Registra-tion fee is $10. Come and enter a time set aside to explore ways of engaging with God in prayer through scripture, ar t, journaling, movement, music, silence, and finding new meaning in ancient words.

Beth Moore StudyIt's not too late to join! Explore the fasci-nating account of the building of the Old Testament tabernacle, the significance of its design, its pivotal role in God's eternal plan, the grand fulfillment of its purpose by Jesus Christ, and its variety of mean-ings for your walk with God today. You will be challenged to prepare your hear t, like the holy of holies, to become a home for God’s love and glory — a dwell-ing place for the Most High God. This women's study led by Rev. Kathy Wafer meets on Tuesdays from 12:30-2:00 pm OR Wednesdays from 6:00-7:30 pm in the meeting room. The book is $16, which you may purchase at the study.

The Wesleyan Covenant PrayerI am no longer my own, but thine.Put me to what thou wilt, rank me with whom thou wilt.Put me to doing, put me to suffering.Let me be employed by thee or laid aside for thee,Exalted for thee or brought low for thee.Let me be full, let me be empty.Let me have all things, let me have nothing.I freely and hear tily yield all thingsto thy pleasure and disposal. And now, O glorious and blessed God,Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,Thou ar t mine, and I am thine. So be it.And the covenant which I have made on ear th, Let it be ratified in heaven. Amen.

BE A P.A.L. AND PROVIDE ANOTHER LOVEJESUS SAID:“Let me give you a new command: Love one another. In the same way I loved you, you love one another. This is how everyone will recognize that you are my disciples –When they see the love you have for each other.”John 13:34-35, The Message

The focus of being a P.A.L. is to respond to the care and needs of our members who are living in assisted living facilities, skilled care facilities, and are homebound. It's so important to keep the connection with church members who are no lon-ger able to come to services. If they can no longer come to the church, it is our responsibility to take the church to them! This is how we become the hands, feet, and hear t of Christ. Once a month you would call, visit, and send your PAL a card or small gift, such as a plant, baked good, or child's drawing. Sunday School classes and families can also be PALS. Help us keep members of our community from feeling forgotten. For more information about being a P.A.L. contact Rev. Kathy Wafer.
