CHRISTIAN FORMATION Nancy Brinkac: [email protected]

NO CF Jan. 20 (school holiday). Classes Resume Jan. 27 DID YOU KNOW? from The Great Adventure Bible Timeline series: In the 8th period of salvation history, despite consistent warnings from the prophets, both the Northern and Southern kingdom repeatedly turn from God. Punishment inevitably comes in the form of exile (the name for this period). Israel (the Northern kingdom) falls to Assyria in 722 B.C. The people are deported and scattered among the countries to the north. Judah (the Southern kingdom) hangs on a bit longer, perhaps because God continued to be worshipped in the Jerusalem temple located in the South, where David's royal line maintained its position on the royal throne. For the sake of His promise to David,God continued to "maintain a lamp" in Jerusalem. However, the people did not always obey and were eventually marched into Babylonian exile in 587 B.C. Jerusalem and the Temple are destroyed. The period ends with all that is left of the old Israel - the tribe of Judah - waiting out seventy years in captivity far from home.

SECULAR FRANCISCAN ORDER: Is Christ calling you to walk in the footsteps of St Francis of Assisi? If you are interested in learning more about Franciscan spirituality, or possibly find yourself discerning a call to the Secular Franciscan Order, please visit us. All are welcome! We meet in Room 8 at Incarnation on the first Sat. of each month from 12:15-2:30pm. See PeaceandAllGood.org to learn more, or contact Carl Stacy, OFS at (434) 326-4492. SECULAR ORDER OF DISCALCED CARMELITE Community of Blessed Elizabeth of the Trinity meets at St. Francis Church in Staunton on the 2nd Sunday of each month from 11:30am-4:00pm. If you are interested in learning more or if you feel called to a Carmelite way of life, please pick up a brochure on the Programs bulletin board.

… just as Christ was sent by the Father so also He sent the apostles, filled with the Holy Spirit. This he did so that they might preach the Gospel to every creature and proclaim that the Son of God by His death and resurrection had freed us from the power of Satan and from death, and brought us into the Kingdom of His Father. YOUTH MINISTRY Patrick Drury: [email protected]

SUNDAY DINNER COORDINATOR NEEDED: Youth ministry is looking for someone to help coordinate our weekly Sunday dinners before our middle and high school youth group

meetings. Weekly time commitment is very manageable, and most work can be done from your phone or e-mail. Tasks include touching base in advance with the families who are signed up to provide the meal each Sunday and communicating with the Youth Minister when any issues arise. You would be able to transition this semester with our current meal coordinator to learn the ropes and see how the process works. If you are interested or if you have any questions, please contact Patrick.

The flowers adorning the altar this weekend are offered to the glory of

God and in honor of Pat & Patsy Abell

USCCB Department Director to Talk at Incarnation: On Sunday, January 27, we will welcome Dr. Steve Colecchi, Director of the Office of International Justice and Peace at the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, to Incarnation to speak about the churchʼs teachings on war and peace throughout history and today, especially as a way of

processing our recent hosting of the “Eyes Wide Open” exhibit at Incarnation in November. We hope this will be a chance for learning, opening a dialogue, and connecting our faith to the presence of war and conflict in our world and how we might understand these issues. Please plan to join us in the PAC/Stone Chapel at 10:15am, immediately after the 9:00am Mass, for this adult faith formation opportunity. ART SHOW FOR HAITI: On Fri., Jan. 25, Incarnation will host an art show and evening of wine and cheese to highlight the talent of artists within our parish and to raise money for justice and charity ministries. Twenty-five percent of all sales and 100% of all admission donations from the show will go to these ministries. SAVE the date on your calendar and plan to join us! For now, though, we are in the process of planning and are looking for artists--painters, sculptors, photographers, etc.--and authors who are willing to read their work who would like to join the show. Please contact Tom Craig (293.5679) for details or to let us know youʼd like to be a part of this! CATHOLIC ADVOCACY DAY: With the upcoming start of the legislative session in Richmond comes Catholic Advocacy Day on

Thursday, January 31—a chance for Virginiaʼs Catholics to come together and voice our opinions about proposed state legislation that relates to issues such as health and social concerns, immigration, respect for all life, Catholic education, and family life. Participants will be able to meet with their senators and state delegates, and, though anyone is welcome to talk, each meeting will be led by a spokesperson who presents the issues and asks for the legislatorʼs support before hearing his/her position on it (so there is no need to be nervous or to feel “not qualified

enough”). Again this year, the Virginia Catholic Conference is chartering a bus from Charlottesville. See the bulletin board in the Narthex for details; registration is available online at vacatholic.org or by mailing a registration form from the bulletin board. The $10 registration fee covers morning refreshments, lunch, bus transport, and materials. Contact Mike Brinkac ([email protected]) with questions and/or to let us know that youʼll be joining us so we can keep track of the bus list. IMPACT UPDATE Last week, we gave you the update about the ongoing jobs/youth unemployment campaign and the proposed first-rung healthcare collaborative. IMPACT is engaged in a second campaign on homelessness; research began in December on this issue. So far, the team has met with PACEM, OK Collaborative, TJACH/The Haven, Region Ten PATH, and Region Ten Dual Recovery Center. We have learned that the number of homeless or unstably housed children in our community has been rising. The chronically homeless account for 35% of greater Charlottesvilleʼs homeless population, while the national average is 25%. The January 2012 Point-in-Time survey estimated 232 homeless adults. This year over 450 children have been identified through the local school systems to be homeless. As progress toward a solution is made, weʼll keep you up-to-date in the weeks to come. GREEN TEAM REMINDER: As a reminder, Incarnation and our parish Green Team are committed to both recycling and composting and encourage you to participate as well. Guides for what can and cannot be recycled and composted are available on the Green Team bulletin board in the hallway or on the Green Team page of the website. Recycling items can be placed in the large orange dumpster at the back of the parking lot; the compost bins (which will help to fertilize our garden this spring) are at the back of the grassy area to the right of the church. Thanks for your commitment to caring for Godʼs creation in these two ways! PARISHIONERS IN NEED OF RIDES: A parishioner generally has a ride to the 4:30pm Mass but occasionally needs someone to fill in when her ride is out of town or busy. If you have questions or can help this parishioner to attend Mass with our community, please contact Kristen. HABITAT BUILD DAY: Weʼre grateful to everyone who has helped with our Habitat for Humanity sponsorship thus far! We have three dates remaining: 2/16, 3/16, and 4/20. Being a part of a construction crew requires no experience (training is provided) and is a lot of fun! Please look for the sign-up sheets in the Narthex. PREGNANCY CENTER HELP NEEDED: Do you have a special sensitivity for a woman or teen in an unplanned pregnancy situation? Have you wanted to be Godʼs hope and love to the hurting? Every day, there are those who walk into the Pregnancy Centers facing one of the scariest moments of their lives. They need a caring listener who can help them to sort out their situation. We are beginning a winter counselor training class. To learn more or to sign up, call Pat at 817.4554. You will be blessed as you serve others!

PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY The Health Ministry has started a "Prayer Shawl Ministry". The shawl serves as a mantle and sign of God's healing presence to strengthen someone who is weary, to ease their suffering and to comfort them when in pain or when they feel alone. The shawls are made with love by parishioners. Prayer shawls are available in the Parish Office. There is no cost for the shawl. Donations are accepted.
