LETTER FROM OUR PASTOR Rev. Patrick G. Cecil THE TOUCH OF JESUS

It is hard for us to imagine what it was like for the people of Jesus’ day who suffered from leprosy. As it says in the book of Leviticas, a person with leprosy had to “dwell apart” from

the community and declare themselves “unclean.” Not to mention that survival many times depended on being supported by others in your community, leprosy must have seemed like a slow motion death sentence.

In today’s Gospel, this leper must have been so starved for human contact that he did the unthinkable and moved toward Jesus instead of keeping his distance. We can imagine that the touch of Jesus’ hand was as important as the words he spoke. “I do will it. Be made clean.” Jesus certainly could have healed him without that touch, but that touch was a human thing to do. Jesus humanized his faith and his ministry. He lived in the thick of human life, where people live their lives.

I think Jesus’ behavior in this story gives us an insight into his understanding of God. Jesus did not think of God as far away, or restricted to heaven. For Jesus, God was here and now. God was in the beauty of the lilies of the field and in the penitence of the tax collector at the rear of the temple. God was present in the children he embraced and blessed and in the people he forgave as he hung upon the cross at Calvary. For us as humans and as Christians, we cannot close God out of anything. Seeking and finding God in our day to day lives can enrich us immensely. This is how God is continually revealed in our lives; this is how we make religion a part of our lives.

This week we will begin the season of Lent. There will be many opportunities to discover God’s presence in our day to day lives. As always, we will have our Parish Mission to begin Lent. This will be on Monday and Tuesday, February 23rd and 24th at 7:30 pm. The mission will be given by Dr. Carole Eipers and the title is “Who do you say that I am?” Dr. Eipers will speak to us at all the masses next weekend.

Also this Lent we will have a week to week retreat through scripture and the Ignatius Spiritual Exercises. We will be led by Father Aidan O’Boyle and Mr. Jim Sweany. There is an informative evening this Tuesday, Feb-ruary 17th at 7 pm. The six retreat sessions will begin on March 3rd and continue through April 7 from 7—8:30 pm in the Parish Hall.

In addition, on the Friday evenings of Lent we will celebrate a simple parish meal of soup, salad and bread at 6 pm which will be followed at 7 pm with Stations of the Cross in Church. It is an opportunity to gather as a parish family for fellowship and prayer as we follow Jesus to Calvary.

Remember as well that we will have opportunities for Reconciliation every Saturday at 3:30—4:15 pm as well as our Communal Celebration of Reconciliation on Tuesday, March 24 at 10:30 am and 7:30 pm and on Mon-day March 30th at 7:30 pm

May God walk with you and your family this Lent.

Peace, Father Pat Cecil

5th Commandment: Thou shalt not kill (Exodus 20:13)

It would be easy to gloss over this commandment, saying “Well, I certainly am not about to kill anyone!” Hopefully that’s true, but this is an excellent opportunity to consider the “DO’s” instead of the “DON”T. Abortion is certainly an issue that falls into this category. Perhaps a positive DO would include support – time, talent or treasure – for the anti abortion programs. Our parish baby bottle drive to aid needy young mothers could also be included as a positive gesture. And on a less intense level, any kindness or gesture that makes someone else’s life a bit better would also be a DO. Tip for this week: Take one positive action that brings joy to a life.

BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT

Your loved one has died, your life has changed, and IT HURTS!!! You may wonder if you'll ever feel good again. Can your life ever have meaning and purpose again. You will never be the same person you were before your loved one died, but sometime in the near future, you will be able to resume a fulfilling life.

If you wonder how, please come to the Bereavement Support Group meeting on Saturday, February 21st, at 8:30 am in Jubilee House, located at 7045 N. Moselle Ave. (two houses north of the Rectory). You will have the opportunity to be with others who are facing these difficult moments in their lives.

"Jesus is passing by," they told the blind beggar sitting by the roadside. And we know that he cried out, met the Lord, and was healed.

Jesus is still passing by. Every day he passes by. Let's not miss him.

Join us in praying the mysteries of Christ's life and mission. Meet Him personally through the Scriptures and in your daily life, using the Ignatian Spiritual Exercises. Written by St. Ignatius of Loyola while still a layperson, these "spiritual exercises" are an authentic and powerful lay spirituality. Originally given over 30 days in silence, our adaptation allows a person to integrate the fruits of one's daily prayer into the ongoing flow of one's day to day experiences.

Retreat Activities:

• Weekly sharing and support sessions • Daily individual prayer periods • Brief presentation on the spiritual exercises at each session • Methods of prayer taught and scriptures for daily reflections provided • Daily journaling

CARE & CONCERN & ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL

2015 ARCHDIOCESAN ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL BEGINS “Entrusted with Responsibility”

Please spend some time this week reflecting on the Annual Catholic Appeal brochure that you received with your bulle-tin. Please remember that it is much different than a one-time special collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a gift payable in installments.

As you review the work enabled by your contribution, please reflect on God’s gifts to you. He has given you all that you have. With these gifts, you are entrusted with responsibility. Your gifts to our parish, to the Archdiocese and to the work of the Church throughout the world should be given in gratitude for the continuing gifts that God gives you.

Each pledge makes a difference because all parish participate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable our Archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and services. Our combined gifts not only signify our gratitude to God, they fund a significant portion of the work of our Archdiocese.

After our parish goal of $52,234 is reached in cash, 100% of any additional funds come back to our parish to help to fund our needs.

If you received your pledge form in the mail, please complete it and mail it back or bring it to Mass next weekend. For those of you that did not receive a mailing or have not had time to respond to it, we will conduct our in-pew pledge process at all Masses this weekend.

FAITHDIRECT REPORTS THAT 9 DONORS STILL NEED TO UPDATE THEIR

ACCOUNT INFORMATION!

In the last two months the Parish suffered the loss of over $4000 in donations due to account suspensions. The most common fix for the problem is updating credit card informa-tion. FaithDirect notifies donors of this. Please respond if you are contacted by FaithDirect regarding updating suspended account information.

There is a catch-up feature that permits donors to take care of planned donations that failed to clear, simply by using this feature. Please consider supporting St. Mary of the Woods with electronic donations through FaithDirect.

As Catholics, we are not to focus only on ourselves but are called by our Baptism to reach out and

share our time, talent and treasure with our brothers and sisters. “But let our people, too, learn to devote themselves to good works, to supply urgent needs, so that they may not be unproductive.” (Titus 3:14)

We don’t give because we have a lot and can afford it; we give because of a desire to share what we have with others. St. Paul is often misquoted as saying, “Money is the root of all evil.” He said no such thing. Money helps feed the

hungry, helps clothe the naked; it helps build homeless shelters, schools and churches.

Consider enrolling in FaithDirect as a means of consistent giving. Electronic giving through Faith Direct is based on the stewardship model of sacrificial giving in which we place God First. It is not just a financial transaction, but an entire program that enhances stewardship principles. By participating in this programmed giving, you are able to donate to the parish consistently and we are better able to budget, knowing in advance the funds that will be available on a regular basis. Consider your many blessings and pray about what level of giving would be appropriate for your circumstance. I’d like to recommend the Faith Direct program to you. You may visit the FaithDirect website at www.faithdirect.net or call their toll-free number 866-507-8757 for more information. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you ALL! Just a side note; that this week’s collection shows the fragile nature of “in-pew” envelope collections. Only 129 envelopes were collected—ABOUT 11% OF THE TOTAL SENT FOR EVERY MONTH. THIS IS A LOT LESS THAN THE AVERAGE NUMBER OF 205 AND THE DONATIONS REALLY SUFFERED. We hope these missing envelopes will make an effort to get into a collection later, but experience says that many will not. ELECTRONIC DONATIONS ARE NOT EFFECTED BY WEATHER, SUPER BOWLS AND OTHER DISTRACTIONS. PLEASE CONSIDER ENROLLING IN FAITHDIRECT

Religious Education Corner Confirmation is fast approaching. Sunday, we were busy beginning our Interview process of each student to discover why they wanted to be Confirmed and what they understood would be hap-pening during this sacramental experience. We continue highlighting our outstanding staff. This week, we share some in-teresting details about one of our fourth grade teachers, Lesa Friedrich

Lesa is one of our new 4th grade Religious Educa-tion teachers and has been a SMOW parish member for the past 10 years along her husband Dave and her two children. Prior to coming to the Chicago area, she served as a choir member, cantor, and youth leader in her hometown of Highland, Illinois. Teaching is in Lesa’s blood for she has been a high school math teacher for the past 25 years and is cur-rently the Activities Director at Highland Park High School. Her weekends are filled with watching her children participate in soccer, baseball, basketball, dance, and gymnastics. When asked why she wanted to teach Religious Educa-tion, she said, “Many of my fondest memories are from watching my parents serve the church in multiple roles. My mom was the church secretary for over 30 years. I would like for my children to have the same experi-ence.” Lesa did her Undergraduate work at Millikin Univer-sity, where she received a B.S. in Mathematics. Her Graduate work was at National-Louis University get-ting a Degree in Educational Leadership. Lesa’s hob-bies include Cooking, Gardening, and Bicycle Riding. We are very blessed to have Lesa among us. God bless,

Marcy Mahoney

St. Mary of the Woods School Gives Back:

The Catholic Schools Week theme this year was entitled Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge, and Service. During the month of January, the St. Mary of the Woods School com-munity truly demonstrated their commitment to service through their generous donation to the Mercy Home for Boys and Girls and through their cold winter drive. We were able to collect 253 items including: hats, coats, sweaters, gloves, snow pants, scarves, and boots. We were also able to raise over $340 for our friends at Mercy Home for Boys and Girls. Giving back to those in need happens not only during Catholic Schools Week, but throughout the year. If you would like to learn more about how our school gives back to the community, please contact the school office at 773-763-7577. God Bless, Mary Yamoah

CARE AND CONCERN

WOMENS’ SPIRITUAL SPA DAY – FEBRUARY 26,2015 Author, poet and PBS-TV journalist Judith Valente offers practi-cal guidance on deflecting our many daily demands and living more mindfully as she presents “How to Live a Contemplative Life in a 24/7 World – Pausing as Prayer .”She will talk about practices that we can easily apply to our everyday lives to de-crease our stress, give us more balance and increase our gratitude for the lives we have. Judith has worked as a staff writer for The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal and was twice a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in journalism. She is currently an on air corre-spondent for PBS-TV’s “Religion and Ethics Newsweekly” and senior correspondent and producer for NPR affiliate WGLT Radio. She has authored two collections of poetry, and a mem-oir about her visits to the Mount St. Scholastica Monastery in Atchison, Kansas titled Atchison Blue: A Search for Si-lence, a Spiritual Home and a Living Faith , named in the top three best spirituality books of 2014 by the Religion Newswriter’s Association .

Lenten Regulations (from February 18, 2015, Ash Wednesday, to the Paschal Triduum) Abstinence from meat is to be observed by all Catholics 14 years old and older on Ash Wednesday and on all the Fridays of Lent. Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednes-day by all Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 59. Those who are bound by this may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one‘s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. The special Paschal fast, as well as abstinence, are prescribed for Good Friday and encouraged for Holy Satur-day

“Lent is ordered to preparing for the celebration of Easter, since the Lenten liturgy prepares for celebration of the Paschal Mys-tery both catechumens, by the various stages of Christian Initia-tion, and the faithful, who recall their own Baptism and do penance. (Universal Norms on the Liturgical Year, #27)

By the threefold discipline of fasting, almsgiving and prayer the church keeps Lent from Ash Wednesday until the evening of Holy Thursday. All of the faithful and the catechumens should undertake the serious practice of these three traditions. Failure to observe penitential days totally or a substantial number of such days must be considered serious.

“(On) weekdays of Lent, we strongly recommend participation in daily Mass and self-imposed observances of fasting. In light of grave human needs which weigh on the Christian conscience in all seasons, we urge particularly during Lent, generosity to local, national and world programs of sharing of all things needed to translate our duty to penance into a means of imple-menting the right of the poor to their part of our abun-dance.” (U.S. Bishops statement on penitential observances, 1966.)

CARE & CONCERN

SAVE THE DATE PREVENT CHILD ABUSE PRAYER SERVICE

at the Healing Garden located at Holy Family Parish

(1080 West Roosevelt Road, Chicago) Friday, April 17, 2015 – 10:30 a.m.

The Office of Assistance Ministry and the Safe Environment Office, along with the Heal-ing Garden Committee invite members of schools and parishes to join us for a Prevent Child Abuseprayer service at the Healing Garden. One of the highlights of the service will include planting the pinwheels for prevention. This symbolic gesture is designed to show the public in a very dramatic way that child abuse and neglect happen in every community and encourages each of us to focus on prevention as a part of an overall plan to break the cycle of abuse. For more information, contact either: Sean Magwire at [email protected]
