The gift of discernment has become all the more necessary today, since contemporary life offers immense possibilities for action and distraction, and the world presents all of them as valid and good. All of us, but especially the young, are immersed in a

culture of zapping. We can navigate simultaneously on two or more screens and interact at the same time with two or three virtual scenarios. Without the wisdom of

discernment, we can easily become prey to every passing trend.

Hoy día, el hábito del discernimiento se ha vuelto particularmente necesario. Porque

la vida actual ofrece enormes posibilidades de acción y de distracción, y el mundo las presenta como si fueran todas válidas y buenas. Todos, pero especialmente los jóvenes, están expuestos a un zapping

constante. Es posible navegar en dos o tres pantallas simultáneamente e interactuar al

mismo tiempo en diferentes escenarios virtuales. Sin la sabiduría del

discernimiento podemos convertirnos fácilmente en marionetas a merced de las

tendencias del momento.

This weekend we welcome Deacon David Rosenthal to our parish family.

We are blessed to have three deacons serving at St. Philips: Deacon Mike Blome, Deacon Joe Kuzio,

and now Deacon David Rosenthal. The deacons have told me that many people call

them Father. Sorry folks. I’m the only priest here at St. Philips. There are three levels of Holy Orders in the Catholic Church: deacons, priests, and bishops. Contrary to popular opinion, cardinals, monsignors,

etc are not different grades of Holy Orders. The mission of the deacon is word, altar,

and charity. They proclaim the Gospel, assist at the altar, preach homilies, witness marriages, celebrate baptisms, and perform other functions in the life of the Church. The deacon represents Christ as the one

who came, “not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many (Mt 20:28).”The word deacon in Greek is “diakonos" and literally

means “servant”. Thus, charity really is intrinsic to their vocation. “The original model of the deacon is

the martyr St. Stephen. When the Apostles in the original Church of Jerusalem saw that they were

overwhelmed by their many charitable duties, they appointed seven men to “serve at tables”, whom

they then ordained. The first mentioned is Stephen: “full of grace and power”, he accomplished much for the new faith and for the poor in the Christian

community (YOUCAT, 255).” Unlike priests, deacons are allowed to be married. If you don’t believe me just ask their wives!!! However, deacons cannot

remarry if their wives die. In the time period before Vatican II the diaconate was a stepping stone to

priesthood. The Second Vatican Council restored the permanent diaconate to its proper place in the

life of the Church. You might wish to see the announcement on the next page if you sense the

Lord is calling you to serve as a deacon. Thank you Deacon David Rosenthal, and all our deacons, for saying yes

to your vocation and serving at St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church.

Este fin de semana le damos la bienvenida al Diácono David Rosenthal a nuestra familia parroquial.

Tenemos la suerte de tener tres diáconos en San Felipe: el Diácono Mike Blome, el Diácono Joe Kuzio y ahora el

Diácono David Rosenthal. Los diáconos me han dicho que muchas personas los

llaman Padre. Lo siento amigos. Yo soy el único sacerdote aquí en San Felipe. Hay tres niveles de Órdenes Sagradas

en la Iglesia Católica: diáconos, sacerdotes y obispos. Contrariamente a la opinión popular, los cardenales,

monseñores, etc. no son diferentes grados de las Órdenes Sagradas. La misión del diácono es la palabra, el altar y la caridad. Ellos proclaman el Evangelio, ayudan en el altar,

predican homilías, son testigos de matrimonios, celebran bautismos y realizan otras funciones en la vida de

la Iglesia. El diácono representa a Cristo como Él quien vino, "no para ser servido sino para servir, y para dar su

vida en rescate por muchos (Mt 20:28)." La palabra diácono en Griego es "diakonos" y

literalmente significa "sirviente." Así, la caridad es realmente intrínseca a su vocación. "El modelo original del diácono es el mártir San Esteban. Cuando los Apóstoles en

la Iglesia original de Jerusalén vieron que estaban abrumados por sus muchos deberes caritativos, nombraron siete hombres para "servir en las mesas", a quienes luego

ordenaron. El primero mencionado es Esteban: "lleno de gracia y poder", el logró mucho para la nueva fe

y para los pobres en la comunidad cristiana (YOUCAT, 255)." A diferencia de los sacerdotes, los diáconos pueden casarse. ¡Si no me crees, solo pregúntales a sus esposas! Sin embargo, los diáconos no pueden volver a casarse si

sus esposas mueren. En el período anterior al Vaticano II, el diaconado fue un peldaño hacia el sacerdocio.
