A Note From Our Director Welcome to Reveille’s 2018 Holiday concert, ‘The Island of Misfit Toys!’ Talk about a metaphor for our GLBTQA community! So many of us have felt different, rare and alone at times in our lives for just being who we are. Being different in a world that often segregates us based on similarities is challenging and isolating, when really we should be fully celebrating the things that make us unique. President’s Message, CM PetersonAt some point in our lives, we have all struggled with a sense of loneliness, fear, or not fitting in. It’s mentally exhausting. It’s sad. It’s frustrating. However, being the odd man out, or the misfit, can actually benefit us. As an adult, this was a lesson that I learned when I came out. I was so afraid of all of the possible negative ramifications of being gay. And yet, with years of hindsight, I can see that those struggles have made me the incredibly happy, and very fortunate person that I am today.

And so, it is with an enormous sense of trepidation that I view LGBTQ+ youth today and wonder, “Do they know that they will

be okay?” “Do they have any idea how happy they can be?” “Do they know that being different can actually be a very positive thing in their life?” As we endeavor to start a new youth chorus next month, it is my hope that the love and acceptance that I have found among the many incredible individuals that make up my Reveille family, both singers and non-singers alike, can be replicated for the many youth who will chose to participate. “Changing Lives Through Music” may be our mission, but teaching tolerance and love and acceptance of ones self and others is the dream I see for this organization for many years to come.

During this holiday season I am even more aware of how fortunate I am. And so, I want to take this opportunity to thank the many wonderful people who have come into my life through this chorus. First and foremost, to my fellow singers, who I am continually humbled by when I see and hear your devotion to music every Monday night, I love you, and I thank you. To the staff members, board members, Chorus Council members, and section leaders who give freely of their time and money to make sure we are successful, you are wonderful role models for so many people and I thank you for that. To the Stonewall Foundation, Alliance Fund, and our many donors and supporters who believe in us and the mission we sing for, thank you for your trust and support. And to all of you, who come to hear us sing and listen to our message of acceptance and love, thank you for supporting us with your love, your enthusiasm, and your smiles. If our message resonates with you, invite your friends, your neighbors, and your family because it is likely that the message will resonate with them too. We can all use a little more diversity, tolerance and love in our lives.

From the bottom of my heart I thank you all and hope you have a wonderful holiday season. I wish you all much love and joy for a wonderful year ahead. I can’t wait to see you back here for our spring show as we bring you Bless Our Show(tunes)! You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll say AMEN!

Jared Brayton Bollenbacher, Artistic DirectorAfter spending six years in the Pacific Northwest as the Artistic Director of Diverse Harmony, the nation’s first queer straight alliance youth chorus, and Diverse Harmony’s small acappella ensemble Spectrum, Brayton has a year under his belt in the southwest with Desert Voices Mixed Chorus and Reveille Men’s Chorus. Prior to his time in Seattle, Brayton received a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from The Ohio State University in 2006 and a Bachelor of Arts in Sexualities Studies in 2007, completing a thesis on How Gay Male Bias influences the Gender Performance of Drag Queens in

and out of Drag. After spending six amazing years in Columbus, OH, Brayton completed his Masters in Social Work at the University of Washington (Seattle). Brayton completed his LICSW credentials in 2014 while directing Diverse Harmony. While directing both Reveille and Desert Voices, he is currently working towards his Masters in Music in Choral Conducting at the University of Arizona. Brayton is so excited to be changing lives and fostering community through song in Tucson and has ultimate dreams of helping everyone find their voice.

Kyungsun Choi, Music Director/AccompanistDr. Kyungsun Choi has been praised in the press as “a great energetic pianist” (Arizona Daily Star) and “a pianist with rich emotion and sensitivity” (The Korean Arizona Times). He has been enjoying varied careers as a soloist, chamber musician, an accompanist and a teacher.

Pianist Kyungsun Choi has given many solo recitals and chamber recitals both locally in the United States and internationally – Mexico and South Korea. As a concerto soloist, he performed with Tucson Symphony Orchestra, and two times with Tucson Repertory Orchestra playing Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 2 and Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 5 “Emperor”. He was invited and performed at several symposiums at the University of Arizona celebrating the music of Charles Ives, Aaron Copland, and Johann Sebastian Bach. He also gave master classes and lecture recitals in several colleges.

As a collaborative pianist, he participated and performed numerous chamber recitals, chamber series, and festivals. In addition, he has worked as an opera pianist and participated in many productions such as University of Northern Iowa Opera, University of Arizona Opera, Southern Arizona Symphony Orchestra Opera, Wieck Chamber Singers, and Opera Guild of Southern Arizona. He also has been an accompanist for Reveille Men’s Chorus, with whom he traveled to perform in Mexico and throughout the United States. As a teacher, his students have been appearing as prize winners at many competitions. A native of Seoul, South Korea, Pianist Kyungsun Choi graduated from the Yonsei University in Seoul, where he earned Bachelor’s degrees (BM) in Piano Performance and was awarded as “High Honored Student” by the president. He went on to the University of Northern Iowa on a full scholarship where he received a Masters of Music (MM) and served as a graduate teaching assistant. He received a Doctoral degree (DMA) in Piano Performance at the University of Arizona and served as a graduate teaching assistant. His teachers have included Dr. Paula Fan, Prof. Sean Botkin, Prof. Myonghak Lee, and Hyeran Lee.

Keith Koster, Assistant ConductorKeith has been singing with Reveille Men’s Chorus since 2013 and has served as Assistant Director and leader of Reverb since her inception in 2014. Reverb continues to perform as part of Tucson’s Arroyo Cafe live radio show at the Rialto Theater each year, benefitting local non-profits. Reverb’s debut to a standing room only crowd at GALA Festival in Denver in Summer 2016 drew raves and critical acclaim. Reverb has performed with the Tucson Symphony Orchestra, The

Chieftains and Crystal Stark.

An educator for Amphi Schools, Keith has taught chorus and musical theater to middle and high school students since 2001. He is Creative Worship and Music Director at Saguaro Christian Church where he conducts the Sanctuary Choir, Saguaro Ringers and serves as accompanist and bandleader of Shelter. He designs and creates worship weekly, bringing ancient and modern together for a unique and experiential worship experience.

He is the founder and past Artistic Director of Great Lakes Men’s Chorus in southeastern Michigan and past Artistic Director of Desert Voices where collaborations, commissions and touring were key. He served on the GALA Board for four years, his legacy being the creation of youth policies to include GLBTQ youth in GALA Choruses and events. These policies led to the creation of several queer youth choruses around the nation.

Keith is an active member of Arizona Music Educators Association, American Choral Directors Association and Association of Disciples Musicians.

Reveille Men’s Chorus is a 501c3 non-profit arts organization and is governed by a board of directors. These directors see to the continuing organizational, legal, and financial growth and stability of the chorus, in service of its mission of Changing Lives Through Music. Board members serve for three-year terms as volunteers without compensation.
