THE NATIONAL MS SOCIETY, GREATER NORTHWEST CHAPTER educates, inspires and empowers those affected by multiple sclerosis. We create innovative programs to meet the needs of people with MS and their families, host exciting fundraising events to give supporters a meaningful role in the MS movement, and fund cutting-edge research into treatments and a cure. With a passion for bringing about a world free of MS, we help everyone affected by the disease to live richer, healthier, more independent lives.

Headquartered in Seattle with offices in Anchorage and Billings, the Chapter serves over 12,000 people living with MS and more than 72,000 others including friends, caregivers and health care professionals in Alaska, Montana, Central and Western Washington. We are an affiliate of the National MS Society, which was founded in 1946.

The National MS Society’s vision is a world free of MS. Our mission is to mobilize people and resources to drive research for a cure and to address the challenges of everyone affected by MS.

Out of every $100 donated to the Chapter in 2010…$64 was spent to help people manage the high costs of prescription drugs for MS, buy wheelchairs or make homes more acces-sible, enhance relationships with loved ones or access counseling and support groups to provide some of the many options for living richer and fuller lives with MS.

$17 was spent to support cutting-edge research into new treatments and a cure.

Only $17 was spent to support our administration, management and fundraising efforts.

$2 was put into reserves for future years.

n Expanded our Chapter in January to serve the state of Alaska and in turn, our name changed to better represent our new community — the Greater Northwest Chapter. Our Chapter is now even larger as we just expanded to serve Montana as of October 1.

n Supported the development of the first oral disease-modifying treatment approved by the FDA for people with relapsing-remitting MS by contributing $1.2 million towards promising research efforts.

n Enhanced funding for three Society approved research projects in Washington state to explore the correlation between bone marrow transplants and remissions, the prevalence and risk factors contributing to caregiver abuse and the potential of self-hypnosis as a pain management therapy for depression and chronic pain affecting people living with MS.

n Mobilized activists from Alaska and Washington to lobby Congress to create a national MS registry, a confidential database to help scientists better track the incidence and prevalence of MS and other neurological disorders. This will improve the efficiency of current research and provide direction for future scientists to better understand and ultimately cure MS.

n Launched the Is It MS? awareness campaign, aimed to speed up the time it takes to get a diagnosis — and to get help.

n Raised awareness in our communities during MS Awareness Week with the launch of “Try on MS.” Volunteers living with MS asked shoppers at local malls to try on MS and the different symptoms of the disease using everyday props to double vision, challenge walking ability and more.

n Enhanced our support to people with MS by improving access to valuable resources with community partners such as ElderHealth, Aging & Long Term Care, Financial Education Partners, MultiFaith Works, Alaska MS Center, UWTV and more.

n Provided critical financial assistance by helping people with MS with guidance, referrals and resources to help contain the financial impact of MS.

n Continued our valuable Care Management Program, helping to connect individuals to the right care, at the right time, in the right place, by the right provider.

n Sponsored over 100 programs, teleconferences, symposiums, and other public education events to provide skill building strategies, relevant and comprehensive information, self-advocacy techniques and more.

n Fostered nearly 40 self-help and networking groups designed to address the emotional challenges of MS with avenues for encouragement, information, building new relationships and friendships.

n Gained local representation of two leading volunteers on the National Board of Directors — Dr. Lily Jung Henson and John Bjornson — among the many dedicated volunteers that are driving our great work.

n Increased the volunteers involved in directing the programs and services provided to people with MS in the areas of emotional health, clinical care, government relations, employment support, financial planning, long-term care and housing, newly diagnosed support and more.

n Introduced the Walk MS Super Youth, a special program for dedicated fundraisers 18 and under, with 583 new participants and more than $21,000 raised by the top 10 youth fundraisers combined.

n Marked a new revenue milestone with $7 million raised in the 2010 fiscal year.

Your donation changes lives!Financial assistance was granted to four recipients, including Todd Small, who underwent stem cell transplants for MS research, along with countless hours of service management to tap into other resources such as supervised exercise therapy during recovery and counseling to provide emotional support throughout the entire process.

Mary Maxwell of Alaska received prescription assistance when she was to be without medication for over a month while waiting for another prescription assistance program to make a determination.

Support to Families grants provided the funds needed for Alexis Barbee, a Wash-ington teenager living with MS, to attend a special Teens with MS camp hosted by the Southern California Chapter and the only camp of its kind on the West Coast.
