Call to Worship Michael Adams

Leader: Dear God, on this 67th Men’s Day Celebration, we give You thanks for men

of faith.

People: We thank You for men like Abraham, who take You at your

Word and trust You enough to follow your lead. We thank You

for men like Joshua, who will trust you even when they find

themselves outnumbered.

Leader: In this hour of worship, we give You thanks for ancestors who encourage us to

fight on.

People: We praise You for men like Martin Luther King, Jr. and Medgar

Evers, who speak truth to power and trust you for the outcome. We

praise You for men like Nelson Mandela, who fought a good fight,

finished the course, and kept the faith.

Leader: In this hour of prayer, we call the names of our sons and brothers who

stand in the need of prayer.

People: We stand as intercessors for black boys, men, and families

challenged by the evils of a school-to-prison pipeline,

targeted policing, and mass incarceration.

All: God of light and life, ignite our passion for justice and restore our faith as

we stand ready to face the living of these days. Amen.

Thank you to everyone who supported the Thank you to everyone who supported the $3.0 in

24MO! Campaign and to those who attended the reception. This two year campaign officially ended on October 31, 2016. To date, the campaign allowed us to pay for the cost of nearly two of the five

floors. Your generosity has been overwhelming.

As you can see, we still have a way to go. For those who have not completed their pledge, we want you to continue your payments even though the campaign has ended from an accounting point of

view. All of your future payments will be noted to your pledge. We ask you to continue to support AbyWest. New initiatives will roll out soon as we continue to forge ahead to reach our goal of

$8MM to complete the entire five floor community center.

We continue to strive to attain 100% participation because we want others to know our membership is committed to this effort. Your support is greatly appreciated!

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION

BIBLE QUEST This exercise is designed to stimulate a thirst for biblical knowledge

Strengthen your awareness of biblical facts by responding to as many questions as possible before

checking the scripture reference points provided. Be intentional about taking time to center

yourself as you read the entire chapter where the answers are found. As we prepare for the

fall season, let us think about new beginnings—a fresh opportunity to increase

knowledge of God’s Word. Challenge yourself to see how many questions you can

respond to before checking the Abyssinian website for the correct Bible reference

points? http://abyssinian.org/ministry/christian-education/abyssinian-institute-for-

christian-education/ Stay intentional about taking time to center yourself, as you read

the entire chapter where the answers are found.

1. Can you name the twins Judah fathered by his daughter-in-law, Tamar?

2. What did Joseph leave in Potiphar’s house that his wife used against Joseph

After refusing her advances toward him?

3. What did Gideon name the altar that he built for the Lord, after the Lord

said to him, “Peace be with you; do not fear, you shall not die.”

4. Who did Paul take with him on his missionary journey after he and Barnabas

parted ways because of a sharp dispute they had regarding John Mark?

2019 FALL COURSES

Sunday Morning Bible Study - Deacon Gwenette Reese

Sundays: 9:00 AM-10:00 AM - 1st Fl Conference Room This study of God’s Word is designed to expand its reach to those who are interested in

applying practical solutions to everyday issues. It helps members focus on the will of God, as

they read the Bible through the lens of the African-American experience.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Half Truths: Speaking with Authority- Rev. Pamela D. Mason/Sis. Charisse A. Nelson

Thursdays: 10/17, 10/24 - 7 PM - 8:30 PM | Vestry Is money really the root of all evil? If you ask God for something will it really be given to you? Is

it true that we should never judge? Have you ever found yourself disagreeing with use of a

scripture that’s been misquoted? In the age of “fake news,” it has become difficult for people to

hear, see, and recognize TRUTH. Believers of Christ, however, can find comfort in speaking the

truth of God’s Word with confidence. This course takes a close look at the complexity of

scripture and some of the misquoted and misused Bible verses that create conflict rather than

hope in the hearts of those seeking God’s grace. We will work in teams to identify ways to

communicate effectively when disagreements arise and put into practice faith principles of truth,

so that God’s people are well prepared to speak in love and with authority.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ --------------- The Legacy of Faith - Rev. Pamela D. Mason/Sis. Charisse A. Nelson Tuesdays: 7 PM – 8:30 PM - 10/29, 11/12, 11/19 | Blue Room

I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother

Eunice II Timothy 1:5-14. Faith grows over time when tested by fire! It starts as small as a

mustard seed, but when we commit to a transformed life in Christ, faith strengthens through

the power of God’s Holy Spirit. If you are ready to reach for peace that passes all understanding

through faith, join this special teaching as we seek evidence of God’s faithfulness to those who

diligently seek and glorify God’s name. We will examine stories of faith found in God’s Word,

explore the faith practices of our ancestors, and identify God’s movement in circumstances of

our lives, and in the world today.
