FOR real this is indeed rough terrain. We have never been down this road before. How does one do Valentines in style when the service providers are locked down and curfew is at 1800h? Lesson learnt? Let’s not wait for a set commercial calendar date to “seem to be” romantic. A shout out to all you innovators, mavericks, for coming up with amazing offerings and pulling it off in style this year. Kudos to you

creative heartthrobs!!

Unbelievable! Honda beats Tesla where Honda has since overcome the legality hurdle to become the first automaker to offer Level III autonomous driving in the market with its Honda Sensing Elite having all the features you would find in Honda Sensing, but it has a little something special called Traffic Jam Pilot. A question: How do traffic enforcement officers manage public indecency now, in the privacy or your

own moving vehicle cum bedroom back seat?

We anticipate with longing the Toyota Corolla Cross hybrid. Oh the joy of alternate fuelling systems. Nauseas gas will soon

be history for many a pregnant travellers and drivers.

SBS Q and A is comprehensively succinct and to the point. We sincerely apologise for a few careless language oversights

in our February edition.

VOLVO has launched the new, electric-only C40 Recharge coupe-crossover.

The C40 Recharge is Volvo’s first car to only be available with electric drivetrains, embracing its latest commitment to a zero-emission future.

The electric crossover will also only be available through online purchase. This new sales model puts the car in line with Volvo’s goal of reducing complexity in its model offering in order to bring focus on attractive pre-selected variants.

It is also being done in order to hasten deliveries of cars to customers. The Volvo C40 Recharge will give customers a high seating position, while retaining a sleek exterior.

Customers can expect a lot more than just a wholesale online shopping experience. Customers of the new car will also get their C40 Recharge with “no-strings attached”, thanks to Volvo’s new convenient care package.

The said package sees each Volvo C40 Recharge bundled with servicing, warranties, roadside assistance, as well as insurance and home charging options already pre-included.

Like the XC40 Recharge, the C40 Recharge will have one of the latest infotainment systems, which is jointly developed with Google.

It will provide consumers with Google apps and services such as Google Maps, Google Assistant and the Google Play Store.

Infotainment system is powered by the Android operating system, and comes with unlimited data.Adding on to the “no-strings

attached” sales concept, this infotainment system will also come with unlimited data.

This will result in better connectivity and the allow the C40 to receive software updates over-the-air. That also means it can continue to improve over

time, long after it has left the factory. Volvo says the coupe-crossover body shape of the C40 Recharge offers all the benefits of an SUV, but has a lower and sleeker design.

The rear of the C40 Recharge features a striking rear-end

design to go with the lower roof line, while the new front design introduces a new face for electric Volvos and includes head lights with state-of-the-art pixel technology.

The C40 Recharge is the first Volvo to be offered with only a leather-free interior.

Going back to the cabin, the C40 Recharge will not only be the first Volvo to be completely leather-free, but will also be offered with a range of colour and decor options unique to the model.

Propulsion for the C40 Recharge comes from twin electric motors, one on the front and one on the rear axle, powered by a 78kWh battery that can be fast-charged to 80% in about 40 minutes.

Anticipated range for the crossover is expected to be around 420km based on the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedure, although this figure is expected to improve over time via over-the-air software updates.

Following the introduction of the XC40 Recharge and now the C40 Recharge, Volvo Cars will roll out several additional electric models in coming years.

Expected range from the C40 Recharge’s 78kWh battery is 420km.

The firm aims for 50% of its global sales volume to consist of fully electric cars, with the rest being hybrids. By 2030, it plans for every car it sells to be purely electric.

The C40 Recharge will go to production by the third quarter of 2021. It will be built alongside the XC40 Recharge at the Volvo Cars manufacturing plant in Ghent, Belgium.

IT is now finally in Zimbabwe!

The boldness, luxury and above all, this well-priced truck is now in the country courtesy of Zimoco. DRIVEtorque has been waiting for this game changing truck for more than a year. It will be on sale from the 1st of April 2021. No this is definitely no April’s fool’s day edict.

GWM has been in South Africa and Zimbabwe since 2007. I have always said that just because Zimoco is selling the P Series, that alone is a plus because Zimoco would not sell a fly by night brand. They have a reputation to maintain and protect. They are a brand you can trust. This is something which is very important no matter what type of car you buy.

Factor in significantly lower prices when compared to similar models from Toyota and Ford, then GWM’s trucks cannot be overruled.

In South Africa, GWM together with its SUV division, Haval, have long since surpassed old SA favourites like Opel, Mitsubishi and even Honda and just keeps on growing overtaking.

BOLD LOOKThe example on review here is the range topping ‘Passenger’ double-cab LT 4×4 8AT model, which means it comes with all the bells and whistles, pulls with all four wheels and has an automatic gearbox.

As you can see, GWM didn’t hold back when they designed the range-topping P-series because a bolder exterior, on a bakkie, has yet to see the light of day.

The nose is massive and a massive nose needs a massive grill and that massive grill on its own sports more chrome than

what you will find on a small hatchback. If GWM’s intention was to make people look, they succeeded. When I went to South Africa last month I saw a couple on the roads. They turned my head. It’s a head turner. It has presence.

The P-Series in ‘Passenger’ spec even has a chrome roll bar which, of course, is standard kit, and viewed from the rear looks quite good.

Overall it’s a good looking double-cab. You can actually accuse it of being a bit flashy. My only desire would be bigger chunky wheels. Something tells me that this will be corrected on facelifts. The fenders come just a tad too far out and therefore make the wheels look small.

A wider set of tyres, maybe even with a more aggressive track, will definitely compliment the P-Series.

LUXURY EVERYWHEREIt has the feel of a Mercedes X-Class.

The P-Series is by far the most luxurious double-cab bakkie I have encountered, as far as interior finish goes, as well as features. Right throughout the vehicle, only quality materials are present, whether it be the leather seats or the rubber covering the dash.

What really stands out are the door panels covered in cross-stitched, thick padded leather – yes, padded!

Nowhere inside the P-Series model can you point and find fault because, apart from the high quality of the various coverings, the fit is also as precise as it comes. The cabin is vast with an SUV feel, offering plenty of room for front- and backseat

occupants. The image quality of 9-inch high definition touch screen is what one expects from premium vehicles and from it, a host of features are controlled.

Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatible, the screen connects to cameras afore, aft and along the sides to give the driver a 360 degree when reversing or when negotiating tight spots.

There’s even a ‘from above’ view which is created by software using the imagery recorded by all the cameras as a whole.

A ‘first’ for the truck segment must surely be the wireless charging pad situated in the centre console which, if your smartphone supports wireless charging, allows you to just place it on the pad and it starts taking on power.

Full electrically adjustable front seats, cruise control, built-in dash cam plus dash cam USB port in the rearview mirror housing, steering wheel paddle shifts, start/stop button, keyless entry; these are just some of the range-topping P-Series’ luxury features.

SAFETYAs with luxury features, GWM didn’t hold back when fitting the bakkie with safety tech. The brand says it made use of an ‘armoured system’ to strengthen the body and also used ‘high strength’ steel for the ladder frame on which the bakkie’s cab and bin sit.

Electronic safety aids include Park Distance Control, Stability Control, Traction Control, Hill Assist, Brake Assist, Hill Decent Control, park sensors in the rear and tyre pressure sensors.

Seven airbags are positioned around the cabin to keep

occupants safe.

Software making driving the P-series safer come included an ‘Intelligent Diving Assists’ system, ‘Full-Speed’ Auto Cruise Control’ with self-adaptive cruise control and ‘smart’ cruise control, Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane-Keep Assist and Traffic Sign Recognition.

The P-Series Passenger LT 4×4 8AT’s safety features, together with the luxury kit are just too vast to explain here in detail, and best to explore on GWM SA’s website.

All together there are 16 P-Series models and all of them are powered by a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine delivering 120kW and 400Nm.

VERDICTWith this modern, luxurious double cab GWM hopes to attract those who want a Ranger Wildtrak or a Hilux 2.8GD Raider by offering the same fancy features plus more, at a reduced price.

With a price starting from US$35,500, the P-Series enters the market as the least expensive truck that will give you more car and SUV luxury feel than any on the market.

Plus, Zimoco’s five-year/100 000km warranty and five-year/100 000km service plan is also a better offer than most.

Thus, if you always wanted a luxury double cab but couldn’t afford the astronomic US$60000 plus price that they go for these days, the P-Series is most definitely a worthy alternative and deserves a test drive.

IN November 2020, Honda announced that they were ready to roll out their Level III autonomous driving system. At the time, its legality was still under review as the idea of hands-free driving presented several legal challenges. Honda has since overcome this hurdle to become the first automaker to offer Level III autonomous driving in the market.

The Japanese carmaker calls it Honda Sensing Elite and they fit it in the Legend flagship sedan. It has all the features you would find in Honda Sensing, but it has a little something special called Traffic Jam Pilot.

Other semi-autonomous systems have low-speed follow with their adaptive cruise control systems. Traffic Jam Pilot does the same thing but it can operate without inputs from the steering wheel. The driver doesn't even have to put their hands on the wheel. Honda Sensing Elite has the ability to control the acceleration, braking, and steering of the vehicle.

So, how does it do all of that? According to Honda, the system determines the position of the vehicle and road conditions using data from the 3-dimensional

high-definition maps and the global navigation satellite system (GNSS*3) and detects the vehicle’s 360-degree surroundings using a number of external sensors.

At the same time, the system tracks the conditions of the driver using the monitoring camera mounted inside the vehicle. Based on such a wide range of information, the vehicle's ECU can recognize any changes in traffic behavior. That means it can predict and decide the movement of the vehicle as accurately as possible.

Granted, the test was done in Honda's testing facility, but it shows how the car reacts to various driving conditions. Of course, that doesn't mean you can't take full control of the vehicle. You can still enjoy the car around winding roads if you're in the mood to steer it yourself.

If anything, it takes some of the stress away from the daily drive. The question now is this: will we see this in all future Honda models? Perhaps not too soon. Different countries have different driving standards, so it will probably take decades before we see more cars fitted with Level III autonomy.

2. WHAT WAS THE PATH YOU TOOK TO BECOME A DEALER PRINCIPAL AT AUTOWORLD?I started with Autoworld in 2007 in the accounts department, then progressed to Finance and Admin Manager, and then to Dealer Principal in 2012, with some time spent as the workshop manager as well.

3. WHAT DO YOU FEEL IS THE BIGGEST STRENGTH OF AUTOWORLD AT THE MOMENT?It’s definitely the people. And will always be the people. We have an amazing and diverse team who are passionate about what we do. We also have a great product – which makes our jobs so much easier!

4. WHO DO YOU LOOK UP TO FOR INSPIRATION OR MENTORSHIP?It might seem a bit strange, the trick is to hire people who are smarter than you, you don’t know everything, so I look to my management team for inspiration and mentorship. They all have very different strengths from me and each other and I find that I am constantly learning from them.

5. AS A DEALER PRINCIPAL WHAT IS ONE DECISION YOU WISH YOU DIDN’T HAVE TO MAKE?Any sort of disciplinary decision on the staff is always tricky, but luckily for me I hardly ever have to do that, for we train well and understand our responsibilities well.

6. HOW DO YOU KEEP

YOUR TEAM MOTIVATED DESPITE CONFLICTS, OBSTACLES AND ECONOMIC CHALLENGES?I like to show a personal interest in the team by chatting to everyone I see, not only about their work but also about their family and personal interests. I have a real passion for getting to know the entire team, from the bottom up, and knowing what makes them tick. This has helped me to resolve conflicts before, and also to understand each person is motivated by different factors and need to be dealt with on an individual basis

7. WHAT ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT ATTRIBUTES OF SUCCESSFUL LEADERS TODAY?Leaders must lead by influence. Not rule. It’s not command and control. Leaders need to be involved with their team, so that you have an understanding of what everyone’s strengths are and use them in the best possible way. I also believe successful leaders need to be compassionate and able to listen.

8. AUTO INDUSTRY IS GENERALLY ASSOCIATED WITH MEN, HAVE YOU MET ANY OBSTACLES AS A LADY AND HOW HAVE YOU DEALT WITH THEM?When I started in the industry in 2007, I didn’t realise exactly how male dominated the industry is. The early years were a real struggle, especially when I doubled up as both Dealer Principal and Workshop Manager.

I think the shock was quite evident on some people’s faces to see that the workshop manager was in fact a lady who also didn’t have much technical experience! I got over my initial fears and learnt to rely on my technical team and their skills. I came to understand that so long as I had

Meet Alison De Klerk a leader par excellence, whose heart is for the people and families she leads at Autoworld and for her clients and the great product they have. A woman not perturbed at all by being thrown into the deep end, in a

men’s space.

She has come up tops in the Advanced Dealer Management Training Program, trumping the veteran know- it -all’s, with grace without losing an iota of her femininity. Now that’s

woman empowerment in real action!!

confidence in the team around me and supported them as best I could, they would support me and come through on the technical aspects when dealing with customers.

9. WHAT’S THE MOST IMPORTANT RISK YOU TOOK IN YOUR LIFE AND WHY?I would have to say that this was signing up for the Advanced Dealer Management Training Programme in South Africa in 2012.

I hadn’t done any form of formal studying for years, and the other members on this training course, were all men, with years and years of experience in the motor industry. My confidence levels were very low and I felt that I was way out of my depth.

I made the DECISION to overcome that feeling of being inadequate and a year later, not only had I finished the course, I was the top student in my class!

10. HOW DO YOU CONTINUE TO GROW AND DEVELOP AS A LEADER?To grow and develop as a leader, I think you need to always accept the responsibility of leading, to understand that you do not know all things, that you do have weaknesses and you need to accept them. Once you have recognized them, you do not focus on them, you hire to your weaknesses, you are then able to accept yourself better by doing what you do best without stress.

You also need to learn to listen to those with more experience than you, from anywhere and everywhere, and you need to realise that those with more experience are not necessarily managers in your organization. 11. HOW DO YOU ALIGN AND BALANCE AUTOWORLD’S BUSINESS OBJECTIVES WITH YOUR PERSONAL VISION AND GOALS?Over the past year we have worked very hard on Autoworld’s values, and have had input from a wide selection of staff members on various levels within the company structure. We have listed personal values, and over

several sessions, found the core values that resonated across the board with our staff on both a professional and personal level.

It is extremely beneficial to have a staff complement that truly believes in the company’s objectives, as they have had personal input as well, there is no conflict of being one way at work and another out there.

12. WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT AUTOWORLD?The people! Definitely the people! And of course, the product we sell!

13. WHAT WOULD BE YOUR MESSAGE TO THE GIRL

CHILD?Whatever you do in life, do it to the best of your ability. No matter how small or menial you might think a task or job is, the satisfaction of knowing that you have done it well will pay off. Promotion and reward is given to the faithful.

And also remember to be kind to people. You will never regret being kind!

14. WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE CAR AND WHY?The ISUZU mu-X. It combines all aspects of luxury and safety, as well as being able to tackle any terrain.

THE all-new Range Rover Sport has a beautiful cabin, with elegant styling and premium materials throughout. The seats are comfortable and provide plenty of head- and legroom, but the optional third-row seats make you feel like in most SUVs can do with more space. There are plenty of standard and available features.

The infotainment system is complex as you begin but exciting as you get used to it.The Range Rover Sport seats five people in its standard configuration, and the available third row increases the seating capacity to seven.

Leather upholstery and power-adjustable front seats come standard. Premium leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, massaging front seats, heated and ventilated rear seats, a refrigerated front center console, and a heated steering wheel are available.

The highly adjustable front seats make it easy to find a suitable driving position. They're comfortable and supportive as well, though the ample side bolstering may bother larger drivers. The second-row rear seats have enough head- and legroom for adults to ride comfortably, but the available third-row seats are incredibly cramped. No adults will want to ride back there, and even children will feel squeezed on longer drives.

For securing child safety seats, the Range Rover Sport has two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the rear outboard seats.

Standard features in the Range Rover Sport include dual-zone automatic climate control and the Touch Pro Duo infotainment system with two 10-inch touch screens, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, navigation, an eight-speaker audio system, satellite radio, HD Radio, a USB port, Bluetooth, and a Wi-Fi hot spot.

The Range Rover Sport's two large touch screens are easy to see. The infotainment system takes time to master but it is exhilarating once you get into the groove.

Available features include a

panoramic sunroof, tri- or quad-zone automatic climate control, a rear-seat entertainment system, and multiple Meridian audio systems. You can also equip the Range Rover Sport with Land Rover’s Activity Key, which is a waterproof wristband that lets you lock or unlock your vehicle.

Standard driver assistance features include a rearview camera, front and rear parking sensors, low-speed automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and lane keep assist.

Available active safety features include a head-up display, blind spot monitoring, driver drowsiness monitoring, traffic sign recognition, adaptive cruise control, high-speed automatic emergency braking, rear cross traffic alert, parallel and perpendicular park assist, 360-degree parking sensors, and a surround-view parking camera system. Also available is a clear exit monitor, which helps you avoid opening the car door when traffic is approaching.

Leave the engine and 8-speed automatic gearbox to their own devices and you’ll find power delivery to be nice and progressive. The build of speed is friendly, something you’ll appreciate in town. When you punch the accelerator, the engine gets exited immediately. The engine comes into its element at a maximum power of (PS/kW/rpm) 249 / 183 / 4,000 and there is a constant supply of power to make you smile. Maximum torque of (Nm/rpm) 600 / 1,250-2,250 is available at your disposal. You can easily register 0-100kph time in 8.36sec with the plush Range Rover Sport.

The way the engine sounds is also pleasant. It does not have the whine of the supercharged V6 or the hoarse note of the SVR’s V8 but it’s fun to hear the four-cylinder unit’s soundtrack transition from a muted growl to a louder snarl as you press on. Whoever tuned the acoustics of the engine sure has done a good job.

STARTING from USD55,000 for the 4x2 Automatic this New Generation Mitsubishi Pajero Sport is unlike any other Sports Utility vehicle currently sold in Zimbabwe. It offers the discerning family SUV driver, with a love for adventure, the opportunity to enjoy a dynamic off-roader with exceptional cruising capabilities.

Nonetheless it’s not just stylish good looks and impressive capabilities which make the Pajero Sport what it is today. This is a Luxury, yet Sporty, SUV that is both packed to the brim with ergonomic design features and versatile in almost any

From its rich and sophisticated appeal to its off-road tech, the Pajero Sport is a vehicle that offers serious style, extreme comfort, perfect convenience, ultimate safety and a rugged “go anywhere” and do just about anything ability.

circumstance. From its unique interior design to its electric parking brake with auto hold, the New Mitsubishi Pajero Sport provides everything a 21st-century driver will need to keep connected (including USB Connection Points).

This is an SUV built around comfort, convenience and safety and it is now taking the Zimbabwean market by storm.

THE DRIVEThe Pajero truly excelled at as we navigated through the leafy suburbs of Borrowdale. The vehicle is surefooted, well planted yet without seemingly being

heavy. It is steady and there is no stumbling along. Although it has the dimensions of large 7-seater SUV, it actually behaves more like a sport sedan.

The steering is on point, easy in tight parking lots and then firming up when you hit the highway thus ensuring a direct feel. The Pajero wafts along at speed, soft and compliant, lending you the feeling that you are piloting your favorite couch around town.

Truth to be told the Sport in the name is there for a reason. When you usher it along it picks up its skirts and hustles, even

becoming a little tail happy on wet corners.

PERFORMANCEThe sportiness comes from the 2.4 litre in-line four, turbo diesel engine, pumping out 133kW and 430Nm. That power is sent through an 8-speed auto transmission and the Super Select II AWD system. This ensures that, even if the rear brakes traction momentarily in a wet corner, the system pulls it back in the blink of an eye.

The power delivery is the most impressive. It's linear with the gear ratios, this ensures the engine never sounds like it’s over revving, even when you are towing 2.7 ton's unbraked or 750kg braked.

INTERIORThe Pajero Sport borders on all out luxury, featuring keyless entry, a power tailgate, rain sensing auto wipers, auto lights, auto dimming rearview mirror, sunroof, leather seats and a 3rd row that folds flat into the floor.

As far as technology is concerned there is a 7” touchscreen infotainment featuring Apple Car Play and Android Auto controlled by a multi-function steering wheel that is height and reach adjustable as well as the standard Bluetooth and voice control for telephoning. There is also a compliment of USB ports and a 220v AC outlet for larger use.

Interior space is cavernous with legroom and space for 5 adults, as well as their luggage with the 3rd row down. Put the 3rd row up and your luggage space decreases to 131l, and it must be said that the third-row seating is really only usable by smaller people.

We’ve just got to say it! We just can’t keep in – Watch out Toyota Fortuner, the sturdy and vigorous Next-generation Pajero Sport is coming for you! We’ve never had the opportunity to review such a refined, more advanced, tougher SUV. One which is a great all-rounder and brilliant at anything you ask it to do that it has been designed for.

Everything from its fearless off-road ability and engine power, to its fuel economy and build quality simply screams “I am the best!” which is why we cannot sing enough this vehicle’s praises. Even if you think we’re being a little melodramatic, we assure you that this is authentic. Let’s not beat around the bush. Let’s cut to the chase. Here are the

reasons why we believe this is the Best Pajero ever built!

IT IS A REFINED-LOOKING SUVThis is not your mom’s SUV (although it does make an excellent family vehicle due to its size, comfort and safety), and it looks (and performs) the part of a rough and tumble off-roader. However, just a quick glance at the front and side views of this outstanding SUV will immediately tell you that this is one stylish looking vehicle , that puts lesser Sports Utility Vehicles to shame. Yes, it still has an aggressive nuance, but it will also fit quite nicely side by side any current luxury or sports vehicles.

Inside the Pajero Sport, while it is still rather manly in some ways, it is even more refined than the outside styling. Exquisite. In fact, it is utterly opulent thanks to the leather seating (which we are pleased to say comes as standard) and the fully trimmed leather interior (including an impressive and multifunctional

Steering Wheel) which rounds off the luxurious look and feel of the entire cabin interior.

SAFETY FEATURESThe Mitsubishi Pajero Sport is available in a range of eye-catching colours such as White Diamond, Sterling Silver, Graphite Grey. Its outstanding safety features are one of the many reasons why this SUV is as popular worldwide:

• Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution

• 7 Airbags

• ASTC (Active Stability and Traction Control)

• ABS & EBD

• BAS (Brake Assist System)

• HSA (Hill Start Assist System)

• Dusk Sensing Headlamps

• Rain Sensing Windscreen Wipers

• Rear Park Distance Control

• Rear View Camera

PAJERO SPORT DIMENSIONSAlthough a big SUV ( just check out the impressive Dimensions below), the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport is still surprisingly agile thanks to its great turning radius:

DIMENSIONS• 2700kg Towing Mass (Braked)

• 30º Approach Angle*

• 24.2º Departure Angle*

• 23.1º Ramp Breakover Angle*

BYD (Build Your Dreams) is the largest Electronic vehicle manufacturer in the world. An impressive feat especially considering that the company was only established in 1995 and only started manufacturing electric vehicles in 2003. BYD Zimbabwe, a subsidiary of the Chinese manufacturer has a new offering, the BYD E6 a five passenger electric crossover which offers the driver, a glimpse into the future where petrol cars are a thing of the past.

From the outside, the E6 has the looks of a hatchback but once you are in the driver's seat it certainly towers over the sedans and other crossovers. For perspective, it sits slightly lower than the Landrover Freelander. The body style is simply neat and concise. For an electric car, it might seem a tad vanilla but in this case its

simplicity is definitely its strength.

It has average dimensions (4560/1822/1630 mm) and an extended wheelbase of 2830 mm and weight of 2670 kg, which makes it quite comfortable for moving 5 people and a load of up to 385 litres for both short and long distances.

The front and rear of the Byd E6 has an independent Wishbone suspension with double wishbones and 17-inch wheels. The coolest component of the exterior is definitely the radiator grille in the form of a trapezoid with a model emblem and LED headlights and lights on the sides.

Inside the cabin there are wide adjustable leather seats with headrests and armrests (the

driver and passenger next to the driver), cup holders, a cd player with Infinity speakers around the perimeter, a vehicle state control center touchscreen, buttons for activating security systems, climate control and multimedia.

There is no outside noise from the car once you close the doors. It delivers its power quietly.

Under the hood of this crossover is a synchronous motor of the magneto-electric type with a capacity of 268 hp and a torque of 406 Nm, which is powered by its own iron-phosphate battery with an energy consumption of 21.5 kW per 100 km with a total power reserve of up to 300 km in the urban terrain.

Electric cars can accelerate from

0 to 100 km in 8 seconds, and the maximum acceleration possible goes up to 140 km / h. It is possible to charge an electric car at home from a standard 220 V or 10 kW network in 6 hours, but at fast stations with an alternating current of 100 kW – in 15-40 minutes by 80%. The car is also charged by regenerative braking.

The BYD E6 is available from BYD Zimbabwe. EVs cost less to maintain for obvious reasons and are ideal for company fleets. The price range of the BYD range is also an encouraging factor. BYD can help you build your EV fleet today.

THE Volkswagen Polo is a small car that’s comfortable to drive and has a spacious, plush cabin, but it’s rather dull to drive. It’s not lively.

There’s a lot of Russian dolls going on in manufacturer car ranges these days. Cars tend to look similar on the outside, but the great thing is that big-car luxury is cloning and making its way down to smaller models. The Volkswagen Polo is evidence of that – glance at it and you’d be forgiven for think it was the firm’s large and more expensive Golf.

It’s the same on the inside. For a small car, the Volkswagen Polo is very comfortable and practical, with a distinctly upmarket feel to it. Inside, there are swathes of soft, squidgy plastics, as well as a range of colourful dashboard trims to brighten up its cabin even further.

It’s easy to get comfortable inside

the Polo, as there’s plenty of seat adjustment on its front seats and more headroom than you’ll find in alternatives. Things are equally comfy in the back, and as the Volkswagen Polo has rear doors, climbing into the back seat is a breeze.

Every version of the Volkswagen Polo comes with a slick 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with crisp graphics and responsive, intuitive menus. And, as long as you avoid the most basic S trim, this system also comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring. But the Polo’s party piece is its 12-inch Active Info display – an optional digital screen that replaces the conventional dials.

The Polo proves that being a jack of all trades is no bad thing – it’s quite good you, that you have to wonder why anyone would buy a VW Golf.

You can get the Volkswagen Polo with a range of petrol and diesel engines and most come with a manual gearbox. However, if you go for a 1.0 TSI petrol engine, you also have the option of a seven-speed automatic gearbox.

Go for the turbocharged 70kW 1.0-litre TSI. Not only does this engine have some useful extra power, it’s also more economical than the basic engine. That said, if you do a lot of driving on the motorway, it’s worth considering one of the 1.6-litre diesels.

The Volkswagen Polo is also impressively relaxing to drive. It’s comfortable around town and tackles twisty country lanes with confidence. OK, so it’s not quite as much fun to drive as the SEAT Ibiza, but the Polo is quieter on the motorway and less bouncy on bumpy roads a relief for Zimbabwe’s challenging roads.

Furthermore, all Polos come with automatic emergency braking, if it senses an obstacle on the road, and as such, a full five stars crash rating from Euro NCAP.

So, if you’re looking for a small car that’s safe, spacious, well built, comfortable and available with bundles of cutting-edge tech, the Polo should be right at the top of your shortlist.

Take a look at the latest Volkswagen Polo deals or see how much you could save on our favourite VW Polo model by clicking the button below…? The button below?

It might look small on the outside, but the Volkswagen Polo is impressively roomy on the inside. The boot’s very spacious too, but you’ll still have to remove a bike’s front wheel before it’ll fit inside.

The latest Polo is so roomy it'll make you wonder if you'd ever need the larger (but not much more practical) Golf…

The latest Volkswagen Polo is much more spacious inside than the old model. It’s so spacious in fact that it runs the larger VW Golf very close in terms of outright roominess.

There’s loads of space in the front and plenty of adjustment to help you get comfy, especially if you’re tall. All the controls are within easy reach and it’s dead easy to tweak the steering wheel position to give you a good view of the digital instrument display.

Things are just as roomy in the back seats. There’s almost as much leg and headroom as in a Golf and far more space than you’ll find in a Vauxhall Corsa or even the Skoda Fabia. Your taller passengers will have no trouble getting comfy and there’s enough space under the seats in front for them to tuck their feet under, as well.

The Volkswagen Polo is one of the best small family cars for carrying three abreast. It’s still a little cozy with three adults on board but the central seat’s reasonably wide and there’s only a small lump in...

2021 VW Polo:Smart, Comfy

but not Lively

...the floor to get in the way of your middle passenger’s feet.

The Volkswagen Polo comes with five doors as standard. This is so that you won’t have to jump out to let your friends climb in the back. It’s a breeze to fit a child seat using the standard Isofix anchor points. These anchors are clearly marked but you’ll have to be careful not to lose the removable plastic covers.

The Volkswagen Polo’s large front door pockets have no trouble holding a large and a small bottle each and the glovebox is reasonably roomy, too. The cupholders beside the handbrake are fair if not particularly generous and there’s a sliver of extra storage under the centre console for your phone.

The rear door bins are big enough to carry a large bottle and the front seats come with some fabric seat-back pockets too, but there’s no folding rear armrest.

The Volkswagen Polo’s 351-litre boot is a massive 71 litres larger than the old car’s one and has 21 litres more space than the practical Skoda Fabia. The Polo has a slight boot lip which can get in the way when you’re loading heavy items but its square shape makes it easy to pack full of large boxes.

With the rear seats up, there’s enough room to carry a baby buggy or two suitcases and there’s a selection of handy tether points and hooks to keep smaller

items secure.

You can flip the back seats down using the latches beside the headrests without having to worry about lifting the seat bases up first – unlike in the old Volkswagen Polo. Entry-level cars come with a single folding bench seat while Highline versions get a two-way (60:40) split seat instead. This will let you carry as many as two passengers and some long luggage in the boot at once.

With the rear seats folded, the Volkswagen Polo has an almost flat load bay – there’s no annoying step in the floor like in a Corsa. This makes it easy to slide heavy boxes right up behind the front seats. There’s enough space to carry a bike too, but you’ll have to remove one of its wheels first.

The Volkswagen Polo is a breeze to drive around town and reasonably quiet on the motorway but you couldn’t call it exciting and its entry-level petrol engines are weedy.

You can get the Volkswagen Polo with a range of petrol and diesel engines and with either a manual or an automatic gearbox.

The entry-level non-turbocharged 48kW and 60kW 1.0-litre petrol engines are best avoided – they feel sluggish around town and you struggle to keep up with fast-moving traffic.

The 70kW turbocharged 1.0-litre model is a much better bet. It’s fairly quiet around town

(although it does grumble slightly when you accelerate hard) and feels much less strained at motorway speeds. In fact, it’s quite good that the range-topping 86kW petrol seems unnecessary.

The Volkswagen Polo is available with a seven-speed automatic gearbox, which will give your left leg a rest in heavy traffic but can be a little jerky at slow speeds – particularly when you’re trying to park.

The top-of-the-range 70kW diesel is available with the same automatic gearbox. It (or the lesser 60kW diesel) makes sense if you’re a high-mileage driver. They’re noticeably louder than the petrol Polos around town but they have more effortless grunt, that makes them feel better suited to motorway driving.

The Volkswagen Polo is easy to drive around town thanks to its light steering and good visibility. The relatively slim pillars (where the front doors meet the windscreen) don’t block your view out at junctions and its large rear windscreen helps make parking a doddle, too. For a little extra peace of mind, pick a Highline car – they come with parking sensors as standard.

To really show off to your passengers (or if the thought of parallel parking fills you with dread) you can get a system that’ll steer the car into tight spaces all on its own – all you have to do is operate the pedals.

The same system can also steer

you out of spaces and as you head out of the city you’ll find the Volkswagen Polo is impressively comfortable for such a small car. Even in top-spec models (with larger 17-inch alloy wheels) you won’t be shaken too much by monster potholes and it doesn’t lean excessively in tight corners either.

You can pay extra to get adaptive suspension but the standard Polo’s more than comfortable enough, and the addition of a Sport setting in a supermini feels a bit superfluous.

It isn’t as fun to drive as a Ford Fiesta but the Volkswagen Polo is more grown up at motorway speeds. It does a good job of muting both wind and tyre noise and it feels impressively stable for a small car.

Euro NCAP crash-tested the new Polo in 2017 where it scored the maximum five stars. part of the reason for that was that even entry-level S models come with automatic emergency braking that’ll stop (or try its best to stop) the car for you if it detects an impending collision.

Adaptive cruise control (that can adjust the Polo’s speed to match cars in front then return to a preset speed once the road’s clear) is available across the range as an option, too.

The Volkswagen Polo has a smart, upmarket cabin and feels impressively well built for such a small car. Unfortunately, plenty of desirable features are not standard.

The semi-automaticparking assist system

ISUZU has finally taken the wraps off the all-new 2021 mu-X. And judging from its design and engineering, they’ve pulled out all the stops to make it a truly class-competitive mid-sized 7-seater SUV.

Compared to the current mu-X, it’s 25 mm longer, 10 mm wider, and 15 mm taller. Its wheelbase has also been stretched by 10 mm.

Outside, the all-new mu-X takes a decidedly bold and futuristic approach with a sleek and sporty

silhouette. It’s high on tech with LEDs for both head- and taillights and a power tailgate function. It also offers 18 or 20-inch alloy wheels, windshield that offers both UV-A and UV-B protection, and windshield wiper sprayers that are integrated into the wiper arm.

The 2021 mu-X rides on an all-new platform dubbed Dynamic Drive Platform. Like the all-new D-Max, it features ultra-high strength steel in its construction for the first time.

The front suspension remains independent double wishbones, while at the back is a coil spring suspension with five links. According to Isuzu, the mu-X can now traverse water up to 800 mm deep.

As for powertrain choices, the mu-X shares them with the D-Max. The base models are powered by a 1.9-liter RZ4E with 150 horsepower and 350 Nm of torque. Meanwhile, the 3.0-liter 4JJ3-TCX makes 190 horsepower and 450 Nm of torque.

All engines are paired with 6-speed gearboxes, with the manual is only available with the smaller engine. Only the 3.0-liter is offered with four-wheel drive, and that one comes with Isuzu’s very own Terrain Command system as well as rear diff lockers.

Inside, the mu-X levels up in terms of luxury and convenience features. Aside from the upgraded looks and materials, it’s fitted with features such as a 4.2-inch color TFT display embedded in the instrument cluster, paddle shifters, a PM 2.5 high-efficiency air filtration system, a 9-inch touchscreen with ceiling mounted speakers (there are a total of 8 all around), Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, automatic climate control, an 8-way power adjustable driver’s seat, a 6-way power front

passenger seat, an electronic parking brake with auto hold, and much more.

It also gets Isuzu’s Matrix Safety Intelligence driver assist system. Using a pair of stereoscopic cameras, it gives it forward collision warning with auto braking, automatic high beam control, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, mis-acceleration mitigation, and adaptive cruise control with low speed follow and stop & go support.

This is on top of the usual 6 SRS airbags, ABS with EBD, and stability control with hill hold assist.

DRIVEtorque expects the 2021 Isuzu mu-X to go on sale in Zimbabwe before the end of this year.

THERE is now an all new Mercedes-Benz GLE 7-seater premium SUV which is competing with the likes of the BMW X5 and the Audi Q5. The latest GLE SUV exhibits luxury and advancement in one package.

Zimbabwe will miss out for now.“The challenge we have with this model is that once you order the 7-seater option you lose the spare wheel. So, we are not ordering the 7-seater unless a customer specifically asks for it” said Manfred Chaniwa,

Zimoco’s Business Development Manager.

Now on its fourth generation, the Mercedes-Benz GLE, a head-turning design exhibiting elegance and strength through its character lines and chrome accents around the windows. You also get a set of 21-inch alloys which fills up the wheel wells handsomely. For superior vision on the road during night time, the GLE is reinforced with Multibeam LED headlights with Ultra Range beams.

The Mercedes-Benz GLE’s interior is executed meticulously with details embarking elegance and class. Notably, the dashboard layout itself is striking, a familiar layout which can be found on other Mercedes models today.

You can also personalize your GLE’s interior through its 64-colored premium ambient lighting. Relatively, the GLE’s wheelbase is longer than its predecessor, translating those dimensions into a roomy cabin that’s capable of sitting up to seven passengers comfortably.

This vehicle is also meant for carrying stuff, by expanding cargo through electronically-folding rear seats. Moreover, there’s also an available kick motion activated power liftgate for ease of access to the boot as you store your precious items.

The GLE screams advancement given its generous amount of intuitive safety systems mainly for both the driver and its passengers, featuring the brand’s voice-activated Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) infotainment system.

It is situated on top of the dashboard, stretching about a massive 12.3-inch. The system enables you to set your destination input, answer or make phone calls, manage your playlist, and much more. As expected, Apple Carplay

integration is also made available. Under the hood is an in-line 4 turbo diesel engine which produces a healthy 183kW and 500 Nm of torque. It is then paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission. Like before, the GLE offers a 4MATIC all-wheel drive which is suitable for challenging terrains ahead.

What’s new is the availability of the EQ Boost on the GLE, which happens to be a mild hybrid feature wherein energy recovered from braking and systematic engine shutoffs, delivering a boost of energy when needed or when eliminating turbo lag.

Other safety features include blind-spot assist, Active Brake Assist, and the advance 360-degree camera. Features which enhances driver confidence.

The GLE exhibits iconic Mercedes-Benz design while remaining true to its character as an off-roader. Tis design idiom, perfectly embodies our design philosophy of sensual purity, thus representing modern luxury. The interior derives its fascination from the contrast between the luxurious and elegant design and the digital high-tech of our MBUX system

DRIVEtorque hopes there is a customer out there who will order it so that we can see it on our roads and who knows maybe we can even get to sample it

THE Rendering is just too good to be true

This artist is not giving up hope. Maybe there will be a new rotary sports car one day.

“Without the rotary engine, there would probably be no Mazda. And without Mazda, the rotary engine certainly wouldn’t have been in production for nearly 50 years.” This is the message the Zoom-Zoom company published on a page dedicated to the quinquagenary (I promise I did not make up that word!!) of its rotary engine in 2017.

Since then, Mazda has announced the rotary’s return as a range-extending engine, but with no signs of a new RX sports car.

Well, there was the jaw-dropping RX-Vision concept back in 2015, a production version is unlikely to happen.

That said, Mazda hasn’t given up on the prospects of a rotary-powered sports car, although it has described this project as being a “race against time” due to emissions regulations getting stricter. It’s “still our dream,” said the company’s head of R&D and the chief designer in October 2019, so it just may happen someday.

Much like Mazda, Motor1.com reader Enoch Gabriel Gonzales is also a dreamer by deciding to create his very own RX-7. This purely hypothetical fourth generation of the sports car is a mélange between the old and the new by taking cues from the

second-gen model (FC) and mixing them up with the aforementioned RX-Vision concept. Here’s how the author describes his work:

“Many elements were taken from the RX-Vision Concept showcased in 2015, but some were also derived from the second-generation coupe from the 90s. These include the almost oval-shaped greenhouse, rear window that curves around the edges of the B-pillar, horizontal light that connects the tail lamps.

The grille and headlights were also placed much lower than current Mazdas, with the emblem placed above the grille to make it more reminiscent of the original RX-7. I also included an original detail which I call

the ‘eye-socket.’ This features sculptured details above the headlights that mimic a pair of closed pop-up headlights that became a trend in the 80s."

It’s a stunning machine for sure, and arguably one of the best renderings we’ve seen lately, depicting a new RX. There had been some exciting rumors about a new rotary performance car to celebrate Mazda’s centenary in 2020, but that’s not likely going to happen. Nevertheless, we’re keeping our fingers crossed.

The lessons learned during the development of the range-extending engine will eventually lead to the revival of the RX. In the meantime, the only thing we can do is ogle at the RX-Vision and renderings like this one right here.

2022 Mazda RX-7looks unbelievably amazing

PROS• Astonishing coziness• Extraordinarily handsome and muscularly unique looking• Outstanding value for money• Precise steering• Impressive fuel economy• Full-time four-wheel drive• Nimble handling

CONS• Tight dimensions (we would love a bigger Triton)

The Mitsubishi Triton is the most underestimated new vehicle on the market yet it is one of the most amazing trucks on the market.

The Triton has always sold strongly, based on props of value and ability. In spite of having clear feathers in its cap, the Triton is still seen by many as an 'almost' truck — the double cab for those that can't afford a Toyota Hilux or a, Ford Ranger. DRIVEtorque is inclined to say that this assertion is rather unfortunate and uninformed. We took the Triton for a drive last year. It is

impressive when it comes to road trips, towing missions and that adventure trip after lockdown.

The inclusion of 6-speed transmission options, more generous ride-height, and much improved looks will help the Triton cement itself as one of Zimbabwe’s most popular truck competing with Hilux, Ford Ranger and Isuzu.

Almost a full year on from its rebirth, the Triton VRX 4WD's 'special introductory price' of US$51400 still stands, meaning it's most likely here to stay. Sporting features like rain-sensing wipers, running boards, and of course four-wheel drive.

That four-wheel drive system is perhaps the greatest mechanical difference between this one and the Triton flagship. While the VRX's model-specific Super Select II system is AWD, all other all-paw variants get standard part-time 4WD.

The Triton's 2.4-litre diesel engine has more torque and powerful. The Mitsubishi

2.4-litre turbo diesel produces 133kW @ 3,500rpm and 430Nm @ 2,500rpm, Vs the Hilux's 110kW @ 3,400rpm and 343Nm between 1,400rpm and 2,800rpm on a manual gearbox model. A Hilux with an automatic transmission can handle 400Nm @ 1,600 – 2,000rpm.

Gravel roads and city roads are a delight in pickup terms, thanks to the Triton’s narrow body and ability to change direction sharply. The ride is smooth with nothing so dramatic to throw you off your line, and two-piston brake calipers with large discs up front provide easily controlled, powerful braking. Unlike the detached sensation of some pickups, you feel so directly in control of the Triton.

Body roll is minimal for a pickup. The few body ruts will, they won’t be thrown around too much in fast bends. The low-speed ride – even without a load in the back – is genuinely impressive, with good isolation of sharp bumps and few situations where the typical pickup hop at the back is encountered.

Parking is easy, as long as you can find a 5.3m space. Large mirrors help judge the back, which is slightly easier to see than in the previous model thanks to squared-off tail lights.

The closest thing to 'cost cutting' is the Mitsubishi's comparably diminutive dimensions. Compared to a Ranger the Triton's overall and wheelbase length is 84mm and 220mm shorter, respectively, while width is 35mm narrower and its bed is 29mm shorter.

The gulf in price between the Triton and its key rivals is vast enough and in our opinion not worth buying the more expensive options for you get more car in the Triton than from competition. This might change soon with the advent of the P Series as it will again offer more car and truck for less. It's made a grand first impression. Now, let's see over the next few months if it can keep that up.

Triton has a drive away price of US$51400 from Zimoco the only official dealership of Mitsubishi in Zimbabwe.

AS a family car, there is no faulting the updated Nissan X-Trail range. It's one of the quietest and most comfortable SUVs in its grade. It time comes with Nissan Connect and Nissan Intelligent Mobility. The 2.0 litre model feels lackluster when compared to its turbocharged rival, but that is a minor issue and can be overlooked if you value convenience and comfort over performance.

PROS- Refined, quiet cabin- Supremely comfortable seats- Nissan Intelligent Mobility with AEB!

CONS- Lackluster performance for the 2.0 litre models- Cabin feels outdated when compared against rivals

PERFORMANCE The base 2.0 litre unit, leaves much to be desired. A CVT gearbox is standard across the range, providing a smooth driving experience that is most welcoming in urban settings.

RIDE & HANDLING The Nissan X-Trail was never meant to be an agile SUV, and the updated range continues to prioritise comfort over deftness. There are certainly more dynamically superior SUVs out there for roughly the same money. It's best to really dial into your own needs. You wouldn't want a stiffly-sprung SUV with elderly folk in the car now, would you?

COMFORT This is easily by far the X-Trail's trump card. Few SUVs within this price bracket can match the X-Trail when it comes to cabin comfort. The Zero Gravity-inspired seats can't be matched, and the extra layers of insulating materials further reduce ambient and engine noise.

SAFETY The facelifted X-Trail also scores highly in this department, largely because of the Nissan Intelligent Mobility. It features Forward Collision Warning, AEB, Intelligent Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning, and Intelligent Around View Monitor

with Intelligent Object Detection, most of which are only available in premium or luxury vehicles. The fact that the X-Trail comes with these is nothing short of spectacular.

SPACE Non-hybrid models have the benefit of a third-row seat, which accommodates two children at best. Adults will struggle to fit comfortably at the back, but it's fairly useable and bearable short trips. One of the most important factors to consider when buying a car, is versatility.

Whether you’re zooming through the city or off-roading to your holiday destination, your vehicle needs to keep you safe and comfortable, while at the same time sporting good looks.

It is spacious, fuel efficient, safe, and provides all the necessities for a comfortable journey, with

the added benefit of being able to venture off-road.

The new Nissan X-Trail is intelligent, efficient and attractive, while offering the same torque with less bulk, making it safer than any of its predecessors.

Its streamlined aerodynamic design, resembles the Qashqai. It has a strong presence on the road with dynamically designed headlamps and sharp contours.

The new Nissan X-Trail is equipped with Nissan’s Intelligent Mobility, to increase your confidence and safety while on the road. NIM includes Intelligent Around View Monitoring & Moving Object Detection, Intelligent Blind Spot Intervention, Intelligent Automatic Headlights, Intelligent 4×4 Functionality, and Intelligent Lane Intervention.

IT is quite obvious that JLR is facing some major dilemma with their plans.

With unsatisfying sales figures and the constant growth of demand for EVs, Jaguar has strategically planned to electrify its entire vehicle lineup within the next decade, hoping to gain advantage over its rivals.

The XE and XF sedans are not receiving the same glory as their crossover siblings, with sales significantly dropped down by 25% and 17% respectively this year. This is quite alarming for the brand since these numbers are not an indication of a good chapter for them. On the contrary, the E-Pace delivers success by being the company’s second best-selling model (after the F-Pace) as illustrated in their sales chart.

The project hasn’t been given the green light yet, by the way, although the brand wishes to start by developing a full-on

luxury electric sedan to replace the brand’s XJ within two years. Its competition will be based from the upcoming Porsche Taycan and strong sellers such as the Tesla Model S. Still, Jaguar plans to maintain the luxury profile of its XJ with a rewarding touch of zero emissions, making it an alternative to the Mercedes-Benz S-Class or say a Bentley Flying Spur.

As for the XE and XF, farewell awaits them by the year 2023 given the replacement of an all-electric crossover which is said to be slightly bigger than the Audi E-tron. By 2026, Jaguar’s entire lineup would be nearly all electrified, as the Castle Bromwich could be redeveloped as JLR’s specialist EV factory, making vehicles based on the new all-wheel-drive MLA EV platform, and leaving their flagship J-Pace the only survivor of its current vehicle lineup until 2027.

Also, the F-Type is not bound for

any replacement project as it bids farewell by 2020, although there is a possibility for an electric Jaguar sports car. On the side note, MLA platform batteries are to be sourced from the new Coventry Hyperbat factory run by Williams Engineering and Unipart.

The company expects to deliver 300,000 units of four or five all-electric Jaguars per year. That said, they may benefit from the much higher retail prices and the expected surfing of trends which may result to a sizeable chunk of the luxury vehicle market switching to battery power.

With the product plans clearly elaborated above, it is quite obvious that JLR (Jaguar Land Rover Automotive) is facing some major dilemma with their plans aiming to develop its next-generation cars based on the MLA aluminium platform. With the implementation of a full electric lineup, JLR shall

drastically improve its fuel economy figures.

With this, Land Rover’s three brand-pillars, the Range Rover, Discovery and Defender, could still thrive by just using a 48V hybrid technology.

Although, most sources may find it quite difficult for Land Rover to develop viable battery-powered models without weakening its established values as a brand. Still, many in JLR believe that this plan is indeed a great step for the them, a certified win-win perhaps, aside from catering the growing market for EVs, mainly they see this as one of the best chances in growing into a self-supporting brand they’ve wish to become.

If given such success, the company’s CO2 average will be reduced, somehow lessening the pressure given to Land Rover when it comes to producing electric vehicles that are not completely true to the brand.

Jaguar may soon become an EV-only carmaker.

SPECS

HOW do you reinvent a proven SUV template within just a facelift job?

If there’s any midsize SUV out there that reeks status and prominence, it’s probably the Ford Everest. Even current SUV owners see the Everest as something they'll buy if money is not a barrier, while not busting the bounds of luxury options or even bigger full-size SUVs. It's the SUV that many aspire to climb up into, backed up by its slew of incredible features and imposing looks. The problem though is that ever since the first Everest came to Zimbabwe, its rivals have caught up with it in several aspects. This has left Ford with no choice but to rekindle its position in the market.

So, how do you reinvent a proven SUV template within just a facelift job? Ford opted to change its

powertrain and added even more tech while keeping its beefy appeal. But is this enough? I got to test the 2020 Ford Everest 4x4 Biturbo Titanium trim to find out.

I did mention that the new Everest is just a facelift, right? Don’t expect phenomenal design changes in the Blue Oval’s midsize SUV. The deviations aren’t revolutionary, and that’s actually a good thing. A new three-slat grille, redesigned 20-inch alloys, and a full set of LEDs are enough to let you know that this is a new model. It works well for the brand if you ask me.

With that having been said, expect the new Everest to have a great exterior build quality that makes for a solid-looking ride.

What’s entirely new for 2020, however, would be the availability of a Diffused Silver color, which coats the media unit that I tested

here. The no-cost color option is easy on the eyes and spells premium – a perfect representation of what this car can offer.

INTERIORLikewise, the 2020 Everest mostly retains the interior styling of the model it replaces. Again, it’s a working formula for Ford so I don’t see any reason why the company has to change anything about it – except maybe for the non-tumbling second row (which makes for a challenging third-row ingress/egress) and the small cupholders that wouldn’t hold a Big Gulp.

Beyond those tiny annoyances, the materials used inside the cabin are still great, with leather-clad touchpoints and clear displays elevating your in-cabin experience – yes, even the solid door thud stays. There are also plenty of cubbyholes to

stow your things in. I particularly love the new steering wheel material that can also be found on the Ranger and Ranger Raptor. It adds to the haptic pleasure when driving this behemoth of a car.

COMFORTRoomy cabin, plush seats, and cool air-conditioning system – these are the primary things you want for a comfortable ride. The Everest does deliver in this regard, along with its seemingly softer suspension setup. It’s still bouncy, as with all midsize SUVs, but it’s more pliant and more stable than before. The cabin’s gifted with plenty of seat and legroom room for tall adults, too, although the second row would be more comfy for two and the third row’s better for children.

Given, the Everest dips and dives occasionally with ungodly driving helped by roads that are not very car worthy especially in town , compared to other pickup-based platform SUVs, it’s one of those that excel in coddling its occupants. NVH insulation’s superb , except however for the engine’s sound that creeps into the cabin even with music playing in the background.

TECHNOLOGYAs with the rest of the Ford lineup, the very thing that makes the Everest ever so great is the slew of tech features it offers. If you’re not one for gizmos inside a car, then close this page as the Everest isn’t for you. For everyone else, keep on reading.

SYNC 3 infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, offline navigation, two digital displays on the instrument cluster, power-adjustable seats, nine clear-sounding speakers, and many more – these are just a few of the things you’ll find inside the Everest.

There are also two USB ports up front (one fewer than before) and there’s a 230-V socket in the second row. The last row’s backrests fold electronically, too. You really won’t quite run out of toys to play with inside the Everest.

If there be any complaint, though, the foot-activated power tailgate only worked intermittently during our tests, which is kind of the shame given that this is the newest feature you’ll find in the Everest, along with the push-start ignition.

SAFETYLet’s start with the basics. The 2020 Everest continues with its array of safety features from its predecessor, namely seven airbags, ABS with EBD, traction control, stability control, rollover mitigation, and brake assist.

It also comes with hill start assist, hill descent control, front and rear parking sensors, a reverse camera with cross-traffic alert, and blind-spot monitors.

Now, as a top-spec Titanium 4x4 unit, the Everest has even more, such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping aids, forward collision alert, tire pressure monitoring system, and automatic emergency braking

with pedestrian detection. All of these work like a charm, except maybe for some slight delay with the proximity sensors, but that’s just about it.

DRIVING & HANDLINGA smaller engine means less spritely performance – that’s true, if you were reading this review back in 1996. For starters, the top-spec Everest gets the same engine from the Ranger Raptor: a 2.0L Biturbo diesel power plant that produces 186kW and 500 Nm of torque.

And because there are two turbos, the boost doesn’t come on late. In fact, during our tests, the boost came as early as 1,200 RPM, giving you an early satisfying pull even when coming from a standstill.

There is something to be said about the transmission, though. When you’re traveling at normal speeds and you want to hit ludicrous speeds immediately, there is somewhat of a jolt. It’s not jarring. It just lets you know that

the transmission is still there and you haven’t left it behind.

In combination with the new 10-speed transmission, though, the pull was immediately controlled and spread throughout the short-ranged gears – and that’s a good thing.

With 10 gears to play around with, acceleration was linear, even though, there were instances of over-revving wherein the engine had a tendency to stay in a gear before deciding to shift up. It wasn’t woeful, to say the least, but it could have affected the SUV’s fuel economy at some point.

The Everest’s handling was pretty okay and still among the best in its class, especially with its ultra-light steering feel that tightens up at high speeds.

Since this variant is eternally all-wheel drive, there’s a little of understeer when running speeds on winding roads. Speaking of all-wheel drive, the Everest has a 4x4 terrain management system

that works seamlessly – or at least on the sand where I tested it on.

FUEL EFFICIENCYWith a smaller engine under its hood, you might think that the Everest would return better fuel economy than its 3.2L predecessor – and you would be correct. On EDSA, the Everest Biturbo 4x4 returned 8.5 km/L, while faster paces on provincial roads at around 60 km/h registered 13.5 km/L.

On the highway, I was able to clock in 18.9 km/L with the cruise control nailed at 90 km/h.

For context, the previous 3.2L 4x4 Everest returned 16.3 km/L on the highway before. That’s a huge improvement, mind you.

VERDICTWhen all things are considered, Ford did a good job of taking a working formula and turning it into something even better.

The Everest retains its position as a choice for techie buyers who want a car that offers the most – all the while keeping its trait as a brute, off-roading SUV.

Now, can it rekindle its position in the local market? It depends on its pricing and the buyers’ capability to spend on a car.

The Everest 4x4 Biturbo Titanium Premium could sell for at least $86,000 locally, yes, a rather pricey when compared to its predecessor, more so, versus its counterparts from other brands.

But for those who can afford it, why settle for something less?

MERCEDES-BENZ and Renault are working on a more affordable minivan, just how affordable remains to be seen.

MERCEDES-BENZ T-CLASS TEASERAdding another letter of the alphabet to its classes, Mercedes-Benz seems to be working on something called the T-Class. Reports are coming in that it is based on a Renault model, most probably the Espace will lend its platform to the German automaker, but that still remains to be seen. There is a strong resemblance between the side profiles of the cars, and even with the “frameless” windows, though this is just a delicious guess on our part.

According to Mercedes, the new T-Class will be marketed towards customers with an “active family lifestyle,” and because of its Renault base, the price of this new model is also expected to be more affordable in relation to the rest of the Mercedes-Benz lineup. As stated by the brand itself, the T-Class is aimed at a more “attractive price-value ratio.”

This isn’t the first time that the German marque has commissioned the help of another brand. A few years ago the X-Class, which is based on the Nissan Navara, was made. It’s a well-known fact that Renault and Nissan share a very close relationship with one another and is perhaps the reason behind Mercedes getting another platform for use in its lineup.

Back to the car, however, Mercedes hasn’t stated all the details for now since the model is still being teased and likely not ready for the market for at the moment. What we do know is that this make will have dual sliding doors, a sizeable amount of space, and powertrains that include gasoline, turbodiesel, and even electric motor options.

This is just a teaser, no launch date was formally announced, but we can expect that more photos of this model will emerge online as its completion date draws nearer.

Versus

SADLY most truck-based SUVs spend their time confined to suburban traffic, school runs and trips to the shopping mall, their abilities stretch much further than that. Especially the 4x4 derivatives, where genuine off-road abilities are shielded beneath that veneer of luxury and sophistication. We decided to compare 3 of the top contenders in this market segment, to determine which one comes up tops.

If the truck seems to be Zimbabwe’s national vehicle, the SUV is rapidly becoming the runner-up to this title. While

many buyers prefer the smaller, car-based crossovers fielded by just about every manufacturer, there’s also now a significant demand for “proper” SUVs – the kind with a rugged, truck-like chassis and genuine off-road chops. To this end, we rounded up the 3 major contenders in this category, selected the least-expensive diesel derivatives equipped with both 4x4 and an automatic gearbox, and cast a critical eye on their attributes to find our winner.

In this comparison, we’ll consider value for money, standard-fit equipment levels, drivetrain

sophistication, and practical considerations.

If the Haval H9 were available with diesel power, it may have walked away with an immediate victory, because it outclasses all 3 of these contenders in most respects.

Its disqualification is due to its petrol engine. With sadness, it has to be sidelined. Also note that you can get pre-owned, off-road-capable SUVs for much less than these new vehicles, but that brand new squeaky clean all round new-car smell is important to many buyers (as is a fresh

service plan and warranty).

This leaves us with the 3 established players in this market segment: Ford’s Everest in mid-level 3.2TDCi 4WD XLT trim, the mid-level Mitsubishi Pajero Sport 2.4 D4 4x4, and the ever-popular Toyota Fortuner in entry-level 2.4GD-6 4x4 Auto trim.

The Isuzu MU-X is conceptually similar to these 3, but it’s rather old by now (having first arrived as a Chevy Trailblazer many years ago). We await for the 2021 model which will be launched this year.

It could be a game changer

ANALYSISPOWER, PERFORMANCE, AND DRIVETRAINSThe bare output figures point towards a victory for the Everest,

because it has the largest engine displacement (a 3.2-litre 5-cylinder), the most power (147 kW), and the highest torque output (470 Nm). In contrast, the

Pajero Sport and Fortuner both employ 2.4-litre 4-cylinder engines, to realise somewhat lower outputs: 133 kW and 430 Nm in the Mitsubishi, and 110 kW

and 400 Nm in the Toyota. There are more-powerful Everest- and Fortuner diesels available, however. The Everest can be also

be had with a new 2.0-litre bi-turbo diesel paired to a new 10-speed automatic. The Fortuner is also available in high-spec form with a 2.8-litre turbodiesel. Unfortunately, these higher-output derivatives are a lot more expensive, which would place them in a higher class than these less-expensive variants, and thus fall outside the scope of this comparison.

The output figures of these specific mid-level derivatives only tell a part of the story, though, because the Ford is by far the largest and heaviest vehicle of this trio. Its power-to-weight ratio works out at 61 W/kg, while the much lighter Mitsubishi beats it with a power-to-weight ratio of 65 W/kg. The Fortuner is the odd one out in this comparison, with the same ratio working out at only 57 W/kg, so it must stand to reason that the Fortuner 2.4GD-6 will be the slowest of this bunch.

All of 3 vehicles use torque converter automatics to send their power into their four-wheel drive systems. However, the Pajero Sport out-classes both the Fortuner and the Everest in this regard, by offering an 8-speed gearbox instead of the others’ 6-speed gearboxes. This gives a wider overall ratio spread, as well as shorter intermediate gearing, which will ensure a snappier take-off, more punch for overtaking, and more-relaxed cruising due to a taller top gear ratio.

As a result, the Pajero has the snappiest acceleration from rest and better open-road performance. The fact that its gearbox is very well-programmed to make the most of the engine’s punch is a further bonus, and ensures that the Mitsubishi walks away with an overall victory in the performance department.

ECONOMYAll 3 manufacturers claim average fuel consumption figures in the low-8 ℓ/100 km region, but real-road driving reveals another picture. The Fortuner and Pajero Sport are undoubtedly the most economical in normal driving, largely due to their lower kerb weight, but the Pajero Sport also walks away with this crown, thanks to that rather clever gearbox and a very efficient engine.

Even just going on the (very optimistic) official claims, the Mitsubishi has (marginally) the lowest average consumption, but this gap grows on road, because it’s the only one of this trio to easily register sub-10 ℓ/100 km figures in daily driving. Not super-economical by any means, but not too bad for a big, heavy vehicle of this type.

The Fortuner’s relative lack of power plays a similar role to the Everest's weight, because their engines simply must work harder to move them around. This section is another win for the Pajero Sport, simply because it’s hardware and outputs are better matched to the work its driver requires. PRACTICALITYThe Everest makes a strong comeback in the practicality stakes, with by far the largest load volumes (with or without the seats in use), and the most spacious cabin as well. That extra size has gone into creating a truly massive boot, offering a gargantuan 1050 litres with 5 seats in use (the rearmost seat fold down into the boot floor).

Being quite smaller than the Everest counts against the Pajero Sport in this department. Its rear seats also fold into the boot floor, but its loading volume maxes out at a comparatively skimpy 673 litres on offer with the third row folded away. Erect the third seating rows, and the Everest still offers a useable luggage compartment, while the others essentially end up with a little shelf behind seats number 6 and 7.

The Fortuner is rather a mixed bag in this regard, with a larger luggage compartment volume than the Pajero Sport in 5-seater mode, but with intrusive third-row seats which fold up to the sides (instead of into the floor). This restricts the cargo bay’s width, even if it lowers the load floor, and ultimately compromises practicality to a significant degree.

Overall practicality is a resounding win for the Everest: it has the largest passenger compartment and by far the most carrying capacity, no matter which seat configuration you use. The Pajero Sport comes second because its load bay is much more useable, even if there’s

slightly less space than in the Fortuner.

EQUIPMENT AND SAFETYThere isn’t much to choose from between these three contenders in terms of safety kit, because they all come with traction- and stability control, ABS with EBD, and 7 airbags. Crash testing also yielded similar results, with ASEAN NCAP testing awarding 5 stars to all three vehicles. They’re also all equipped with ISOFIX child seat anchors in their middle seating rows. Suffice to say that families are equally safe in all of these three SUVs.

Standard equipment is somewhat a different story, though. Eagle-eyed readers will have noticed that the Fortuner is a lot less expensive than the Pajero Sport and the Everest – a difference that’s partly explained by the Fortuner’s lower standard specification level. However, they all feature rear-view cameras, air-conditioning (with rear-seat vents), colour infotainment interfaces, leather upholstery, cruise control, and keyless access with pushbutton start.

The Pajero Sport and Everest both expand on this list by upgrading to climate control, and adding automatic controls for their headlights and wipers, auto-dimming interior mirrors, touchscreen infotainment interfaces with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and rear parking sensors. The Pajero Sport ups the ante with LED headlights and electric adjustment for the driver’s seat, while the Everest gets parking sensors all round and standard navigation instead.

Overall, the Pajero Sport offers the best-balanced spread of standard convenience features, and quite easily justifies its price premium over the Fortuner, just by way of the extra toys in its cabin. The Everest runs it a close second, though, thanks to those extra parking sensors (a must-have in a vehicle this size)

and navigation system.

VERDICTThe Fortuner is more expensive than the three but the worst-in-group performance and is starved of modern contraptions inside compared to the two. It’s also the least practical of this group, and has the least-sophisticated running gear. However, if you’re adamant about buying an off-road capable 7-seater 4x4 SUV, the Fortuner 2.4GD-6 is the best of the bunch – just be aware of its limitations before you sign on the dotted line.

Separating the Everest and the Pajero Sport is much more difficult, as they each have much that is commendable. They’re both very well-equipped, very capable both on- and off-road, and they offer similar value propositions. The Ford’s strongest suit is its cavernous interior and massive cargo space, although this comes with the penalty of excess weight, higher thirst, and more difficult maneuverability on account of its oversized dimensions.

Meanwhile, the Pajero Sport has less utility space than the Ford, but much better fuel consumption and sprightlier performance, and a more-refined drivetrain with the best selectable AWD system out there.

With all these things considered, the Pajero Sport makes the most sense as a dual-purpose vehicle, thanks to its more parsimonious drinking habits, easier maneuverability, excellent LED headlights (an area where the Everest could do with much improvement), and slightly lower price. It’s the best choice between these 3 opponents, unless absolute loading capacity is paramount, in which case the runner-up Ford would become the undisputed king.
