Major work on the Champlain Bridge
Installation of 48 trusses
Replacement of 11 joints
Repairs to 6 piers+
270,000+ hours workedat Champlain Bridge work sites
6
A STRUCTURE AT THE END OF ITS SERVICE LIFE THAT HAS BENEFITED FROM MAJOR CORRECTIVE MEASURES
Findings from the 2016 inspection
+ Structural integrity maintained
+ Condition of edge girders generally deficient
+ Repair work to improve components (e.g., foundation units, expansion joints)
+ New Integrated Grading System (IGS) to assess the impact of the
reinforcement systems

END OF DECK REPLACEMENT PROGRAM
Honoré Mercier Bridge
#OurProjects
+ Work blitzes completed a week ahead of schedule
+ Bridge’s lifespan extended by 75 years

REINFORCEMENT OF THE STEEL STRUCTURE
#OurProjects
+ Replacement and reinforcement of steel members
and reinforcing plates
+ Existing rivets keeping the assemblies in place are
removed and replaced with bolts
+ 80 workers at our sites 7 days a week
+ Major program to extend the service life
UPGRADES
Major project to reinforce the metal structure,
which dates back to the 1920s

#OurProjects
ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECT TO PROTECT THE RIVER
+ 95% of work complete in the west sector
+ 32 pumping wells installed along the shoreline to create a hydraulic barrier
+ Run-in of the contaminated water processing system in December

NEW BICYCLE PATHAND DEVELOPMENT OF APPROACHES
950 trees and shrubs planted to revitalize the approaches

Melocheville Tunnel
#OurProjects
TUNNEL REHABILITATION
+ New structural reinforcements
+ Heated cables added to keep ice
from forming on the pavement
+ Waterproofing of concrete
surfaces
+ New intelligent transportation
system (ITS) to keep overheight
vehicles out of the tunnel and to
detect incidents with video
analysis

Management of major work
#OurProjects
DAILY MONITORING AND COORDINATION
+ Closures optimized by combining work
+ Proactive use of traffic lights on the Champlain
Bridge to redirect heavy vehicles and limit
required closures and restrictions
+ 30% fewer traffic closures and restrictions on
our network in 2016
WORK BLITZES REALLY WORK! Work blitzes saved 7,300 hours of closure time on the
Champlain Bridge.
19
+ Ongoing communication with traffic reporters and the media,
interviews and on-site tours
+ Text message alerts for major closures or significant incidents
on our network
+ Integrated dashboard at www.JacquesCartierChamplain.ca:
live traffic conditions, planned work, traffic cameras,
major work alerts
+ Tweets about closures and information about each structure:

Bicycle path network
#OurProjects
WINTER BICYCLE PATH ON THE JACQUES CARTIER BRIDGE
+ Goal: Make the path safe for cyclists of all skill levels
+ CIMA + hired to conduct a feasibility study
+ Findings: - Complex slopes, curves, geometry and isolated areas
- Difficult weather conditions above the river (black ice common)
- No pavement surfacing on which to spread de-icing salts
- Environmental restrictions related to snow removal
- Risk of falling ice from the steel superstructure
+ Recommendation: Optimized period in the spring once
the weather allows
22
Improvements to the existing network
#OurProjects
SEPARATE PEDESTRIAN / CYCLIST AREAS
+ Pedestrians and cyclists have to share the path,
which can be difficult for both types of user
+ Pedestrians and cyclists go at very different
speeds
+ The multipurpose path is very narrow compared
to the standard
+ Developments to improve pedestrian access
starting in spring 2017
+ New safety measures deployed on the entire
network
23
Planning for 2017
#OurProjects
FEWER MAJOR CLOSURES OR RESTRICTIONS NEXT YEAR
+ Optimized work from the river or the
shore
+ Coordination with other project
authorities to limit the impact on the
network
+ Blitz required on the Champlain
Bridge for the expansion joints
+ Continuation of the steel program on
the Jacques Cartier Bridge
+ Ongoing major maintenance program
