From the PrincipalLooking back on the events and achievements of the past few weeks, I am astounded by how much we have achieved and how deeply our students, staff and parents have engaged with all that is on offer at our great school.

The first stage of the 2016 Summer sports season comes to an end this week, culminating with the Intercol competition against Scotch College and the Summer Sports Presentation Dinner on Saturday evening. At all of the sporting fixtures I have attended throughout this term I have witnessed enthusiasm, outstanding sportsmanship and fair play from all of our students, from Prep through to one ninety. I take this opportunity to thank the coaches and coordinators of summer sports for their efforts as well as Nik Sacoutis and Bill Davis for their coordination of the many teams.

At Head of the River our Pulteney Rowers represented the School with pride, with a number of crews improving their times and technique throughout the day and the season. The camaraderie and mutual support that underpins our Pulteney community were evident throughout the day; many current and past Pulteney students attended the regatta in their uniform to support our rowers and, as always, the Drum Corps drummed throughout the day. I thank Richard Sexton, Coordinator of Rowing, and the Pulteney Boat Club Committee for their dedication and also all of the student rowers, parents and coaching staff who have contributed to the season’s success.

The Rungie Cup Swimming and Sports Carnivals have provided wonderful opportunities for our younger and older students to learn from each other through healthy competition. I thank the many parents and grandparents who attended last week’s sports carnivals and also the many volunteers from the Friends of Pulteney who provided essential sustenance over the course of the two days.

When presenting certificates of effort and achievement to Kurrajong students this week, I heard of their ever-increasing understanding about the importance of having a growth mindset; they spoke of never giving up and being eager to try new challenges. I always walk away from meetings with our youngest students feeling invigorated and inspired.

Immediately following the Middle School and one ninety Sports Carnival, a group of student leaders led over 60 guests through the Centre for Senior Learning. The delegation was invited by the Association for Learning Environments (formerly CEFPI), a worldwide organisation sharing knowledge, experiences and best practices in planning, designing and building great learning environments. It was a wonderful opportunity to showcase our innovative senior learning environment to architects, planners, builders and educators. Since this event, I have received a number of emails and cards from those who attended, praising the sincerity, candour and confidence of our senior student leaders. From the ChaplainThey found the stone rolled away …. Christ is risen! He is risen indeed.

I hope everyone enjoyed some down time and relaxation with family and friends over the Easter Holy Days. I thoroughly enjoyed being part of a choir that sang at the Easter worship services.

On the Saturday I decided to watch Mel Gibson’s 2004 film The Passion of Christ’ on SBS. Gibson is quoted as saying the film is about ‘love, faith, hope and forgiveness. Jesus died for all mankind… he suffered for all of us’. The film was a box office success. It is the highest grossing religious, ‘R’ rated film and non-English language film to date. Nevertheless, there were many critics. For some it was about the anti-Semitism, or the distortion of the gospel story for dramatic effect and the unrelenting violence. Certainly for me the violence did not turn my mind to love, faith, hope and forgiveness. Rather I was captivated by the violence and the depiction of seemingly unrelenting hatred and corruption of humanity. My mind turned to when else in history was hatred given such life. The Holocaust leapt to mind (I had recently watched Schindler’s List). As did current easily inflamed negative feelings in sections of our society about terrorists, refugees and Muslim people.

The ugliness of terrorism has been thrust into our everyday lives. Yet out of Paris, Brussels and most recently Lahore, there has been a loud and concerted call for us all to refuse to allow hatred and distrust to infect and distort our minds. In the mystery of Christ’s crucifixion, death and resurrection, this call is also explicit.

In the words of Martin Luther King Jr, ‘Nonviolence means avoiding not only external physical violence but also internal violence of spirit. You not only refuse to shoot a man, but you refuse to hate him’ is another expression of this radically Christian idea. Popular commentators, for example, The Project’s Waleed Aly or Fr Rod from the Parish of Gosford, say that ‘the terrorist wants us to hate them and when we do they win … While we refuse to hate, they may take our lives but never our souls. Hate is their food, their water and the very air they need to sustain their evil mission. Deny them the poison on which they thrive and they will soon diminish.’

Although the four gospel accounts of the empty tomb famously differ from each other, in them is the truth. The Gospel, rather than being the object of truth, are the revelation of truth. We owe it to ourselves to engage our mind deeply in the mystery of what it is to be truly human. There are times when we can trust our instinct and times when we need to be prepared to challenge and question it.

Let us pray.

Goodness is stronger than evil;

Love is stronger than hate;

light is stronger than darkness;

life is stronger than death;

victory is ours through him who loved us”.

Desmond Tutu

The Magdalene Centre

The Pulteney Community continues to be generous in its regular contributions. The Magdalene Centre provides food and household resources to hundreds of disadvantaged individuals and families.

Many people are including mini toiletries. These are greatly appreciated, especially toothpaste. I know these are a great help and confidence booster to young homeless people getting ready for interviews.

Donations can be brought to the Chapel Foyer. Baskets have been labelled so that we can sort and care for your donations.

Special thanks to all the parents who supported their children on the day, and to Mark Bourchier and the parent support group for supplying the food and refreshments from under the big tent.

A huge thank you also to the Heads of House (BH – Lauren Sutter, CN –Bronte Pickett, KM – Amelia Mislov and MS – John Taylor) spent many hours preparing their teams for competition and of course we could not have events without the support of the staff both teaching and non-teaching. They committed their time to record results, measure jumps and throws, and keep time.

The Friends of Pulteney

The Friends of Pulteney have been busy already this school year, having undertaken a range of successful activities. You would all know of the successful Welcome to the New School Year event we held, and I and the Committee members have met many of you at the Parents Sub-School Information Sessions.

Other activities we have undertaken to date include:

• An informal Planning Meeting that was well attended by a cross-section of the School community, including parents (new and existing), Board members and staff. We were fortunate to have lots of ideas provided on the night and many offers of help. Thanks to everyone who came along. It will help make sure that The Friends have a successful year.

• Our first Event meeting for the year, which was held on the Thursday, 17th March, featuring a Q&A with our Principal, Mrs Anne Dunstan. This was an enjoyable evening and we now know a lot more about Anne, including that she has an interest in Ford V8 racing, and spent her early years around a southern suburbs’ winery. Those attending had the opportunity to ask Anne about a range of matters, including School funding, scholarships, experiential learning activities and future challenges and opportunities within education.

We are now organising our next Event which will be held on Thursday, April 14th. This will be a wonderful evening focused on Art, Drama and Music within the school. Make a diary note now so that you don’t miss it. Please look out for our flyer, which will provide more details.

We have set a schedule of regular Friends’ meetings and would appreciate the Pulteney community attending. Meetings start at 7.30pm and will be held in Allan Wheaton House. Please come along and hear what we have planned and become involved. Put these meeting dates in your diary now: 7 April, 19 May, 23 June, 28 July, 30 August, 6 October and 10 November.

We are also hard at work in planning for 2 Event meetings every term. As they say, ‘watch this space’.

We would love all parents and friends associated with the Pulteney community to become involved with the Friends’ activities, as little or as much as you wish, or simply to make contact and contribute your thoughts and ideas.

For current parents, don’t miss the opportunity that our activities provide to make lifelong friends and undertake some networking with others. It is not only your children that should have a great Pulteney experience!

Warm regards

Denise Keenan President Friends of Pulteney
