37. NOTE: The German system of funding proposals is very different from the American system. For example, my research, and that of my M.S.-equivalent (3) and Ph.D. students (2) in Germany has been covered since 1985 mostly by the Forsttoxikologie and the Bayreuther Institut für Ökosystemforschung (BITÖK). Proposals are submitted in terms of the actual resources necessary for the study and not in terms of monetary needs. The resources may include the space and time necessary in a growth chamber or a greenhouse, necessary instruments, types and number of chemical analyses, and number of person-hours required. Thus, it is not possible to give the actual budget of these studies. In general, the studies were mostly associated with nutrient stress of Picea abies; the results have been published with N. Katz, A. Berger and N. Buchmann. A conservative estimate of an American equivalent budget for all the studies combined is at least 250K per year (excluding overhead) from 1985 to 1989.
