Building Information Modeling - BIM

• What is BIM?• How we have implemented it.• What are the benefits?

What is BIM?• Building Information Modeling (BIM) is the process of

generating and managing building data during its life cycle. BIM uses three-dimensional, real-time, dynamic building modeling software to increase productivity in building design and construction.

• To create a BIM, a modeler uses intelligent objects (Families) to build the model.

Some Key Terms:2-D/3-D CAD: Equivalent to conventional drafting, only performed on a

computer. Unintelligent.

3-D BIM: A model that includes 3-D shape information only.

4-D BIM: A 3-D BIM that has objects and assemblies that have schedule and time constraint data added to them. (4-D = 3-D + schedule (time))

5-D BIM: A 4-D BIM that has objects and assemblies that have a cost dimension added to them. (5-D = 4-D + cost.)

Fiedler Group’s Implementation of BIM

• Completely different than AutoCAD• New software-Revit• Retrained our design team• Re-Created office standards• Stepped implementation A-S-MEP

Challenges of BIM

• Limited availability of trained designers.• Consultants that use BIM.• Availability of ready-to-use BIM libraries from vendors

and suppliers.• Full implementation of Revit Electrical.

7

Page 8: Revit and Building Information Modeling (BIM) Presentation

Benefits of BIM• Improved quality of the construction drawings (CDs).• Reduced time to prepare the initial drawings and final

CDs.• Quantities and shared properties of materials are easily

extracted for cost estimating.
