Not-Equal is a national network that aims to support collaborations between communities and network partners, from civil society, academia and industry in order to develop practical responses to issues of fairness and justice in the design and use of digital technologies in everyday lives. As such, not-equal aspires to foster inclusive innovation and fairer futures for all in our digital societies.

Challenges Digital technologies present new challenges to the pursuit of social justice in everyday life, particularly in relation to computer-supported decision making, digital security and the future of work. Not-equal asks: How can digital services and technologies help making the decisions that affect us all, fairer? What type of digital security can ensure the safeguarding of all in our digital society? What kind of digital platforms may offer fairer working opportunities and conditions to us?

Activities Not-Equal will explore these questions by funding activities that bring together the perspectives of all sections of society and help develop responses that can make our digital society work for all.

Open Events - Funding are available to run workshops, community events, design sprints or hackathons to build capacity, explore new questions, ideas or an issue related to a challenge.Open Commissioning. Funds (up to 40£k) will support research activities and collaborations that respond to challenges and questions identified as important by communities and network partners.Youth and Community Engagement. These activities aim to support public debates and ensure community groups, youth groups and school pupils’ participation in Open Commissioning process.

Network activities will lead to new understandings, ideas and technologies that better align with fairness and social justice principles. Policy reports, drawing from activities’ outputs, will be written up to guide policy making and the UK digital society at a regulatory level.

Not-Equal is a project funded by UK Research and Innovation, Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). For more information on funding opportunities and activities, contact us: [email protected] or visit www.not-equal.tech
