interview

Handbag and accessory designer Lulu Guinness OBE talks to Claire Adler about her lauded designs and the inspirational qualities of red lipstick.

ladyBag

Such are the accomplishments of quirky British designer Lulu Guinness that her handbags

have made their way into the hallowed showcases of London’s Victoria & Albert Museum’s permanent fashion collection, and onto the arms of supermodel Claudia Schiffer and screen sirens Keira Knightley and Rachel Weisz. In addition

to her store in the Royal Exchange, Lulu Guinness has boutiques (and legions of admirers) in New York, Tokyo and Osaka. In 2005, her Limited Edition Collectable handbags were exhibited over three days in Sotheby’s, and in 2006 she was awarded an OBE by the Queen.

Celebrating 20 years in British fashion last year, Lulu Guinness established a scholarship at the London College of Fashion bearing her name.

The British success story that is Lulu Guinness is a welcome reminder that you don’t need to know what you want to be when you are ten years old, in order to assure phenomenal success later in life. Despite her dazzling CV, Lulu Guinness never had any formal design training, apart from a year’s foundation course at art school.

“When I was younger I always wanted to be an actress or a singer. Designing sort of happened by accident, and it happened to be something I loved,” says Lulu who, in 1989, aged 29, left her job in video production to start her own business from the basement of a house in West London.

Today, Lulu Guinness channels her retro chic aesthetic into designing not only handbags, but also the interiors and window displays of all her shops. She has published a pop-up guidebook to style called Put On Your Pearls, Girls! with a foreword by her friend and fan, Helena Bonham Carter. Over the years, Guinness has harnessed her design talents into creating a daringly eclectic array of objects, from a range of Sky+ boxes and a bespoke bag for the Sony PSP, to bed linen, costume jewellery, sunglasses, handbag mirrors and powder compacts.

Make-up is a recurring theme for Lulu Guinness. A recent bag collection

is inspired by ‘60s model Peggy Moffit, the ritual of putting on make-up, and the colour palettes of ‘50s and ‘60s. Bags in the collection include the Eyelash tote and Stripy Bow Wanda bag.

“I am very influenced by childhood memories of my grandmother and mother, wearing matching handbags and gloves, and always red lipstick. Red lipstick finishes off an outfit and makes you look a million dollars,” says Lulu.

When she’s not beavering away on her next big things – such as her newly launched One in a Million clutch, or preparing her winter 2011 re-launches of her Limited Edition Fan Collection – with one named after Sophie Dahl – Lulu Guinness can be found scouring the Victoria & Albert Museum shop and Portobello market for inspiration and occasionally shopping at the Royal Exchange.

“The Royal Exchange has such a great selection of shops all under one roof, perfect for Christmas shopping. The huge glass ceiling is beautiful,” she says.

news

Latest NewsThe Royal Exchange is not only a luxury shopping destination located in the heart of the Square Mile; for hundreds of years, international businessmen, merchants and tradesmen have met within the columned courtyard, and this historical venue has been at the centre of the capital’s cultural and financial landscape since it was first erected in the sixteenth century.

Throughout the summer and autumn months, The Royal Exchange has revived its connection to London’s cultural pulse through affiliation with exclusive events, charity occasions, luxury brands and the arts community.

SUMMER EVENTSMay 2010 saw the arrival of 260

model elephants to iconic landmarks throughout the capital as part of The London Elephant Parade. Each miniature replica glittered with the decorative

genius of the country’s leading

artistic talent and was auctioned at the end of the event to raise funds for the conservation of Asian elephants. For one month, The Royal Exchange played host to four such creatures, designed by Cartier, Sir Paul Smith, Tarun Tahiliani and Benjamin Shine.

In June, the whimsical storytellers of 40 Winks ventured outside of their East London hideaway to delight and bewitch guests with Tales of Wonder and Amazement. Two months later, American artist Todd White launched his WOMAN Collection at Artisan Fine Art Gallery. Artworks included a mischievous cocktail party of White’s favoured ‘femmes fatales’ from Hollywood’s Martini nightlife and a portrait of Princess Diana.

FUTURE PLANSNext year, we plan to expand upon our programme of culture-led events, collaborating with the worlds of music, fashion, performing and visual arts, presenting the Royal Exchange in an entirely new light.

In addition, the Royal Exchange will take its place alongside luxury car brand Jaguar, as one of the lead sponsors for London Jewellery Week 2011; the ideal platform for both established and emerging designers. the Royal Exchange will host the January launch and subsequent events in June. In the spring we will partner with Sunday Times Style to host ‘Work & The City’ for London’s women in business – this will be a two day event held exclusively for Style’s most dynamic female readers, featuring fashion workshops, seminars and networking opportunities.

AUTUMN & WINTER CELEBRATIONSOn 14 October, the building was taken over by the Samsung Pink Ribbon Celebration, raising awareness of breast cancer in Europe. Celebrity guests joined some remarkable people whose lives have been touched by the disease to enjoy a memorable evening and performance by Alexandra Burke.

2010 will draw to a close with the annual Christmas party on 23 November where the entire venue will come alive with festive spirit, music and entertainment.

New arrivals include Bachet, the French fine jewellers, bringing classic pieces, created with white and black diamonds, to the heart of the City. We are delighted that David Bacher, the brand’s founder and renowned gemmologist chose to launch his first British boutique at the Royal Exchange. We have also welcomed Kiehl’s, the apothecary brand offering unique formulations created with natural ingredients. Both have proved exceptional additions to our unrivalled selection of luxury brands, cafés and restaurants. Opening soon we are delighted to welcome skincare and home spa experts Occo.

Think Cartier and your mind may conjure up beautifully finished Swiss watches or opulent, catwalk-worthy jewellery. But Cartier’s lesser known arm candy comes in the form of coveted, glamorous – and in some cases, historic – handbags, says Claire Adler

feature

T he Cartier Marcello handbag has become such hot property that one customer recently got his personal fixer on the phone, begging Cartier

staff to part with their last sample model of the bag in time for his wife’s 40th birthday.

“My client’s wife had seen the Marcello on all the celebrities and really wanted one,” explains Lee Coleman, managing director of Quintessentially Gifts, a division of private members concierge club, Quintessentially. “We were originally able to source the one he wanted at Cartier’s Royal Exchange store, but they ended up selling out before we were able to confirm the order. The only other one in the UK was in a different colour and size, but it wasn’t the exact bag the man’s wife was longing for. So in the end, I had to beg a Cartier team abroad for their sample piece. Because it had been a sample, it had a small scratch on the inside. We fixed this by engraving a small plaque and placing it on top of the scratch with a message saying ‘I love you’ and the client’s initials and birth date.”

The Marcello handbag was originally introduced by Cartier in 2007 and, perhaps unsurprisingly, has since become the brand’s best-selling bag. It started off as a sumptuous, chic shoulder bag, but its latest incarnation is a more casually luxurious, satchel edition that can be worn hands-free, across the body.

While the Cartier Marcello has been spotted on the likes of a multitude of beautiful people ranging from Eva Mendes, to Penelope Cruz, Fergie and Claudia Schiffer, the desirability of owning a Cartier handbag is far from new.

In the 1920s, in the wake of the First World War, women rejected social convention, donning flapper dresses, cutting their hair into bobs and smoking in public. They were comfortable holding their beauty accessories with them at all times. A tube-shaped vanity case crafted by Cartier in New York, and which has been dated as circa 1924, was one of many Cartier bags that could perhaps be better described as a jewel that carried things, rather than a handbag. Fashioned in gold, platinum and bearing stripes of Peking enamel and the initial C inscribed in diamonds, it had three compartments – including one for a lipstick holder and one for cigarettes. The buyer was the Duke of Westminster, who gave it to none other than his mistress Coco Chanel in 1924.

In 1961, Woolworth heiress Barbara Hutton, one of the wealthiest women in the world at the time, ordered a black satin Cartier evening bag topped with a single, brilliant cut diamond, navette-shaped emeralds and gold trimmings, and an ‘N’ formed with diamonds. It was a gift for Nina Mdivani, the sister of Prince Mdivani, the first of Hutton’s seven husbands. Hutton, a woman who, it can safely be said, could buy anything in the world she wanted, was so enamoured with Cartier’s panther clasp designs that she commissioned a clasp of her own in the shape of a tiger that would become her signature clasp, which explains why this particular evening bag is graced with a gold and onyx tiger clasp.

Cartier’s jewel-like handbag creations date way back to the early 20th century. The house lays claim to having invented the vanity case, with some requiring as many as 800 hours of work to make.

The Hibou evening bag in 1906 was crafted in gold and sported rose-cut diamonds, while a black velvet, gold and platinum Cartier evening bag from 1957 was encrusted with baguette and brilliant cut diamonds, carved coral, and emerald and sapphire cabochons. Many such Cartier bags reveal exotic influences; Egypt is portrayed in one in a frieze of young girls amid the papyrus, a detail of China can be found depicted in a black and red enamelled frame, and India in a clutch bag – often called a minaudière – decorated with pearls and embroidered with pendants in the style of Cartier’s colourful Tutti Frutti jewellery.

Today, a mood of glamour for every day has given rise to a new generation of women who continue to assemble accessories that are far more than the finishing touches to their outfits, with accessories central to creating and curating a look. With fans in the form of artists, entrepreneurs and fashionistas spanning the globe from Korea, to Sao Paulo, Paris and Berlin, the Marcello addresses a more blasé, nonchalant, yet perennially stylish kind of luxury.

Woolworth heiress Barbara Hutton was so enamoured with Cartier’s panther clasp that she

commissioned her own tiger design, which explains why the modern Marcello bag is graced with a gold and onyx tiger clasp

Over a hundred years after Louis Cartier produced his first ever watch for a Brazilian aviation pioneer, the luxury watch and jewellery maker has unveiled its first ever watch with inner workings entirely crafted by Cartier, says Claire Adler

Perfect timing

a department in the Cartier manufacture is called the Think Tank, in homage to that original watch.

Thanks to the dedicated team of 20 people behind the creation of the new watch throughout its development, design, prototyping, production and testing stages, the Calibre de Cartier pays particular attention to accuracy and durability. A pawl system makes for maximum winding efficiency, while ceramic ball bearings at the centre of the rotor ensure shock resistance, and the power reserve is 48 hours. The very insides of the watch are beautiful too, even if most people, including the wearer, may never even see some of them. The rotor and upper bridges of the mechanism are decorated with the exacting standards of the traditional Côtes de Geneve engraving, polishing and finishing techniques.

With its clean design, bold bezel detailing and four horns that embrace the shape of the wrist for extreme comfort, the watch seems to have resolutely sporty undertones.

You could say Cartier has been in the business of sports watches since its very beginnings. In 1904, Louis Cartier’s Brazilian friend Alberto Santos-Dumont, known as the father of aviation, wanted a watch he could wear while flying, and the Santos was born. The Calibre de Cartier pays homage to this watch in its name, the Calibre 1904, harking back to Cartier’s first ever timepiece.

When in 1933 the Pasha of Marrakesh wanted a waterproof watch he could go swimming in, he called on Cartier. And more recently, the Cartier Roadster watch, designed to be worn while driving, acknowledged by design junkies for enabling you to change straps with a simple manoeuvre.

If it’s hard to consider the Calibre de Cartier a true sports watch because of its elegant and refined aesthetic, what is indisputable is the fact that it is testament to Cartier’s commitment to a tradition of pioneering research. It’s a watch that’s perfect for work and robust enough to withstand a workout at the gym. And just in case, it’s water resistant to 30 metres.

In recent years, high-end watchmakers have been falling over themselves to prove their in-house credentials, drawing attention to their capability to

create entire watches under one roof – more often than not, in factories, often called manufactures, nestled in the chocolate box Swiss mountain villages of Le Locle or La Chaux de Fonds.

The trend is no accident. Several years ago, the Swatch Group, which owns a multitude of luxury watch brands, announced it would no longer be supplying mechanical components to watchmakers outside its own stable.

One of the newest results of this development is the Calibre de Cartier, the first own-manufacture, self-winding mechanical watch from the house that has historically brought forth some of the most memorable and well-loved watches on the market – from the Pasha, originally commissioned by a Moroccan royal with a penchant for swimming, to the iconic Tank, conceived to honour Allied defenders of France. Today,

The ultimate gift for a loved one this Christmas and a keepsake that can be treasured forever, make time stand still with the Royal Exchange’s selection of classic watches for him and elegant timepieces for her. According to Baselworld (the world’s most prestigious watch show), trends for this season include ‘sober and slim’ designs for men’s watches. Investment pieces are back in fashion, and the big names are pushing a classic, understated and timeless form that will remain in favour for decades to come. In contrast, female fashionistas all over the City are favouring monochrome designs with materials such as ceramic, graphite and silicone alongside the customary precious metals.

Under a very bright light indeed at the Artisan Fine Art gallery in London’s Royal Exchange has been Hollywood artist Todd White, who

specialises in portraits of the female sex, some famous and some not at all, but he paints each one from detailed observations and recordings through his various encounters with them. Taking centre stage in his exhibition, Woman is his new portrait of the late Diana, Princess of Wales, whom he chose to paint because he found her, “A true inspiration who made a huge impact worldwide”. This painting is in London for a brief period, for it is to be auctioned to raise funds for her memorial fund on 1 July next year.

Lily Allen has also achieved world renown at a very young age, as Diana did, and the many aspects - sometimes secret – of female personalities such as hers attract White like a magnet. He is a consummate people watcher and his portraits are so distinctive because they give us a realistic likeness while revealing something intimate about the subject through their expressions and poses. It’s as if we have caught them off-guard, like a wandering guest at a dinner party. This is reflected in Temporary Remedy, the painting which bears a striking resemblance to Allen; White's interest in the emotional side of the female psyche is evident in this name choice and in several other similar paintings, such as Stronger and Don't Say Goodbye.

In The Wounds She Leaves Behind, we have another unknown subject with a likeness for a famous femme fatale – in this case the actress Scarlett Johansson. The tussled hair, slightly déshabillé appearance and unwavering stare, accentuated by smudged eye make up, give her all the features of a strong yet vulnerable woman; most men would do well to avoid her in this emotional frame of mind but, of course, they can't resist her type and nor can Todd White. Madonna, Catherine Zeta-Jones and P. Diddy own his original work and this exhibition of captivating and very good quality portraits looks certain to expand that group of famous collectors. For those with smaller designer wallets, signed, limited edition prints of the Woman collection are available for less than £500.

For generations, the success of a portrait painter has been measured by the status of the people he paints, royal sitters generally propelling him to the number one spot. In today’s Western society, the cult of celebrity defines success as much as royalty, so accomplished portraits of both royals and celebrities direct the spotlight on the artists who paint them.

about

1. In 1892, 24 large murals were created on the inside ambulatory of the Royal Exchange. These paintings measure 22 ft x 11 ft and illustrate how the Royal Exchange has played an integral role in City life for more than four centuries. Each was painted on canvas using a rare spirit fresco technique, which was then mounted on slate. The first image was executed by Sir Frederic Leighton, President of the Royal Academy, and depicts Phoenicians trading with Early Britons on the coast of Cornwall.

2. The Royal Exchange retailers offer corporate gifting services and will deliver to any desk in the Square Mile. See the store directory at the back of this magazine to find out how we can save you time.

3. The Royal Exchange was officially launched on 23 January 1571 by Queen Elizabeth I, who awarded the building its Royal title. The structure that stands today was opened 273 years later by Queen Victoria.

4. The Royal Exchange quarterly e-newsletter details exclusive offers, product launches, competitions and event news. Visit www.theroyalexchange.com to register.

5. Sir. John Gresham’s crest, ‘The Gresham Grasshopper’, was a prominent part of the original building design. It now features as a weather vane and can be seen perched on top of the building.

6. The Royal Exchange can host anything from an intimate gathering for 20 people up to a celebration for 500 guests. In 2010, the building was the venue of choice for a number of prestigious events, including the Samsung Pink Ribbon Celebration, alongside numerous weddings and corporate dinners. Visit www.theroyalexchange.com for more information.

7. The Royal Exchange has been rebuilt twice; the framework was completely destroyed by the Great Fire of London of 1666 and again in 1838, following a blaze in the Lloyd’s room.

8. Traditionally, the Royal Exchange has been a bolthole for traders to meet and conduct business. However, a theatre company was formed within the courtyard at the outbreak of World War II, which went on to become the celebrated Mermaid Theatre.

9. In 2011 The Royal Exchange will launch an in-house lifestyle consultancy, offering personal shopping and styling. For more information please sign up to the newsletter or visit www.theroyalexchange.com.

10. The Royal Exchange will be a lead sponsor of London Jewellery Week 2011, supporting both established and emerging talent through a series of events and activities.
