PREFACE

This history of David Roe of Flushing, Long Island, and some of his descendants had its inception about twenty years ago, when the compiler sought information

* relating to the lineage of his mother's grandfather, Charles Roe, who died near South Bend, Ind., Aug. 18, 1838. Before the lineage was clearly established a num¬ ber of clues were investigated and considerable material relating to the early history of the Roe families in America was secured. As there was no history of the Flushing Roes and their descendants in print it seemed desirable to extend the scope of the investigation and to prepare an account of this branch of the family for pub¬ lication. To this end public records have been examined and information from members of the family, now widely scattered, has been secured. In preparing the history for publication it has been decided to limit this edition to the first six generations. It is hoped that a second edition will be issued in the not distant future which will include not only the later history of the family, but also additional information relating to the first six genera¬ tions. All persons having additional information, or corrections, are earnestly requested to communicate with the compiler.

In this connection attention is called to the fact that a history of the descendants of John Roe of Brookhaven, Long Island, is in preparation. Members of this branch of the Roe family are invited to send copies of their records to the undersigned so that the history, when pub¬ lished, may be reliable and as complete as possible.

To the many correspondents who have manifested their interest in this family record the compiler wishes to express his appreciation for their cooperation.

Clarence A. Torrey. 94 Thetford Ave., Dorchester Center, Boston, Mass. January 1, 1926.

DAVID ROE AND DESCENDANTS 1 DAVID1 ROE,* immigrant ancestor of one branch

of the Roe family in the United States of America, was an early settler at Flushing, Long Island, where he is mentioned in the tax or “rate list” of 1675. Owing to the destruction of the Flushing land records by fire in 1789, the year in which he became a resident of the town is unknown, but it was probably about 1666. His wife Mary was living in 1698, when the. New York Provincial Census was taken, but she is not mentioned in his will, dated Dec. 26, 1702. He was a carpenter and farmer. He was among the well-to-do citizens of Flushing, own¬ ing lands, farm stock, carpenter’s tools, and two slaves, “Sam” and “Hannah.” He died before July 12, 1707, when his will was proved.

Children: i Elizabeth,2 b. about 1668; m. about 1688, Samuel Tatem of

Flushing'. They had four children. She d. Dec. 4, 1699, according to the records of the Society of Friends. He m. (2) Mary Southwick. Dec. 13. 1701.

3 iii John, b. about 1672; m. (1) - -; m. (2) Grace (-) Ward.

iv Mary, b. about 1677; she was single in 1698, when the census was taken, but m. before Dec. 26, 1702, - Smith, according to her father’s will.

2 NATHANIEL2 ROE (David1), born about 1670. probably at Flushing, N. Y.; married (1) about 1694, Elizabeth -; after her death he married (2) Mercy (-) Price, a widow, whose daughter Susanna became the wife of his son William.

Nathaniel Roe inherited all of his father’s lands in Flushing and he probably added to his holdings by pur¬ chase. His will, dated May 25, 1726, proved Aug. 2, 1738, mentions his wife Mercy, his five sons and his wife’s

"He was probably a brother of John Roe of Brookhaven, Long Island, who also named his sons John and Nathaniel and daughters Elizabeth and Mary. A history of the John Roe branch of the family is in preparation. Attention is also called to the fact that a revised and enlarged edition of the history of the David Roe line may be published. See Preface for further information.

daughter Susan or Susanna Price. His children were probably all by his first wife.

Children born in Flushing: 4 i David,3 b. about 1695; m. Deborah -. 5 ii Nathaniel, b. about 1702; m. Mary -. 6 iii William, b. about 1705; m. Susanna Price.

iv John, b. about 1709; living- in 1726, when his father made his will.

7 v Benjamin, b. about 1712; m. Ruth Miller.

3 JOHN- ROE (David1), born about 1672, probably at Flushing, N. Y.; he bought land in Gloucester County, N. J., Oct. 1, 1696, and another tract, Oct. 5, 1696; re¬ moved to New Jersey before March 1, 1697-8, when he is mentioned as a resident of Gloucester County. Apr. 2, 1710, when his wife Grace was baptized in the First Presbyterian Church of Philadelphia, she is called “Grace Roe wife of John of Cohanzy,” from which it appears that he then resided in Salem County, N. J. He returned to Gloucester Township, Gloucester Co., N. J., before Aug. 10, 1711, when his will, was made. He died before Oct. 9, 1711, when the inventory of his personal estate was taken.

The name of John Roe’s first wife* is unknown. His second wife was Grace (-) Ward, widow of William Ward of Upton, Gloucester County, N. J. The second marriage took place between Sept. 1, 1702 and Apr. 2, 1710. The widow of John Roe lived in Evesham Township, Burlington County, N. J., for a number of years, but returned to Gloucester County before her death. She died intestate before Jan. 25, 1758, the date of her probate.

Children mentioned in John Roe’s will: 8 i John,3 b. about 1694; m. Elizabeth Siex (Sikes or Sykes?).

ii Benjamin. iii Deborah. iv Susanna. v Uriah.

9 vi Henry, b. 1705; m. Hannah Cheesman.

*John Roe, in his will, Aug. 10, 1711, named his “trusty friend John Hedger” as one of his executors. David Roe, son of John Roe, in his will, Feb. 14, 1783, appoints his “Trusty Friend and Relation John Hedger” as one of his executors. The John Hedger mentioned by David Roe appears to have been a grandson of the John Hedger who was living in 1711. There was a Hedger family at Flushing at an early date. These records seem to indicate that one of John Roe’s wrives was a Hedger or related to the Hedger family.
