Background• library at Huddersfield (335K items) and
LRC at Barnsley (8K items)• 3M self service units since 1998• regularly got >80% of all circ transactions
via self issue• speed of transaction was an big issue• often had long queues waiting to issue or
return items
May 2007 Barcelona - RFID 3
RFID• went out to tender Q1 2006• shortlisted 5 suppliers• contract awarded to Intellident in May
2006• stock conversion completed in under 11
weeks (approx 5,500 items per day)• 32 students assisted with the conversion
using 4 workstations• one group managed to convert 2,200
items in a single day (6 items per minute?)
May 2007 Barcelona - RFID 4
RFID• several thousand “Checkpoint” metal
plates were removed from stock• 80 “check” pens were used to mark the
converted stock• service launched on 14/Sep/2006• £60 of fines collected via self service in
the first 24 hours• conversion identified 18,000 missing items• moved to using lockable CD / DVD cases
May 2007 Barcelona - RFID 5
Problems
• Art books with metallic covers• removal of “Checkpoint” plates
sometimes damaged the book• small number of conversion “miss-
scans”• although we already had SIP2 for the
3M units, we had to purchase new SIP2 software from SirsiDynix
