On 25 March 2013, the Grade Ten, Eleven and Twelve Visual Arts and Design learners were fortunate to be graced with the presence of five engaging speakers at this year’s Art and Design Seminar. Each speaker presented their work, ideas and experiences in a thought-provoking and individual way. Artist Andrew Putter kick started the seminar with his interesting exploration of the interaction and relationships between the Dutch and Khoi khoi youth of the 1600’s through his Sketch As-sembly collaborative project. Design Indaba co-ordinator Kelly Berman spoke eloquently about different designers work and the organising of the Expo. Photographer turned wallpaper designer Rob-in Sprong spoke about Lomo photography and how he applied the technique to developing his original design brand. After our most gratifying and scrumptious break, inspirational clothing designer Suzaan Heynes who had flown from Joburg to be with us, held everyone’s attention with her stunningly architectural garments made of sustainable cork. Thanks to Kezia, Jamie and Shana-Lee for so comfortably modelling these creations. T he seminar started on a good note and con-tinued to be interesting all the way through. Conceptual artist Ed Young ended the seminar with a bang. He was a most amusing and con-troversial speaker and despite it being the end

of a long day, there was not a person whose attention he did not have. The seminar was both extremely educational and enjoyable. No idea was repeated and there was something which appealed to each individ-ual. There is no way to describe how fortunate we are to attend a school such as ours with privileges such as this. We are extremely grate-ful to our devoted teachers for making it happen so successfully each year. Saaliha Jaffer, Grade 11

Debating Update

Both our Senior and Junior teams lost their debates against Springfield. Although the Senior team (Robyn Fester, Tumelo Moloto and Nicola Cilliers) put forward some very good points in opposing the motion that: “This house would integrate men and women in sports teams”, their arguments re-quired more analysis and depth to convince the adjudicators. The Juniors (Raeesah Shaik, Jarita Kassen and Cynthia Augustine) also failed to back up their arguments in opposing the motion that: “This House supports a decline in nuclear pow-er”. The final debate in the Rotary League (round 5) will take place on Monday 06 May against

Cedar House (Seniors) and St Cyprians (Juniors). The Juniors will debate the motion: “This House would criminalise doping in sports”. In line with Round 4, the Seniors will receive their motion 60 minutes before the debate. We wish our Senior Team members: Nicola Cilliers (captain), Robyn Fester, Tumelo Moloto, Katherine Harris and Jarita Kassen, all the best on their participation in the National Girls Schools Festival from 25 to 28 April. RGHS came second in 2012 and this year’s team will be determined to uphold the high standard set by the school in this competition over the past years.

Rotary Round 4 versus Springfield on Monday 15 April

On Tuesday the 26th of March, the Grade 11s of 2013 set off on a highly anticipated leader-ship camp at Mizpah near Grabouw. We were all relieved to find we were staying in comforta-ble chalets and not tents like the many grade 11s before us. The Lead for Life leadership programme start-ed almost immediately on our arrival and we were divided up into teams, giving us all an op-portunity to work with girls we hadn’t worked with before. The next two action-packed days were filled with many team-building exercises such as ca-noe building, obstacle courses and solving vari-

ous puzzles, all of which tested our leadership skills and pushed us out of our comfort zones. We also received advice and wisdom from two motivational speakers, and after a long and tir-ing day of activities, we enjoyed a wonderful walk up to a nearby river where we were all able to cool off and spend some time with our peers. Over all, the Grade 11 leadership camp was a wonderful learning and bonding experience, as well as a lot of fun for all the girls that attended, thanks to the excellent leaders and teachers. Professional photographer Ms Kristina Stojiljkovic, spent 9 April on the campus of Rus-tenburg High School for Girls shooting various portraits which will be used for the 2013 school magazine, press releases and the official school archives. Editor of the Rustenburg school magazine, Mr Adrian Skelly, has worked with Ms Stojiljkovic before on the Miss South Africa pageants for Sun International in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012. “Kristina is always my first choice when it comes to looking for a photographer with an expert eye,” he explained. “She enjoys concep-tualising and working to a brief. Kristina is particularly adept at understanding the needs of the client. In this case, we wanted portraits which showed the sitters as warm, ap-proachable and friendly.” Ms Stojiljkovic has previously completed photo-graphic work for Rustenburg High School for Girls. She has taken several of the official por-traits of school management in prior years and, in 2011, shot the successful wraparound front cover image, featuring six Rustenburg school-girls, of the school magazine. The creative theme upon which the 2013 school magazine is being based is the five Rus-tenburg house colours: Marchand (yellow),

Michiel Vos (red), Innes (blue), Cambridge (green) and Bleby (pink). Mr Skelly said that the inspiration for this came from watching the festivities and cheer of the Inter-house Gala on 1 February when these five bold colours clashed in the outfits worn by the girls. The system, according to which girls of the school are assigned houses, is also being reconsidered. The school leaders (Ms Bekker, Ms Schnetler, Ms Blackshaw, Mr Broster), the Chairman of the School Governing Body (Mr Abdoll), the Su-perintendent of Erinville (Ms van Dyk) and the Grade Heads (Ms Kleynhans, Ms Wallace, Ms Gardiner, Ms Pretorius and Ms Swanson) were all briefed well beforehand and asked to wear the bold colours of one or more of Rustenburg’s houses. Ms Stijiljkovic complemented their chosen out-fits by looking for backdrops on the school grounds which naturally also revealed the bold houses colours. Also photographed on the day were the Head-girl (Kate Vlok), the Headgirl of Erinville (Robyn Paterson), the Head of the RCL (Joycelyn Fos-ter), the Pupil Editor of the school magazine (Tamsin Metelerkamp) and the 2013 school magazine front cover artist (Kiana Neethling). Ms van Dyk, the Superintendent of Erinville, made a particularly sentimental effort in prepar-ing for her official portrait. She chose to wear pink and was photographed against a burst of pink blooms. Ms van Dyk said that the Erinville girls would appreciate the meaning of this ges-ture. Originally pink was the colour assigned to those girls who lived in the boarding house. To-gether they still sing the lyrics of “We all live in the Pink Boarding House” at each Inter-house Gala. Miss Brodie has her portrait printed

Rustenburg High School for Girls originally presented “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie” (by Jay Presson Allen, adapted from the novel by Muriel Spark) in 1996. Now, 17 years later, the school is again rehearsing to take this same production to its Kemp Hall stage. “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie” will run from 13 – 17 Au-gust. The plot is about a flamboyant and eccentric History teacher, Miss Jean Brodie, who is a staff member at a staunchly conservative ficti-tious girls’ school, Marcia Blaine. The character of the male Art teacher, Mr Teddy Lloyd, is ab-solutely infatuated with Miss Brodie. No matter whose portrait he paints, the end result always bears a striking resemblance to Miss Brodie. This angers and frustrates schoolgirl Sandy, who eventually plots her once beloved teach-er’s demise. The role of Miss Jean Brodie is being played by Robyn Paterson (Grade 12). Sandy is being played by Morgan Shelly (Grade 11). Their love interest, Mr Teddy Lloyd, is being played by Ed-ward Bester of Rondebosch Boys’ High School. The numerous painted portraits, all bearing a striking resemblance to Miss Brodie, are there-fore pivotal to an understanding and apprecia-tion of the plot. The fact that Mr Lloyd is unable to paint her is what motivates Sandy to betray Miss Brodie. Director and Head of the Dramatic arts De-partment, Mr Adrian Skelly, decided to ap-

proach various talented former Visual Arts learners of Rustenburg. These recent artistic ‘Old Girls’ of the school were excited when they heard about the project and tackled the brief with enthusiasm. The portraits were all based on a photograph of Robyn Paterson dressed in one of her Miss Brodie costumes. Julia Kabat (Matric 2011) presented a deliber-ately distorted portrait of Miss Brodie. Her inten-tion was to try and capture some of the infuria-tion and passion which Mr Lloyd may have felt towards his subject. Julia is currently a Fine Arts student at Michaelis, UCT. Hannah Mac-Millan (Matric 2011) adopted an altogether dif-ferent approach. Her Miss Brodie is poised, with marble-like skin, but crowned with a mop of flaming hair to suggest Miss Brodie’s powerful presence. Mieke Loubser (Matric 2012), who was study-ing Fine Art at the University of Stellenbosch, offered a dark, brooding and enigmatic Miss Brodie. In Mieke’s interpretation Miss Brodie appears troubled and haunted. The Miss Brodie portrait collection also in-cludes a painting submitted by a current pupil of Rustenburg High school for Girls. Ursula Hardie (Grade 10) rendered a photo-realism take on the subject. The cast of “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie” have been rehearsing for 11 hours each week and are excited to show the results of their ef-forts in the third term this year.

Kiana Neethling designs cover

for 2013 School Magazine Kiana Neethling’s illustra-tion for the front cover of the 2013 school magazine took her about three weeks to complete, largely be-cause of the technique and medium within which she worked. Stippling is the cre-ation of shadows and filling of negative space using thousands and thousands of dots. Kiana, who studies Visual Arts with Ms Jackie Cham-bers, says that drawing the academic gown was the most challenging as its many creases and folds required pains-taking attention. She feels that the image represented Rustenburg well because, especially with the addition of the colours of each of the five houses, it “pops” and con-veys vibrancy and happiness. The original drawing was in black and white. Kiana is flattered that her artwork is also being used as a basis for the internal cover pages of this magazine. Kiana finds it difficult to sum up her own artistic style be-cause, she says, she prefers to experiment and explore with different approaches. This, she believes, is what sup-ports the growth and development of art.

FRANSCHHOEK CHAMBER MUSIC WORKSHOP APRIL 2013

It was the 23rd annual Chamber Music Work-shop this year and four Rustenburg musicians were fortunate enough to have successfully au-ditioned for the week-long series: Kirsten Bu-chanan (violin), Stéphanie Lawrenson (violin), Samantha Ma (clarinet) and Nicola McLachlan (cello). All the players were split into groups at the Workshop and given music to rehearse, cul-minating in two concerts at which these works were then performed. The participants learned a great deal and returned home greatly inspired and ready to attend the next year’s course. Stéphanie Lawrenson, C1

JS BACH ST MATTHEW PASSION Congratulations and thanks to the members of the Chamber Choir who performed in Part I of JS Bach’s St Matthew Passion at Bishops Chapel on Good Friday. Conductor, Dr Barry Smith had this to say: `Thank you for the choir’s contribution to the success of last night’s performance – without your and their help it would have been impossible to perform the work as the ripieno choir is essential to Bach’s huge musical concept.’ (Worth noting, Peter Sellars, one of the Rolex Mentors who was a participant (along with author Wole Soy-inka and William Kentridge) in the recent Rolex Mentors and Proteges’ programme at the Bax-ter Theatre has directed a stage version of this work with Sir Simon Rattle and the Berlin Phil-harmonic, which has been nominated for a BBC 2013 DVD award.)
