RENO GAZETTE-JOURNAL/RGJ.COM TUESDAY, JULY 16, 2013 7D Aces Ballpark, which hosts Wednesday’s Triple-A All-Star Game, is one of the newest and nicest ballparks in the country. But the $50 million stadi- um, which is wedged between a train trench and the Truckee River in downtown Reno, isn’t the only Triple-A stadium with an interesting back story. Here is a look at what makes10 other Triple-A stadi- ums special. McCoy Stadium (Paw- tucket Red Sox): The oldest Triple-A ballpark, McCoy Stadium was completed in 1942. In 1981, the longest game in professional baseball history was played here, a 3-2 PawSox win over Rochester in 33 in- nings. Future Hall of Famers Wade Boggs and Cal Ripken Jr. both played in the game. Werner Park (Omaha Storm Chasers): Opening in 2011, Werner Park in the new- est of the 30 Triple-A stadi- ums. It cost $36 million to build ($14 million less than Aces Ballpark, which opened in 2009). Before the park’s opening, the team played at Rosenblatt Stadium, home of the College World Series. Coca-Cola Field (Buffalo Bisons): The stadium has the largest capacity of all minor- league teams at 18,025. It hosted the first Triple-A All- Star Game in 1988 as well as last year’s All-Star Game, the 25th edition. The Goo Goo Dolls’ music video “There You Are” also was shot at the stadium in 1991. Durham Bulls Athletic Park (Durham Bulls): While this ballpark isn’t the one seen in the 1998 movie “Bull Dur- ham,” it does have a bull sign mounted above the 32-foot- high Blue Monster in left field as an ode to the movie. The sign jokingly reads, “Hit Bull Win Steak. Hit Grass Win Salad.” Chukchansi Park (Fresno Grizzlies): The ballpark, named after Chukchansi Gold Resort & Casino, had a record attendance of 16,125 in 2012. The catch is that game was a soccer match between Mex- ican clubs América and Chia- pas, besting the baseball at- tendance record of 14,084 fans for a Grizzlies-Giants tilt. AutoZone Park (Memphis Redbirds): This is the most expensive Triple-A ballpark, ringing in at a cost of $80.5 million when it was built in 2000 (or $107 million in 2013 dollars after inflation). Taco- ma’s Cheney Stadium is the cheapest Triple-A stadium ($940,000 in 1940 and since renovated four times). Victory Field (Indianapo- lis Indians): This is the most patriotically named Triple-A ballpark. The Indians’ old stadium was named Victory Field from 1942-67 after the U.S. victory in World War II. It was later renamed Bush Field, but when the old stadi- um shut its doors in 1996, its replacement got the name Victory Field once again. Knights Stadium (Char- lotte Knights): This is the swan song season for Knights Stadium, which opened in 1990 but will be replaced by a new stadium (BB&T Ball- park) in 2014. Charlotte at- torney Jerry Reese filed sev- en lawsuits to block the new stadium, hoping instead to woo a major-league team to town. Herschel Greer Stadium (Nashville Sounds): This stadium has the coolest score- board in baseball. It’s a115- foot-long black guitar with red, yellow and white trim behind the left-field fence. The line score runs on the guitar’s neck. The park also has witnessed eight no-hit- ters, including back-to-back no-nos in 1988. Security Service Field (Colorado Springs Sky Sox): The stadium’s elevation of 6,531 feet makes it the highest professional baseball park in North America. Despite the elevation, this park isn’t home to the single-season record for homers by a player. That is held by Ron Kittle, who hit 50 homers with the now-defunct Edmonton Trap- pers in1982. The Trappers played at Telus Field (eleva- tion roughly 2,220). SCHEDULE TODAY » Media Day/Workout Session at Aces Ballpark, 1-3 p.m. This event is open to the public.
