What is a Rhetorical Précis? Overview: In order to concisely describe the argument and context an author presents in a text, academic writers sometimes use a format called the rhetorical précis.

This form is a highly structured four-sentence paragraph that highlights the essential rhetorical elements in any text.

The précis includes the name of the speaker/writer(s), the context or situation in which the text is delivered, the major assertion, the mode of development or support of the main idea, the stated and/or apparent purpose of the text, and the relationship between the writer(s) and the audience.

Thinking through your lyrics…

That a moment to read through the lyrics. No you cannot listen to it yet if you have it on a phone or Ipod.

Think about, then answer the following as you read:

What is the song about? What is the theme?

How do you know that is what the song is about?

What does the song make you realize, think, or feel?

Now think about the sound of the song and the words. What is the tone of the words and the music? How does it connect with you? How might it connect with someone not familiar with it?
