About Ruth Lane Uy Asmundson
She is a Filipina; the former mayor of an American city (2004-2006); anawardee of the Pamana ng Pilipino Award given by Malacañang in 2006 for Filipino individuals and organizations overseas; the recipient of several awards in the U.S. as well as in the Philippines; and shall have been mayor again in July of 2008.
Her name is Ruth Asmundson. Graduated valedictorian from her elementary school, she shone as the best and the brightest. She received a college scholarship at Adamson University where she took up Chemistry. Her natural grace and friendliness caught the attention of President George Lucas Adamson himself and she became a personalfriend of the Adamson’s. She joined organizations in and outside of the University and even formed a sorority in college.
At the prompting of one of her favorite professors, Ruth applied for aFulbright Scholarship and successfully obtained it. She soon found herself a student at Wilkes-Barre, PA in 1966 where she received her Master’s degree in Chemistry. Then she proceeded to the University of California in Davis for her Ph.D in 1968.
Ruth’s public service in Davis went off to an inauspicious start withvolunteer work at Valley Oak Elementary School where her children attended. For 26 years starting in 1973, she served as her husband’s law office manager. She also became the International House’s first office manager. Ruth then served in the Davis Board of Education for 10 years. Here she developed a reputation for reading reports thoroughly, attending meetings religiously, and for answering e-mail at night from average of 80 emails a day.
The desire for what people need is exactly what Ruth Asmundson is all about. In her two years as mayor, she has established four Sister-City relations with Asian Cities including two Philippine cities, brought in big business and retail, developed a comprehensive affordable housing policy and transformed downtown Davis into a locale for culture and arts to flourish.
She is currently Mayor pro-tempore after winning reelection to the City Council in the summer of 2006 and Mayor again for 2008-10. She joins a select of Davis mayors who have served the City for at least two terms. She was recognized in 2007 as one of “100 most influential Filipina women in the US.”

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENTRHO OMICRON FRATERNITY & SORORITY
ALUMNI ASSOCIATION, INC.
As we celebrate our 45th year anniversary, a journey to the past with our founders and senior members will bring us to the time of memorable recollections :
A time when we thought the seemingly insurmountable challenges in our bid to be accepted as members were beyond our capability to overcome but we did overcome;
A time when the feeling of overwhelming euphoria abounds among us during and after the ceremonial final acceptance as Rho Omicronians;
A time when the feeling of camaraderie and brotherhood have never been more intense ;
A time when being active in school as a Rho Omicronian added meaning to us in our lives as students.
In recent years, we held get-togethers and rekindled the same spirit of camaraderie and brotherhood ,occasionally, on birthdays and when Balikbayan brods or sis are around… for still the bond exist and continues to persist among us. This bond seems to have become deeper as together we worked on the preparation of the momentous event – the 45th year of our existence.
Truly, we can no longer turn back the hands of time but the spirit of camaraderie and brotherhood with the memories are treasures and legacies, we can share with the young and the next generation of Rho Omicronians. The RHO OMICRON SOCIETY ,our student chapter is the next generation who, I believe, just like us , are capable of replicating our deeds and do even more because they have us as their pillars of strength and support.
Indeed , life is like a river which continues to flow but without the verdant life around and the tender care to sustain its pristine purity and sterling usefulness , it is dead.
Rho Omicron is certainly alive like an active flowing river, full of life and caring as it traverses rugged terrains and pathways ,helping in making life better . Yes, let us all take this challenge and be ready to assume a significant role as active, upright and responsible members of RHO OMICRON and as citizens of our country .
MABUHAY ANG RHO OMICRON!!!

off when in the early 1980’s she participated in the development of a novel DNA amplification technology widely known as PCR (Polymer Chain Reaction). PCR is a method for amplifying DNA sequence into a million fold copy. PCR has revolutionized from the field of forensics, identifying criminal and sex offenders, medical diagnostics tools used to identify people who could be at risk to certain generic diseases, pharmaceutical drug development, agricultural for bioengineering field crops against weather or infestation resistance and the food industry for identifying organisms causing food contamination are some examples.
It was in 1985 when she first used the DNA technology in forensic case in a US court. On May 25, 1989, her photo appeared in Valley Times, a California USA newspaper with the article “DNA as a New Legal Tool in Solving Crimes.” She is a co-inventor in a number of patents related to genetic studies, co-author in book chapters, has presented and co-authored in over 200 abstracts that have been presented in international and US conferences. She is known as one of the genetic experts by the scientific community and also known for her Diabetes Research Work. She is currently a Principal Scientist at Roche Molecular System heading a research group of 12 people and manages several projects.. In 2004, she received the Roche Presidential Award.
Dory Bugawan has an extensive publication record, including publications in many leading journals.
With her very impressive accomplishments, Dory Bugawan is a real STALWART in the field of BIOTECHNOLOGY. But for Dory Bugawan, it takes more than these accomplishments to be a realAdamsonian. It takes social responsibility. With that she always has a ready hand helping scientist from different countries, especially for doctors from the Philippines. Just recently she donated instrument, and supplies to different universities and institutions in the Philippines, including Adamson University.
Teodorica L. Bugawan was the first to use the DNA technology in a forensic case that was admitted in US court. She is a Filipina and an Adamsonian. Her mile long list of professional achievements started after she earned the Chemical Engineering degree from Adamson University in 1974. In the same year she migrated to US landing as a laboratory assistant at CetusCorporation. That was the beginning of her involvement in the biotechnology frontier. Her hard work, dedication and prayers paid
Engr. Jose F. Rafols versatility as an engineer brought him to the height he dared to achieve. Holding the degrees Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering from Adamson University and Master of Science in Management Engineering from FEATI University, he was able to get into both the national and international scene teaching, management and engineering positions. Immediately after college graduation, he worked as a quality engineer at the Darigold Milk Co., while working too as a part time instructor at Adamson University. In 1974, he went to Chicago, Illinois working as a Manufacturing Engineer at the Garcy Corporation. From Manufacturing Engineer, he rose to Senior Industrial Engineer at Bell and Howell Corporation and Bourns Medical Systems, Inc. and as Industrial Engineer Specialist at Rockwell International Corporation. At present he is the Facilities Project Administrator of Boeing Corporation.
The awards and the recognition given to him by Boeing and Rockwell International Corporation are testimonies of his dedicated service to the said prestigious companies. Some of these awards are: Rockwell Engineer of the Month, Boeing Individual Recognition Award, and the Boeing Group Recognition Award.
With the Adamsonian blood-running in his veins, he is a member of several religious organization in America. Such as Boeing Community Service, Seal Beach, California, Advisory Board, Filipino Ministry Diocese of San Bernardino, Institute of Industrial Engineers and Adamson University Alumni Association of Southern California.

Having 26 years of experience in the Pulp and Paper industry, his is a success stay worthy of emulation and inspiration.
He holds a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering degree from Adamson University in 1971, and Advanced Management Program from University of Hawaii, Honolulu. This educational background coupled with great determination and industry has seized every golden opportunity that came and has come along his way. Some of this remarkable accomplishments include being the VP for Manufacturing of TIPCO-Bataan and Makati.
Despite his successes, like tissue paper, he remains to be very beneficial and useful to all especially to his wife and 3 children and very soft hearted to those who need his help, Indeed, this award is just a confirmation of who he is as an Adamsonian and how worth-emulating he is.
Remain Onward ……………………………………………………………………………………………….
Rho Omicron Fraternity and Sorority is organized exclusively for charitable, scientific and educational purposes, more specifically to provide recognition for a high standard of scholarship among students in engineering and sciences: to promote and encourage scholastic achievement by offering membership to outstanding students; and to engender certain desirable qualities of personality, intellect, and character among its members. Excellence among its members and relationships will be nurtured, opportunity for leadership training provided and a lifetime of brotherhood and sisterhood to be fostered. In the conduct of our activities, truth shall be our quest, diligence our staff, and achievement our purpose.
The promulgation of these noble purposes has caused the Rho Omicron Fraternity to be founded originally by 12 students from different sciences and engineering departments at the old campus of Adamson University in 1963.
The twelve founders were: Eden Chuanico, Aureo Garay, Francisco Mataac, Paciano Matanguihan, Natalio Sumisim, Jose F. Rafols, Rodolfo Ramos, Alex Reyes, Felix Salvador, Rodolfo Sare, Patrocinio Sosa & Arthur Yap.
The Rho Omicron Sorority came shortly in 1969 which was originally founded by 4 students from different sciences and engineering departments of Adamson University to support the increasing activities of the fraternity.
The four founders were: Rosario Pagulayan-Avellana, Luz Tantuco-Sy, Yolanda Zaguirre-Dizon and Violeta Loyola-Casia.
On the picture is the pin design of Rho Omicron Fraternity and Sorority. The pin symbolizes the memberships mostly of engineering and science students in the past.
Joining a fraternity and sorority is a major commitment to the members scholastic and social standing within the campus environment. Rho Omicron is proud to say that acceptance to our organization does not include hazing. Ours is purely aimed at academic and leadership excellence.
Remain Onward ……………………………………………………………………………………………….
Potential members have to undergo the two preliminary initiation rites followed by the one day final initiation which is also the Acceptance Day. Here shown below is the 1971 final initiation.
The Rho Omicron Fraternity and Sorority was the main sponsor of the Annual Inter-Chemistry Contest. For so many years this activity have been one of the successful project of Rho Omicron.
The Rho Omicron Fraternity and Sorority was also a member of the Confederation of Fraternities and Sororities at Adamson University. We are active participants in the Inter-fraternity Basketball Tournament held every year. And our sorority sisters have been our cheering squads. Some of them were candidates to the Miss Adamson Beauty contest.
In all fairness our fraternity and sorority has been a consistent honor society at Adamson University.
Continuing our legacy we maintain contacts with our brothers and sisters by having reunions, e-mails or phone contacts. These keep us close together through the years.
The result is priceless as
they reap the reward of
brotherhood and sisterhood.
It is the climax of the
initiation process.
Remain Onward ……………………………………………………………………………………………….
Our motto have been the guiding path towards our educational and professional journey.
”REMAIN ONWARD”
Supplemented with our code of conduct it strengthened our faith in the fulfillment of career and quality of life.
”CODE OF CONDUCT”
1. I shall uphold that brotherhood and sisterhood means cooperation, cooperation is the foundation of success.
2. I shall defend the constitution, strive hard to protect the good name of the fraternity and sorority.
3. I shall value my life as I value my profession. The success of my life lingers on my profession.
4. I shall endeavor to seek new frontiers, and shall not rest on exploring until the vitality of my life is exhausted.
5. I shall not run away from hardships and difficulties. Hardships and difficulties are insurmountable mountains who fearfully ran away from them, but are mere mole hills for those who are really determined to go after them.
6. I shall help my brothers and sisters in times of need. For their welfare is my welfare and their dignity is my dignity, their honor is my honor.
7. Lastly, I shall not forget to give honor where honor is due especially to the master of us all, God. The world is full of handsome and dubious eggs called possibilities.

Rho Omicron Fraternity and Sorority alumni members participates in Adamson University’s Educational Extension Program by which returning alumni are being invited and given opportunities to become resource speakers in their field of expertise. By doing so students were given insights of what happens after graduation and what to expect of which they appreciate it very much. We encourage our alumni members when visiting the Philippines to contact the Office of the President so that they will know you are coming and they can make arrangement for you to speak with those students in your field of expertise.
Shown in the picture is Brod Rene Sio who was invited to be the guest speaker in the Orientation of Graduating Students.
Brod Joe Rafols who have been resource speaker in industrial engineering in 1989, 1994, 1999, 2004 and in 2007. Shown in the picture are faculty members and 2007 participants in the industrial engineering symposium
In 1999 a letter requesting for activation of the Rho Omicron Fraternity and Sorority was sent to the Office of Student Affairs. We sought the support of some faculty members but because of the bad reputation brought by other fraternities in other schools this request did not go far. In the late 2006 our request for activation has been revived through letters to the Office of Student Affairs and e-mails to the Office of the President.
Through negotiations by our alumni members in the Philippines our campus presence have been recognized in early 2007 under the name of Rho Omicron Society.

We are also the only fraternity and sorority that supported the souvenir program of the Adamson University’s 75th Homecoming Celebration.
More on the success of the Rho Fraternity and Sorority is the awarding of our brods, Rene Sio, Joe Rafols and Sis Dory Bugawan as outstanding alumni awardees and recipient of the “Adamsonian Award”.
In 2006 Rho Omicron Fraternity and Sorority is the only organization listed in the donor list posted in the Hallway of the Ozanam Building.

M E S S A G E
February 2008
On behalf of the officers and members of the SAMAL BATAAN ASSCIATION OF CALIFORNIA and the PIN HI GOLFERS ASSOCIATION, I would like to congratulate the brothers and sisters of the RHO OMICRON SOCIETY. The society had evolved from its inception of fraternity to a humanitarian organization, composed of accomplished brothers and sisters all over the world. Needless to say that I am proud to be a part of the society, who made the difference on their own field of endeavor. The most noble part of all is the calling to give back especially to our beloved Alma Mater, the Adamson University and our scholarship recipients.
I remain onward,
Raul Llanda
