Learning from home A home study course offers you the opportunity to learn from the comfort of your own home. This means that you can study at a time that suits you best but it does require a certain amount of discipline! Sometimes you may need support and advice and we aim to provide you with the support you need. Enrolling You can enroll with THE GARDEN SCHOOL Home Study course at anytime. Once enrolled, you have 24 months in which to complete the course. You can finish your course as quick as you like but there is no need to rush. YOU CAN PAY BY INSTALMENTS OVER FIVE OR TEN MONTHS.





Study Packs Once you have enrolled on the Home Study course you will receive your first Study Pack, which includes: a) Course notes b) Assessment paper c) CD-ROM d) Seminar dates There are eight Study Packs in total, which you will receive in two parts. The Study Packs are complemented by a CD-ROM designed by THE GARDEN SCHOOL and featuring plants and other presentations to accompany the course notes. On completion of a Study Pack you can complete the corresponding assessment paper which and then you will send it to THE GARDEN SCHOOL for correction.





Assessments Once you complete the assessment, it is returned to The Garden School for marking. Once the assessment is marked, it is returned with comments and suggestions made by the assessor. These assessments follow the format and style of the examination papers. Q. Can I still enrol even if do not own a computer? A. Yes, you can. The bulk of the material is sent on paper. The CD is our way of adding a little bit extra to the course. Q. Is there any difference between THE GARDEN SCHOOL Home Study course content and the part time course? A. The home study course is the same course that is offered as night and part-time classes, preparing people for the RHS Level 2 Certificate in Horticulture.





The CD-ROM that accompanies the Study packs features presentations to complement your notes.

Visual learning aids increase the enjoyment of learning.





The plant photo galleries make learning plant names easy and enjoyable, removing the necessity to go searching in lots of different books.

Information for each the plant is featured in the presentation.





Keep them coming It is recommended that assessments be returned regularly. If no assessments are returned for a period of six months, the student is deemed to have completed the course and the remaining Study Packs will be sent, but correspondence will cease. The examination The examinations are held in February and June each year at a number of locations around the Country. Application forms are available from the Garden School. The examination requires a fee to be paid by the student to The Garden School which is forwarded to the Royal Horticultural Society. Anybody over the age of 16 is eligible to take the examination. The full course should be completed before any examinations are taken. The exam is not compulsory. There are eight examination papers, the exams are held over two days. The exams can be taken one at a time, a few at a time or all together.





Books and material It is intended that the course materials will cover all areas of the course, leaving students fully prepared for the examination. The purchase of books is not required. We do, however, include a suggested reading list with your first Study Pack. Seminars and garden visits A number of seminars will be held in Dublin on Saturdays throughout the year together with visits to the National Botanic Gardens and workshops at Marlay Park. While enrolled on the Home Study Course you will be entitled to take part in these activities. The seminars give everyone on the course the opportunity to meet, exchange experiences and meet The Garden School tutor, Ciaran Burke. The seminars are not compulsory. You can choose not to attend any seminars and enrol on Option 2, correspondence only. If choosing option 2 you can





attend individual seminars, the cost per seminar is €50, you pay on the day. HOME STUDY – ENROLMENT OPTIONS A number of enrollment options are now available.

1. Enroll on the course for two years with garden

visits included. 2. You can choose to enroll on the course without

any garden visit seminars. 3. Choose to enroll and attend garden visits and

seminars only for a 12 month period. 4. A combination of options 2 and 3. 5. Extend the enrolment period for an extra twelve

moths once our initial enrolment period has elapsed.

Instalment plans over five or ten months are

available for all options.





RHS LEVEL 2 CERTIFICATE IN THE PRINCIPLES OF HORTICULTURE HOME STUDY COURSE

WHAT IS THE RHS LEVEL 2 CERTIFICATE IN THE PRINCIPLES OF HORTICULTURE? The Royal Horticultural Society Level 2 Certificate in the Principles of Horticulture is a recognised qualification. On successful completion of the examination candidates may choose to continue their studies in order to obtain higher qualifications: the RHS Level 3. An attractive feature of this course is that it is purely horticultural and students are not required to study non-horticultural subjects as on many other courses. WHO IS ELIGIBLE? Anyone over 16 years of age who has an interest in gardening, whether it is with a view to working as a professional horticulturist or just to expand his or her knowledge. Enrolling on The Garden School RHS Level 2 Certificate in the Principles of Horticulture is the perfect starting point for discovering the wonderful world of horticulture.





STUDY PACKS

Once you have enrolled on the Home Study you will receive your first set of course material which includes: a) Study Packs 1, 2, 3 and 4. b) Home Study CD. There are eight Study Packs and two data CDs in total. You will receive your Study Packs in two parts. On completion of a Study Pack you will request an assessment paper, which you will return for correction.

THE EXAMINATION The examination is held twice each year in February and June at a number of locations around the United Kingdom and Ireland. Candidates not resident in the UK or Ireland may, with the approval of the RHS Examinations Office, make arrangements for taking the Examination in their country of residence but they will be responsible for any cost incurred. The application for the exams is made through The Garden School. We will send the relevant information with your first Study Pack. Those who do not wish to sit the examination do not have to do so. The examination requires a fee to be paid by the student to the Royal Horticultural Society. Anybody over the age of 16 is eligible to take the examination. Exam fees are not included in the cost of the course. For those who do not wish to sit the RHS exam but complete the course, they will be issued with a Certificate of Completion. The RHS Level 2 Certificate is part of a progressive programme of horticultural examinations awarded by the Royal Horticultural Society. Successful candidates can then proceed to the RHS Level 3. This is a revised syllabus replacing the RHS Certificate in Horticulture Syllabus. There are 8 Units in Total:

Understanding garden features, plant selection and planning Includes:

• Basic surveying techniques. • Site appraisal and data collection for planning purposes. • Basic principles and elements of design used in garden planning. • Characteristics of garden styles. • Use of hard and soft landscaping materials.

Understanding the choice, establishment and maintenance of

garden plants and lawns Includes:

• Selection and establishment of a range of plants. • Establishment and maintenance of lawns and wildflower grassland. • Plants for seasonal display (bedding). • Maintenance of trees, shrubs, climbers, hedges, roses and ground

cover. • Maintenance of annual borders and Herbaceous Perennial borders.

Understanding the production of outdoor vegetables and fruit Includes:

• Site selection. • Cultural operations to produce out door food in a garden situation. • Production methods for a range of vegetable crops. • Production methods for a range of fruit crops.

Understanding protected environments and their use in plant

cultivation Includes:

• Elements of the environment under protection. • Structural and cladding materials. • Controlling the environment under protection. • Containers used in protected environment. • Plants in the protected environment (uses, establishment and

maintenance). • Care of plants in an interior situation.





Plant Classification, structure and function Includes:

• Naming of plants. • Identification of structures and function of plant structures. • Plant physiology. • Plant reproductive processes. • Plant growth and development.

Plant nutrition and the root environment Includes:

• Soil profiles. • Physical properties of soil. • Organic matter and soil organisms. • Soil water. • Soil pH. • Plant nutrition. • Soil cultivations.

Understanding plant propagation Includes:

• Propagation by seed. • Conditions for successful propagation in a garden situation. • Factors influencing successful propagation by cuttings. • Production of plants by vegetative techniques. • Budding and grafting, definition of terms and reasons for using

these methods. Maintaining Plant health Includes:

• Importance of safe, healthy and environmentally sustainable practices.

• Weed control. • Plant pests, identification, damage caused and methods to limit the

effects. • Plant diseases, identification, damage caused and of control. • Plant disorders and methods of avoidance. • Methods of crop and plant protection. Identifying pests and damage

caused • Environmentally friendly controls of pests, diseases and weeds.

Elements from each part are taught together. We see this as being especially beneficial when it comes to learning plant names and their care. Although the different parts are examined separately, each subject has relevance to others and only by studying them all can a full understanding and appreciation of plants and their growth be achieved. This knowledge can then be applied to practical situations. Understanding of basic horticultural and scientific principles and applying these principles to everyday gardening and horticultural practices is the aim of the course.

TWELVE MONTHS ENROLMENT PERIOD GARDEN SEMINARS ONLY Ten visits to the National Botanic Gardens in Dublin with Ciaran Burke as your guide. Join with the students from the home study course for walks in the gardens and classroom sessions (if the weather is bad). Learn about plants through the seasons, garden techniques and lots of other interesting garden information. Ideal for past students, and for those that want a less formal course. 5 or 10 month instalment option available (see enrolment form).

OPTION 4 - Correspondence Course (24 Months) and Garden Visits for 12 Month Period (10 visits) The cost of the course is €700.00
