Shark fin ban considered by cityRichmond can play a key role in a region-wide ban: Protesters

The City of Richmond is investigating thepossibility of banning shark fin products.

The probe began after a delegation of ani-mal rights protesters, led by Anthony Marrof the Vancouver Animal Defense League, appealed to city council to enact a ban on thefins in Richmond.

Councillors agreed to allow city staff tolook into the matter, specifically asking themto find out what other cities have done.

It was noted there’s no point in Richmondintroducing a ban if people can simply go toa neighbouring city to find the product.

According to Marr, up to 50 of the world’s307 shark species are endangered due toshark finning; fins from which are used forsoup and health products in the Chinesecommunities, where it traditionally repre-sents wealth and wellness.

It’s been reported that shark fin can sellfor up to $600 per pound, which encour-ages the practice of sawing off the fins andleaving the ocean predator to bleed to death.Environmental groups have called for an endto the eating of shark fin soup which is oftenserved at special occasions, particularly wed-dings, by Chinese communities worldwide.

Richmond is seen as a key component tothe ban movement, with more than half thecity’s population being of Chinese descent.

Staff have been given until the end of theyear to return to council with a full report onwhat a ban might look like in the city.

“Their reaction was favourable,” saidMarr, who’d organized a small protest ofabout 20 people outside of city hall beforethe meeting Monday night.

“Lots of the city councillors were nod-ding their heads when I was talking and theyasked a lot of intelligent questions, so I’mquite hopeful.

“One of them asked what would stopsomeone going to Vancouver to get theirshark fin soup if it was banned in Richmond? It’s a good question, but the logical solution

would be to have a simultaneous ban in bothcities.”

Marr said he did contact the City ofVancouver about making a presentation, buthasn’t heard anything back yet.

“I think they’re waiting to see the reactionin Richmond first,” Marr added.

New Westminster’s Queensboroughcould be joining Richmond — at least forfederal elections.

The Federal Electoral BoundariesCommission for British Columbiahas proposed new electoral maps forCanadians’ consideration at public hear-ings that are taking place in the fall.

Richmond’s hearing will be held onTuesday, Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. at the BestWestern Abercorn Inn.

Ten independent electoral boundariescommissions — one in each province— will determine the new federal elec-toral boundaries.

Under the proposed boundaries,Queensborough would become part of theRichmond East riding.

“It’s a major change,” said NewWestminster-Coquitlam MP Fin Donnelly.“I am trying to maintain that the commis-sion is being an objective, fair body but itsure has a few heads being scratched.”

Moving Queensborough to theRichmond-East riding isn’t the onlychange proposed for New Westminster;instead of splitting the city into the exist-ing Burnaby-New Westminster and theNew Westminster-Coquitlam ridings, thecity would be represented in the proposedNew Westminster-Burnaby East riding.

Burnaby-New Westminster MP PeterJulian said some significant changesare proposed for New Westminster andBurnaby. The electoral commission isalso proposing that North Burnaby joinwith part of North Vancouver.

“The electoral commission has a toughjob,” Julian said. “They are going to dothe best job they can in putting the firstdrafts out.”

Julian recalls that first drafts of bound-aries presented back in 2002 recommend-ed a federal riding join parts of NewWestminster and Surrey.

Julian credits the boundaries commis-sion for considering the public feedbackin 2002 and coming back with newboundaries, which exist today.

Julian said he’s already heard concernsabout the proposed boundaries fromQueensborough residents.

“They don’t see Queensborough asbeing a community of interest with down-town Richmond,” he said. “It is an issueof concern to folks.”

Julian has also heard from local con-stituents who like that New Westminsterhas two members of Parliament to speakon their behalf. “That doubles our punch-ing weight in the House of Commons.”

Donnelly said he will definitely becommenting on the proposed boundar-ies, noting that the changes would “pullapart” the existing New WestminsterCoquitlam-Port Moody riding that herepresents.

According to Elections Canada, theConstitution of Canada requires that fed-eral electoral districts be reviewed aftereach 10-year census to reflect changesand movements in Canada’s population.

Launched in February, the federalredistribution process is proposing chang-es to many federal ridings in Canada sothe changes and movement to Canada’spopulation is reflected in House ofCommons representation.

The new electoral boundaries areexpected to be in effect for the next fed-eral election, which is slated for Oct.19, 2015. For more information abouthearings in B.C. and maps of proposedboundaries, visit www.federal-redistribu-tion.ca.

Boundary change could add Queensborough

“I will be contacting them again, though. Richmond has a big role to playhere.”

Toronto is about to roll into force aban on the possession, sale and con-sumption of shark fin products fromSept. 1, with a hefty set of fines forviolators, starting at $5,000 for a firstoffence going up to $100,000.

Six more Ontario municipalities havealso agreed to bans and closer to home,Coquitlam, Port Moody and the City ofNorth Vancouver have prohibited pos-session and use of the fins.

“Imagine if aliens abducted you, cut

off your limbs, and then dumped youback on the road,” said Marr.

“That is basically what we’re doingto the sharks by cutting off their finsand dumping them back into the sea.”

Marr added that it’s impossible forpeople who eat shark fin soup to knowwhether or not they’re eating one of theendangered species.

Other groups, including Shark Truth, prefer a softer approach of educatingthe Chinese community on the threatto the species. They claim the drop inshark fin soup consumption is due totheir campaign.

News

Big-hearted Richmond News readershave stepped up to the plate after readingabout the plight of Australian single momSarah.

Offers of food, clothing and householditems have been coming into the Newssince we published the heartfelt story ofSarah and her two-year-old son Simon.

Sarah (name changed for security rea-sons) isn’t allowed to leave B.C. with hertoddler due to a custody battle with theboy’s father, who forced the mom to fleethe family home after years of physicalabuse.

Trapped in a country that won’t let herleave, but can barely support her, Sarahhas no family or friends and has just $125a month left of her income assistance tofeed and cloth herself and the little boy.

However, several readers, includingfamilies and a circle of moms, were somoved by last Friday’s story they offeredfood, clothes for mom and son and evennew or gently used furniture.

Some have even offered their friendshipas a way of supporting Sarah and makingher feel like she matters.

“I had no idea these people were outthere; I’m so overwhelmed I could cry,”Sarah told the News after hearing aboutthe support.

“Thank God for all these great people

out there. I really didn’t think anyonecared. I’m so grateful.”

Although reluctant to rely on charity,Sarah agreed, for the sake of her son, toaccept some of the generous donations.

“Unfortunately, most of the furniturewould be too big for this little basementsuite and I won’t take anything I won’tuse,” she added.

“But just to know that people out theredo care has given me a great lift.”

The News told last week how Sarah,39, fled to the safety of Sydney fromRichmond Hospital, where she’d beenadmitted after another beating at the handsof her now estranged husband.

After giving birth to Simon in Australiaand hearing promises from her husbandthat he’d turned over a new leaf, Sarah waslater wooed back to Canada.

But a little more than a year after gam-bling with a return to Richmond, she suf-fered more abuse, moved in and out of awomen’s transition home and now findsherself carving out a meagre existence in abasement suite in Richmond.

While waiting from the court to hearif she can return to Australia with her sonand whether or not the father will paychild maintenance, she shells out $800 amonth on rent, hydro and laundry, leavingjust $125 of her income assistance to liveon.

More on this story in Friday’s newspa-per.

Richmond RCMP is leading a code-of-conduct inquiry into a Mountie whoplayed a bit part in the investigationinto serial killer Robert Pickton andappeared on an Internet website posingin sexually explicit torture images remi-niscent of the pig-farmer’s crimes.

In some of the graphic picturesobtained by media, Coquitlam Cpl.Jim Brown appears to wear only hisregulation-issue Mountie boots and anerection as he wields a huge knife and abound naked woman cringes in terror.

His detachment commander, Supt.Claude Wilcott, said that when hebecame aware of the material on theWeb earlier this year, he discussed theissue with the force’s legal services todetermine if there was a violation of theMountie code of conduct.

“Despite this legal opinion, a code-of-conduct investigation is under-wayto determine if there are any additional

facts and ensure the fullest reviewpossible,” he said. “While I agree thestaged images are graphic, it’s importantto note that they appear only on an adultsite catering to those who seek themout.”

Mike Webster, who has had a careercounselling police officers and advisingdepartments, including the RCMP, saidthe sexual degradation of women in theimages raises serious concerns.

“The fact that Mr. Brown couldengage in these activities without con-sidering current attitudes toward thistype of behaviour indicates to me thathis empathetic abilities are impaired,”Webster said.

Brown declined to comment aboutthe pictures, but acknowledged beingaware of them. “I am familiar with aninternal investigation that was conduct-ed. It concluded in March or April andit was decided it was a non-issue. Therewas no victim.”

Lawyer Jason Gratl said Brown’seven peripheral involvement in the

missing women investigation was trou-bling.

Gratl, who represented DowntownEastside community groups at the pub-lic inquiry into the Pickton police inves-tigation, wondered why CommissionerWally Oppal wasn’t informed when hewas conducting hearings at the momentthe RCMP learned of the material.

“This pictorial enactment of a kid-napping and torture by an RCMP inves-tigator crystallizes the ethical nexusbetween the detachment and the farm.... While the enactment of the kidnap-ping of a young woman from a placethat resembles Strathcona to a dimlylit rural setting where she is put in ananimal cage and tortured may haveoccurred after the terms of reference [ofthe inquiry], its relevance ... is indisput-able.”

Brown did not appear at the MissingWomen’s Inquiry or at the Pickton trial. His name, however, appears on the“Key Events Chronology” exhibit filedfor one of the policing panels.

smuggler Shminder Johal— a Richmond business-man — was not the leaderof a sophisticated cross-

Danny Markovitz saidit would be unfair toimpose a term of 20 yearson Johal, 38, as prosecu-tor James Torrance urgedJustice Selwyn Romillyto do.

“It would ruin the livesof his children, his wife, his parents,” Markovitz

told B.C. Supreme Court.Romilly convicted

Johal and former CanadaServices Border Agencyguard Baljinder Kandolaof importing more than200 kilograms of cocaineback in 2007 and beingpart of a smuggling con-spiracy that involved othershipments.

“There is someoneobviously higher up thanMr. Johal,” Markovitz

EDITORIAL OPINION

The deeply sad story that unfolded in B.C. SupremeCourt this week underscores both the seriousness ofmental illness and the challenges in managing it.

When 28-year-old Jordan Ramsay murdered his fatherand permanently injured his mother in November 2011, hewas highly delusional and under medicated for his schizo-phrenia.

Even with close supervision and care, our mentally illloved ones can slip through the cracks. And far too manymore are living out of reach of the system entirely, as evi-denced by our homeless population, many of whom strug-gle with both mental illness and addiction simultaneously.

If we hope to improve psychiatric care in this province,we first have to overcome the stigma we attach to mentalillness.

When it comes to a physical ailments, whether minorcomplaints or traumatic injuries or chronic diseases, BritishColumbians have a vast, heavily funded system to turn to.This is because we, as a society, don’t see these as the faultof the sufferer, but rather as mishaps that could befall anyone of us.

But when the illness is in a person’s mind, we tend toturn away; we see it as a source of shame that is somehowthe fault of the one trying to overcome it. The inadequaciesof our system, and the consequent depth of the problem, are a direct result of this view.

If we shifted our thinking, if we put the kind of resourc-es toward mental illness that we put toward physical inju-ries, we might avoid countless tragic outcomes.

NDP leader Adrian Dixis noticeably frustrated byPremier Christy Clark’ssteadfast refusal to take aposition on the proposedEnbridge Northern Gatewaypipeline, and it’s not hard tosee why.

Unless there is a radi-cal shift in public opinion,Dix will assume Clark’s jobafter next spring’s election. But, even as premier, hemay find himself power-less to have any impact atall on the final decision onEnbridge.

The joint review panel’shearings on the pipelineproposal are scheduled toend next April, about amonth before the election. Afinal decision on the projectis expected some time nextyear.

But the B.C. govern-ment has chosen to registeras an “Intervenor” in thehearing process, and not asa “Government Participant,”which reduces any role itcan play in the hearings.

Interestingly, Alberta– where the proposed pipe-line would originate – hasregistered as a “GovernmentParticipant,” and so is ableto present its argumentsand positions on an issuethat is of vital economicimportance to that province(a number of federal depart-ments and agencies, plustowns along the proposedpipeline route – includingKitimat and Fort St. James– have also registered as“government participants”)..

A legal analysisrecently released by theEnvironmental Law Centreat the University of Victoria

has raised concerns thatB.C.’s own interests may notbe adequately considered bythe review panel, as a resultof the B.C. government’srefusal to play a role in thehearings.

“While the Joint ReviewPanel has received evidencefrom the Alberta govern-ment as to the project’sbenefits (particularly forAlberta oil producers) ithas received no evidencefrom the B.C. governmentas to its costs and impactsfor British Columbia,” writethe report’s authors, ChrisTollefson and Emma Hume.

“There is growing con-cern that this imbalance inthe evidence submitted tothe hearing may adverselyaffect the ability of the JRPto weigh the costs and ben-efits of the project, and tofully consider B.C.’s inter-ests,” they conclude.

Clark has insisted hergovernment may presentevidence sometime in thefuture, but the deadline forsubmissions has alreadypassed. The UVic reportconcludes it is by no meanscertain, or even probable, that the panel will agree tohear evidence from B.C. ata later date.

In fact, the report sug-gests the longer the B.C.government waits to attemptto submit evidence, the less

likelihood the panel willagree to consider it.

However, Clark hasshown no signs of changingher government’s positionany time soon.

So it’s no coincidencethat Dix has circulated anop-ed piece demandingthat Clark make her gov-ernment’s views known onan issue that has emergedas perhaps the most criticalenvironmental showdownthis province has seen indecades.

Dix notes Clark has saidB.C. is taking “100 per centof the risks” yet gets littlebenefit from the Enbridgeproject, and points out Clarkhas stated she is “pro-pipe-line.”

“This contradictorystance can only be inter-preted as a deliberate strat-egy of a premier who wantsthe Enbridge pipeline toproceed, but doesn’t want tosay so,” Dix writes.

Dix and his NDP caucushave, of course, written tothe National Energy Board, outlining their reasons foropposing the project.

But he no doubt real-izes that even if he were towin the next election, hemay not have any furtheropportunity to push B.C.’sinterests into the debateover the final decision onthe pipeline.

And that’s prov-ing frustrating for him.Nevertheless, expect thepipeline project to loomlarge in the next electioncampaign.

The Editor,When it comes to hospital wait-times and parking rates,

there is never a win-win. Since we are patients and not therebecause we want to be, hospitals should charge reasonablerates.

Recently, I had to get an IV drip. As I waited and finallygot my drip put in, my parking ran out. Of course, I had noway of renewing the meter once I was in a room on an IVdrip. When I came out, I had a $48 ticket.

Where is the justice?Greedy companies and governments charge for everything.

What’s next, getting charged for the air we breath?Anyway, I went to security and they said parking is not

consistent and they do not always check so don’t worry aboutit? OK, so now I am told there is no consistency.

This is a hospital!!! Make it a one-charge parking fee. Ihave travelled to many places in U.S. and Canada and there ismuch more free parking available and especially at hospitalsin other areas. What is up with this city and charging crazyprices for everything?

Come on now. This is a hospital, and we can’t always getto our cars. What if someone went in with a heart attack?Talk about a double bad luck day — getting a heart attack andcharged for parking or parking expiring. Give me a break!!!!

Until I stumbled into therole of parenting for the bio-logical children who choseme for their sperm donor(what were they thinking?)and those who have hon-oured me by adopting me asbig brother, substitute father,stand-in grandfather, andmentor, I don’t think I under-stood the meaning of thewords “fear” or “love.” Evennow, as one of the GnarlyOld Dudes and Dames ofSteveston (GODDS) theonly thing that really scaresthe hell out of me is ourchildren’s future.

Why? Human populationhas now doubled to 7.018billion, just as forecast in thelast century, 50 years ago, when I was a young man.The rate of increase is alsonow twice what it was then.We are now hurtling downthe track to a disastrous deadend of global proportionsand picking up speed!

We have depleted MotherEarth’s resources, changedher climate, extinguishedcountless species, pavedsome of the world’s morearable land, tolerated theglobal deaths to starvation-related diseases of the equiv-alent of Canada’s populationevery year, and still cling tothe false hope that the latestwhizz-bang technology willsave our sorry butts. Ask anyNative Canadian who wassent to a residential school ifyou need evidence.

Most distressingly, theevil which stalks us nowwears a corporate uni-form. Our political systemof “IDIOCRACY” (creditfor the term goes to CaseyCareless) is controlled byan economic model whichdepends for its success onincreasing growth and profit, and talks about “sustainabledevelopment.” That is bothon oxymoron and a load ofbull crap! The current ruleof this rodeo is “whoeverhas the most wealth whenwe hit that dead end, wins.”As Phyrrus, a famous kingof Greece (+ 400 B.C.) oncecommented “One more vic-tory like that and we are

undone.”So, do you think I’m god-

less? Just the opposite. Nomore than the acronym ofthe people for whom I writeis accidental: GODDS. Ibelieve in all the GODDS!Why? People have to believein something. My personalpreference has been distilledin Dublin, Ireland, since1780, by John Jameson andSons, but if you have anotherpreference, fair enough.

Where we part companyis when these beliefs super-sede sober thinking. So, callme an agnostic, an atheist, apagan, a heathen, or a whitekaffir if it turns your crank. No matter how you maychoose to hate me, I wouldstill give my life for yourchild! Why? Because we alllove our kids, don’t we? Ifnot, we need to have a dif-ferent dialogue. We want ahappy, safe future for them, don’t we? It all comes backto that universal conundrumwhich is, there are too many.

And so (yes, I know kids, its ungrammatical), as weobserve World PopulationDay on Wednesday, July 11,I care less what your think, than that you think. Socrates(+400 B.C.) is reputed tohave said, “The only goodis knowledge and the onlyevil is ignorance.” Pleaseremember, too, what thatother famous classical phi-losopher of our times, ClintEastwood (The Unforegiven)said, in contradiction toSinead O’Connor’s hope,“Deserve’s got nothing todo with it!” Think about it. Ihave no doubt the editor willwelcome your counterargu-ment and so would I, if Isurvive.

The Editor,Re: Editorial cartoon, Opinion, July 4.The July 4 editorial cartoon in the Richmond News was

priceless. It illustrated that our country is being run by abully and a dictator.

I find our situation very alarming. And it is sad that wehave to wait until the next federal election to put a stop tothe destruction of what we as Canadians stand for.

The Editor,We check the ShraplTide app

before we decide if Shady Island issafe to visit. ShraplTide indicates ifthe tide is going up or down, and thetwo low and two high tides for theday.

It works when you hold youriPhone vertically. When you tip yourphone horizontally, a series of wavesindicate the height of the tides.

As I write this, it is 21:15 ona Wednesday night. The tide is at4.23m and going down. It will be at3.02m at 0:54 and then the tide willrise again.

I can check four days worth oftide tables, calculated for Steveston.Thursday, July 5 at 14:05 was a goodday to visit Shady Island; the tidewas at a low of 0.87.

By about 16:00, most of the weirwill be covered — that is your lastopportunity to get back to the main-land.

There was a short window ofopportunity on Friday at 14:46,when the low tide is at 1.06m.Generally we don’t go over unlessthe low tide is well below 1m.

We’ve stood on the rocks of theweir when the tide was at 1.5m andwatched it creep up around our feet. The water laps a few times in thesame place, and then suddenly it’shigher.

Three laps later, and it’s higheragain. You don’t want to risk cross-ing sharp, slippery rocks with a rap-idly rising tide.

There are not many days of the

year when the tide is low enough togive you a long time frame to visitShady Island.

However, if you do get out there, snack on some of the salmon ber-ries growing profusely there, andthen head out to the mile-long sandybeach, rimmed by slowly decay-ing WWII wharfs, and dotted withseveral wooden shipwrecks, ribssplayed wide open.

In one wreck, iron nails are rust-ing into the sand below, while grass

grows lushly out of its middle.Another wreck has an old six-

cylinder engine that is uncovered atlow tide.

At the far end of the beach youcan see a tall, bare tree crowned bya bald eagle’s nest with a busy eaglefamily in it.

Shady Island is a wonderfuladventure — just watch your tidetables!

The Editor,I have just found out the bike park at the end of No.

2 Road is slated to become a condo development. What on God’s earth are the city’s road planning

people thinking about?Surely the obvious use of this land, if it’s not to be

for the kids, is to have No. 2 Road progress through itand make a gentle turn east to join Dyke Road. Thiswould eliminate two right angle turns, two stop signsand a dog’s leg bend that presently exist to get from No.2 Road to Dyke Road.

Is this too simple? Or, is this a case once again of adeveloper being in the pockets of city hall?

Many years ago, Iwas research assistantto a famous Americanjournalist who waswriting a book aboutart. Being very naïve,I dared to criticize hisstyle. But only once.

What a finger-wag-ging I got. And I wastold in no uncertain terms to stop beingso pernickety.

I’ve long forgotten how morti-fied I felt at being reprimanded. All Iremember now is that wonderful wordpernickety. Originating in Scotland inthe early 19th century, it means fussy, overly precise. For me, pernicketyarouses memories of an era when lifemoved at a human pace, when we hadtime to be nitpicking.

Today’s accelerated pace can easilyoverburden us with stress. People havedifferent ways of relieving the pres-sure. Some vent their feelings by mut-tering a few choice words. Too often, they are tiresome four-letter expletives.Whenever I hear them, I want to hurlthose obscenities to the bowels of theEarth and replace them with somevibrant words that have long served uswell.

My mother, when riled, had recourse

to a handful of expres-sive terms.

Knucklehead wasone of her favourites. She used it most oftenwhen behind the wheel.Knucklehead startedout in 1869 as the namefor a component of amechanical coupling

device, but by 1890, it referred to a per-son behaving stupidly.

In fact, there’s a range of wordsdescribing people whose actions orbehaviour exasperate us. Nincompoop, meaning a fool, has been around atleast since 1676. Noodle, which theattentive listener will have heard on“Downton Abbey,” has a similar con-notation and is first recorded in 1753;noodledom refers to noodles collec-tively.

Other words allude to the thick-headedness of someone acting fool-ishly. Blockhead, popular in the 16thcentury, has as its source the woodenhead used by wig-makers and hat-ters. Numskull, in use since the early18th century, appealed to Dickens— remember Sir Arrogant Numskull inBleak House? The early 20th centurygave us nitwit, which stresses the silli-ness of a foolish person.

People talking nonsense often goadus into retaliating with a strong remark. For anyone tired of the vulgar slang

“bs,” there’s an arsenal of words readyto be fired off.

Fiddle-faddle is probably the old-est, dating back to 1577. It meanstrifling talk and is akin to fiddlesticks.Balderdash has been known sinceShakespeare’s day, when it was appliedto a jumbled mixture of liquids, likemilk and beer.

In the later 17th century, balderdashcame to signify a senseless jumbleof words. Persiflage, from the French“persifler,” to banter, was introduced in1757 for frivolous talk.

Flummery, meaning empty tri-fling, appeared around the same time.Taradiddle was coined at the end ofthe 18th century to refer to pretentiousnonsense.

It’s a good idea to have anoath ready for when you’re seri-ously provoked. But instead of thosemonotonous profanities, why not try“Malediction!” (15th century) or — myfavourite — “Blastation!” (18th cen-tury)?

Are you flummoxed or nonplussed(confused, perplexed) by what you’vejust read? Well, here’s something thatmay really flabbergast (astonish) you— why don’t we start a Slow Wordmovement, along the lines of SlowFood and Slow Money? Or am I beingtoo pernickety once again?

Thirteen-year-old Ariel Mentahas been fascinated with sciencefiction for as long as she canremember.

“My dad is a big science fic-tion fan so I always had his booksaround,” said Ariel. “I’m also a fanof science fiction movies like Alienvs. Predator.”

Recently, the Steveston-Londonsecondary student inked a bookand self-published it as an eBookthrough kindle.amazon.com.

Her novel, Twisted, takes readersthrough a journey of intrigue, com-plete with a shooting, kidnapping, and lots of twists and turns.

“It is about a girl named MarissaJones who is recruited by the CIAwhen her parents are shot and thenkidnapped by an evil man by thename of Sunny,” said Ariel, addingit took four to five months to com-plete her tale of mystery.

“From there, she goes on a questto seek out her parents while tryingto tear down the agency that Sunnyis trying to build up.

“The whole story is aboutMarissa in pursuit of Sunny.”

The self-professed bookwormhas been putting pen to paper sinceshe was in Grade 2.

“In Grade 2 we had the oppor-tunity to write short stories in classand at the end of the day, the otherstudents would randomly picktheir favourites and mine used toget read in front of the class quiteoften,” said Ariel.

“I liked seeingthe reactions frommy classmates …whether it was sad-ness, surprise, hap-piness or fear.

“I love that I cancontrol the thingsthat happen in mystories.”

In Grade 8, her English teacher,Jennifer Mah, encouraged the aspir-ing author to keep writing.

“She told me not to stop writingand that I have talent,” she said.“This is definitely the career that Iwant … to be a popular publishedauthor.”

Ariel would like to someday

be as well known as award-win-ning screenwriter, producer andauthor Dean Lorey, who wrote theNightmare Academy Series.

“I really like his style of writ-ing,” she added. “In science fictionyou have more freedom, there areno rules.”

The budding writer said she hasnever taken any writing courses,

rather she scoursthe Internet read-ing other sci-fiwriters’ stories, gleaning strategiesand descriptorsthat might work inher stories.

Ariel is part ofan online writers’

forum called writing.com.“You get to post a free portfolio

and we review each other’s writ-ing,” she said. “In my writing, I likedescriptors that hit all of the fivesenses; I write about what my char-acters see, feel and what they like.”

So far, she’s penned three books, although Twisted is her first publi-

cation. To make sure her book was

primed for outside readers’ critique,Ariel relied on her family andfriends to give her feedback.

Then, she sent her 105-pagemanuscript to her grandfather forediting.

“My grandfather used to be aneditor in England and he gave mesome good ideas,” Ariel added.

Her mom, Joanne Menta, couldn’t be prouder.

“Ariel had a couple of stellarteachers in elementary school whoreally nurtured her talent,” saidJoanne Menta. “She’s been readingever since she was old enough tounderstand.

“She has thousands of books inher library … she devours every-thing, from books to magazines tonewspapers.”

Joanne Menta laughed whenasked if Ariel’s writing talents arein the genes.

“My husband John and I reada lot, but neither of us write,” shesaid.

Ariel Menta, 13, has been writing since Grade 2Title: Jack Blank and the

Imagine NationReviewed by: Carmen LuoThis book is about a boy

who doesn’t know where hecomes from, so his teacher at St.Burnaby’s gave him a name. Hisname is Jack Blank. When Jackwas going into Imagine Nation, hefound out he was Rustav infected.Everyone in Empire City is afraid of him. I liked this bookbecause it was very creative and when you read each wordyou can visualize it in your head. Even though there are nopictures, you can still make a movie in your head. The partthat I like the most was the place named Imagine Nation andJack Blank being the hero in Empire City. I even liked thepart when the Rustav were battling Jack — it sounded soepic!

Title: The Magician’s ElephantReviewed by: Joanna XuThis book is about a boy called

Peter Augustus Duchenes, who istraining to become a soldier likehis dead father. Peter has a sisterAdele, who everyone thinks hasdied. Peter asks a fortune tellerfor help to find Adele and thefortune teller says that an elephant

will lead him to her. The problem is that the elephant is inprison for breaking into an opera’s roof. After the elephantwas released from prison, Peter asks it to lead him to Adele. The elephant leads him to Adele and they live together afterthey meet again. I liked this book because it has not only oneproblem in the book and that it makes your brain think whenyou’re solving a problem. I also like the book because thereare descriptive and creative words in some parts. The bestthing I like about the book is that it has a happy ending andthat it has sad times, happy times, exciting times and romantictimes, which makes the book a perfect book!

Title: Misty of ChincoteageReviewed by: Kaylin XuThis book is about two sib-

lings named Paul and MaureenBeebe. They really want to havethe Phantom, a horse that no onewas able to capture before. Theyeven saved up a lot of money forher. On Pony Penning Day, by pureluck, Paul manages to catch, not only the Phantom, but alsoher colt, Misty! However, even after months, the Phantomjust doesn’t seem at rest in her new home. In the end, Paulreleases the Phantom on Chincoteague Island, where she wasborn. I liked this book because of how hard Paul and Maureenworked to overcome all the obstacles in getting the Phantomand Misty. I also liked how Paul set the Phantom free despitegoing through all that trouble in obtaining her. I think that itwas a very kind and selfless act to liberate something whenyou see that it is longing for freedom.

After a certain age, mostwomen (and some men)will go to great lengths to

keep their skin looking younger. These days, there are sev-

eral different ways to diminishthe look of wrinkles, brownspots and other visual indica-tors of age. However, when it comes to

maintaining that youthful glow, prevention is the name of thegame and you need to startearly.Starting in adolescence, says

Judy Drew, who owns AtlantisDay Spa and has worked inthe industry for more than 20years, it’s important for teensto exfoliate regularly and usesunscreen and a basic moistur-izer daily.Using sunscreen, even

through the winter, is key tohelping slowing the clock whenit comes to the age of yourskin.“It prevents the aging pro-

cess,” Drew says.Louise Dannhauer, part

owner of Spa Time, also rec-ommends teens also use agood pH balanced cleanser anda product with salicylic acid tohelp with any blemishes.

That simple regime shouldbe all that’s needed into yourmid-20s.For people in their mid-20s

to 30s, Dannhauer recom-mends starting to look forproducts with anti-aging ingre-dients. Sunscreen is still impor-tant, she said, as well gettingplenty of sleep, drinking lotsof water and exercising can allhelp improve the look of skin.At this point, the skin’s cycle

is starting to slow down andneeds a little extra help.Once you get into the mid-

30s to 40s, most people willstart to see quite a change intheir skin, she said. And howyou cared for your skin in youryounger days has a directeffect on how it ages.“It really relates to how we

take care of our skin whenwe’re young,” Drew said, add-ing that the skin has a goodmemory when it comes to sundamage. For those looking to turn

back the clock for their skin, there is a whole range of treat-ments and procedures that canhelp shave years off your skin. For those looking to bring

back a bit of that youthful glow,Drew recommends a chemicalpeel or micro-dermabrasion.Both offer a more intense exfo-liation than can be achieved athome and can be done sepa-rately or combined.Micro-dermabrasion can help

erase fine lines and improvethe look of wrinkles, as wellas repair sun damage and pig-mentation problems. The treatment stimulates

cell regeneration and promotessmoother, brighter and youngerlooking skin.Dannhauer says that anyone

over the age of 40 can havethe treatment done as often asevery four weeks. For those looking for treat-

ments that pack a bit morepunch, botox, fillers and evenlasers can be used, eitheralone or in addition to othertreatments, to take years offa face by getting ride of linesand wrinkles, tighten or resur-face the skin, and remove agespots. Last year, Drew expand-ed the services she offers toinclude botox and fillers, andnow has a doctor on staff tocarry out those procedures.

India and the Taj Mahal are synonymousin the minds of most visitors. But there is agroup of lesser known, but no less dramaticMoghul monuments that lie a mere 35 milesaway from Agra (the site of the Taj) in thelittle village of Fatehpur Sikri.

The story goes that in the mid-1600s, theMoghul Emperor Akbar the Great, desperatefor a son and heir, sought an audience withthe reclusive Muslim saint Salim Chisti. Thesaint blessed the Emperor, and the followingyear, the birth of Akbar’s firstborn son occa-sioned tumultuous rejoicing.

Akbar decided that as a mark of honourto Salim Chisti, he would move his capitalfrom Agra to Fatehpur Sikri. He proceeded tobuild a wondrous city with buildings of glow-ing red sandstone, splendid courtyards andairy pavilions.

Along with a couple of friends, I’m in arather ramshackle (read: cheap) public busrattling through one of the huge entrancearchways to the walled city. We dismountonly to be assailed by a small army of wan-nabe guides. Eventually, we succumb to themost Velcro-like of the lot — a young man

with an engaging grin, named Mahmood.Despite his fractured English, Mahmood

turns out to be a good investment. He alsohas a flair for the dramatic: “Prisoners killedhere on courtyard,” he says, throwing himselfon the grass beside the pathway. He writhesin simulated death throes.

I am a little dubious about this: Akbar, byall accounts was a humane Emperor and itseems unlikely that he would be capable ofsuch savagery.

The large rust-red palace buildings flankan open courtyard. Mahmood points outa Parchessi board, an inlaid chequer-likedesign in one area of the courtyard, wherethe emperor would sit on one side, while hisopponent on the other.

The extraordinary Diwan-I-Khas has foursandstone balconies situated high above ourheads, representing the Muslim, Christian,Hindu and Buddhist faiths, and they are alllinked by bridges to a central column, sym-bolic of spiritual unity.

The Emperor sat on a throne above thiscentral column and held debating sessionswith philosophers and intellectuals. Akbartried to establish a universal religion incorpo-rating the truths common to all faiths, whichhe labelled, “Din I’lahi”. But after his death,

this idealistic notion faded into obscurity. The Ankh Micholi palace has colonades

around which Mahmood says, the Emperor“did peek-a-boo” with the beauties in hisharem. It is also easy to imagine the Emperorand his court sitting on the terrace of the

Panch Mahal (five-tiered palace) listening toUrdu poetry, or the plaintive notes of a sitar.

Or perhaps looking on appreciatively asnautch girls thrummed their anklets to thebeat of tablas, their silhouettes dipping and

whirling against a flaming sunset sky.Later, we stand before the main entrance,

subdued by the sheer bulk of a 54-metre higharchway called the Buland Darwaza.

A Koranic inscription reads, “The world isa bridge; pass over it but build no house uponit.” Bees, unhindered by this lofty admoni-tion, have built gigantic hives, hanging darkand swollen like malignant tumours, againstthe inner ceiling of the archway.

And then, Fatehpur Sikri lays its finaltreasure before us: the exquisite shrine ofSalim Chishti. Fashioned out of white marble, sunlight filters through its intricately carvedmarble lattice-work screen. The tomb itselflies under a canopy inlaid with shimmeringmother of pearl.

Yet all this splendour was short lived. The furnace of summer and years of droughtreduced the city to a wasteland. The courtreluctantly moved to Delhi.

Today, the village of Fatehpur Sikri is ahuddle of poor hutments below the BulandDarwaza, and visitors now flock through theonce grand entrance archway, not to find anaudience at the court of Akbar, but to marvel

instead at his legacy of palaces and pavilionsthat have endured through time. The shrineof Salim Chisti continues to draw devotees— childless women of all faiths still comein pilgrimage, seeking the same blessing themighty Emperor craved more than 400 yearsago: the gift of a son.

According to the quarterly AmericanExpress Small Business Monitor,Canadian small business owners areincreasingly confident about the future, with 38 per cent of those polled willing totake above average or significant businessrisk in the next six months.

A whopping 90 per cent are confidenttheir businesses will grow over the sameperiod.

While extremely confident in the outlook for theirbusiness’ balance sheets, small business owners appearless enthused about taking care of their personal financ-es. According to Statistics Canada, fewer self-employedCanadians than paid employees report that they are

financially preparing for retirement (74per cent vs. 85 per cent), even thoughthe self-employed were more likely to beknowledgeable about finances.

It’s likely that some of this variance canbe attributed to the fact that entrepreneursare generally occupied full time with man-aging their businesses.

For such busy people, additional finan-cial decision-making has about as much

allure as an appendectomy. However, inadequate person-al financial planning will have a negative impact on thebusiness owner’s retirement and estate plans.

Financial planning for entrepreneurs tends to be quitecomplex, involving such factors as multifaceted estate

issues, tax considerations, and succession planning.Due care in determining a personal financial strategyinvolves understanding the business as it is currently andas it is forecast to be at retirement.

Then, investment portfolios can be constructed insynergy with the business. For instance, entrepreneurswith new start-ups or highly cyclical businesses mayestablish more conservative investment portfolios to off-set some of the risk in their companies. There may be atime when one needs to help the other.

Similarly, business owners should be conscious ofover concentration. With many of their eggs already inthe company basket, they need to be sure they aren’tduplicating exposure in their portfolios. A property man-agement company owner with extensive real estate hold-ings might rationalize, “It’s what I know,” and want tofill an investment portfolio with REITs, but that wouldcreate redundancy and add significant risk.

A comprehensive plan includes wealth managementsolutions that help determine investment planning, estateplanning, and risk management. Its development is nota single event. It is followed by a continuous monitoringand management process to ensure the plan adheres togoals. Some small business owners may delay retirementplanning due to concerns about the impact on their time.

Time should not be a cause for worry. Once all thenecessary information has been gathered, the bulk ofthe work is done by the advisor who builds the plan andmakes recommendations. The advisor can liaise directlywith the business owner’s team of professionals, such aslawyers and accountants, further reducing any drain ontime. Future monitoring involves planned meetings withthe advisor, and can take as little or as much time as thebusiness owner needs.

Thinking about, preparing and implementing a thor-ough financial plan is time well spent and it is betterdone sooner than later. Successful entrepreneurs under-stand the need in business for strategic planning, moni-toring those plans, and implementing tactics to supportthem. They are wise to apply the same logic to their per-sonal financial planning.

Ben Chaddock is back for the weekthat jump-started his professional cyclingcareer.

The Richmond native, who recentlywon his Canadian criterium champion-ship, shocked everyone with his victoryon the Tour de Delta prologue (time trial)event, is once again competing in B.C.Superweek, which started last week-end in Delta and includes other racesat Gastown, UBC, Burnaby and WhiteRock. It gives Chaddock ample opportu-nity to wear his new Canadian jersey as anational champion.

“Coming back as a national championis a very special honour,” said Chaddock,

who races professionally for TeamExergy.

He earned his pro contract with animpressive win at the Tour de Delta twoyears ago, topping Canadian Olympianand Europen-based Pro Tour rider SveinTuft, who also returns to BC Superweekthis year, in a prologue.

“In 2010, I knew I completed a greatprologue performance, but was in totalshock with the result,” Chaddock recalled.“That boost in confidence carried methrough the weekend and the rest of theyear.

“A result like that gives that extra posi-tive self-talk of ‘I know I am the strongestrider in the race over a certain distance.’So going into BC Superweek this year mygoals are centered around performing tothe best of my ability and just letting theresults take care of themselves.”

A former competitive skier and strongsprinter, Chaddock knows that wins won’tcome easy at B.C. Superweek this year, even with three strong teammates fromTeam Exergy, which won the inauguralUBC Grand Prix last summer, and hopesto defend that title this year.

With the historic Gastown Grand Prixalso back on the schedule, and $105,000up for grabs over nine races, Chaddockexpects a long list of top North Americanprofessional teams to send strong riders.

“Money talks. A lot of riders andteams have been talking about B.C.Superweek this spring, especially withthe return of Gastown to bolster the seriesinto a very impressive nine days of rac-ing,” said Chaddock, who didn’t race thelast Gastown Grand Prix in 2008, buthas been preparing by watching YouTubefootage.

“I know there will be teams of two tofour from all of the strongest criteriumteams in North America. We all know

each other well, as we race in the NCCand USACrits series together each week-end, but racing at home in Canada will beextra special. I look forward to enjoyingthe moments before and after the racewhile putting on a good show once thegun goes off.”

In addition to top pro teams, Chaddockcan expect some stiff competition fromfellow Canadians chasing his maple leafjersey as Criterium Champion.

That includes the riders who finishedbehind him at the National championships— Cody Canning, who rides for the localTrek Red Truck team, and Nic Hamilton,a Victoria native riding for Jelly Belly ProCycling — as well as some of Canada’stop cyclists, home from around the world

to race BC Superweek. That list is topped by Svein Tuft, an

eight-time Canadian Tim Trial champion, and Christian Meier, his teammate on theAustralia-based Orica-GreenEDGE ProTour team.

It also includes Ryan Anderson andWill Routley, who have been racing inEurope for Steve Bauer’s Spidertech pow-ered by C10 team, as well as a couplelocal pros on U.S.-based Team Optum p/bKelly Benefit Strategies — Marsh Cooperand Sebastien Salas, who like Chaddockused a strong showing at B.C. Superweekto earn a contract, and then won the Kingof the Mountain Jersey as top climber atthe prestigious Tour of California this

Wong wins her second B.C. Women’s Amateur titleRichmond golfer Christine Wong set a

72-hole scoring record to capture her secondB.C. Women’s Amateur title at the ChristinaLake Golf Club.

Coming off her third-round course recordseven-under 65, Wong closed out her impres-sive victory with a 2-under-par 70, 274 total(70-69-65-70-274), the lowest the champion-ship has witnessed since it went to a four-round format back in 2006. Ironically, theprevious record of 275 was held by anotherRichmond golfer — Kira Meixner — in2008.

The Quilchena Golf and Country Clubmember and standout at San Diego StateUniversity, staved off unrelenting pressure atthe onset by Port Coquitlam’s Soo-Bin Kim,who just wouldn’t seem to give up on thetitle.

Going into Friday’s final round, Wongknew she had to remain poised and in agroove if she wanted to take the crown.

“My whole routine from when I woke upand got to the course was exactly the sameas it has been all week although I was really

nervous going into the final round of theAmateur with the lead,” said the 20-year-old. “I struggled with my game on the firstsix holes, making two birdies then a doublebogey. I was obviously very nervous but wasable to get it back after that.”

Her lead looked like it was beginning toslip, not because of poor play, but thanks tobirdies from Kim on holes 4, 6, 7 and 10,bringing it to as little as three strokes.

“Soo-Bin [Kim] is an excellent player,a clutch player and was able to get a fewbirdies and narrow my lead, which made meeven more nervous,” said Wong. “I had totell myself that I still had a lead at that point.Right when she got [the lead] to three, I wasable to make three birdies in a row and get itback. I was more myself on the back nine.”

Her three birdies in a row on holes 11, 12and 13 added to Wong’s impressive domina-tion of the back nine, which saw her go atotal of -11 par on the inward half over thefour days of the championship.

She would close out the final five holeswith four pars and a lone bogey on the par

5, 430 yard 15th where she was admittedlyfeeling the heat of the lead and had to calmherself down.

“I looked down at my right hand on the15th and it was shaking like I have never seenit shake before, like I couldn’t even stop it,”laughed Wong. “I told myself that I have beenin this situation before and to simply get onthe green, two putt and move on to the nexthole.”

Wong was lucky to have had the previousexperience of winning, which she did so inback in 2010 by claiming her first Amateurtitle, as the course was set up difficult on thefinal day.

“The tee boxes were moved back and thepins tucked in the corners,” she added. “Thecourse was set up today harder than any otherday this week. I was able to hit it in the rightplaces when I needed to and made some keyputts to win the championship.”

As a member of Canada’s amateur team, anumber of other high profile summer eventsare on the horizon for Wong before she headsback to San Diego for her senior year.
