May was quite a month for Richmond curler Saman-tha Siu,
Shortly after being recognized as a co-winner of the Richmond Sports Awards’ athlete with a disability award presented at the annual gala May 7 at R.A. Mc-
Math Secondary School, Siu was Saturday presented with Curl BC’s Athlete with a Disability Award.
Siu won a bronze medal at the B.C. championshipsin 2014, which she upgraded to gold this year as amember of Team Austgarden. As well as her provincial success, Siu won the Wednesday evening mixed curl-ing league title with her teammates at the RichmondCurling Club.

Soccer star netsPresident’s Cup
Richmond soccer sensation Carlita Branion-Calles has received one of the University of Victoria’s highest athletic honours.
The President’s Cup is given annually to the outstanding student-athlete in fourth or fifth year who best combines scho-lastic achievement and athletic ability.
Branion-Calles was a true fifth-year player for Tracy David’s women’s soccer program this past season, excelling both on and off the pitch. Taking the status of student-athlete to an incredible level, Branion-Calles earned an impressive 8.7 GPA, on a nine-point scale, in kinesi-ology.
Co-captain of the team, the
midfielder helped guide the team to a second place finish in the Pacific Division with an 8-1-3 record. Known for her speed, vision and tenacity on the pitch, Branion-Calles tallied three goals and one assist this season and was a starter in all 12 regular season games.
The Hugh Boyd Secondary grad currently volunteers at the Total Knee and Hip Replacement Clinic at Rebalance and over the summer spent time volunteering with a Dementia Care Unit and their Walk and Talk program. Among helping coach, be a reg-ular Vikes ambassador and more Branion-Calles continues to show her ability to time manage and be a dedicated and success-ful student-athlete all around.
