RidgeRock Retaining Wall Systems combine thestringent design requirements of engineered retainingwalls with the beauty of architectural landscaping.

The RidgeRock Retaining Wall System was developed by soilretention specialists to meet the specific design requirements ofengineers, architects and owners. The proper design of efficient andeconomical retaining wall systems requires a strong workingknowledge of soil retention theory and practice. The developers ofthe RidgeRock concept have amassed over 25 years of soil reinforcement design experience. Specification guidelines: RidgeRock Retaining Wall SystemsPart 1: General

1.0 I DescriptionWork shall consist of furnishing all materials, labor, equipment, andsupervision to intall a segmental retaining wall system to the lines,grades, design and dimensions shown on the plans, or as establishedby the owner or owner's engineer.

Geosynthetics1.04 Delivery, Storage and Handling

A. The Contractor shall inspect the materials upon delivery toassure that the proper material has been received.

B. The Contractor shall store and handle materials so as to protectmaterials from damage. Damaged material shall not be incor-porated into the segmental retaining wall.

Part 2: Materials

2.0 I Concrete Segmental Retaining Wall (SRW) UnitsA. SRW units shall be RidgeRock Retaining Wall Units.B. Concrete segmental retaining wall units shall conform to the

requirements ofNCMA TEK 2-4 and have a minimum 28 dayscompressive strength strength onooo psi and a maximumabsorption of 10 pcf as determined in accordance with ASTMC 140. The units shall have adequate freeze/thaw protectionand meet the requirements of ASTM C 1262.

C. All SRW units shall be sound and free of cracks or other de-fects that would interfere with the placement or performance ofthe units.

D. SRW unit dimensions shall not differ more than ±lIS inch asmeasured in accordance with ASTM C 140.

E. Cap adhesive shall meet the requirements of Ridge Rock Re-taining Walls Inc.

2.02 Geosynthetic ReinforcementA. Geosynthetic Reinforcement shall consist of those high

strength geogrid or geotextiles designed for use in segmentalretaining wall systems.

B. The geogrid type, strength and placement shall be as shown onthe plans. The design properties of the geogrid/RidgeRocksystem shall be determined by the procedures outlined in theGeosynthetic Research Institute, GRl-GG4, and NCMASRWU-1.

2.03 Drainage AggregateDrainage aggregate shall be a clean crushed stone or granular fillmeeting the following gradation:

The reinforced backfill shall be free of debris, and consist of inor-ganic, low plasticity soil.

Part 3: Installation

3.01 ExcavationA. Contractor shall excavate to the lines and grades shown on the

grading plans.3.02 Foundation Preparation

A. The foundation soil shall be excavated to the leveling pad di-mensions indicated on the plans.

B. The foundation soil shall be evaluated by the engineer to con-firm the design bearing strength of the foundation soils. Soilsnot meeting the design bearing strength shall be replaced withsuitable fill.

3.03 Leveling Pad InstallationA. A minimum 6 inch thick layer of compacted granular material

shall be placed as shown on the construction drawings.B. The granular base shall be compacted to 95% ofthe maximum

standard Proctor density. The base shall be capable ofprovid-ing a firm level bearing pad on which to place the first courseof Ridge Rock Segmental Retaining Wall Units.

3.04 Retaining Wall Unit InstallationA. All materials shall be installed at the elevation and orientation

shown on the plans.B. The retaining wall units shall be installed adjacent to each

other along the alignment of the wall.C. Fill the RidgeRock Retaining Wall Units with drainage aggre-

gate (Section 2.03).D. Extend the drainage aggregate a minimum of 12 inches behind

the retaining wall units.E. Clean the top of the units so that they are free of aggregate.F. Offset the second course of Ridge Rock units, and pull them

'""- forward, so that the RidgeRock Shear Key engages with thelower RidgeRock course. Repeat the above procedure until theproper height is achieved.

G. Terminate the end of the wall by turning the units at a radiusinto the embankment.

3.05 Cap Unit InstallationA. Place the Cap Unit over the last course of retaining wall units.B. Use a high strength cap adhesive designed exclusively for seg-

mental retaining walls to bond the cap to the wall.3.06 Geosynthetic Installation

A. Install the geosynthetic reinforcement at the elevations shownon the construction drawings.

B. The geosynthetic shall be installed by placing the primarystrength direction of the product over the RidgeRock Unit(extended to the face of the unit), placing the next course ofretaining wall units over the geosynthetic and pulling thegeosynthetic taut. Anchor the end of the geosynthetic withpins or stakes to maintain tension prior to fill placement. .

3.07 Backfill PlacementA. The backfill shall be placed in maximum loose lift thicknesses

oflO inches, and compacted to 95% of Standard Proctor den-sity.

B. Backfill shall be spread and compacted in such a manner thateliminates the development of slack in the geosynthetic.

C. Only hand operated compaction equipment shall be allowedwithin 3 feet of the front of the wall face.

D. Tracked construction equ ipment shall not operate directly uponthe geosynthetic reinforcement. A minimum backfill thicknessof6 inches is required prior to operation of tracked vehiclesover the geosynthetic reinforcement. Turning of tracked vehi-cles shall be kept to a minimum to prevent fill and geosyntheticdisplacement.

E. Rubber tired equipment may pass over the geosynthetic rein-forcement at slow speeds less than 10 mph. Sudden brakingand turning must be avoided.

F. At the end of the day's operation, slope the backfill away fromthe wall to direct runoff away from the wall face. The contrac-tor shall not allow surface runoff to enter the wall constructionsite.

3.08 Drainage Fill PlacementA. The drainage fill shall be placed as directed on the construction

plans.B. Install a minimum 3 inch drainage pipe behind the base of the

wall to collect drainage from the drainage fill.
