Since its inception, Make-A-Wish Foundation International has granted over 350,000 wishes globally and more than 1,200 wishes locally. These are incredible statistics and one that shows the importance and impact this organization and its volunteers have had in providing “hope, strength, and joy” to those who need them most — the children who are beneficiaries of wishes.

We cannot begin to imagine the many challenges these children deal with in their daily lives. Having a day to see one’s true wish come true, is

as much magical as it is powerful. To a Wish Child, the wish can be so powerful it can literally produce enough positivity, strength and

will to overcome life’s very tough challenges. I find this amazing. It gives me “hope, strength, and joy” knowing the impact and power of a wish.

I speak from experience myself. When I had the chance to grant a wish, I found it very heart-felt and enriching. What a special day it was! My Wish Child wanted to see the beach and sea, to stay in a hotel, he liked sports cars, and wanted a great day with his family. On the Wish Day, we surprised him with as many Ferraris at the front of his home as could be counted, and took a ride around Singapore in a convoy. It felt like Formula 1. I think I felt more excited than anyone!

We arrived at the world’s largest aquarium in Sentosa and were escorted around like VIPs. No lines for us! It was amazing to see so many different kinds of fish. We then proceeded to Coastes by Siloso Beach and enjoyed a great meal. To round up the evening, we arrived at the Sentosa Resort, where the family stayed for the weekend in a super-sized suite filled with balloons. It felt special for all.

Granting wishes touches many lives; not just for the children who receive them, but for the sponsors who donate funds to finance wishes; and volunteers who donate their time to grant wishes.

It was an experience that I will never forget, and I would encourage more volunteers to take active roles in Make-A-Wish Singapore.

Chris Greicius, a brave 7-year-old boy, from Phoenix, Arizona, was the inspiration for the Make-A-Wish® mission to grant wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses.

Chris had leukaemia and his greatest wish was to become a policeman. His dream was realised when his family, friends and local community organised a tailor-made uniform, a ride in a helicopter and completed his VIP treatment with the presentation of his policeman’s badge.

All involved were so touched by this experience that they vowed that granting wishes and making dreams come true for these incredibly brave children should continue.

To date, more than 350,000 wishes have been granted worldwide and many children have experienced the power of a wish.

Our aim is to go beyond the mere delivery of each child’s wish. Instead, we hope to create an unforgettable and meaningful experience in making these wishes come true. In their fight to overcome their illnesses, we know that such memories are a source of joy, encouragement, hope and even strength to these children. It is our goal, in Singapore, to reach every medically eligible child.

We need you!

AzriWhen Azri’s parents were informed that their little boy had Fallot’s Tetrology, which is a congenital heart defect, Azri underwent surgery in 2009. He has spent the last eight years battling his illness bravely. On Azri’s ninth birthday, he wanted to have a superhero birthday party. He was whisked to a Superhero and Pop Art-themed Restaurant, suited up in his very own Iron Man costume and dueled with other super heroes.

The team also organised and gathered everyone in games like Superhero Bingo, ‘Guess the Superheroes & Villians’ and ‘Pin the Star on Captain America’s Shield’ - what a blast!

Thank you, Hungry Heroes, Pause for a Cause, Twilight Bakes, and Taufik, for fulfilling Azri’s wish.

Ridhwan10-year-old Wish Kid Ridhwan, who has Pfieffer syndrome, had always enjoyed (and still does) visits to the airport to watch planes take off and land but had never been in an airplane himself.

Pfieffer syndrome is a rare genetic disorder characterized by the premature fusion of certain bones of the skull, which prevents further growth of the skull and affects the shape of the head and face.

When his Wish Granters found out about his love to fly, they immediately got in touch with the Republic of Singapore Flying Club, and had a personal pilot in the form of Captain Lingam to take him, his younger sister and mother in an airplane.

The epic birthday outing for him and his family started at the Republic Of Singapore Flying Club with a private 20-minute plane ride over Singapore.

Handed his own head set, Ridhwan was a picture of concentration while hearing instructions from the pilot.

After an exhilarating flight, Ridhwan and his family were checked into the Festival Hotel on Sentosa to start their staycation, visiting Universal Studios and the acquarium.

Finally, Ridhwan visited Kidzania Singapore where he got to don a pilot’s uniform and be a pilot all over again.

Thank you, everyone who made Ridhwan’s wish come true one he will always remember.

JarrenSix-year-old Jarren has congenital hypomylinating neuropathy. It is a neurological disorder present at birth, and symptoms may include respiratory difficulty, muscle weakness and incoordination, poor muscle tone (neonatal hypotonia), absence of reflexes (areflexia), difficulty in walking (ataxia), and / or impaired abilities to feel or move part of the body.

In spite of the limiting capabilities to move, this illness is not slowing Jarren down in any way. The little dynamite of a boy has a multitude of loves, like horsing around with his older brother, playing board games with his parents, and watching the Disney channel. So, what better way to make his wish come true by giving Jarren a Hong Kong Disneyland vacation.

At Disneyland, he visited every inch of the magic kingdom.

RaphaelNine-year-old Raphael has acute lymphoblastic leukaemia but this has not stopped him from being active! In fact, when we discovered his wish to have a Nerf War party, we thought, what better way to prepare him for his party than a Nerf War Bootcamp!

And thanks to his form teacher Mrs Edwin, and school principal, Mrs Lim-Chua Siow Ling, and with some deft arrangements, we transformed the school hall into an obstacle course, complete with camouflage netting and Nerf guns.

On his Wish Party day, Raphael, in a soldier’s uniform, was ferried by a convoy of Land Rovers.Wish Granters: Christie, Jonathan and Hao Ren

Haziq is a 15-year-old boy diagnosed with biliary atresia at birth, a rare disease of the liver and bile ducts that occurs in infants and delays physical and intellectual development. At just two years old, he fell into a coma and awoke months later blind and paralysed. Treatment did not seem to work so doctors recommended music therapy and his mother chose to play music from Hi-5. Haziq immediately responded to the music. When Make-A-Wish heard of his love for this group, we got in touch with Hi-5, who promptly invited Haziq to their concert when they were in Singapore.

Wish Children OutingSome 60 Wish Kids and their families got to spend a day at KidZania Singapore. There was something for everyone that day. The kids were spread out throughout the complex, having fun and learning at the same time. Many could not wait to try their hands at baking; others learned what it took to be cabin crew and pilots; some donned lab coats and a few took on roles as courier personnel.

Thank you @Coherent Singapore Pte Ltd, for underwriting the entire day’s outing!

To our Wish Kids and their families, we hope you had heaps of fun!
