A healthy mix
Sound prospects for skilled workers, high
potentials and those looking for a new
challenge: Over 100 leading international
companies offer first-rate jobs.
The current upswing is underpinned
by a diverse array of sectors and a
healthy mix of large corporations,
small companies, medium-sized
businesses and skilled trades.
Fertile soil for solid craftsman-
ship: Skilled trades remain an
important branch of the city‘s
economy.
The Munich region is one of the most attractive business hubs in Europe. Forceful growth here is generated by around 92,000 companies, including DAX heavyweights such as BMW, Siemens, Munich Re, Allianz, MTU Aero Engines and Infineon. Global play-ers of the caliber of Microsoft, Intel, GlaxoSmithKline, Amazon, Fujitsu, Google, Oracle and Tesla are also at home here – all guaranteeing highly paid jobs with secure prospects.
Other powerful drivers of growth include midsized businesses with a broad foot-print across all industries, skilled trades and a host of small, local businesses. More than a million people earn their living in Munich, whose gross domestic product adds up to over 100,000 euros per employee. Better still, the unemploy-ment rate is at a record low of just 3%.
Other statistics underscore the appeal of the Bavarian capital: In the latest IW Institute’s Germany-wide city ranking, Munich occupies first and second place on economic performance and dynamics respectively. Roughly 1.5 million people live here today – a figure expected to rise to 1.8 million by 2035. For young, well-trained employees in particular, the Bavarian metropolis seems to have a magnetic attraction.

Munich on the move
Situated right in the heart of Europe, Munich is a cosmopolitan, international city whose metropolitan region em- braces 27 districts and six independ-ent cities. Nearly all German and European cities are within fast, easy reach. Winner of multiple awards, Munich Airport is a major air traffic hub from which 100 airlines carry around 43 million passengers a year to over 260 destinations in more than 70 countries.
The Bavarian capital also boasts excellent road and rail links. IC and ICE trains provide speedy and direct connections to Berlin, Rome, Paris, Zurich, Budapest, Prague and other key European cities. Meanwhile, a well-developed freeway network quickly brings motorists into the city – or out into all of Germany and its European neighbors.
Local public transport keeps passenger streams flowing smoothly. And given Munich‘s global appeal as a trade fair venue, it is also a popular, stress-free option to get international visitors to their congresses, shows and events.
Some 50 trade fairs for capital goods, consumer goods and new technolo-gies draw about three million visitors to this vibrant city every year. Leading international trade fairs held here include AUTOMATICA, BAU, bauma, electronica, EXPO REAL, Intersolar Europe, ISPO Munich and analytica. The exhibition grounds and the Inter-national Congress Center ICM can be reached quickly by subway, bus or car.

of life right in the city center.
Whoo-hoo! Plunge into the
refreshing waters of the Isar River.
The coolest surfers ride the wave
on the Eisbach even in winter.
Rich diversity between meadows and mountains
A recent Mercer study ranks Munich as the city with the best quality of life in Germany. And no wonder: Where else can you find city life, countryside and recreation as closely interwoven as they are here?
With its broad, flat banks and spacious riverside meadows, the Isar is a blue lifeline where you can stroll, paddle and cycle to your heart‘s content. Countless extensive parklands make the whole city a green oasis: the Olympic Park, West-park, Nymphenburg Park and Hellabrunn Zoo to name but a few. First among equals, however, is unquestionably the English Garden!
Germany’s largest urban park enchants locals and tourists alike with its pictur-esque streams, lakes and meadows, not to mention its cafés and beer gardens. Relax over a mug of beer or an apple spritzer under blossoming chestnut trees and experience pure joie de vivre! Eisbach surfing is a world-famous attraction too: All year round, ambitious board artists balance atop the ultimate standing wave.
Munich’s surroundings are equally leg-endary. The charming Alpine landscape is full of wonderful opportunities for hiking, climbing or biking in clean air and the great outdoors. Lake Starnberg and Lake Ammersee, wildlife and bird sanctuaries plus a multitude of attractions and natural beauty spots have something to delight literally everyone.
Beauty beyond words:
The foothills of the Alps
are heaven on earth.

Munich is Germany’s second-largest university venue, with more than 120,000 students and 17 universities and academies. The Ludwig Maximilian University (LMU) and the Technical University of Munich (TUM) are recog- nized as elite universities and rank among the top 100 in the QS World University Ranking. Smart ideas mature more quickly here: New businesses launched in Munich – many of them spin-offs from TUM – regularly rank among the top 50 start-ups.
A raft of accelerators, incubators and events serves to pool the strengths of entrepreneurs, tech industries and academia. The Munich Urban Colab (MUC) is a flagship project, with co- working spaces, living labs and a high-tech prototype workshop being built on an 11,000-m2 plot. Starting in 2020, start-ups will team up with scientists and creative minds at this venue to design the city of the future.
Munich is also a world-leader in re-search and development, trailing only London and Paris. The Fraunhofer Institute, the Max Planck Institute, the DLR German Aerospace Center, the FfE Research Center for Energy Eco-nomics and the Helmholtz Center all embody the city‘s scientific prowess and innovative strength.
Reach for the stars: Aerospace
research is another of Munich‘s
strong suits, thanks to cooperation
between DLR and Airbus.
A stroke of genius: TUM alone has
brought forth 16 Nobel prize winners in
physics, chemistry and medicine.
Spirit of invention: 17% of all German
patents are registered in Munich –
three times the national average.
The smartest ideas come from Munich’s start-up community

Culture & tradition
Munich is the most livable city in Germany – and for many it is also the most lovable. The lifestyle magazine Monocle put Munich at the top of its ranking of cities with the highest qual-ity of life and the New York Times also loves this „picture-postcard city“. It is true: Choose any measure – the econ-omy, education, infrastructure, public safety, culture or the quality of life – in all of these Munich is a real champion. The same goes for football of course, where Bayern Munich is one of the world‘s most successful clubs. Not to mention the Oktoberfest, which has been copied around the world – but nothing beats the original.
Straddling the Isar River, Munich combines a homely, traditional appeal with the flair of a cosmopolitan city, a thoroughly modern lifestyle and world-class culture. Its people are friendly, down-to-earth and open-minded. And there is no end of things to see and do: the towering Frauenkirche cathe-dral, the central Marienplatz square, beer gardens, the fabled Hofbräuhaus, the English Garden, the traditional Viktualienmarkt (food market) and luxury shopping in the city‘s exquisite retail districts. Meanwhile, students shape the vibrant, charming and laid-back scene in the hippest quarters: Maxvorstadt, Schwabing and the area around the Glockenbachviertel, for example. The bar and nightclub scene is similarly popular. Whether you are into house, techno or electronic music, a hundred or so clubs leave you no shortage of dancefloors. Connoisseurs and foodies of all persuasions likewise thrill to the singular culinary diversity of Munich, where local and traditional influences blend with Mediterranean and international cuisine.
Red-hot passion: Soccer fans aren’t
the only ones who know the world-
famous Allianz Arena, home
to the most important matches.
Masterpieces of historical architecture
shape the traditional cityscape, while
superlative modern architecture –
BMW Welt, Allianz Arena, the Swiss
Re buildings, the Brandhorst Museum,
the Götz Collection and the Pinakothek
der Moderne, for example – reflects the
new face of Munich.
The Viktualienmarkt is the beating
heart of Munich‘s culinary scene, a
highlight at any time of year with
its dazzling display of delicacies.
Incidentally, the German word
Viktualien means victuals, i.e. food
and provisions.
Want to live life to the full?Look no further!

The future belongs to the Internet of Things, and Munich is setting the pace! For everything from Industry 4.0 to connected autonomous driving, the Bavarian capital is home to key global players of the caliber of Siemens, BMW, IBM, Microsoft, Amazon and Google. Alongside these industry heavyweights, successful IoT startups such as Blickfeld, Konux, tado, ProGlove, Tacterion, Bragi, NavVis, Parce and eGym regularly land both awards and venture capital.
The Industry 4.0 Center of Excellence at the TUM School of Management conducts ground-breaking research into the Internet of Things. Indeed, the whole city is going smart: More than 100 companies and institutions have joined forces on the „Digital City Munich“ platform to drive the digital transformation. The launch of The Munich School of Robotics and Machine Intelligence (MSRM) at TUM also gives the city a place at the top table in the fields of artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics. At the same university, the TUM Science Center for Electro- mobility is working on energy-efficient electric cars for the mass market.
Connected vehicles and autonomous
