RUAG – Infantry Ammunition
In the calibre 5.56 x 45 RUAG Ammotec has many years of
experience as a supplier for the Swiss army. Worldrenowned
as one of the most accurate rifle cartridges available, the Gw
Pat 90 has formed the basis of the RUAG Ammotec’s latest
advancements. Modern warfare has shown, that the current
operations call for increased power and accuracy to one
kilometre. The NATO 7.62 x 51 ammunition which offers
accurate firepower in a relatively compact weapons system.
A Culture of Precision
RUAG’s excellence is based upon 150 year history of producing
high quality infantry ammunition. The experiences gained from
generations of expertise and attention to detail have become a
part of the RUAG culture and have seamlessly been integrated
into today’s modern manufacturing processes. This knowledge,
coupled with the selection of the purest materials, form the
foundation of developing a high quality cartridge. An advanced
understand of simulation and modeling software allows RUAG
engineers to optimise these elements in producing an ideal round.
RUAG cartridges are:
• manufactured to meet extremely close tolerances
• individually inspected ensure the quality and
consistency of key parameters
• include optimally matched components
• completely sealed and waterproof for infantry applications
Case Formation
A cartridge which must ensure an absolutely reliable function in a
great variety of different weapons and in various climates requires
a case of the highest quality. Long shelf live depends significantly
on the quality of the case and its sealing.
Projectile Manufacturing
The most critical element of a jacketed bullet is to have the lead
core completely and uniformly encased by the highest quality
covering possible. RUAG’s advanced coupling techniques ensures
the core and the jacket are perfectly joined, preventing and
unwanted variances, and maintain balance. Strict metallurgical
controls ensure the proper ductility and formability of the lead,
minimizing inaccuracies, and maintaining performance of the
projectile.
Final Assembly and Quality Control
After the perfectly formed components are exactingly
assembled into the completed cartridge, each batch is tested to
ensure between round consistency based upon the unique firing
capabilities of the weapon. In addition, every round is carefully
inspected, ensuring the quality and consistency of the primer and
powder.
These versatile cartridges can effectively be used in various
missions, from single accuracy fire from snipers to rapid fire from
fully automatic weapons. Ammotec has worked intensely to
develop a full range of 12.7 x 99 rounds. Whether used for
training purposes in a confined space, or for highly accurate
long range shooting from long distances, all RUAG cartridges are
designed for accurate, repeatable performance, even under
extreme operating conditions.

5.56 x 45 – Dual-Core for Maximum Power
RUAG Ammotec produces the most accurate infantry cartridges
in the world. High quality standards ensure excellent reliability
and dependability that meet or exceed NATO guidelines.
Gunners can fully depend on their ammunition in any operating
environment. Specially designed for fully and semi automatic
weapons, these rounds provide excellent penetration on hard
targets, and provide exceptional performance, even compared to
full metal jacket 7.62 x 51 bullets.

The following cartridges with full metal jacket bullets are mission
approved and have been in service with various armed forces. All
rounds are subject to the strictest quality control criteria to meet
international standards.
Their design ensures a long weapon durability due to minimal
barrel wear and smoke residue build up. The muzzle flash is
minimised for a better concealment of shooters and gunners.
The most important point for choosing a primer is its reliability.
RUAG has addressed this issue since 1928 with the invention
of the most reliable, corrosion-free SINOXID-primer. However
standard primers contain lead styphenate, which shooters can get

5.56 x 45 – Blank Ammunition for Combat Simulation
A key element of basic solider training around the world has
been machine gun and assault rifle battle simulation using blank
cartridges. The Blank Firing Attachment (BFA) seals the barrel
at the muzzle to control gas pressure and ensure recoil of the
weapons function accurately and safely. In addition, it prevents
the emission of hot powder particles or foreign bodies, and
mitigates the pressure of the exiting gases in the firing direction.
Laser sensors provided by RUAG Defence can detect laser
signals transmitted along the firing axis, collecting hit results, and
indicating injuries with audible signals. The simulated battle can
be extended to the brigade level, and may even include the use
of mechanised infantry troops and their vehicles. Electronic data
such as GPS location information and real time statuses can be
collected and analysed after training.

Plastic Blank cartridges can be used in a great
variety of different weapons. They are very
light and contain only little metal which al-
lows a different waste disposal concept.

Brass Blank cartridges have a greater
toughness than plastic blanks which can
be an advantage when fired from machine
guns because they allow higher operating

12.7 x 99 – Training in a Limited Operating Area
Application
Tighter defense budgets force the reduction of available training
areas. This significantly impacts training with 12.7 x 99 rounds,
which have an extended effective range and consequently
require a large safe zone beyond the danger zone. RUAG’s «Short
Range Technology» drastically reduces the effective range,
providing great benefits when training in a limited operating
area, especially on flat terrain.
The high quality 12.7 x 99 Short Range Training Cartridge:
• Effective range: 600 m
• Preserves the flight characteristics
• Good accuracy like all RUAG cartridges
• First-class function in all major types of heavy machine guns
• Also available with short range tracer ammunition

The proven tracer variant corresponds to the standard bullet and
can be linked in variable configurations.
The Principle
The plastic tip, which ensures a proper weapon function, is
discharged by the resulting gas pressure. With a poor aerodynamic
profile, this projectile decelerates much faster than a conventional
round, significantly reducing the danger zone.
Danger Zone
The maximum operational range of the 12.7 x 99 is 2 km; however,
for safety purposes in training, requires a danger zone of 7 km. In
2000

comparison, the Short Range Training Round requires the use of a
danger zone of only 4 km, or even less with the 7.62 x 51 caliber.
