I – INTRODUCTION - Historical and Contextual background

Mathew 5:21 to 48 focuses on what the law teaches, WHAT MEN BELIEVE. He is talking here about INSIDE MORAL RIGHTOUESNESS through 6 illustrations

Mathew 6:1 to 18 focuses on the practice of the law, WHAT MEN DO. In here Jesus gives three illustrations to emphasize his point

A.) Acts towards others (vs. 2 to 4) – Giving

B.) Acts towards God (vs. 5 to 15) – Praying

C.) Acts towards ourselves (16 to 18) – Fasting

Once again Jesus here contrast the true teaching of God from the hypocritical, emphasis on the outside teaching of the Pharisees. This time he discusses OUTSIDE FORMAL RIGHTOUSNESS.

Page 5: Right side out part 1

I – A WARNING ABOUT FALSE RIGHTOUSNESS

Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven. (vs.1)

-This verse introduces the section on the forms of religious righteousness

“Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men” (Isaiah 29:13)

To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto me? saith the LORD: I am full of the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts; and I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of he goats.

Bring no more vain oblations; incense is an abomination unto me; the new moons and sabbaths, the calling of assemblies, I cannot away with; it is iniquity, even the solemn meeting. Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hateth: they are a trouble unto me; I am weary to bear them.

And when ye spread forth your hands, I will hide mine eyes from you: yea, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear: your hands are full of blood.

Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes; cease to do evil;

Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow.

Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. (Isaiah 1:11 to 18)

II – THE PRACTICE AND REWARD OF FALSE GIVING Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. (Vs 2)

(Cebuano)

-A hypocrite (hupokrites) was originally a Greek actor who wore a mask that portrayed an exaggerated waythe role was being dramatized

III – THE PRACTICE AND REWARD OF TRUE GIVING But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly. (vs. 3 and 4)

(Cebuano)

PRINCIPLES OF TRUE GIVING:

1.) Giving from the heart is investing with God & further results in Spiritual blessings

Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again. (Luke 6:38)

Spiritual blessings - Luke 16: 11 to 12

Page 10: Right side out part 1

PRINCIPLES OF TRUE GIVING:

2.) Genuine giving is to be sacrificial – Generosity is not measured by the size of the gift by its size in comparison to what is possessed.

And Jesus sat over against the treasury, and beheld how the people cast money into the treasury: and many that were rich cast in much. And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing. And he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury: For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living. (Mark 12:41 to 44)

Page 11: Right side out part 1

PRINCIPLES OF TRUE GIVING:

3.) Giving must come from the heart and is to be personally determined

Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver. (2 Cor. 9:7)

CONCLUSION

As in every area of righteousness, the key is the heart, the inner attitude that motives what we say and do. Public righteousness is not to be rejected but it is to be done in the spirit of love humility and sincerity.
