When surush started school in erbil, a teacher beat him in front of the class and told him he was a ‘kafir’ (infidel) like his father.

His mother and father have received numerous death threats for becoming Christians – even his younger sister, sevda, came home asking why her teacher said their family was going to ‘burn’ for being Christians. she was too afraid to go to school and stopped attending for the rest of the year.

Most playtimes end with toys stolen and the children beaten or scorned.

“How can a 9-year-old not have friends?” surush’s mother asks. “What kind of a man will he grow up to be?”

Open Doors wants to give displaced children like surush a hope for the future. that’s why we offer trauma counselling, emergency relief and income-generation loans to kick-start small businesses that provide for whole families.

Behind the headlines our Christian brothers and sisters are isolated, fearful, harassed, disadvantaged, suffering and dying for their faith. they are denied their freedom to worship, and freedom to share their faith.

this is an historic moment; the future of the church in the arab World is in the balance. We are calling young people around the UK and Ireland to pray with them, to support and strengthen them. to stop observing and start participating, to join the story.

the arab spring is in danger of becoming a ‘winter of persecution’ for Christians in the arab World. Freedom denied, lives under threat - they are crying out to God for their future.
