rights of mother earth

2
Universal Declaration of Rights of Mother Earth The proposal basically views Earth as an entitywhich has a life of its own, one which nourishes all the creatures as its offspring. In simple terms our planet earth has been considered as a mother who consciously takes care of her offspring by providing all the resources and maintaining parameters like atmospheric composition and surface temperature atlevels which are conducive for existence of life. Thus Mother Earth should also enjoy all the fundamental rights currently being enjoyed only by human beings. The declaration actually stems from a theory known as Gaia Theory (Gaia is the Greek goddess of Earth) which was originally proposed by Dr. James Lovelock. This theory says that all the systems on Earth are biologically interconnected and they all work together to develop an ecological equilibrium. Thus Earth along with all the living organisms, oceans, atmosphere and rocks constitute Mother Earth, which is as much a living being as us humans. Salient Features of Proposal y Preamble All nations and the people inhabiting these nations accept and understand that Mother Earth is an indivisible community of interrelated and independent beings and that well being of one species is not possible without well being of the entire system. y Article 1 Mother Earth is a living being and so has some inherent rights just as any other living being. y Article 2 The inherent rights include the right to life, to be respected, to be free of contamination, to maintain identity and integrity etc. y Article 3 Human beings must recognize and respect the rights of all other beings and life-forms including Mother Earth. It should be ensured that no human activity disturbs the ecological equilibrium that sustains all life forms on Earth. y Article 4 The term being includes ecosystems, natural communities, species and all other natural entities which exist as part of Mother Earth. Implications y The proposal seeks to promote the idea that humans should stop considering themselves as a superior species. This is in stark contrast with the anthropocentric view of nature where humans are central to every system. Human beings will gradually understand their relationship with other systems that are an integral part of Mother Earth. y For businesses, accepting this proposal can have far-reaching implications. In absence of any guidance businesses often act irresponsibly and get away with violations. Now businesses will

have to ensure that they do not violate the inherent rights of nature. This requires a proactive

rather than reactive approach towards ecological issues.

Positives of the proposal

y  The proposal focuses on the intrinsic value of all the organisms rather than value based on their

degree of usefulness to humans. In this respect it is inline with concept of deep ecology. It

advocates conservation of all species and their habitat as every species plays a vital role in

keeping Mother Earth alive.

y  It has also been written that we have to take concrete steps urgentlyif we really want to control

the degradation of environment.

y  The concept of fundamental rights for all life-forms (including Mother Earth) is coherent with

idea of human rights. It follows quite logically that we humans can enjoy our rights only as long

as we do not violate the rights of other species or nature.

y The proposal aims to promote harmony even within human speciesby advocating abolition of weapons which threaten the existence of life on earth.

Negatives of the proposal

y  The proposal takes a very strong stand against capitalism. Considering the fact that major

economies in the world today are capitalist free-market economies, the ideas proposed in the

declaration might be difficult to implement. The proposal could have looked at more practical

solutions involving all the stakeholders.

y  The idea of Earth as a living form has not gained much acceptance from the researchers. There

have been some studies which support this concept but the opponents of the idea largely

dismiss it as an unscientific movement.
