In June 2011, Righttime Medical Care CEO and Chief Pediatrician Robert G. Graw, Jr., M.D., initiated an innovative task force, known as the Concussion Consortium, with the goal of protecting student-athletes from head injury. Formed as a result of groundbreaking legislation passed in Maryland in May 2011, the group is comprised of top neurologists, orthopedists, neuropsychologists, educators, coaches and certied athletic trainers who meet regularly to develop protocol for diagnosing, managing and treating concussions.

Maryland became the 18th state to pass the HB 858 and SB 771 laws, which were created to protect student-athletes playing sports at public schools and on Parks & Recreation-owned land. e law is modeled aer Washington state’s Zackery Lystedt Law, named for a student who nearly died aer sustaining a concussion while playing football.

Months of discussion and planning by the Concussion Consortium resulted in the launch of HeadFirst Sports Injury and Concussion Care. HeadFirst opened the doors to its rst Care Center in April 2012, adjacent to Righttime Medical Center in Annapolis, Maryland. Today, mostRighttime Care Centers have a HeadFirst clinic.

e program includes post-injury medical evaluations for patients of all ages, including steps for a safe return to play, work or school, as well as neurocognitive baseline testing for sports teams and individuals. e HeadFirst medical team also oers support to trainers and coaches and a commu-nity concussion awareness program.
