  • BRIEFLogo + posters + t-shirts + medals

    CLIENTTriple Bull BJJ Open

    CategoryMartial arts tournaments

SynopsisIve been designing the communication materials for this martial arts tournament since their first edition, back in May 2012.

Each new tournament gives me a chance to try different compositions for posters, t-shirts, medals and much more.

The biggest advantage of working closely with the final customer, the competitors and instructors, is that the feedback is very real.

The concept for the logo was to acknowledge the major sponsor, Triple Bull, and link its image to a winner figure.

Triple Bull is a surf shop company but now, with the success of the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competitions, is also recognised as a strong martial arts tournaments brand.

  • BRIEFTour logo + album cover + poster + concert ticket

    CLIENTBen Hardie Trio

    CategoryMusic band

SynopsisThe idea for this project was to use typographic elements to create all collaterals.

Run Away was the song suggested by the band as the album title. After deciding on the name for the album and tour the next step was to research typographic approaches for the theme.

I had an idea of using shoelaces to represent the movement and freedom present on this two-word expression.

The band agreed with the concept and I started experimenting with photos of coloured shoelaces forming the letters.

The result is a flexible layout that can be adapted to different types of media.

  • BRIEFLogo + style guide + promotional materials + signage + mobile app + webpage

    CLIENTMarrickville Metro Shopping Centre

    CategoryShopping Centre

SynopsisMarrickville Metro approached TAFE Design Centre Enmore with an opportunity for students to design a new branding strategy for them.

Meet you at Metro is the strategy that I proposed. A simple but powerful expression.

The focus of this new strategy would be provide friendly service, an enjoyable shopping experience, quality products and a community oriented ambience.

The new Metro logo is inspired on the infinity symbol, representing their ongoing loyalty to their clients and the community.

The new symbol also represents the different colours and cultures united to build a place for people to shop, to meet up and to enjoy.

  • BRIEFAbu Dhabi Trials Magazine 2011

CLIENTAustralasia Abu Dhabi Pro Jiu Jitsu Trials

    CategoryMartial arts tournaments

SynopsisFor the 2011 edition of the Abu Dhabi Trials the organisers approached me with the intention of creating an A4 publication featuring articles about past editions, success stories, gyms profiles and commercial ads.

I am glad a took the project as I could learn a lot about the martial arts industry and also about the printing process.

The Abu Dhabi Trials Mag 2011 was a success. Competitors, instructors and sponsors complimented the organisers for the initiative.

  • BRIEFYouth Magazine contents double spread + interview double spread

CLIENTTAFE Design Centre Enmore - Graphic Design Diploma

    CategorySurf Magazine

SynopsisIt was a fun project to work on. I had to create a magazine that appeals to young demographics. My choice was a sports publication specialised in surf and water sports.

My design concept was to use big images on the background, making it very exciting for the readers.

Blue and yellow are the most predominant colours, representing the sun, the ocean and the sand.

  • BRIEFAdult magazine contents single spread + feature double spread

CLIENTTAFE Design Centre Enmore - Graphic Design Diploma

    CategoryEntertainment Magazine

SynopsisA project that gave me the opportunity to try different layout options and explore various compositions.

My final art is a dynamic layout to match up the personality of Bono, featured on the pages of Why Not magazine.

  • BRIEFAnnual Report 2013-14 - 40 pages booklet

    [Design + photography]

    CLIENTSylvanvale Foundation

    CategoryDisability Service Provider

SynopsisThe client wanted to create a document that not only informs about the companys achievements but also celebrates the people they care for.

I had the guidance of Fran Connelley, marketing specialist, to design a beautiful report that is engaging, modern and easy to read.

Another personal achievement with this project is that majority of the photographs were shot by me, including the front cover.

  • BRIEFPackaging + brochure + sample flyer

    CLIENTRaleigh Paper

    CategoryPaper industry

SynopsisThe client wanted a package to acomodate an informative brochure with paper samples and also a DL flyer for a paper stock called LOOK!

It was requested to include a die cut element. You can notice the die cut at top and bottom of the packaging and also in the cover of the informative brochure.

Another instruction was to utilise a combination of three pantone colours. The colour palette selected for the project gave the packing a classy and distinctive looking.

  • BRIEFSeries of packages for three chocolate flavours

    CLIENTMax Brenner

    CategoryChocolate restaurant

SynopsisResearch was really important during the creative process for this project.

The brand Max Brenner was born from a kids dream to produce amazing chocolate.

Inspired by Maxs dream I created the three packages with abstract illustrations and colours related to each flavour.

DREAM BIG is a vanilla chocolate so the colours are more soft. DREAM ON is a strawberry flavoured chocolate and the packages colours are more vibrant. DAYDREAM is for the dark chocolate lovers and the colours on this package reflect the strength and attraction of the flavour.

  • BRIEFPosters

    CLIENTMarrickville Metro Shopping Centre

    CategoryShopping Centre

SynopsisA series of three posters to communicate the new logo, new slogan and new colour scheme of Metro to different demographics.

The green poster is dedicated to families, transmitting a message that Metro is for parents and kids to enjoy together.

The pink quarter of the logo represents the feminine part of Metro so this poster is for women of all ages.

The third version has blue as the main colour and is focused on the male demographics.

  • BRIEFMagazine ad + Newspaper ad

CLIENTThe Sydney Morning Herald Half Marathon

    CategorySports event

SynopsisUsing various techniques learnt in class all students had to create a magazine ad and a newspaper ad for this real annual event.

It was an exercise to create a correct final art for two different print processes.

One important aspect that I learnt with this project was to manipulate the colours on the image.

The runner on the ad wasnt wearing blue when the photo was taken.

The colour blue was chosen to be more harmonic with the half marathon logo.

  • BRIEFBand tour poster

    CLIENTBen Hardie Trio

    CategoryMusic band

SynopsisBased on shoelaces, the typography is the hero on this poster.

The lines of the letters symbolize originality and freedom.

It was first created for a TAFE assignment and then presented to the official Ben Hardie Trio for their considerations.

The band are interested in using my designs for their next album cover.

  • BRIEFPoster to be folded for mailing

    CLIENTFont Shop

    CategoryTypeface online shop

SynopsisThe challenge was to create a piece of design to advertise a typeface.

This artwork would be sent by mail to professional designers so it had to be folded in a small format.

The second requirement was that one side of the artwork had to be a poster.

The typeface that I chose to showcase was Univers and its nine weights and widths. The repetition of the number nine inspired me to create the U9 flyer/poster.

Not coincidently, when you fold the poster to place it inside an envelope you will notice it has nine faces.

  • BRIEFLogo + Postcards set

    CLIENTCoats For Everyone

    CategoryCoats donation campaign

SynopsisMcGrath offered an opportunity to graphic design students from TAFE Design Centre Enmore to create a comprehensive donations campaign strategy and collaterals.

The target audience was very broad and the teachers let us be very creative with our choices.

I was very pleased with my postcards set creations. A composition that mix humour and sadness, aiming to instigate the reader to act, donate a coat and feel good.

  • BRIEFLogo + poster + competitors t-shirt

CLIENTAbu Dhabi World Professional Jiu Jitsu Championship

    CategoryMartial arts tournaments

SynopsisThe client was a very prestigious annual Brazilian Jiu Jitsu tournament that selects the best athlets from Australasia to compete in the world finals in Abu Dhabi. The inspirations were the different aspects of the jiu jitsu world. The layers, the challenges, that make a good fighter progress from his local gym to a world class championship podium.

  • BRIEFFull page magazine ad

CLIENTTAFE Design Centre Enmore - Graphic Design Diploma

    CategoryPolitical party

SynopsisThis full page ad is part of a branding assigment where we studied famous Asutralian brands. My task was to produce an artwork based in the early years of the political party The Greens.

  • BRIEFSeries of three DL flyers

CLIENTTAFE Design Centre Enmore - Graphic Design Diploma

    CategoryCommunity services

SynopsisOriginal typography was a request for this TAFE assignment. The teacher wanted us to create a series of three DL flyers that had different folding mechanisms. My topic was Dog Attacks and I created a dogs face made of words to be the hero of the campaign. The red flyer is about the facts and unfolds to an A3 poster. The Orange flyer is about the law and unfolds once sideways and once vertically to reveal a long page with the legal penalties. The help flyer is yellow and its a landscape DL.

  • BRIEFMovie Poster

CLIENTTAFE Design Centre Enmore - Graphic Design Diploma

    CategoryCinema

SynopsisAs a last project of our branding discipline I had to create a poster for a movie based on my life.

It became a little bit harder when the teacher explained that the story should be about my achievements as a 50 years old man.

Martial arts and actions movies are two of my passions so they were my inspirations to design a movie poster for a true story about a man that has a chance to become a world champion against all the odds.

  • BRIEF8pp DL flyer

    CLIENTThe Australian Ballet

    CategoryDance company

SynopsisThis flyer was created in class during the second year of my graphic design diploma at TAFE Design Centre Enmore.

The idea was to produce an eight panel DL flyer using only two pantone colours. The solution was to make all images grayscale so I could apply the pantones to the images to make it more interesting.

The result is a simple, effective and dynamic piece of design.

  • Rodrigo SILVAgraphic designer

  • Hi, I'm Rodrigo and I'm a Brazilian-born Australian graphic designer with a bachelor in advertising based in Sydney. I have recently created Rigo Designs to work as a freelancer so if you have any ideas, projects or opportunities you'd like to discuss, please get in touch.

I've spent seven years alongside some great people in the advertising industry at agencies in Porto Alegre, Brazil, working with local and national brands. Since I came to Australia in 2006 I've been lucky enough to get a job at Sylvanvale Foundation where I work as a graphic designer today.

Because my involvement in martial arts and creating artworks for gyms and tournaments, my work has been featured in various publications and medias.

I graduated from the Pontifcia Universidade Catlica do Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS) in 2005 with a Bachelor of Social Communication - Focus: Publicity & Advertising. After redirecting my career towards graphic design I took a new academic challenge and graduated from the TAFE Design Centre Enmore in 2014 with a Graphic Design Diploma. I still hold strong links with the course and my graphic design colleagues who I always keep in mind to work together in future projects.

Away from design, I'm a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioner and competitor. The martial arts training helps me keep fit and also mentally strong in all aspects of my life.

Thank you for taking the time to look through my work. If youd like to know more or are interested in working with me, again, please don't hesitate to contact me.
