On the top floor we wanted to emphasize the beautiful ceiling. We did

this by placing track rails directly onto it. In order to create a sense of

lightness and weightlessness we lowered the tracks 50 mm.

We decided to light the façade

from within so that it did not

appear closed to passing

pedestrians.

We used 230 volt LED Tubes

– not least because of their

great dependability: When an

installation is up to eigh meters

above the floor, you do not

want any problems.

On projects like this, we often speak Kelvin. Few laypersons can make

sense of what 3.000 Kelvin means. But every visitor to the shop

understands intuitively how the perfect colour temperature, coupled

with just the right lighting strategies, creates an amazing space that

makes the Vero Moda products shine like never before.

When global Danish brand Vero Moda decided to

showcase innovative design possibilities in their

shop in Stuttgart, they asked Riis Lighting to go

to Germany and endow the two-story space with

two different lighting concepts.

We developed lighting solutions with numerous

different technologies that made each individual

area of the large shop stand out perfectly, and that

addressed the goals and desires of Vero Moda’s

design team

NEVER PUTYOUR PRODUCTIN A BAD LIGHT

Light is crucially important is making your product

look just right. The wrong kind of light with an

incorrect colour temperature with inevitably re-

sult in a bad colour rendition of your product. Its

depth and quality will appear very different from

what your designers intended, and a beautiful and

sophisticated material can suddenly look cheap

and plain.

This is why we at Riis Lightning agonize over finding

just the right colour temperature and improving

the colour rendering index. The end result may ap-

pear to be magic, but it is really just the result of

hi-tech know-how and state-of-the-art solutions.

Your first impression upon entering the café is the subdued and cosy

ambiance. The desk itself is relatively clearly lit – not only to give the

employees perfect working conditions, but also to highlight it as a

stage and a focal point for the customers’ attention.

You want to feel at home in a café. The challenge

for Joe & the Juice in Aarhus was that different

customers desire a different ambiance. Some

come looking for a relaxing break, others seek a

homely and cosy atmosphere, while yet others are

here to be seen and admired. Therefore the café

was divided into three separate zones with each

their own mood.

Yet the café had to remain an open room with big

facades, so passing pedestrians could witness and

be drawn in by all the happy customers. The answer

was creating the different zones through just the

right lighting solutions – and the end result was

Shoes: This entire two-si-

ded wall of shoes is lit only

by built-in LED sticks. The

effect is making the element

appear like a free standing

piece of furniture. The subtle

lighting also creates a per-

fectly comfortable area to

try-out shoes.

Vintage: Old floor-to-ceiling

brick walls and dark oak furnitu-

re make for a very cosy ambian-

ce reminiscent of an old garage,

and the calm and soft lighting

enhance this mood.

Premium: All styles are clearly

lit and framed by barn doors in

order to avoid light spilling out

on the walls.

This flagship store in Denmark’s most popular

shopping centre may be a spectacular sight from

outside with its granite facade and six meter high

windows. But the real magic await indoor, where

six different brands are presented with each their

own theme.

Lightning is a crucial tool in achieving this great

shopping experience. Our starting point was Jack

& Jones’ lighting policy (developed by Riis Lightning,

naturally). This policy dictates that the focus is on

the products: The aisles are relatively dark in order

to direct the customers’ attention to the goods.

And the lamps and spotlights are always discreet

and almost invisible, letting the experience itself

take centre stage.

Riis Spot II is highly efficient and sports optimal

light intensity. The lamp has an integrated trans-

former and can easily be operated with one hand

– even when it is turned on, as it does not get hot

externally.

The black area of the shop is also lit by our LED lamps. Our LED

selection has grown considerably since this show was built. Never-

theless, two years after completion, the lighting of Vero Moda in

Aarhus is still state-of-the-art.

The Vero Moda store in Aarhus is one of the first we

have delivered entirely with LED lighting. We utilised

our Riis Spot LED with a single barn door, as this is

intended to be a shop that shows the way forward.

We used a 50 Watt LED lamp with a colour rendition

index of 90. This ensured that we did not compromise

on the lighting quality, and that customers would have

the same experience as in any other Vero Moda shop

around the world.

You may have the most exquisite products in the

world, but if they are not presented in the proper

light, they look bland and simple.

Light can also result in numerous unintended

effects of not staged properly. If your customer

is blinded by a strong reflection, or if the carefully

crafted ambiance in the shop is ruined by wrongly

placed lamps, he or she will walk away with a poor

impression.

At Riis Lighting we always design, install and fine-

The central aisle with its large

pictures was a major challenge

for us.

As we did not want the shop

to look like a fast-food joint,

backlighting the posters was

not an option. Instead we de-

cided to illuminate them with

our small Riis Spot 2 MINI LED

lamp. This ensured the mood

we were aiming for.

The lamp’s barn doors make

it much less conspicuous, and

also helps concentrate the

light so that it does not light

up the ceiling.

This Sportmaster flagship store demanded several special solutions

from the Riis Lighting design team. The store concept addresses

young, conscious consumers and modern families who appreciate both

high-class sport products and exclusive yet cosy surroundings.

The Shoe area is a focal point in the concept. With its sliding carts it

gives an industrial feel to the shop and provides flexibility.

This Sportmaster flagship store demanded several

special solutions from the Riis Lighting design team.

The store concept addresses young, conscious

consumers and modern families who appreciate both

high-class sport products and exclusive yet cosy

surroundings.

The Shoe area is a focal point in the concept. With its

sliding carts it gives an industrial feel to the shop and

provides flexibility.

The client desired that the

back of the store has a simu-

lated skylight, so that the area

did not appear too dark and

somber.

We developed an elegant

HEXAGON solution with built-

in light. We complemented

the skylight with a number of

ceiling lamps to ensure that

the crafted ambiance did not

prevent the products from

being in focus.

The client wanted to test the

usage of SMD LED screens

in the store.

Fitting rooms: ONLY wanted hexagonal fitting rooms that comple-

mented the design in the back of the store. We developed a HEXA-

GON LED lamp that bathes the customer in 360 degrees of light and

ensures an optimal experience when trying on the products.

The light design of this shop is executed in joint efforts

between the design team and the client.

The project sets new standards for combining interior

design, functionality and visual merchandising.

Keywords like ‘light’ and ‘bright’ have been consistent

throughout the entire process. The shop is illuminated

with a highly professional knowledge of lights to en-

counter the high demands from the customer.

Serge Mouille’s iconic lamps are as

much works of art as sources of

illumination. They fit in perfectly

amongst these great products and

surroundings.

The lighting along the walls and

other places are calibrated at

a colour temperature of 4000

Kelvin, offering a contrast to

the 3000 Kelvin emanating from

the rail track mounted Verona

spots.

This VILA store on the main pedestrian street in

Copenhagen was the first in a series of stores with

the theme “French Petit”. With its beige walls and

everything else in black, this is a designer’s dream:

Reflections are subdued, just as in a theatre where

everything is also black for the very same reason.

The exclusivity of this store is

highlighted by installations such

as this: The seemingly random

placement of this wonderful

and famous Lee Broom Crystal

bulb.

The fitting areas are designed to

appear larger than they really are.

The built-in spot lights in the ceil-

ing have been carefully placed to

ensure that the products are per-

fectly lit. The customer may also

take some time to enjoy the sight

of the classic Tom Dixon designer

lamp that is placed in each room.

We have since opened a number of stores featuring the same

theme, but with a continual evolution of the solutions.

For example, LED now boasts the same performance as the old,

energy demanding halogen lamps. So today we only use LED

throughout the new stores.

The most exciting and evocative spaces are often

very challenging to light properly.

Here at Berlin’s historic Tempelhoff Airport the

client loved the raw and cool hangar, but did not

want to compromise on the lighting of the many

different brands - this had to be just as soft and

sophisticated as in their shops.
