rimska cisterna - roman cistern
DESCRIPTION
HRVRimska cisterna, tzv. Na žalost, većini se tih nalaza ne može ući u trag.ENGRoman water cistern, so called „Dungeon“ is a building remain at the archaeological site of Colentum. The „Dungeon“ was in use as an above-ground water cistern during Roman period. Rain water was collected in the cistern from the elevated roof of the whole architectural complex. Locals named the cistern „Dungeon“ because it reminded them of a prison cell. Behind the „Dungeon“ there is another water tank but smaller and less preserved. Smaller tank was paved with simple stone mosaic. Nearby there are also ruins of a wall in an apse shape, what leads to an assumption that the water tanks were part of a small - perhaps private - thermal complex.First excavations of this site were conducted by historian and archaeologist Luka Jelić in 1907/08. He also noted down many accidental finds by local people. At that time, he discovered remains of buildings, pillars and architraves, dozen decorative stone fragments, two sculpture fragments and two inscription fragments. There were also finds of coins (from the period of the emperor Nero and others) and fragments of tegulae with workshop stamps. Some of more interesting finds of local people were pavement tiles and a golden angel sculpture. Unfortunately most of those finds can not be traced down.TRANSCRIPT
