dokazaosimpokretnihnalazakojisunalaženinaširempodručju
PazdigradaiŽnjanauposljednjih150godina.Tosenaselje
nalazilosjužnestranecestekojajeizEpetijavodiladopostajeAd
Dianam,ipremanalazimanaseljavanojeod1.stoljeća.Samnatpis
pokazujenekolikozanimljivihjezičnihdetaljazakojesesmatrada
supotvrdavulgarnoglatinitetau1.stoljeću.

ThisworkcontainsananalysisofthediscoveryofaRoman-era
gravestelafromthePazdigradsectioninthecityofSplit.During
theRomanera,thesiteatwhichtheinscriptionwasfound
wascertainlysometypeofsettlementorestatewithitsown
necropolis,ofwhichthereisnophysicalevidencetodaywiththe
exceptionofmovableartefactsdiscoveredoverthewiderareaof
PazdigradandŽnjanoverthepast150years.Thissettlementwas
locatedtothesouthoftheroadleadingfromEpetiumtotheAd
Dianamoutpost,andbasedonfindsitwasinhabitedfromthe
firstcenturyonward.Theinscriptionitselfexhibitsseveralvery
interestinglinguisticdetailswhichmaybedeemedconfirmation
oftheexistenceofVulgarLatininthefirstcentury.

Godine2004.usplitskijeArheološkimuzej(Inv.br.38122)kao
slučajninalazdospjelarimskanadgrobnastelakojajepronađena
nasplitskompredjeluPazdigrad(slika1).1Okolnostipronalaska
stele,kaonitočnomjestonalaska,nisuupotpunostipoznati,ali
seznadajepronađenaprilikomkopanjatemeljazajedanveći
stambeniobjektuPazdigradskojulici.2Uzstelu,uMuzejsuistom
prilikomdopremljenatriulomkastranicasarkofaga.Iakoutom
dijeluSplitadodanasnijeobavljanonikakvosustavnoarheološko
istraživanje,većsuotprijepoznatenekevijestionalazimaiz
rimskogadobanapodručjuPazdigradainjegovebližeokolice.

izgradnjiDioklecijanovepalače.

In2004,theArchaeologicalMuseuminSplit(Inv.no.38122)
received,asachancediscovery,aRomangravestelawhichwas
foundinthePazdigradsectionofthecityofSplit(Fig.1).1The
circumstancessurroundingthediscoveryofthestelaortheexact
discoverysitearenotentirelyknown;whatisknownisthatitwas
foundduringtheexcavationoffoundationsforalargeresidential
buildingonPazdigradskastreet.2Besidesthestela,onthesame
occasiontheMuseumalsoreceivedthreefragmentsofthesidesof
asarcophagus.Althoughnosystematicarchaeologicalresearchhas
beenconductedsofarinthispartofSplit,evenbeforetherewas
someinformationonRoman-eraartefactsfromPazdigradandits
immediateenvirons.However,somethingshouldfirstbesaidabout
theperiodthatprecededtheconstructionofDiocletian’sPalace.
TheRoman-eraroadsthattraversedtheSplitpeninsulawere
certainlybuiltonprehistoriccommunicationroutesusedby
thepeoplewhoresidedherepriortoClassicalAntiquity.Almost
nothingisknownaboutthem,butitiscertainthatthisterritory
hasbeeninhabitedsincetheBronzeAge,towhicharchaeological
findstestify-themostimportantbeingthosefromGripe.3The
geographicfeaturesofthisareainSplitmadeitsuitablefor
settlement;suchasettlementcouldhavebeenorientedtoward
maritimeactivitiesandagricultureinprehistory.Attheendofthe
nineteenthcentury,Bulić,JelićandRutarhadalreadyrecognized
thesectionoftheroaddrawnintheTabulaPeutingeriana.4(Fig.2)
Accordingtothismap,aroadledfromEpetiumtoSalona(Epetio-
Salona),whileanotherledtotheAdDianamlocale,whichwason
thesouth-westernsideofMarjanHill.BetweenEpetiumandAd
DianamthereisaplaceonthemapdesignatedasSpalato,and
fromheretheroadbranchesoffandjoinstheEpetium-Salona
road.TheEpetium-Salonaroadwascoveredindetailelsewhere.5
PriortothearrivaloftheRomans,thereprobablywasa
settlementontheSplitpeninsulaestablishedbyGreeksfromIssa
(Vis)orPharos(Hvar)inthefourthorthirdcenturyBCthatwas
calledAspalathos.6Thissettlementwasprobablylocatedatthesite
ofthecontemporarycitysectionscalledManušandŠpalacijuni.
ThenameŠpalacijuniorSpalacijunihasthesameoriginasthe
nameSplit;itisaremnantoftheoriginalnameofthesettlement
inthisareacalledAspalathos.TheGreekpresenceontheSplit
peninsulaleftbehindnonotabletraces.TwoGreekinscriptions
publishedbyBrunšmidmayhavebeenbroughttoSplitfrom
SolinortheislandofVis,7whilethetombinscriptionfromManuš

Antičkecestekojesuvodilesplitskimpoluotokomzacijelo
sunastalenaprapovijesnimkomunikacijamakojimasuseslužili
predantičkižitelji.Onjimaseneznagotovoništa,aliseznadaje
ovajprostorbionaseljenjošodbrončanogdoba,očemusvjedoče
nalazimeđukojimajenajznačajnijionajsGripa.3Zemljopisne
osobinesplitskogpodručjabilesupovoljnezarazvitaknaselja,koje
jeuprapovijesnomrazdobljumoglobitiorijentiranonapomorske
aktivnostiipoljodjelstvo.JošsuBulić,JelićiRutarkrajem19.
stoljećaprepoznalidionicecesteucrtanenaPeutingerovuitineraru
(slika2).4PrematojkartiizEpetijajejednacestavodilauSalonu
(Epetio-Salona),adrugadolokalitetaAdDianam,kojisenalaziona
jugozapadnojstraniMarjana.IzmeđuEpetijaiAd Dianamnalazise
mjestokojejenakartiucrtanokaoSpalato,aotudasecestaodvaja
ipriključujenacestuEpetij-Salona.OcestiEpetij-Salonapodrobno
jepisanonadrugomemjestu.5
PrijedolaskaRimljananasplitskomjepoluotokuvjerojatno
bilonaseljekojesuosnovalimoždaisejskiilifarskiGrciu4.iliu3.
stoljećupr.Kr.izvaloseAspalathos.6Tosenaseljenajvjerojatnije
nalazilonapodručjudanašnjihpredjelaManušaiŠpalacijuna.
NazivŠpalacijuniiliSpalacijuniistogjepostankakaoiimeSplit
ireliktjeizvornognazivanaseljanatompodručjukojesezvalo
Aspalathos.Grčkaprisutnostnasplitskompoluotokunijeostavila
značajnijegtraga.DvagrčkanatpisakojadonosiBrunšmid,uSplit

wasfoundaspartofanecropolisthatwasconfirmedbyurns
fromincinerationgraves.8Thenecropolishasbeendatedtothe
periodfromthefirstcenturyBCtothesecondcenturyAD,while
theinscriptionitselfdatestothesecondcentury.Itisinteresting
thatthisinscriptionwasnotcarvedaccordingtotheRoman
formofgraveinscriptionsofthetime,andJelićbelievesthatthis
inscription,aspartofthenecropolis,stoodnexttotheroad.9Two
Hellenisticconstructionswerefoundinthesubstructureofthe
crypto-porticoatDiocletian’sPalacewhichwereinitiallybelieved
tobethestair-likesuperstructureofHellenistictombs,butare
todayinterpretedaswellsoraltarbases.10Therefore,theexistence
ofGreekethniccommunityintheterritoryoftheSplitpeninsula
canbeascertainedassuch,butwecannotbeentirelycertainasto
whethertheGreekshadasettlementatManuš.
AftertheRomanconquestandtheorganizationofthe
Illyricumprovince,thesituationinthisregionbegantochange.
Theformerterritoryofthepre-Romancommunitiesbecame
state-ownedlandaspartoftheSalonaager,andonlyAspalathos
neverhadmunicipaladministration.11Thislandwasallocated
toItalicsettlersandveteranswhotradedintheiryearsof
combattoenjoytheidyllsofsuburbanlife.RemainsofRoman
parcelizationthatwerestillvisibleintheearlytwentiethcentury
andarchitecturalremainsconfirmthattheareabetweenSplit

natpissManušapronađenusastavunekropolekojajepotvrđena
urnamaspaljevinskimukopima.8Nekropolasedatiraod1.st.pr.Kr.
do2.st.posl.Kr.,doksesamnatpisdatirau2.stoljeće.Zanimljivo
jeitodatajnatpisnijeklesanpremarimskojforminadgrobnih
natpisatogdoba,aJelićsmatradajekaodionekropolestajaouz
cestu.9UsupstrukcijikriptoportikaDioklecijanovepalačesredinom
prošlogstoljećapronađenesudvijehelenističkekonstrukcijeza
kojeseispočetkamislilodasustepenastenadgradnjehelenističkih
grobova,tzv.epitymbia,adanassetumačekaobunariilibaza
oltara.10Stoga,možemosamoustanovitipostojanjegrčkogetnika
napodručjusplitskogpoluotoka,alinemožemobitiposvesigurni
dasuGrciimalinaseljeupravonaManušu.
SrimskimosvajanjemiorganizacijomprovincijeIlirik,situacija
naovompodručjupočelasemijenjati.Nekadašnjiteritorij
predrimskihzajednicakojesunastavaleovajprostor,postaoje
državnozemljišteusklopusalonitanskogagera,asamonaselje
Aspalathosnijenikadaimalomunicipalnusamoupravu.11Tase
zemljadodjeljivalaitalskimdoseljenicimaiveteranimakojisu
godineratovanjazamijeniliuživanjemuidiliprigradskogživota.
DaseprostorizmeđuSplitaiSolina,poznatijikaosplitskopolje,
obrađivaouanticiidasuseunutarnjeganalazilagospodarska
imanja,potvrđujuostacirimskeparcelizacijekojajebilavidljiva
jošpočetkom20.st.,kaoiostaciarhitekture.Osimtoga,postoji
nekolikosplitskihpredjelakojisudobiliimepoimenimavlasnika
izrimskihvremena;radiseotzv.predijalnimtoponimima,no
onjimaćeposlijebitigovora.Čitavjesalonitanskiagerbio
podijeljennapravilnekvadrate(centuriae)površine200jugera
(720x720m).12Mrežacenturijauagerustrogojeortogonalna,s
ravnimpravcimauobasmjera(unačelucardo maximussjever-jug,
decumanus maximusistok-zapad).13Agerseprotezaonegdjeod
današnjegKaštelStaroga,gdjejegraničiosteritorijemTragurija,
pasvedorijekeŽrnovnice,zahvativšitakodanašnjekaštelansko,
solinskoisplitskopolje.Neštomanjeodpolovinetogpodručja
bilojeorganiziranoucenturije(čitavosplitskoisolinskopolje,a
ukaštelanskomdoKaštelKambelovca)(slika3).14Splitskoplodno
poljebilojeosnovazagospodarskeaktivnostižiteljaSalone,
kojajekaokolonijabrojalaoko60.000stanovnika.Osimveć
spomenutihveteranaiItalika,posjedesumogliimatitrgovciili
gradskivijećnicikaoštojebioLucijeGranijeProklin(L. Granius
Proclinus),dekurioniflaminuEkvuibeneficijarijXIV.legijekojije
pokopannasalonitanskomageru,udanašnjemsplitskompredjelu
Blatine-Smrdečac.15ArakojaspominjeLucijaGranijaProklinabilaje,

andSolin,betterknownasSplitsko polje,ortheSplitField,was
undercultivationeventhen,andthattherewerefarmestateson
it.Besidesthis,thereareseveralsectionsofSplitnamedafterthe
ownersfromtheRomanera,so-calledsectionaltoponyms,but
thesewillbediscussedlater.TheentireSalonaagerwasdivided
intoregularsquares(centuriae)withsurfaceareaof200iugeri
(720x720m).12Thenetworkofcenturiaeintheagerwasrigidly
orthogonal,withstraightroutesinbothdirections(inprinciple:
cardo maximusnorth-south,decumanus maximuseast-west).13The
agerextendedfromaroundthesiteoftoday’sKaštelStari,where
itborderedwiththeterritoryofTragurium,uptotheŽrnovnica
River,encompassingtoday’sKaštel,SolinandSplitfields.Alittle
lessthanhalfofthisterritorywasdividedintocenturiae(allof
SplitandSolinfield,andinKaštelfielduptoKaštelKambelovac)
(Fig.3).14ThefertileSplitFieldwasthebasisofeconomicactivityof
theresidentsofSalona,whichwasacolonywithapopulationof
60,000.BesidesthealreadymentionedveteransandItalicsettlers,
estatescouldalsobeheldbymerchantsorcitycouncilmembers
suchasLuciusGraniusProclinus,adecurionandaflamenin
Aequum,andabeneficiaryofLegioXIV,whowasburiedinthe
Salonaager,intoday’sSplitsectioncalledBlatine-Smrdečac.15The
altarwhichmentionsLuciusGraniusProclinuswas,accordingto
NenadCambi,thecentraltombstoneinasmallercemeteryfound
inthispartoftheager.16Thelocationofthisgraveandtheentire
necropoliswasintheextremenorth-westerncornerofthetract,
whichcanbedetermineonthebasisofdataonfieldpathsthat
maintaintheroutesoftheformernetworkofroadsbetweenthe
plotsoftheager’sboundarysystem.17Priortothisfind,atorcular
andfragmentsofRomanbrickswithsealswerefoundinBlatine,
whichcouldindicatetheexistenceofworkfacilities.18Someofthe
majorurbanthoroughfaresinSplitemergedpreciselyalongthe
routesoftheRomancenturiationthatdividedestates(e.g.today’s
VukovarskastreetandPoljičkaroadintheeast-westdirection,
Zrinsko-Frankopanskainthenorth-southdirection).Sincethe
originalappearanceofcenturiationontheSplitpeninsulacanbe
shownwithgreatprecision,onecanseethatsomeofthefinds
werenotlocatedinthedirectionofcenturiationorrightnextto
it,butratheroutsideofit.Thisdemonstratesthatthecenturiae
wereseparatedbyroutesamongthemselves(limites intercisivior
subcessivi)thatdividedthecenturiaeintofourequalparts.19
IntheRomanera,aneast-westroadpassedabovethe
PazdigradsectionthatrunsfromStobrečtoSplit,totheoutpost
(mansio)Ad Dianam,whichacquireditsnamefromtheTempleof
DianaontheCapeofMarjanlocatedwestofit.Pazdigradisonthe

nekropolanalazilisusenakrajnjemsjeverozapadnomugluparcele,
štosemožeodreditinaosnovipodatakapoljskihputovakojidrže
pravacnegdašnjemrežecestameđuparcelamasustavalimitacije
agera.17PrijetognalazanaBlatinamasunađenitorkularifragmenti
rimskihopekaspečatima,štobimogloukazivatinapostojanje
gospodarstvenogobjekta.18Nekeodvažnijihgradskihprometnica
uSplitunastalesuupravonasmjerupružanjarimskecenturijacije
kojajeodvajalaposjede(npr.današnjaVukovarskaulicaiPoljička
cestausmjeruistok-zapad,Zrinsko-Frankopanskausmjeru
sjever-jug).Kakosesvelikompreciznošćumožeprikazatiizvorni
izgledcenturijacijenasplitskompoluotoku(slika3),takosemože
vidjetiidasenekaodnalazištanenalazenapravcuiliodmahuz
pravaccenturijacije,negoizvannjega.Topokazujedasucenturije
unutarsebetakođerbilepodijeljenepravcima(limites intercisiviili
subcessivi),kojisucenturijudijelilinačetirijednakadijela.19
IznadpredjelaPazdigraduanticijeusmjeruistok-zapad
prolazilacestaodStobrečadoSplita,odnosnodopostaje(mansio)
Ad Dianam,kojajeimedobilapremaDijaninuhramunartuMarjana
smještenomzapadnijeodtepostaje.Pazdigradsenalaziuprvoj
polovinirute,odnosnobližijeEpetijunegolokalitetuAd Dianam.

firsthalfoftheroute,closertoEpetiumthanAd Dianam.Tothe
north,Pazdigradisborderedbyamodernroadthatemergedon
theRoman-eraroad.Thissectionisthecity’ssouth-easternend,
eastoftheChurchofSt.Lawrence.Thischurchwasconstructed
intheninthortenthcentury,anditwasfirstmentionedin1250
asS.Laurentius Paganus.20Jelić,BulićandSkokassociatedthe
termpaganuswiththesurvivalofapaganpopulationinLate
Antiquity,whichhaditsownenclaveinthePazdigradarea.21
However,asimpleconsiderationofthegeographiclocationof
Pazdigrad,whichisonlyafewkilometresfromthePalace,makes
thisunlikely.Namely,oncetheChristianerabegan,itisdifficultto
believethatanentirepagancommunitycouldcontinuetoexist
alongamainroadandlaterhaveanentireareanamedafterit.22
Thetoponympaganusisderivedfrompagus,meaningthatthe
ChurchofSt.Lawrencewaslocatedinaruraltract(pagus),and
notinasettlement.23Additionally,theareaofPazdigrad,Blatine
andVisokawere,accordingtoCambiandRapanić,pagitoSalona,
(A)SpalatoandEpetium,andthustheyremainedevenlater.24
Overthepast150years,Roman-eraartefactswerediscovered
allalongtheRoman-eraroadthatpassedthroughsomeoftoday’s
sectionsofSplit.Thetombaltarandtheremainsofthework
buildinginBlatinehavealreadybeenmentioned,itwouldalsobe

napodručjuPazdigrada.21Većnasamupomisaoogeografskom
smještajuPazdigrada,kojijesamonekolikokilometaraodPalače,
tosečininemogućim.Naime,udobakršćanstvabilojenezamislivo
dauzglavnecestemožepreostatinaseljepoganskezajednicepo
kojembiseposlijenazvaočitavprostor.22Toponimpaganusizveden
jeodpagus,odnosnocrkvasv.Lovrenalazilaseupolju(pagus),a
neunaselju.23Osimtoga,područjaPazdigrada,BlatinaiVisokeu
anticisuuodnosunaSalonu,(A)SpalatoiEpetij,kakomisleCambi

gospodarskogobjektanaBlatinama,abilobidobrospomenutii
nekavažnijanalazištasasličnimobilježjimaublizinicestakojesu
išlesplitskimpoluotokom.
U19.stoljećujenaobližnjemŽnjanu,kodGospinecrkve,
otkrivenoantičkogrobljesgrobnicamaodulomakaamforai
hidrijadatiranou2.i3.st.25Jošiprijeotkrićagrobljabiojepoznat
pronalazaknadgrobnognatpisaSekstaAtilijaKvartina(Sex. Atilius
Quartinus)isuprugemuJulijeSekunde(Iulia Secunda)iz2.st.26
SamoimeŽnjanmožeseobjasnitipostankomodIunianum (sc.
praedium),jerjenatommjestuuanticibioposjednekogJunija.27
UDragovodama,gdjejebiloraskrižjerimskecesteSalona-Spalato-
Epetio,nađenajerimskacisterna,dvanatpisa,odkojihjejedan
iz1.st.,28adrugiiz3.st.,potomnovaciz1.-3.st.,kipKibele,reljef
sprikazomDijaneijošmnogositnihnalaza.29Daljenazapad,
naVisokoj,izmeđuDragovodaiGripa,nađenisurimskigrobovi,
jedannadgrobninatpis30ižrtvenikposvećenSilvanuigenijugrada
Epetijaiz1.st.31LukaJelićističetajnatpiskaoiznimnoznačajan,
smatrajućikakoseiznjegačitadajeovopodručjeu1.stoljećubilo
dioepetijskogagera.32PonjegovujemišljenjuiprostorokoŽnjanai

OurLady,aRoman-eracemeterywithgravescontainingamphora
andhydriafragmentsdatedtothesecondandthirdcenturies.25
Evenbeforethiscemeterywasfound,thetombinscriptionof
SextusAtiliusQuartinusandhiswifeIuliaSecundafromthe
secondcenturywereknown.26TheverynameŽnjancanbe
explainedasderivingfromIunianum (sc.praedium),i.e.theestate
ofsomeonenamedJuniuswaslocatedatthissiteintheRoman
era.27 InDragovode,wheretheRoman-eraSalona-Spalato-Epetio
roadsintersected,acistern,twoinscriptions,ofwhichoneisfrom
thefirst,28andtheotherfromthethirdcentury,astatueofCybelle,
areliefportrayingDianaandmanyotherartefacts29werefound.
Furthertothewest,atVisokabetweenDragovodeandGripe,
Romangraves,atombinscription30andaltardedicatedtoSilvanus
andthegensofEpetiumfromthefirstcentury31werefound.
LukaJelićstressesthisinscriptionasveryimportant,believing
thatitindicatesthatthisareawasapartoftheEpetiumagerin
thefirstcentury.32AccordingtoJelić,theareaaroundŽnjanand
PazdigradalsobelongedtotheEpetiumratherthanSalonaager.
Hefurthermorestatedthatthesettlement(pagus)fromŠpalacjuni
toManušmayhavebelongedtoEpetium,becausehebelieved
thataGreekpopulationlivedinthisarea,andthatthispagus
wasclosetotheaforementionedsettlementsatDragovode-
Visoka,andŽnjan-Pazdigrad.33Thisviewis,however,untenable
becauseduringtheRomaneraEpetiumcameundertheSalona
agerandhadnomunicipalautonomy,ratheritwasprobablyan
agerprefectureofSalona,34whiletheaforementionedaltarmay
havebeenbroughtfromsomewhereelse.AtSućidarinthepast
centurytheremainsoftwoLateAntiquitynecropoliseswere
foundthatwerealsolocatedalongtheroadthatledtoEpetium.35
TheroadwentontoGripe,wheretheremainsofburialurngraves,
amarblesarcophagusandremainsofRoman-eraarchitecture
destroyedduringconstructionworks36werefound.SouthofGripe,
theroadwentalongthecoastnexttothePojišansection,which
wasnamedafteracertainPansa.37Hehadhisestatehereduring

odnekuddonesen.NaSućidrusuuprošlomstoljećunađeniostaci
dvijukasnoantičkihnekropolakojesutakođerbileuzcestuštoje
vodilapremaEpetiju.35CestavodidaljedoGripa,gdjesuotkriveni
ostacigrobovauurnama,mramornisarkofagiostaciantičke
arhitekturekojisuuništeniprilikomgrađevinskihradova.36Južnood
Gripa,nacestikojajeišlauzobalu,upredjeluPojišan-kojijeime
dobiopremanekomPansi(Pansa),37kojijeurimskodobaondje
imaosvojposjed38-pronađenisuprikraju19.st.rimskigrobovisa
svjetiljčicamaibalzamarijimaižrtvenikposvećennimfama.39
Unajnovijevrijemeprovedenasuarheološkaistraživanja
nalokalitetuAd basilicas pictasnaManušu,kojasudonijela
zanimljiverezultate.Naime,bazilikalnikompleksizrazdoblja5.-6.
stoljećanastaojenatemeljimastarijeantičkegrađevine(teatraili
odeona?)datiraneTrajanovimnovcemu1.-2.stoljeće.40
ZapadnoodPalačepoznatojenekolikonalazakojisedatiraju
urazdoblje1.-3.stoljeća.Spomeniciuglavnomnadgrobnog
karakteranaŠperunu,uVarošuinaDobromesukaospoliji
ugrađeniustambeneobjekte.41Pretpostavljasedajenapodručju
Dobrogbiloantičkonaselje(vicus)snekropolomkojaseprostirala
naširempodručju.42ULori,nasjeverozapadusplitskogpoluotoka,
priječetrdesetakgodinaotkrivenajenekropolačijinalazi
pokazujukontinuitetukapanjaoddrugepolovine1.doranog3.
stoljeća.43SličnokaoinaDobrome,brojukopaiširinapovršine
kojujezauzimalanekropolaukazivalibinatodajetobilogroblje
nekogposjedailimanjeaglomeracije.44Utimistraživanjimanisu
pronađenininatpisinitragoviarhitekture,aliublizininekropole
većjeodavnobiopronađennatpisuzidanujužnizidsamostanske
crkvesv.Marije.45Natpis,kojijezasigurnoizvornobiougrađenu
nekizid,spominjegrobnuparceluunutarkojesenalazilakućaza
jelo(taberna).Unjojsuseodržavaliobrediupokojnikovučastna
spomen-dane.46

interestingresults.Thebasilicacomplexfromthefifth/sixth
centurywaserectedonthefoundationsoftheolderbuildingfrom
Antiquity(atheatreorodeon)datedtothefirst/secondcentury
basedonTrajan’scoins.40
SeveralfindsareknowntothewestofthePalacethatdate
backtothefirsttothirdcenturies.Monumentsofagenerally
tombstonecharacterwereincorporatedintohousingbuildings
asspoliaatŠperun,VarošandDobri.41Itisassumedthatthere
wasaRoman-erasettlement(vicus)intheDobriareawitha
necropolisthatextendedovertheentiretract.42AtLora,on
thenorth-westernSplitpeninsula,anecropoliswasdiscovered
aboutfortyyearsago,andtheartefactsfoundthereindicate
thecontinuityofintermenttherefromthesecondhalfofthe
firstcenturytotheearlythirdcentury.43SimilartoDobro,the
numberofburialsandtheextentofthesurfaceoccupiedbythe
necropolisindicatedthatthiswasthecemeteryofanestateora
smalleragglomeration.44Atthattime,noinscriptionsneartraces
ofarchitecturewerefound,althoughnearthisnecropolisan
inscriptionbuiltintothesouthernwallofthemonasticChurchof
St.Marywasknowntoexistevenearlier.45Theinscription,which
wascertainlyoriginallybuiltintoawall,mentionsagravetract
withinwhichtherewasahutforservingfood(taberna).Ritualsto
honourthememorialdaysofthedeceasedwereheldhere.46
ItwouldbeinterestingtomentionthattheSplitpeninsula
isanarearichinsourcesofwater.Eventoday,somepartsofthe
cityhavenamesthattestifytoSplit’sabundanceofwater,so
today’ssectionDobricomesfromthetermdobar izvor(good
spring),dobra voda (goodwater),Ital.Pozzobon,whilethe
toponymRadunicaisderivedfromtheOldSlavonicwordradun,
whichindicatesasourceofwater.47Eventodaythereisaspring
inRadunicafromwhichpotablewaterconstantlyflows.Thereis
infactahouseinRadunicawithawalled-inreliefportrayinga
nymphandaninscriptionmentioningthededicantEuaristus,48

UpravojeujednojkućiuRaduniciuzidanreljefsprikazomnimfi
inatpisomkojispominjededikantaEuarista(Euaristus),48dokse
naDobrome,međuvećspomenutimspolijima,nalaziireljefs
nimfomkojanaglavinosikantar.49Nastarijimkartamasplitskog
poljaucrtanisubunariipotociodkojihsunekiidanaspostojeći,
pasetakokrozpredjeleTrstenikiPazdigraddvapotokaulijevaju
umore.50OvdjesejošmožespomenutiitoponimSmrdečac,koji
seusrednjemvijekunazivaoad aquas fetidasiad puteum fetidum,
aoznačavaobimjestonakojemsenalazioizvorilibunarsmrdljive,
moždasumpornevode.51SmrdečacsenalazinapredjeluBlatine,
kojisetoponimtakođermoževezatiuzprisutnostvode.Sumpornih
vrelabilojeinamjestugdjejeposlijeizgrađenaDioklecijanova
palačainajvjerojatnijesuseonakoristilauliječenju.52

vis.111cm,šir.51cm,deb.12.5cm.Nagornjemjedijeluotučena
privrhuzabata,alomseširineravnouobasmjeradovrhova
palmeta.Nadalje,manjaseoštećenjanalazemjestimičnopo
cijelojpovršiniprofilacijeirubastele,doksevećaoštećenjanalaze
nadnustele,gdjenedostajeusadnik,tenajednomemjestu
desnogruba.Najvjerojatnijejedotogoštećenjadošloprilikom
strojnogiskopa.Spomeniksekompozicijskimožepodijelitiutri
dijela.Prvi,gornjidiočinidvostrukoprofiliranuklesanizabats
rozetomodčetirisrcolikelaticeusredini,atrokutastapoljaiznad
njegaukrašenasuakroterijimauoblikutrokutnogpostamentana
kojimastoječetverolisnepalmete.Svakaodlaticaimaužlijebljenu
linijukojaihdijelinadvadijela.Drugidiočininatpisnopolje
profiliranonaistinačinkaoizabat,atreći,donji,diopredstavlja
reljefniprikazdvijuptica,vjerojatnogolubica.Pticesupostavljene
jednanasuprotdrugoj,aukljunovimadržegirlandukojaseu
lukuprotežeodjednogdodrugogkljuna.Girlandajenajužana
krajevimakojizavršavajupetljom,anajdebljaprisredini,odnosno
nadnuluka.Odprikazapticadodnasačuvanogdijelaprazanje

toponymSmrdećac,whichwascalledad aquas fetidasandad
puteum fetidumintheMiddleAges,anditdesignatedasiteat
whichspringorwelloffoul-smelling(inCroatian:smrad-stench),
perhapssulphurous,waterwaslocated.51Smrdećacisapartofthe
Blatinesection,whichcanalsobeassociatedwiththepresence
ofwater(blatomeansmudinCroatian,althoughearliertheword
wasalsousedtorefertoapondorlake).Therewereprobably
alsosulphurousspringsatthesitewhereDiocletian’sPalacewas
laterconstructed,andtheywereprobablyusedformedicinal
purposes.52
Description of the stela
Thestelaismadeoflimestoneandrectangularinshape,with
thefollowingdimensions:height:111cm,length:51cm,width:
12.5cm.Ontheupperportionthereisindentationdamagenear
thetopofthepediment,andthefissureextendsunevenlyin
bothdirectionstothetipsofthepalmettes.Moreover,minor
damagecanbefoundatplacesalongtheentiresurfaceofthe
mouldingandstelaedge,whilethereisgreaterdamageatthe
bottomofthestela,wherethebaseismissing,andatonepoint
ontherightedge.Thedamagewasmostlikelyincurredduring
excavationbyheavymachinery.Themonumentcanbedivided
intothreepartsintermsofcomposition.Thefirst,upperportion
consistsofadouble-mouldedcarvedpedimentwitharosette
consistingoffourheart-shapedpetalsinthemiddle,whilethe
triangularfieldaboveitisdecoratedwithacroteriashapedlikea
triangularpedestalonwhichfour-leafpalmettesrest.Eachofthe
petalscontainsagroovedlinethatdividesthemintotwoparts.
Thesecondportionconsistsoftheinscriptionfieldmouldedin
thesamemannerasthepediment,whilethethird,lowerportion
constitutesareliefportrayaloftwobirds,probablydoves.The
birdsareplacedfacingeachother,holdingagarlandintheir
beakswhichformsanarcfromonebeaktotheother.Thegarland
isnarrowestatitstips,whereitendsinknots,andthickestinthe
middle,atthebottomofthearc.Fromthebirdstothebottomof
thepreservedsectionitisempty,withnomouldingorportrayals.
Theinscriptionisengravedineightlinesintheinscriptionfield
withdimensionsof38.3x57cm,whilethesizeofthelettersvaries
from5.5cminthefirstlineto2.1cminthepenultimateline.The

whichisessentiallyaparticipleoftheverbamplio1,‘Ienhance,
Iincrease’(ampliatus,literally:enhanced,abundant;broad)
couldbeaLatintranslationofsomeindigenousnamethat
cannotbereconstructed.ThesameappliestothelittlegirlJulia
Mollatina,whosecognomencanperhapsbeassociatedwiththe

timeshehadprobablydiedpreviously.
ThegentilitianIuliusindicatesRomancitizenshipacquired
inthefirsthalfofthefirstcenturyduringthereignoftheJulian
dynasty.DespitethefactthatGaiusJuliusAmpliatuswasaRoman
citizen,thetribusinwhichhewasregisteredisnotcitedinthe
inscription,whichwasoftenthecaseforrecentcitizensand
foreigners.53
ThecognomenAmpliatuswasknownthroughoutthe
Empireinallperiods,anditischaracteristicofmanyslavesand
freedmen.54IntheSalonaareatherearefourknowninscriptionsin

ischaracteristicoffirst-centuryinscriptions.Finally,thetypeof
lettersintheinscriptionarecharacteristicofthissameperiod.

Thelowerportionofthestela,asalreadymentioned,is
decoratedwithashallowreliefportrayingbirdsholdingagarland
(Fig.4).Asimilarportrayaloftwobirdsholdingagarlandintheir
beakscanbefoundonthestelaofLuciusMammiusMaximusand
LuciusMammiusSeverusfromBegunjatGorenjskoinSlovenia62
(Fig.5).Thissteladatestotheendofthefirstorbeginningofthe
secondcentury.63Theentirelowerportionofthestelahasno
mouldingonthesides,andthereisagreatdealofemptyspace
onthestonebelowtheportrayalofthedoves.Stelaeonwhicha
largepartofthelowerhalfisundecoratedweregenerallyfound
throughouttheEmpireduringthefirstcentury.Threemonuments
fromPoetoviocanserveforthesakeofcomparison:thestela
ofGaiusServilius64,asoldierofLegioXIII Augusta,whichshows
similaritieswiththestelafromSplitinitsupperportion;thestela
ofGaiusCorneliusProculus65,asoldierofLegio XIIIGemina;the
stelaoffreedmanVicariusandfreedwomanMusculeia Sura66;and
thestelaofthefreedmanPubliusCatius67fromGaližana.
Atfirstglancetheinscriptionislegible,butitcontainsseveral
interestinglinguisticdetailsthatmeritalittleattention.There
aremanyinscriptionsthatposesimilarproblems,exhibiting
irregularitiesinrelationtoClassicalLatinity,andtoolittleattention
wasdedicatedtopreciselysuchtriviallinguisticdeviationsduring
publication,rathertheywereexplainedawayas“carvingerrors”or
theyweresimplyignored.
Hereitisamatterofawordintheinscriptionengravedin
itsabbreviatedformasANNVCL.Thisisanadjectivewhichin
itsstandardformisanniculus,one-year.Bothanniculusand
annuculushavebeenconfirmedinRomanliterature,whileonly
theformannuc(l)ushasbeenconfirmedininscriptionsfrom
Dalmatia.However,thequestionarisesastowhichformwas
moresuitableasfarasthelanguageitselfisconcerned:anniculus
orannuculus?Thisauthorbelievesthereisnoanswertothis
question,becauseinbothcasesthiswordwaspronouncedwith
somekindofsoundbetweenuandi.Asanexampleofthissound,
IherecitetheGreekletterupsilon(υ)andtheGermanumlaut-u
(ü).ThereisconfirmationofthispronunciationinQuintilianus,
whosaidthatinsuchwordsasoundbetweenuandicanbe
heard.68InmanyplacesinearlierLatininscriptionstheolderform

timsitnimjezičnimodstupanjima;onisekatkadobjašnjavajutek
”klesarskompogreškom”iliimseuopćenepoklanjapozornost.

kaoANNVCL.Tojepridjevkojiusvomstandardnomoblikuglasi
anniculus,jednogodišnji.Urimskojsuknjiževnostipotvrđenii
anniculusiannuculus,dokjenanatpisimaizDalmacijepotvrđen
samooblikannuc(l)us.Postavljasepitanjekojibibioprikladnijioblik,
upogledusamogjezika,anniculusiliannuculus?Smatramodana
tonemaodgovorajersetariječuobaslučajaizgovaralasnekakvim
glasomizmeđuuii.Primjeraradi,navestćemozatakavglasgrčki
ipsilon(υ)injemačkousprijeglasom(ü).Zatakavizgovorpostoji
potvrdakodKvintilijana,kojikažedaseutakvimriječimačujeglas
kojijeizmeđuuii.68Naranijimlatinskimnatpisimanamnogimje
mjestimapotvrđenstarijioblikriječi,ukojojudolaziumjestoi,npr.

nisunisamibilisigurnikakobitrebaloizgovaratiipisatitakve
riječi,pajevećibrojprimjeratakvih”neodlučnosti”naarhajskim
natpisima.Nastavak-umususuperlativubiojesasvimnormalna
pojavanalatinskimnatpisimarepublikanskogdoba,dokjena
kasnijimnatpisimatajnastavakvraćeniztežnjezaarhaiziranjem.70U
rimskojseknjiževnostitomoževidjetikodPlauta,EnijailiTerencija,
kadajetojošbilodiosvakodnevnoggovora,aliikodSalustija.
No,uSalustijevodoba(drugačetvrtina1.st.pr.Kr.)latinskijejezik
većbiopročišćeniusuglašenojedaseriječidvojbenogizgovora
pišusai.StogaSalustijevopisanjeriječikojeimajuuumjestoi,nije
posljedicanjegoveneodlučnostikakobinekuriječnapisao,nego
jerezultatnjegovenakanedaseizraziarhaičnimstilom,jezikom

Thesuffix-umusinthesuperlativewasanentirelynormalfeature
inLatininscriptionsoftheRepublicera,whileinlaterinscriptions
thissuffixwasreturnedduetothedesiretorenderarchaicforms.70
InRomanliterature,thiscanbeseeninthewritingsofPlautus,
EnniusorTerence,whenitwasstillapartofeverydayspeech,and
inthewritingsofSalustius.However,inSalustius’time(second
quarterofthefirstcenturyAD),Latinhadalreadybeenpurified
andharmonized,sothatwordswithdubiouspronunciationswere
writtenwithani.Thus,thewritingsofSalustiuscontainingwords
withuinsteadofiarenottheresultofhisuncertaintyastohowto
writeaword,butratheranexpressionofhisarchaicstyle,which
hadotherwisebeenabandonedbythattime.71SincetheRomans
hadnosymbolforLatinwordsforthesoundthatwasidentical
totheGreekletterυ(exceptyforLatinizedGreekwords),they
werethemselvesuncertainastohowtowritesuchwords.Thisis
preciselywhyinallerasofLatinliteracywecanfindinscriptions
containingbothvariantsofthesameword.Fromtheeraof
Claudius,whoatthetimeattemptedtointroduceseveralnew
letterstotheLatinalphabet(theso-calledlitterae Claudianae),
thereistheinscriptionofasoldierfromtheseventhlegionfrom
Tilurium,whosetombepitaphcontainedwordswiththeletter
yratherthani (lachrymans).72Itispossiblethatsuchwritingwas
theresultoftheClaudianreforms,eventhoughywasnotamong
thelettersintroducedunderthisreform(therewasaseparate
letterforthis).ThroughouttheImperialperiod,therewereother
examplesofwordswiththeletteryattheplacewhereioru would
otherwisebe(e.g.lachrymis,contybernali,lybens,gybernator).73
InDalmatia,thereareinscriptionsinwhichthesame
substitutionofiwithuappears:thenamesSeptumia Ravonia
Maxuma,74Septumius Secundus,75theadjectivesoptumae,76
infelicissuma,77ultuma,78etc.
Thisisnottheonlyinterestingaspectofthisword;besides
thestylisticdistinction,thewordalsohasacharacteristiclocal
pronunciation.Itis,namely,writtenwithasyncope,i.e.inthe

poznatojejošprimjerasynamjestugdjebitrebalistajaliiiliu (npr.

UDalmacijisupoznatinatpisigdjesejavljaistazamjenaisau:
imenaSeptumia Ravonia Maxuma,74Septumius Secundus,75pridjevi
optumae,76infelicissuma,77ultuma,78itd.
Tonijejedinazanimljivostoveriječi;osimštoimastilsku
osobitost,riječimaiznačajkulokalnogizgovora.Naime,napisana
jesasinkopom,odnosnouriječinedostajevokaluizmeđuCiL,
takodasečitalaannuclo,aneannuculo.Tomeuprilogidunatpisi
pronađeninasalonitanskompodručjunakojimasečitafilio Iulio
annuclo,79pater defuncti annucli,80iannuclae.81Spomenutiprimjeri
istovjetnisuonomesnašegnatpisa,jerimajuriječnapisanu
sinkopomiznakomuumjestoi.Zanimljivojeitodanismo
naišlinaoblikannicl-,dokseoblikannucul-javljadostarijetko.82

Intheseventhlineoftheinscription,themasonleftouta
letterIinthewordFILIS,i.e.,itshouldreadFILIIS.
Finally,thisauthorwouldliketodrawtwoconclusionsfrom
theaforementionedarguments:
1. InthefirstcenturiesoftheEmpire,theSplitpeninsulawas
apartoftheSalonaager,andithadreachedahighlevelof
urbanizationpriortotheconstructionofDiocletian’sPalace.
Thisisshownbythegenerallychancediscoveriesofgrave
artefactsfromseveralsmallernecropolisesandtheremains
ofbuildingsinwhichsomeeconomicactivitywasconducted.
Bothbelongtoagroupoffindsthatcouldnothavebeen
broughtfromsomeothersite,sotheycertainlyindicate
thatpeoplelivedandworkedinthisareaintheRoman(and
probablyGreek)fashionlongbeforeDiocletian.Someof
theepigraphicmonumentsfoundinSplitwereprobably
broughtfromSolinasconstructionmaterials.Thisactually
generatesconsiderableproblems,becausethereisnodoubt
oftheoriginofaninscriptiontodayfoundinSolin,whileit
israrethatonecansayofanyinscriptionfoundinSplitwith
certaintythatitwasoriginallyinstalledthere.Therecertainly
wereseveralsettlementsonthepeninsulathathadtheirown
necropolises.Oneofthesesmallersettlementswaslocated
onthesouthernsideoftheEpetio-Ad Dianamroadinthe
territoryofPazdigradandŽnjan.InClassicalAntiquity,this
areahadalloftheconditionsfordevelopmentofasettlement:
fertilesoil,sourcesofwaterandabaysuitabletoberthships.
Asalreadymentioned,thesteladiscussedherewasnotthe
onlymonumentthatsawthelightofdayafewyearsago.
Accordingtowitnesses,severalothergravemonuments
werefoundherethatfeaturedportraits.Thefateofthese

kojasuimalavlastitenekropole.Jednoodtakvihmanjihnaselja
nalazilosesjužnestranecesteEpetio-Ad Dianamnapodručju
PazdigradaiŽnjana.Tajjeprostoruanticiimaosvepreduvjete
zarazvitaknaselja:plodnozemljište,izvorepitkevodeizaljev
pogodanzapristajanjebrodova.Kakojevećspomenuto,stela
okojojseovdjeraspravljalo,nijebilajedinispomenikkoji
jeugledaosvjetlodanaprijenekolikogodina.Premaizjavi
svjedoka,natomjemjestunađenojošnekolikonadgrobnih
spomenika,sportretnimprikazima.Tisuspomeniciodneseni
unepoznatompravcu,aovajjeostaostajatinagradilištu
jernavodnonijebiodovoljnozanimljiv(!),uusporedbis
ostalima,kojisuimaliportrete.Očitojedajenatommjestu
bilanekropolakojajenažalostuništenaprijenegojedošlodo
stručneintervencije.Dajedojavadošlanavrijeme,zasigurno
bismodobilibaremdoneklepotpunijuslikuoovomprostoru
injegovimstanovnicima.No,danebismobilimalodušni,i
pronalazaksamojednognatpisaodiznimnogjeznačenjajer
namje,akoništadrugo,daobarempotvrdezaregionalne
značajkeizgovoralatinskogjezikau1.stoljeću.
2. Latinskisejezikmorapromatratikaoibilokojidrugijezik
kojijeuuporabinanekomširempodručju.Jezikježivotkivo
ipodložanjesvakodnevnommijenjanjuinadopunjavanju
novimizrazima.Istomožemorećiizalatinskijezik,zakoji
vjerujemodasuodstupanjaizmeđuknjiževnogjezikaionog
uprovincijibilapoprilična.Nikakosenemožeočekivatidaće
seuprovincijipisati,akamoligovoritijezikomkakavnalazimo
npr.kodCiceronailiOvidija,tovišeštodanasznamodasu
semoderniromanskijezicirazvilitakoštosusepostupno
odvajaliodzajedničkelatinskematice.
ProstorprovincijeDalmacijeiznimnojebogatepigrafskom
ostavštinom.Nanjezinomsupodručjudjelovaleklesarskeradionice
ukojimasumajstoribilipripadnicidomaćegstanovništvaikoji
čestonisuniznalizaboljilatinskiodonogkojisugovorili.Stoga
natpisi,osimčinjenicakojesedajurekonstruiratiizsamogteksta,
nosejošjednuvrstupodataka:podatkeonačinunakojisutadašnji
monumentsisunknown,whilethisoneremainedatthe
constructionsitebecauseitwasnotinterestingenough(!)
comparedtotheothersbearingportraits.Itisapparentthat
therewasanecropolisatthissitewhichwasunfortunately
destroyedpriortoexpertintervention.Haditbeenreported
ontime,therewouldnowcertainlybeamorecomplete
pictureofthisareaanditsresidents.However,puttingaside
anypotentialpettiness,onemustnotethatthediscovery
ofevenoneinscriptionisofgreatimportance,forithas-if
nothingelse-givenusattheveryleastaconfirmationofthe
regionalcharacteristicsofLatinpronunciationinthefirst
century.
2. Latinmustbeexaminedjustlikeanyotherlanguagein
useoverabroadterritory.Languageisalivingthingand
subjecttoeverydaychangesandsupplementationwith
newexpressions.ThesamecanbesaidofLatin,forwhich
webelievethatvariancesbetweentheliterarystandardand
theformusedintheprovinceswereconsiderable.Thereis
nowaytoexpectthatpeoplelivingintheprovinceswould
write,tosaynothingofspeak,inthesamemannerasCicero
orOvid.WethereforeknowtodaythatthemodernRomance
languagesdevelopedbygraduallymovingawayfromthe
commonLatinmatrix.
TheterritoryoftheprovinceofDalmatiahasanexceptionally
richepigraphicheritage.Masonryworkshopswereactivein
itsterritory,inwhichitsmasterscamefromamongthelocal
populationandwhooftendidnotknowLatinanybetterthan
theformthattheyspoke.Thustheinscriptions,besidesthe
factsthatcanbereconstructedfromthetextsthemselves,also
containanothertypeofinformation:dataonthemannerin
whichtheresidentsofthetimepronouncedLatin.Thisprimarily
referstoinscriptionsbyprivatepersons,becausenothingother
thanstandardliteraryLatinwouldhavebeentoleratedinofficial
inscriptions.Itisperhapstruethatsuchfactsaremoreinteresting
tolinguiststhanarchaeologists,butbythesametokenthey
shouldnotbeavoidedsimplybecausetheydeviatefromthe
textbookexamplesofLatinity.Itbecomesevenmoreinteresting
whensuchphenomenaareobservedininscriptionsfromthe
firstcenturyBCandthefirstcenturyAD,becauseatthetimea
largeportionoftheItalicpopulationmigratedtotheeastern
Adriaticcoast.TheseItalicpopulations,whethertheyarrivedas
colonists,merchantsorsoldiers,broughtwiththemthebroaduse
ofLatintotheindigenousinhabitants,whohadtoadapttothis
newlanguage.AfterbecomingfamiliarwiththeLatinlanguage
andRomancustoms,thelocalpopulationadaptedthemtosuit
itself,whetheritinvolvedartandarchitectureorlanguage.Inthis
author’sopinion,itisrealistictoexpectthatduringthisearliest
periodinscriptionswereengravedwhichdidnotdiffermuch
fromthosedoneinRomeandthattheappearanceofVulgarLatin
waslesscommonthaninlaterperiods.ThisiswhyIbelievethat
any“irregularity”containedininscriptionsshouldbetakeninto
considerationasapossiblefeatureoflocalpronunciation.Tobe
sure,thisdoesnotmeanthattheywereobviouslyengravedin

natpiseprivatnihosobajerslužbeninatpisinebitrpjeliodstupanja
odknjiževnoglatinskog.Jestdatakvestvarimoždavišezanimaju
filologenegoliarheologe,aliihseistotakonebitrebaloizbjegavati
samozatoštoodskačuodškolskihprimjeralatinštine.Jošnamje
zanimljivijekadsetakvapojavauočinanatpisimakojipripadaju

doselionaistočnuobaluJadrana.TisuItalici,bilodasudošlikao
kolonisti,trgovciilivojnici,sasobomdonijeliiširokuuporabu
latinskogjezikameđuautohtonipuk,kojisemoraonaviknutina
novijezik.Nakonupoznavanjalatinskogjezikairimskihobičaja,
lokalnostanovništvotetekovineprilagođujesebi,kakoumjetnost
iarhitekturu,takoijezik.Držimokakojerealnoočekivatidaseu
tomnajranijemrazdobljuklešunatpisikojisenerazlikujumnogo
odonihklesanihuRimuidajepojavavulgarnoglatinitetarjeđa
tadanegoliukasnijemrazdoblju.Zatosmatramodabisesvaka
“nepravilnost”nanatpisimamoglarazmatratikaomogućaodlika
lokalnogizgovora.Pritom,dakako,nemislimonariječizakojeje
očitodasupogreškomuklesanenanatpisu.OdizdanjaknjigePetra
Skokaovulgarnomlatinitetunadalmatinskimnatpisimaprošlo
jevišeod90godina,88anakonnjegaovomsepojavomrijetko
tkobavio.Općenitojeopojavivulgarnoglatinitetairomanskim
jezicimaproizišlimiznjegapisaoPavaoTekavčić,kojiusvojojknjizi89
dajevelikbrojprimjerasnatpisaiiztekstovaod1.do9.st.kojima
ilustriratupojavu.Stoga,kadasebudenanovoprikupljalagrađa
izDalmacijezanoviCorpus inscriptionum Latinarum,trebalobisve
natpisekojipokazujuodstupanjaodknjiževnoglatinskogjezika,
zasebnosagledatiimoždaizdatinovustudiju,olatinskomjeziku
kakavsegovoriounarodu.
